DWTS Season 10 – Pro Dancer Gossip
Take this for what it’s worth – it’s E! and like anyone they are not always 100% accurate. But because of all the dissing of the male pros for a variety of reasons (ego, being one), I found this very interesting:
We interrupt the countdown to tonight’s Dancing With the Stars unveiling to bring you this: Kym Johnson, who won last year’s contest with Donny Osmond, will not be returning to the show for season 10, E! News has exclusively learned.
“She and her agent went after more money in her contract,” says a source close to the show. Producers were “not happy they played the money game, so they left her off and didn’t renew her contract.”
Personally, I think they all deserve more money and certainly don’t think any less of Kym for asking for it, if this article is true.

haha, well you know I do diss derek for the ego thing even though i admitted he is by FAR the best dancer on the show. DWTS needs to pay these pros waaaaay more money. if it is true they only receive a couple of thousand per week while in the competition, then that is a shame! Frankly they should pay the stars more too! Sorry but 200 or 300 thousand is not enough to attrack good stars. The show makes sooooo much money. It needs to start rewarding those who are working so hard.
Yeah… not terribly surprised if that was/is the case.
The pros are every bit the draw (and in many cases more so than their partner) that many of the stars are. They should be paid accordingly. Every season should include:
Kym
Cheryl
Edyta
Karina
Chelsie
Lacie
Maks
Derek
Mark
Louis
Tony
Jonathan
I would include Julianne, but she’s made her own career choices. I personally think she made a mistake.
Good for her but now that she pulled the plug last minute (if it is true) I wonder if Anna D. or Lacey will step in or they cut a star out and compensate him for relieving his schedule.
I’m thinking that she and her agent asked for a raise well before casting happened… or rather at least not while pairings were happening…
Maybe why she’s kept mum for so long?
I’m not sure that Kym really wanted to come back for DWTS 10.
I heard she is burned out after Burn The Floor and is homesick for Oz.
Maybe she decided to only return to the show this season if it was worth it financially … hence she asked for more money (which is only fair on her behalf as defending champ).
Whatever the reasons it is a total shame she is not going to be on. Hope she returns for DWTS 11.
I shall be switching my pro allegiance to Tony D.
Colin
That makes sense. Kym misses home and is tired after doing so many seasons with the tour when they had them and then did burn the floor. Maybe she knew they would say no but went for it anyway.
Mark is the luckiest pro. He had Kim but one season does not equal four seasons of incredible good luck.
Just a comment to say that Kym’s rep says that E!’s story is untrue.
Sorry Nick – if true it wasn’t last minute and based on the women we already had I figured she was out. I think they planned around Kym all along. For whatever reason.
It’s always possible that asking for more money IS a way to get out of the season all together. That crossed my mind as well. Ask for something you know you won’t get and they let your out of your contract.
I’m sure he/she does say it’s untrue.
Great site Heidi!
Thanks.
There’s a few of us at work here, mainly me, Courtney and John.
I don’t think that it is a money issue. Aren’t they all signed to long term contracts? When Derek was asked about Julianna returning to DWTS he said that he thinks she’ll return/HAS to return.
Therefore, if Kym isn’t on this season I’d bet it is because she asked for the season off. She can defend her title upon her return next season. Since she just won– I don’t think it’ll hurt her popularity. And sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder.
I’ll miss her this season–hoping for some pro dance appearances this season. She could go back to OZ for a month and not miss much of the season– since she doesn’t have to deal with training a celeb.
I like your siggestion, Cori. If she does return for at least one pro dance appearance, it will show no bad feelings. Kym may have had the title as her goal. She achieved it, and now some time off.
Yes, they all deserve more money!
Oops, I meant suggestion. I do like Kym even though I wanted Mya and Dmitry to win.
Hmm… maybe thats why Ashly’s abruptly returned 7 seasons later but hey it’s just one opinion.
I don’t know what the situation is about contracts… but early in Season two/three Jesse DeSoto and Jackie Josephs were both signed to two year agreements to be available should the producers decide to use them for the seasons signed… In the end Jesse did one season and the producers never used them again (either b/c their contract was up by that time or they just let the pros go)… Either way IF Kym’s on an agreement/contract of being used til a certain time period, the producers could also have let her go if they decided not to use her in the end?
