The Michael Jackson Tribute on Dancing with the Stars

Wow. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel, but I really, really liked it. Nice mixture of true MJ (Derek, Mark, Lacey) and ballroom. This was a tribute to the man’s music as much as it was his dance. His music was beautifully represented in the dances – kudos to all the choreographers.

Another, clearly misguided, blogger at E! made the crack that the professionals weren’t cool enough or young enough to represent MJ adequately. HELLO???!!! Michael Jackson was a year older than DONNY OSMOND when he died. OLDER. Therefore, it stands to reason that the older pros have just as much a clue about MJ as the younger ones. I hate stupid cracks like that – admit your bias, people. I admit mine – and I don’t care for SYTYCD. There, I said it. Others prefer SYTYCD. They are two completely different shows and shouldn’t be compared – I think I wrote a blog about this a while ago. John, find me a link. 🙂

Speaking of bias – seeing lots of comments on twitter about Derek as the blond MJ. Yes indeed, my favorite pro was front and center for a reason. 🙂 While I generally prefer Derek’s dancing to the other pros, I thought they all were fantastic tonight – great job!!

DWTS9 Week 5 Power Rankings

For the first time this season, I really don’t have much to say about tonight.  Despite having two of the most emotionally-charged dances (and an energetic group dance), my overall feeling for tonight is “blah” – which is why I really had a hard time with this week’s rankings.  Probably the hardest yet, because very few people really “stood out” tonight – and the paso dobles seemed to really get lost in the shuffle amongst a sea of Argentine tangos.  Oh well…on with it…

1.) Joanna & Maks – Yes, they did flub…but it will probably make this tango that much more memorable and will also get a lot of sympathy votes (as if Heidi didn’t drum up enough for sick Derek via Twitter! 😉 ).  And they had the virtue of being in the “money spot” (which I don’t think was accidental…) Joanna was actually quite good in the tango – she had the heat, and was the only one that seemed to get the characteristic “brush” of the feet against the floor.  This was probably my fave routine of hers yet – it just would have been a heck of a lot better with Derek in it! Although, oddly enough, Maks & Joanna seemed to get along pretty well…maybe the eastern European connection? 😛 But no worries, Heidi…there is only one man for Joanna, and it starts with a “D” and ends in “Erek Hough”…

2.) Donny & Kym – (WARNING TO DONNY FANS: Hatchet job in process…don’t bother reading on if you get offended easily!) Now, I did say last week that it was pointless to talk about Donny’s dancing because he’s gonna get a ton of votes (and a lot of smoke blown up his tookus from the judges) week after week.  But I feel it’s my duty to point out that he was RIDICULOUSLY overscored this week.  His tango was, at best, stiff and cold.  I got NO HEAT from him – and honestly, who really wants to see a smoldering Osmond? I think I threw up in my mouth a little when he made the comment about “knowing about passion” because he had 5 kids.  And again with the hackneyed fauxmance with Bruno…ick, ick, ick.  But the crowd still cheers the loudest for him, and everyone (with the exception of maybe me, Heidi, & John) thinks he’s just dandy.  *sigh* Have fun on your trip to the finals, Donny boy…

3.) Mya & Dmitry – Still stone cold.  Great choreography (Dmitry really seems to shine in Argentine tango), near-flawless execution from Mya – and not a smidge of heat between them.  I had high hopes for Mya after the steam she brought to the lambada last week, but alas, it was all in vain.  *sigh* But their scores (and Mya’s fanbase) will likely carry them through again…

4.) Kelly & Louis – I give Kelly mad props for seemingly bringing Louis out of his shell – the guy has been wearing more makeup than some of the girls this season! It definitely makes them memorable, as does their song choice (honoring dear old daddy 🙂 ) and rocking theme.  And I am aware she was dancing with an injury…but let’s be honest – her paso was highly mediocre.  Kelly seems to be receding further into her shell with each performance, and it looked like she was more or less just walking through her choreo tonight…she may be the “loveable underdog” this season, but she is beginning to run the risk of becoming boring.  And boring does not keep you safe week after week…

5.) Louie & Chelsie – I’m gonna put it out there: Louie & Chelsie read my rankings last week and are heeding my advice and playing up the showmance 😉 These two look more smitten each time I see them – putting their heads together (a big body language indicator of attraction and trust, as it is a very vulnerable position), smiling broadly during practice, always facing their bodies toward one another.  But I actually agreed with Len and thought this was their best routine yet tonight – it had a story to it (which most of the other tangos didn’t), they were connected physically and emotionally, and the execution was clean.  I gotta hand it to Louie – he is always there for Chelsie physically during all of the stunts.  He’s a strong lil guy! And those two are still cute as a button…onto next week…

6.) Mark & Lacey – These two are still getting lost in the shuffle for me, despite the fact that they seem to be improving.  Their paso actually left me a little confused this week – Mark had some moments of great strength and character during the routine, and he also had some moments where I actually found him to be a little bit…effeminate.  Not sure if it was the way he was sticking out his hips or the expression on his face, but at certain points he really looked absolutely ridiculous to me.  Surprisingly enough, I actually preferred their two-step last week over this one. But if the judges say they’re improving, the voters will likely follow, and they’ll live to dance another week.  I’m just not sure they’re improving at enough of a clip to stick around much longer…

7.) Michael & Anna – I don’t think it was any accident that Michael got paso this week…after the disaster that was the bolero last week, I think the producers took pity on poor Anna and gave them a dance without a hint of romance.  But the paso suited him well, and he was actually quite entertaining to watch – not too painful on the eyes.  But I find that paso can be a dance that is easy to “fake” your way through, and really, that’s all he was doing.  And Michael the ham came out strong with a bit about “holding a quarter with your butt” and then took a cue from Donny and pandered to Bruno…probably a wise move on his part.  There’s a slight chance these two could end up in the bottom two, but after they were snatched from the jaws of death last week by Michael’s fans, I sincerely doubt they’re leaving this week.

8.) Melissa & Mark – Sorry Melissa, looks like you really are a one-week wonder.  And yes, I know your partner was sick one day (and you got to work with the fabulous Anna T., whom I adore 🙂 ) – but your tango still sucked.  The energy was low, and Mark did most of the fancy footwork (which is really supposed to be the woman’s job in this dance). Aside from that, I remember nothing about it.  And I don’t know how much longer you can coast through on Mark’s popularity…

9.) Aaron & Karina – Oh Aaron, what are we going to do with you? (and ironically enough, this was actually a lyric in one of his early songs back in the day! lol) I daresay you’ve got a lot of reputation repair to do to recover from your emotional outbursts the past two weeks.  And it doesn’t help that you seemed to be on the verge of happy tears upon getting your scores this week…although your tango was actually pretty darn good.  Like Louie, Aaron is strong, and good at tricks – he never seems to falter when he’s hoisting his partner around, and for the first time I actually felt a little bit of heat between he & Karina when their faces were close together.  But when they were apart? Totally blank.  Not a whole lot of showmanship here. And they performed early in the show, which never seems to help.  On a (slightly) unrelated note – does anyone else detect a rivalry between Aaron & Louie? Louie definitely took a cheap shot at Aaron during his confessional last week, and their “Who can do the best flip?” contest during the hustle practice seemed to have a slightly aggressive undercurrent…

10.) Natalie & Alec – Robotic, emotionless, low energy, and BLAH.  I really have nothing more to say about it.  I don’t know how it’s possible, but Natalie seems to  have actually gotten WORSE with each passing week, in both stage presence & technique. It  certainly didn’t help that she got stuck in the “crap spot” by dancing first…and she definitely doesn’t have the scores to keep her safe this week.  I also noticed her starting to develop the “Wish I had more to say…

So ummm yah…I really don’t have a lot more to say.  I think it’ll come down to Aaron & Karina (or maybe Melissa & Mark) and Natalie & Alec in the bottom 2, with Natalie probably going home. We’ll suffer through the group hustle once again as the encore, and we’ll probably be underwhelmed by the MJ tribute.  *sigh* But hopefully you guys will have some strong opinions about tonights show…and I wanna hear ’em!

Also, feel free to take a look back at all the previous Dancing with the Stars power rankings to see how they’ve changed as the show progressed.

DWTS 9 – The Last of the Week 4 Media

At least it is if I have anything to say about it. 🙂 First is E! News which had a very short piece on Aaron, Maks and Karina – mainly the backstage cat fighting which I’m finding more entertaining than the actual dancing. Or at least up to this week it was more entertaining. The show seems to be improving like I hoped it would once we got down to a smaller number of dancers. Anyway, Maks took a shot of his own – it was very subtle, which was why I loved it. He tweeted that the energy on the show ought to be good this week (since he’s possibly dancing with Joanna and will therefore be back on set). 🙂 You go, dude. 😉

Access Hollywood has a long bit on DWTS – the first part is a rehash of LaToya fawning over Derek’s abs, but the second and third parts are new. Wait for the second part – they say something very interesting and claim that Paula Abdul said it. Very interesting in light of recent discussions around here. The third part is a day in the dancing life of Kelly Osbourne – which just made me love her even more. 🙂

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 – Who DIDN’T Join the Show

Well, I see it could have been someone other than Tom Delay.  Someone who might have brought more entertainment value to the program. 🙂 Maybe.  If one is old enough to remember when he was Vice President.  😉 From the DePauw University Website:

Decision to Decline TV Show a Family Matter for Dan (’69) and Corinne (’43) Quayle

October 18, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — In today’s Indianapolis Star, Dan Quayle — the 44th Vice President of the United States and 1969 graduate of DePauw University — reveals why he turned down a request to appear as a contestant on TV’s Dancing With the Stars: his mother. Corinne Pulliam Quayle, a 1943 DePauw graduate, “was instrumental in his decision not to appear on the show,” notes the “Behind Closed Doors” column.

Dan Quayle tells the newspaper, “My mother actually called me up and told me that I’m not a good dancer. Yes, I’m serious. So you listen to your mother,” he said with a laugh. “I said, ‘Well, Mother, I’m actually a pretty good dancer. What are you talking about?’ She said, ‘No, you were never a good dancer. Don’t do it.’ So how’s that for an endorsement?”

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 – Miscellaneous Media from Week 4

Several of the entertainment shows had DWTS stories that I’ve not previously posted – I’m sure I’ll have more tomorrow too. It never ends. 🙂 Latest on Derek for those not following on Twitter – Joanna says that Derek wants to dance on Monday, but it’s still very much up in the air, because he’s still sick. I personally think he should take the day off and rest, but he is 24 and male, so what are the odds he’ll listen to me? 😉

E! News from Wednesday, October 14, 2009. There is a second E! News Video at Pure Derek Hough.

Entertainment Tonight pimping Donny Osmond (again), and he talks about his broken toe. Also Mya and Dmitry.

Extra from October 15, 2009 – Randall Christensen, Chuck Liddell, Joanna Krupa, Derek Hough and Michael Irvin:

Extra from 10-13-09 – Donny Osmond again, plus others.

Dancing with the Stars Season 9 – Week 4 News and Other Media

My favorite pro is very sick. 🙁 He tweeted this morning that his whole body hurt and he had chills and sweats and that he could barely stand up. Joanna is rehearsing tonight with Maks, which would be my pro of choice if Derek had to sit out for a few days. Anyway, according to Joanna and her manager, Derek has a 104 degree fever and has been to the doctor. Hopefully he was given Tamiflu and he’ll be back shortly. Hopefully VERY shortly. Much as I like Maks, Derek’s my boy. For anyone who might have forgotten that fact. 🙂

Derek and Joanna’s Lambada is one of TV’s Top 5 on AOL. Cool.

In the past I have been known to double post media here and at PureDerekHough – tonight I am very, very lazy and I’m just giving you several PDH links to LOTS of video which has Derek/Joanna content, but also has Donny, Melissa, Kelly and others.

This post has several print articles – I’ve quote the portions relevant to Derek, but links are included so you can read the whole articles, which are DWTS related.

From MercuryNews.com:

Chuck Liddell lays into ‘Dancing With the Stars’ judges: ‘Screw those guys’

Former Ultimate Fighting champ Chuck Liddell isn’t pleased with the professional judges who helped give him the boot from “Dancing With the Stars”.

“Screw those guys,” he said. “They don’t know what they’re talking about half the time, anyway.”

While Liddell was ousted from the popular prime time show he simultaneously heard good news about his next gig — a role in an upcoming Mickey Rourke film.

“It’s a bigger movie,” Liddell said, adding that it was too early to reveal many details, but noting that the film had a strong cast.

Amid a flood of text messages from friends and family, Liddell spoke Wednesday about his experiences by telephone from Los Angeles, where he had been learning to dance since August. He survived into the fourth week of the show. But after he performed a two-step dance with partner Anna Trebunskaya on Monday night, the judges gave Liddell a low score of 17 out of 30 points. He was eliminated on Tuesday’s show.

Oh Louis. I can see your point, but this isn’t a new issue. ABC Local LAhas a bunch of vids, click the link. I’ve put Kelly’s below cause I lurve her. 🙂

I think that’s all for now. I’ll have more tomorrow. 🙂

Shakira Performs on Dancing with the Stars – UFC Goes Down Fighting

Tonight’s episode had a little bit of a shock too it, but we’re still a couple episodes from the real shocking eliminations. However, what I think is impressive is that Dancing with the Stars was able to get a big name like Shakira on the show. Granted 14 million viewers and probably a chunk of cash will convince a lot of performers to come on the show.

Since I’m always listing the music from the show, Shakira performed “Did It Again” and “Hips Don’t Lie” Shakira - Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 - Hips Don't Lie (feat. Wyclef Jean) with the Shakira dancers. I think I prefer when they use the pro ballroom dancers myself.

I have to admit that I thought Chuck’s teddy bear quality and also the UFC fan base would have carried him through a little farther. I guess UFC doesn’t really get into ballroom dancing. Although, it’s not revealing anything when I say that the NFL (Michael Irvin) has a bit larger audience than the UFC.

Week 4 Edition: THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE INCREDIBLY HOT!

After catching up on last nights dwts, I am left baffled.  I can’t pinpoint what is disappointing me at the moment but it was a weird night, I feel like.  I didn’t enjoy the country two-step.  I thought the couples that did the dance, danced it to the best of their abilities and had fun with it but I don’t think the dance fits with DWTS at all.  My favorite was Chelsie and Louie…who doesn’t love those two 🙂

I kind of like the Charleston.  I get that it is a 20s dance and everyone that danced it really got into character.  I think Mark’s choreography was brilliant and it fit Melissa to a tee!  I LOVED kim’s outfit!  There’s nothing better than a red flapper dress with a matching head piece!

I liked the Bolero….nothing really stood out to me except that it was really, really slow.   My favorite was Alec and Natalie!  I really enjoy watching Natalie.  I don’t know what it is about her but she’s amazing and she looks amazing when she dances…..minus her arms!  But I’m sure Alec will fix them in the weeks to come!

I kind of liked the lambada.  It was sexy and fun and Derek was shirtless so what else could you ask for!  I didn’t like Joanna’s dress though…the fringe was too long and I would have liked to see the color more vibrant!

Overall, though, none of the styles really WOWED me…but I am excited to get back to the paso doble next week 🙂  So here we go for this weeks….

THE GOOD
I debated between Natalie and Mya for this spot because they both danced beautifully and nailed their choreography!  However, I am going to go with Natalie because part of the reason that I love her is that dancing doesn’t come natural to her.  I love seeing her progression from week to week and I thought this week her footwork was outstanding!  Her arms kill me every week but with Bruno pointing it out the way he did I’m sure it’ll get fixed 🙂

THE BAD
I don’t have that many things to say about Michael and Anna except that there just isn’t any chemistry between the two of them.  I know this is Anna’s first season on the show but I agree with the judges that she is not putting enough dancing into the routines.  Maybe it’s because Michael can only do so much…that wouldn’t surprise.  But I think she can put a few more elements in there!

THE INCREDIBLY HOT
Joanna and Derek…hands down!  Who did not love that dance!  I loved that he was shirtless 🙂  Most of all, you could tell that they were having such a great time!  Derek always has the most amazing choreography and Joanna picks up on it quickly.  She performs very well and I can’t wait to see what they bring for the weeks to come!
