DWTS Judges
How do you feel about the judges on Dancing with the Stars? In a recent blog post by Maks(sorry no link since I’m posting from my Blackberry) he talked about the judges being inconsistent and he even compared some of their judging to “Crazy Mary” from SYTYCD. I really dislike Mary as a judge on SYTYCD so this is a pretty strong statement by Maks.
What are your thoughts on the DWTS judges? Are they fair? Are they consistent? Are they annoying you?
I guess I personally see them more as entertainment and less as judges. Plus, I can’t get all worked up over the judges since in the end they basically get relegated to nothing and the voting determines the winner since the judges scores are all so close. What do you think?

I think Maks complains a lot, especially for someone who is making a good amount of money being a part of a show that he constantly derides. I continue to be more and more irritated by him.
JanessaC,
I don’t think it was Maks really complaining. Well, ok it was complaining, but I think his intent was to make the show better. I don’t think he was saying it as a knock on the show. I think he does appreciate the show and what it’s done for him, but he wants the show to be better. I think he also wants it to stick to the core ballroom roots. In fact, I think he feels that a lot more than other people.
I complain about two of the judges (Carrie Anne and Burno) the most. I think what they should do is keep Len and get two more people who know Ballroom. Maybe retired professionals hat haven’t been on the show or something. Carrie Anne and Bruno know jack about Ballroom and really shouldn’t be judges.
As for consistency, I think this season they have been a little bit in that they over-score somebody (Donny, Joanna, and Michael) and then underscore others (Mya and Aaron mainly). But then again that happens every season…
And I agree with John. I wish that the show would go back more towards a Ballroom feel.
I like bruno Im always entertained by him. Carrie Ann bugs me with the lift thing. Its not that they need new judges but maybe some better rules for the pros to follow.
I totally agree with Katrina. I think Carrie Ann and Bruno don’t know what they’re doing and are too personal with the contestants. Carrie Ann kisses them and makes personal comments, for example how Aaron “put her off.” She picks on the lifts because she knows she has nothing else to critique. Bruno is more interested in his showmanship than in the contestants. I was aggravated that when Len stood up, to congratulate a group, at his turn Bruno stood on the table. He always has to out-do everyone. I think Len should stay and they should find two other people who know more about ballroom dancing, unlike this commenter.
I heard that Corky Ballas was asked to audition to be a judge in the early days of the series, but they wouldn’t pay for his plane flight from London to audition so he declined. I think he would be interesting on the show since he is younger than Len but undoubtedly knows a lot about ballroom and as we’ve seen with Cloris is quite entertaining. It might be too awkward since his son and Derek are competing and he’s coached most of the other dancers like Maks and Tony. Hmmm. What do you guys think?
I don’t have an issue with the lift thing so much in regular ballroom dances because they’re not allowed. That’s fine but sometimes what someone calls a lift isn’t a lift to someone else. It’s complicated.
Rooster, that’s right and In the ballroom world it’s going to be hard to have someone younger than Len who doesn’t have some sort of a connection to any pro on the show. I just wish we could get some people who know something about Ballroom
The judges each bring something different to the table. Len does know his ballroom. Bruno is all entertainment, which lets be honest, Len alone would be a bit too dry. Carrie Ann does get on my nerves when she pulls the lift card. Sadly, this season I just have not enjoyed the dancers as much. There is no one that I absolutely want to win as in seasons past. This time around I could take or leave them all. Well, with one exception being Joanna Krupa; I don’t like her personality much. She seems SO full of herself. I do like Maya’s dancing better, and Len has been hard on her this season. I also have a little soft spot for Kelly, but don’t think she has the chops to be in first place.
Anyway, I’m still annoyed that Gilles did not win last season. I seriously think he was robbed!
i actually love the three judges, espacially bruno he’s fun and a bit fair is his comments. although i think that he and carrie were overscoring mya since the beggning of the show! gd dancer yeah but it stopes here: no fun no personality, boring!! i really like len coz he’s there to keep things going accroding to the dance rules. carrie ann i don’t like her with her lift thing but still fun to watch! Overall gd three judges i don’t think they should be changed, ! But u can’t help it like we all have favorite so they do ,they just should be fair and really play their role as JUDGES not only viewers
Well, Len has said on more than one occassion that he’s known Derek, Mark and Julianne since they were small children. That said, no way would I want Corky to be a judge – he’s shown no ability to not be a stage dad.
I think you’re actually not giving the judges enough credit – I think they have a story they want told from the beginning of the show and they have people they want there at the end (or people they don’t want there at the end) so they base their judging and comments on that. I firmly believe that Kelly is being over scored (as much as I love her) because she’s an entertaining personality, and that Joanna didn’t get the 30 she deserved for that Paso because they wanted to be sure that Mya doesn’t go home through a freak accident. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Everyone on the show gets the shaft at one time or another from the judges because of the story the producers are trying to tell. Yes, I am a cynic.
If you’re scoring based on the whole package – entertainment, dancing, etc – then in no way do I think Mya has been underscored. She’s the only one I would argue that has been correctly scored.
