DWTS Season 11 – Jennifer Grey
Wow. I didn’t know any of this. From Zap2It (thanks to dwtsclaire for sending it to me):
Iconic as Patrick Swayze’s swaying partner Baby (who “nobody puts in a corner”) in the classic 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing,” the actress will compete in the 11th season of the ABC contest starting Monday, Sept. 20. If it seems a no-brainer that she’d be invited onto the show, she says she was asked many times, but only last year did she really begin to consider it.
And she might not be here now if she hadn’t.
“Last year, my neck was killing me,” she tells Zap2it, “so I said to them, ‘Let me have it checked out and see if I even could do this.’ I went to this neurological spine surgeon who I heard was the best. I knew he had operated on Karina [Smirnoff, one of the 'Dancing' pros], and I figured I would tell him I wanted to do ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and ask him what I needed to get through it.”
The reply was more than Grey had bargained for: “I’d had a really bad car accident years ago, and basically, the ligaments in the back of my neck were ripped and I’d never addressed that. It degenerated, and the surgeon said, ‘Right now, your spinal cord is compressed. If you fell or got rear-ended, you’d be paralyzed.’”
And there was more, as Grey underwent the process of having her neck fused. She recalls, “He also said to me, ‘What’s that lump in your neck?’ I said, ‘Oh, it’s just a benign nodule that I’ve been watching for four years.’ I didn’t want to have surgery for it, but he said, ‘That has to go.’ They took out half of it, and it turned out to be cancerous. Then they took the second half out on Christmas Eve.”

Yikes. They really don’t want Derek to win this season.
It’s an incredible story. When I first heard that she may be on the show I just thought, how special this must be for her and it just had a touching element to it because when you talk about her, you can’t help but think about Patrick Swayze.
I really wish her the best and I hope that the journey she takes on DWTS is an amazing one. If she is paired with Derek, I know it will be. So much about him to me is reminiscent of Patrick Swayze which is why I feel their’s would be a great/special pairing.
Looking forward to a great season!
Thanks for posting thisi Heidi and for all the work you do!
Wow! What an incredible story. It sounds like she will have some limitations and it is not completely because of her age. However, with Derek as her partner it will be a great journey and he always brings out the best in his partner. Will they win? Odds may not be in their favor but I do think she will be a favorite.
Thanks for posting this Heidi!
Oh there’s a definite limitation issue here. And that’s too bad, we might get more Jane Seymour than Baby. Dererk’s choreo will be tested, and that’s fine, but it’s the celebrity who has to show they aren’t stiff and has flow.
I look forward to seeing them dance together – but I don’t think it’s that they didn’t want Derek to win (and frankly if he had gotten either Brandy or Audrina he very well could have), but that Jennifer asked for him. I would put money on it, actually. And that’s cool with me – I’ll be curious to see what he can do with her. In all honesty, I think he had a much larger challenge with Joanna, he was just brilliant at hiding her considerable flaws.
Have the pairings been announced? I’m a bit confused.
No the pairings haven’t been announced, but Mark was with Bristol on GMA, from what I understand. Boo – would have loved to see her with Louis.
Hmm…well maybe Heidi, but Jennifer Grey is a classic Tony Davolani partner, especially now considering her health issues. It seems TPTB have switched the traditional partnerships because they’re not interested in pursuing a 3rd win for Derek at this time.
I heard Bristol was on GMA this morning and that Mark was with her. I was hoping Louis would have been paired with her. Oh well guess we can’t win all.
Andie- I have to agree that one would think Jennifer would be a classic Tony partner while Audrina would be a classic partner for Derek. I don’t think it has anything to do in the show not wanting Derek to win a 3rd time. It could be very well that Jennifer requested him or the producers thought they would be a better match and give him a new challenge to work with. I actually like the idea of Jennifer with Derek. I am curious what he will be able to do with her. I’ve seen twitter and see that Tony seems to be very happy about his partner. Can’t say I blame him after having Kate last season. I think Audrina will be good, but wondering how much voter support she will have and how much MTV viewers cross over to DWTS.
Do you really honestly believe the PTB care if Derek wins again? I sure don’t!! I don’t think that plays into the matchups at all. If they didn’t want Derek to win, they would just sit him down for a season. I do think they probably want him to stick around a few weeks but worry about whether he wins or not? Nah. From what I’ve read this morning (when I’ve had time) if they didn’t want him to win they would give him Audrina, who one source labeled Kim Kardashian part 2.
Jennifer tweeted earlier that Derek “rocks!!!!!!” so I’m pretty sure that means they’re together. Or they’re not but she’s just a really really big fan.
Normally I would say, NO TPTB don’t give a hoot any season on who wins.
But, Derek made some statements last season, like that he thinks that getting people with dance experience is good for the show and the show should continue in that vein.. (and I agree) but I think TPTB went out specifically to find non-dancers this season to reverse the trend of talented dancers…so that fossils like the Hoff will sign on the dotted line.
So they give Derek the one known dancer, but well past her dancing prime, and now with serious limitations due to health. Call it crazy, but to me, people who were interested and had dance abilty and significant fan bases got left out because of what happened last season.
ck410 – I saw that. I’m thinking she couldn’t take it any longer or she just forgot she wasn’t supposed to say. She is definitely with Derek though – there are pictures of her with Derek (and he’s wearing the nicest pair of jeans – don’t know how he dances in them), and he’s wearing his shiny latin shoes in some of them.
Andie, you make several very good points. I agree this season’s cast is in response to the backlash of experienced dancers vs. total novices. That outcry has been going on for some time, but came to a crescendo last season w/Nicole. I also think they’ve got to have some decent dancers each season – who can sit through a whole season of nothing but Kate’s and Master P’s and Macy Gray’s and Kathy Ireland’s etc (hope I haven’t offended anyone
– and the only way to guarantee that is with the “ringer” (who appears to be very absent this go-around, unless Kyle ??? don’t know anything about him). One thing I’ve learned over the seasons is that you can’t always tell until you see them actually dance – I’ve been so wrong so many times! Someone with some previous dance experience is really the only way to ensure that. And you’re so right – casting too many experienced dancers is going to turn off a good many potential contestants, young and old, who will feel like there’s no way in hell they can come close to competing with the likes of Nicole, for example. So why even sign up? On a side note – I hope they save the first elimation for the second week – I hate it when we have to say goodbye to someone after only 1 dance, a dance you know was all nerves and adrenaline, just wanting to get through it without falling on your assets. I like it much better when the teams have two shots to show us what they’ve got before we kick one to the curb!
What’s TPTB mean?
Sally: The Powers That Be
I’m having trouble with the dashboard – Court, Marianya?? You guys?
Andie – it doesn’t make *sense*. They just had their highest rated season in YEARS if not ever, so why on earth would they care if they got one ringer (actually, they had 3 last season) in the bunch?? This is all about ratings, after all – and this cast does not inspire confidence that they’ll hold on to those ratings. As for what Derek said – did he say it was good for the “show” or good for the “pros” in that they get to be more creative. I’m pretty sure it was the latter and not the former – or both. He’s right – I don’t think he’s ever done better work than he did last season. You don’t think that people like the Hoff would sign on even if there was another Nicole? I think they would – this is about reviving a career, not about winning a mirror ball trophy, for most of them.
Linde, I think you make the same mistake that a lot of online fans do – that the squeaky wheels on the net whining about Nicole (who certainly Wouldn’t have whined about Nicole if she were with their favorite) represent a majority of the audience. They don’t – not even close, is my guess.
The stars sign up for one very simple reason, and it ain’t a trophy. It’s to be on TV. Period. THEY (unlike many fans) know this isn’t really about dancing.
@Heidi, I understand what you’re saying, but look what we have this season. We have a season of essentially non-dancers. I’m not saying what TPTB is doing is particularly good casting. It’s good perhaps for the first two weeks of curiosity, and then when the ratings dip into the weekly slump will there be enough interested dance fans to keep
it going till the finale?
You know when there’s so called ringers on the show, dance fans remain interested and engaged.
I do think essentially there was talk from within about the “type” of dancers coming on this show. Florence Henderson has been wanting this gig since season 4. Perhaps this is the season where she can actually get further than half way. This is what I mean.
