Dancing with the Stars Season 11 – Internet Chatter and Rumors

Well, it has gotten to the point (as usual at this point before the seasons starts) that I don’t know what’s an actual rumor and what is just internet chatter. I do know that I’m hearing/reading a bunch of stuff that has the potential to be highly annoying. :-) We’ve even got trolls trying to manufacture rumors to get me to post them! I’m actually flattered, but also smarter than your average troll. ;-) All of this was my long winded way of qualifying this post with a – “there are too many rumors and too much speculation to figure out which is which”. I’m going to write out what I’ve read and we’ll just see what happens in a week.

A certain Perez Hilton claims that Audrina Patridge and Brandy are going to be on this season. Problem with this is that Perez prints even the most sketchy of sources as rumors with no editorial opinion of what he thinks of these sources – which is what I try to do. So, I’m going to file this one under “even a stopped clock is right twice a day” and say that I think he might be right this time. Mainly because we discussed both Audrina and Brandy as possibles for previous seasons. Brandy as a rumor a year ago and Audrina as a done deal until MTV put a stop to her participation – this was discussed in the comments of a previous post. “The Hills” is done now, right? That could explain it.

Another one that cracks me up and scares me all at the same time is Mike “the Situation” Sorrentino.  Good lord. OK! Magazine is reporting (EXCLUSIVE! my ass :-) ) that he is IN.

You might not think the tango, mamba or waltz would require rock-hard abs, but Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is setting out to show that his GTL skills can translate to the dance floor! OK! has exclusively learned that the Jersey Shore cast member who named his own muscles has signed on to the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars.

They even managed to get a quote from Derek at the Creative Arts Emmys, and his quote cracks me up. Couldn’t agree more, big D. :-)

OK! spoke to DWTS‘ reigning pro champ, Derek Hough, who says the presence of the Jersey Shore guido will get fans glued to their screens.

“It’s People like that who come on the show who people will tune in and watch because either it will be a travesty or it will be interesting to see somebody turn something completely around so I’m up for anybody,” he told OK! at the Creative Emmys Saturday in L.A. “For me it’s classic entertainment, it’s fun. Whatever gets people talking and tuning in is interesting to watch.”

As a reminder of why I always have to wonder about these “exclusives”, besides the fact that he’s been all over twitter as a rumor for a month or more now, is that we reported on Mike back in July. This is Kate Gosselin all over again. Casual mention on a talk show and “ta da!!” they’re on the show. OK! also says that Audrina and Brandy are signed up (and Kurt Warner), but they likely just cribbed that from Perez.  My faith in “journalism” is non-existent.

The above are, IMO, actual solid rumors. We now venture into the area of what is likely fanciful dreams (or nightmare, depending on your perspective) and wishes. :-) Have you ever played the telephone game? That’s what a lot of this is probably about. Someone says “hey, wouldn’t it be cool…” and before you know it some “source” is reporting it as fact.

Lindsay Lohan – I don’t know what it’s about, but I’ve heard lots of talk on twitter about her getting a rehab reprieve and doing DWTS. I think this is straight up bull, but I would not be surprised to be wrong. Does anyone know why this chatter is happening? Or is only because of a story on E! News about her possibly getting out of rehab early? Personally, I think it would probably be good for her.

The nightmare category – Oksana Grigorieva and Rachel Uchitel. I’m pretty sure this is all just chatter and crap, but I gotta say: since when does sleeping with a famous man make one famous? Just gross. This better not be true. I don’t want to have to utter the words: “You’re dead to me, Dancing with the Stars.” :-)

So, have I left anything out?

DWTS Season 11 – PRO WATCH

:-) Today’s the day when they start finding out. Today’s the day I haunt Twitter more than ever – usually. Today I was outside most of the day and am sunburned. :-) But here’s what I found when scanning twitter. I’ll post more info as it becomes available.

First up, Miss Chelsie Hightower. Now, I’m thinking Chelsie is almost a lock for this season. For one thing, she was on Extreme Makeover Home Edition with Derek and I think everyone who did that show has a better than even chance of being back. Secondly, Chelsie tweeted earlier, in response to Ashly Costa, that she didn’t know yet – this was like 17 hours ago. Then, a few hours ago she tweeted “Leaving SLC – won’t be back until November”. Now, when I tried to find this tweet I couldn’t because I think she deleted it. I did find where a fan retweeted it saying how glad she was that Chelsie was back on the show. Well, either Chelsie realized she was giving a wrong impression, or she spilled some beans she wasn’t supposed to – you pick. You could tell the fan that’s not what you meant – or you could delete the tweet and hope no one else (Like me :-) ) saw it.

Next – Dmitry Chaplin. Dmitry tweeted this earlier and he hasn’t taken it down. He doesn’t strike me as the arrogant type who would assume he’s back (especially since he wasn’t last season), so I take this as a confirmation. Ya know Dmitry is not my favorite – I find him too quiet and kinda boring. But after the behavior of a couple pros who shall remain nameless (for now), I’m definitely glad if he’s back. :-)

The only other clues I have right now are the Extreme Home Makeover pros – Derek, who stayed nearly all week, Anna T, Chelsie, Tony and Mark. I have to think that they will be back, since they are on that show, but I could be way off base of course. Plus, Derek was at the studio for no known reason a week ago. Hmmm…you be the judge.

NOTE 1 – People, just because MSN says Julianne is back this season, doesn’t mean she really is. She’s NOT – she’s filming Footloose in Atlanta and she’s said straight up that she’s not back. Do we need to have the conversation about not believing something just because you see it in print from a supposedly reliable source??

NOTE 2: A little bird (who’s first initial is C) tells me that Jackie Josephs has moved to LA. :-) Just sayin’. Is this her Twitter? If it is, she’s following and talking to some interesting people. ;-)

DWTS Pros in the Off-Season – Karina Smirnoff on Celebrity Ghost Stories

Pro Watch 2K10 is upon us, folks! Today is the day that the pros are supposed to start finding out whether or not they’re going to be on this season…which means that Heidi will be busy monitoring Twitter for news of who’s in and who’s out, and posting updates as she finds them.  Show her some love, people – this is no easy task.  It was absolutely crazy last season!

But before the madness commences, here’s a quick little ditty about what one of the pros has been up to during the DWTS hiatus. Apparently Karina Smirnoff has had more than one brush with the paranormal, and she’s sharing her experiences in two episodes of the Biography Channel series Celebrity Ghost Stories. Her first story was featured on the August 7 episode, and tells of her encounter with the apparition of her dead grandmother back in Ukraine when she was only a teenager.  I can’t embed it, but you can go watch the clip here. You can also catch reruns of it on the Bio channel – they’ve been repeating it quite a bit. Karina prefaces her story by explaining how her upbringing has shaped her belief in the spirit realm:

I’ve always been around people that have either believed in ghosts or encounters with the spirits. My dad is Greek, and my mom is Russian, and both cultures are very much in tune with the other side.

It’s a pretty cool (but chilling) story. Her second story airs tomorrow night at 9 pm EST.  I haven’t been able to find any spoilers for it, but I know it’s not a repeat of her first story.  Should be interesting to watch…if I don’t scare the bejesus out of myself like I have been watching that show for the past few weeks! ;-)

Dancing with the Stars – Who Wore it Better? Part VII

Holy cannoli, kids! Can you believe we’re already into Part VII of our series? That means, as of this post, you’ve seen 49 dittoed costumes.  FORTY-NINE.  And there’s still more to come! The folks at Randall sure are getting their money’s worth out of these dresses, eh? ;-)

But you’d better enjoy it while it lasts, kids – once season 11 premieres, Heidi and I may be too busy to continue this series and still do our regular season features (DWTS By the Numbers, the power rankings, the Cheesecake Awards…all the in-season stuff you love!).  And the beautiful Marcela only has so many pictures she can share with us! So unless anyone’s got a cache of (decent-quality, un-watermarked) pictures from all 10 seasons that you’d be willing to share with two very appreciative bloggers ;-), please…savor every last one of these costume contrasts ;-)  (Heidi: No question, we may be too busy starting Friday when the Pros find out if they’re back for the season or not. ;-) )

Battle of the purple cut-out bodice dress with the black & blue ruffled skirt: Cheryl’s paso with Maurice in season 7 vs. some random pro Sandra Udis in some random pro dance in a subsequent season :-P

Courtney: Ok, we confess: we have no clue who the blonde is, or what performance this dress was dittoed in.  Believe me, we searched high & low – to no avail.  So if anyone does know which performance this was, please, do share! :-) Well I don’t think the dress does either lady any favors…hell, the purple bodice seems to clash with the electric blue trim on the skirt! And this was unfortunately during Cheryl’s “frumpy” season – the season where every single costume they put her in just wasn’t flattering.  But her shoes seem to match better, so I’ll give it to Cheryl.

Heidi: Another week, another gawdawful dress. Lordy.  I think besides the blue versus purple is definitely a problem – but Cheryl’s hair is just to severe for that cut of dress. It makes it worse. I have to agree with Courtney – the matching shoes give Cheryl they edge, although the dress sucks on both of them.

The winner: Cheryl, by a foot.

Battle of the royal blue, asymmetrical silk ballgown with beaded belt: Debi’s foxtrot relay with Maks in season 9 vs. Lacey in the “story telling” pro demo in season 10

Heidi: This is one of those rare instances when the dress in motion doesn’t do the wearer a favor. I seem to recall that Debi, when dancing, didn’t look fab in this dress, but she sure looks great in it standing still!! I have no clue what Lacey has going on here.

Courtney: Ok, I’m sorry, but this pic of Lacey is just cracking me up – she looks like she has to poop or something.  Like one of the dancing people in the Pepto commercials.  Yes, I am feeling extra juvenile this week, kids :-P Awkward stances aside, I like the dress better on Debbie – looks more dignified and flatters her figure better.  Lacey, like Cheryl, seems to have the problem with certain silhouettes making her look heavier than she really is.

The winner: Debi for dignity ;-)

Battle of the skimpy, pink overdye silk ballgown: Edyta’s foxtrot with Joey in season 3 vs. Anna’s preseason photo shoot in season 6

Courtney: Wow, is it just me, or is there something delightfully ho-tastic about this dress? :-P Well, really just the top of it – it’s awfully scandalous as far as ballgowns go.  Without being too lewd…let’s just say it looks like something one might see at an “adult novelty store” or a “gentlemen’s club”.  But what’s really funny to me is that for as skankalicious as the cut of the dress is, the color seems really sweet & demure…almost like a prom dress.  Anywho…the cloying pink color of this number seems to flatter Anna better than it does Edyta.

Heidi: Let me be more crude – you’re likely to see the top part of this outfit in a place with a lot of Poles. ;-) And I don’t mean Poland. Anyway, Anna manages to actually remove some of the skank-tastic-ness from this dress. A combination of the color and her pose and the sweet smile. Gotta hand it to her. ;-) Is this two weeks in a row that Edyta has actually lost????

Courtney: Indeed it has been two weeks in a row.  Maybe Edyta isn’t the costume goddess we once thought she was!

The winner: Anna…for making the dress look more like it’s from Russia, than from Pole-land ;-) Get it??? Hehe!

Battle of the long-sleeve, black mesh cut-out ballgown: Edyta’s tango with Jason in season 6 vs. Kym’s tango with Mayo in the new pro competition in season 8

Heidi: Kym, Kym, Kym!!  Fierce expression and a rockin’ bod. Best boobage on the show. She’s sooo hot. But besides how fantastic Kym looks – have we ever seen Edyta slump her shoulders like that before?? It really detracts from her whole…Edyta-ness!!

Courtney: Some minor tweakage does a world of good here! Glad they replaced Edyta’s flesh-colored hip strap with something more substantial that matches the dress – doesn’t look odd like it did before.  And Heidi and I agree – Kym has the most fierce expressions and really works her costumes for all they’re worth.  So hot!

The winner: Kym’s fierce face and rockin’ bod (and awesome boobage!) wins over Edyta’s slumpy shoulders.

Battle of the olive green, army-inspired paso dress: Julianne’s paso with Cody in season 7 vs. Aliona Vilani in the pro dance to Rascal Flatts in season 8

Courtney: Anyone else remember Aliona when she tried out for season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance with her boyfriend Leonidas Proskurov? I thought for sure she was going to make it to the top 20…but thankfully, they took Chelsie instead – I daresay Chelsie had both the chops and the personality to succeed on the show.  Ok, back on topic.  I really don’t care for this dress.  I never really understood why they opted for a military theme while dancing to Shiny Toy Guns, but I guess I’ll give it to Julianne – the dress looks a lot less “clunky” on her, while I think Aliona is weighed down by bulky boots & dark leggings.

Heidi: I only remember Aliona from her Viennese Waltz with Derek on the last tour – amazingly beautiful dance. Kudos to Maks for that choreography, although I’ve heard the pros have a lot to do with their own solos. Anyway, not only do Aliona’s leggings kill it, but Julianne really has it pulled together. Between the cute little hat and the hair that goes with it, she’s workin’ it the right way.

The winner: Julianne by a hat.

Battle of the two-piece, ruffle-y yellow beaded Latin dress: Karina’s mambo with Rocco in season 7 vs. Edyta in the pro dance to Robin Thicke in season 8 vs. one of the performers in the Tiempo Libre performance in season 9

Heidi: Ick. Yellow. I got nuthin’ else.

Courtney: I’m afraid I’ve fallen in yellow costume apathy, because I’m having a hard time liking some of the yellow dresses we’ve featured in the past few weeks.  This ensemble is just ok for me.  Sorry Edyta, but the way your hair is styled just doesn’t seem to mesh well with the outfit; and Tiempo Libre dancer, it looks a bit ill-fitting on you.  Karina, it looks like you’ve been playing with your It Cosmetics Airbrush Abs kit again, but I’ll give it to you…even with an ace bandage around your ankle, you manage to pull this one off.

The winner: Karina…is it bad that she wins this one by an ace bandage and some airbrushed abs?

Battle of the red, beaded Latin dress with the sweetheart neckline: Marissa’s mambo with Tony in season 6 vs. Niecy’s preseason photo shoot with Louis in season 10

Courtney: Marissa, no doubt – I just absolutely love her expression in this picture!  She just looks like she’s having the most fun ever.  The beads are just sparkling away, and she’s got a huge smile on her face.  Niecy, on the other hand – I feel like she falls victim to the curse of the preseason photo shoot.  It always seems to make the dresses look less than impressive, and everyone seems to look so…I don’t know, made-up? Niecy and Louis both look kinda artificial to me, like they’ve been over-airbrushed.

Heidi: I agree, I love the look on Marissa’s face (although I didn’t like her ‘tude in post show interviews at all – seemed petty and jealous) – like she can’t believe she’s doing it. I also can’t stand Louis anymore either, so that’s a point against Niecy – although I like her just fine.

The winner: Marissa by a grin.

Get your copycat costume fix while it lasts, kids! Reminisce over parts I, II, III, IV, V, & VI of “Who Wore it Better?” ;-)

DWTS Season 11 – Nancy Lee Grahn…perhaps in?

You may remember us reporting a couple months back that General Hospital soap star Nancy Lee Grahn had tweeted something about being on a possible casting list for season 11.  Well, beyond that, she hasn’t really said or done much to suggest that she was, in fact, going to do DWTS…until now.

Whilst browsing around for GH spoilers today at soaps.com (yes, I’m an avid GH viewer!), I noticed the following posted under the “Comings & Goings” section:

* Nancy Lee Grahn has gone on vacation, which means Alexis won’t be seen again until after the actress returns in mid-September.

Now while this may seem pretty pedestrian on the surface (everyone takes time off - soap stars included), it just seems like a very interesting time for Nancy to take a vacation…especially since the entire cast of season 11 will be present at the live cast annoucement/press conference on August 30.  Then you add in the fact that the celebs start practicing with their pros immediately after the cast is announced, and they’re also wrapped up with preseason photo shoots, media, etc…maybe Nancy decided to put GH on hold for a few weeks to prepare for this season of DWTS.

Also interesting to note – the major storyline that Nancy’s character, Alexis Davis, had been involved in at the beginning of the summer has pretty much drawn to a close, which leaves Alexis only appearing in one or two scenes a week…which leaves Nancy with more time to devote to other ventures ;-)

What do you guys think: is Nancy’s vacay strategically-planned to coincide with the first few weeks of DWTS training, or is it just a strange coincidence?

DWTS Season 11 Rumor and Innuendo – August 16, 2010

Remember way back when when I talked about the rumor of Xzibit being on the show this season?? I talked about it in this post and this post.

Well, interesting coincidence (or not?) – Xzibit is on site this week with Extreme Makeover Home Edition helping with a house in Wisconsin.  Why is this relevant, you ask?  Mainly because the episode being filmed is a DWTS themed episode. :-) Really, it’s about using dance to fight obesity and a bunch of DWTS pros were there for the day (and Derek is apparently staying all week). That’s pretty interesting for a reason that didn’t occur to me until one of Derek’s fans at PureDerekHough asked me the question (thanks DJ!) when looking at pictures of Xzibit with the DWTS Pros also on site – “Wasn’t Xzibit rumored to be on DWTS?”  Why yes, DJ, he was – and now he’s the only non-DWTS person on the Extreme Makeover set, surrounded by Derek, Mark, Chelsie, Tony and Anna. That’s too big a coincidence for me to let is slide by un-mentioned. :-)

Well, people?? Just a coincidence?? Or, are they doing a clever tie in – DWTS pros and one of the celebs build a house? Keep in mind that Extreme Make Over Home Edition doesn’t have a season premiere until September 26 – nearly a week after DWTS own premiere. :-)

The first several posts on PureDerekHough have pictures (and one vid) from the site – and links to where you can see more pictures of the various professionals. A couple really cute pictures of Chelsie, John. ;-)

Oh, and they are doing some 80′s theme thing, which is why everyone is dressed kinda dorky. Xzibit is the man in the orange.

DWTS Stat Class: What’s Running Order Got to Do with It?

With 10 seasons of DWTS behind us now, we’re at an interesting place – we’ve got enough data and scores at our disposal to do some interesting statistical analyses of the show.  Ever wonder if there’s any interesting patterns in scoring, running order, dance selection, or even pro pairings? Well, wonder no more – because we’re about to run those numbers, and bring some surprising patterns to light…I like to call it “DWTS Stat Class”. :-D

Here’s an interesting fact: out of the 83 regular, weekly eliminations (not counting elims that determined placements in the finals or withdrawals from the competition – the math just gets too tricky with those) in the 10 seasons of DWTS, only 39 of them were couples that were that week’s lowest scorer – roughly 47%.  So what does that mean? Well, that the other 53% of the time, some factor other than a low score resulted in a couple getting sent home.  While the obvious answer to some might be “Well those couples just weren’t as popular!”, there’s no scientific, finite way to measure popularity on the show, and we unfortunately aren’t privy to the vote counts for each couple.  However, there are other factors we can take an objective measurement of – running order, dance choice, even the pro you’re paired with…and that’s where some interesting stats pop up.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional statistician, nor am I a Vegas sports bookie – I am well aware that these calculations are not perfect, nor are they particularly sophisticated.  There are simply too many variables to account for in order make these stats “airtight”, and quite frankly, I don’t have the time or the desire to try.  These are just general observations, to be taken with a grain of salt – so if anyone starts complaining in the comments about this not being “scientific” enough, go run the numbers yourself…I’ll even publish your findings on this site.  But you don’t get to bitch & moan if you can’t do better yourself.  Mmmmmkay? ;-)

Today’s topic? Running order.  The question: is it possible that the order in which the couples dance on performance night can affect their odds of elimination that week? The answer, based upon my findings: sure seems like it.

Some of you have heard me talk about the “money spot” (dancing last) or the “crap spot” (dancing first) in my power rankings – my general observation is that those who dance last are less likely to get sent home, as their performances are fresh in the viewers’ minds when they’re voting after the show; those who dance first are more at risk of getting sent home, as an entire show’s length has elapsed since their performance and they’re often forgotten by the voters.

Well, after taking a closer look at the running order of eliminated couples, it seems as though the numbers are consistent with my first hypothesis – only 3 out of the 83 eliminations were couples that had danced last on performance night (or one of 2 performance nights, if there was no elimination previous week, so the couples would have danced twice before a particular elimination); it may also be worth noting that two of the couples, Joey McIntyre & Ashly Costa and Ty Murray & Chelsie Hightower, were also the low scorers that week (and both were eliminated in the semifinals, when scores are of greater importance) – so their departure may have had more to do with a low score than the order in which they danced.  Based on that, it seems to me that, unless a couple does exceptionally poorly any given week, if they dance last – the chances of them getting eliminated that week are slim to none, unless it’s one of the final weeks of the competition. Guess if you’re a couple having an off-week, you should hope and pray that you get to go last!

As for my “crap” spot hypothesis about going first – I was wrong.  Only 11 out of 83 eliminations were from couples that had danced first on performance night (or, again, on at least one of 2 performance nights, if there was no elimination the previous week and the couples danced twice before an elimination).  That’s only about 13.25%.  However, there was an overwhelming percentage of eliminations for couples who danced 2nd in the running order during the week they were eliminated – about 30%, by far the greatest of all the running order positions. And this was regardless of how many couples total danced that week!  Of those, only 9 were actually the lowest scorer during the week they were eliminated – so maybe the other 16 were part of the “curse of #2”.  I guess it makes sense to me – if you go first, you’re still at least the first one viewers have seen, so they’ll likely remember you because of it; but if you go second (or anywhere in the middle of the pack), you’re more likely to get lost in the shuffle. A good example of the new “crap spot” in action – Shannen Doherty.  Poor girl got a pretty lousy draw in the running order lottery – she danced 2nd in week one, and 1st in week two…overall, a pretty hard combo to overcome, which may have had something to do with her getting sent home despite not being the week’s lowest scorer.

So what about the “middle of the pack” positions, you ask? Well things get a bit tricky there, since there hasn’t been the same number of competitors each season, so I’m not going to go into the details of positions 3, 4, 5…etc.  However, two interesting points: one, no one who has danced in a position greater than 10th in the running order in a given week has gotten sent home; two, over 70% of the eliminations have been couples who danced in the first half of the show the night they performed.  What can we extrapolate from that? Well, it seems like the closer your performance is to the end of the show, the better – if you can’t go last, at least you can hope that you perform in the second half of the show, because it seems a helluva lot safer than dancing in the first half!

Here’s another interesting tidbit, which I already sort of touched on above: the closer you get to the end of the season, the less running order seems to matter.  At about the halfway point in each season, the patterns I’ve mentioned above seem to show up less frequently – and couples tend to be sent home based more on low score than anything else.  Why? Probably because it’s easier to get lost in the middle of a big group of couples (such as the first half of the season) than it is to get forgotten in a much smaller group (second half of the season).  The fact that people have already established their favorites and know who the strong couples are by the middle of the season may also play a role – the second half of the season really seems to separate the men from the boys (and the women from the girls!), so to speak, and actually giving good performances with high scores tends to matter more.

So what can we conclude about running order, class? ;-)

Well, we can’t really conclude anything – lord knows this show can be completely unpredictable at times, and no pattern we find is guaranteed to hold true.  HOWEVER, we can say it seems as though you’re safe if you dance last, pretty safe if you dance in the second half of the show, slightly at a disadvantage if you dance in the first half, and you’re almost totally screwed if you dance 2nd.  I guess 2nd place really is first place loser ;-) But if it’s later in the season – well, then you just better dance like there’s no tomorrow!

Dancing with the Stars – Who Wore it Better, Part VI

Alright kids…another week, another batch of 7 costumes to compare, contrast, and critique! And I know you all don’t agree wholeheartedly with everything Heidi & I have to say, so please…speak up.  Show us that you give a damn ;-) (Heidi: I’m in a really bad mood because this is turning into a 60 hour work week. Warning, warning!!)

And again, many, many thanks to Marcela in Brazil for sending us a plethora of pictures of dittoed costumes that she found ;-) Você é maravilhosa, Marcela!

Battle of the purple & pink heavily-stoned ballgown: Kim’s “Pink Panther” foxtrot with Mark in season 7 vs. Chelsie’s preseason photo shoot in season 8

Courtney: As much as I don’t particularly care for Kim’s personality (especially her rather blasé demeanor while she was on the show), I think this suits Kim’s complexion and hair color better than it does Chelsie – seems to make her look ruddy.  But definitely one of my favorite ballgowns they’ve ever had on the show – love the color combo and just the simplicity of the cut.

Heidi: I think it shortens Chelsie’s body too much – maybe the ankle length?? Or maybe just the pose. And I agree, it definitely goes better with the darker hair and completion on Kim.

The winner: Kim, in spite of her personality.

Battle of the yellow, cut-out, feathered Latin dress: Brooke in the samba smackdown in season 7 vs. Cheryl in the pro dance to Robin Thicke in season 8

Heidi: This is a stupid dress. I don’t like yellow, I don’t like the cutouts, I don’t like it on either of them. :::stamps feet::::  ;-)

Courtney: Now I love yellow – but the cut of this dress is just silly-looking to me.  Makes both ladies look like Tweety Bird or something.  It also doesn’t do justice to professional American rhythm competitor Jaana Lillemagi. But since we’ve already determined that Cheryl can pull off yellow with her skin tone, I’m gonna go with her.

The winner: Despite Heidi’s temper tantrum, Cheryl looks the best as a cartoon canary. ;-)

Battle of the royal blue satin cut-out Latin dress: Julianne’s cha-cha with Apolo in season 4 vs. Anna in the pro paso demo in season 8

Courtney: This dress is just extremely odd to me – doesn’t really feel like a Latin dress or a ballgown.  And Anna, you know I love you to bits, but man – you look GHASTLY in this dress.  I feel like it just makes Anna look pale, and something about the cut of it adds pounds to her otherwise flawless figure.  It’s not terrible on Julianne, per se; it’s just kind of a non-event.  Not bad, but not great.  So I’ll go with Julianne.

Heidi: Boy, you’re reading my mind here. This dress’s structure is not flattering to either girl. Luckily for Julianne, she comes off a bit better, due mainly due to the pose. Anna, who has a perfect figure, looks almost like she has a spare tire. It’s that stupid vertical pit of fabric, I think, combined with the straight cut across the hips.

The winner: Julianne by a pose.

Battle of the sparkly, gold, long-sleeve romper: Julianne’s freestyle with Helio in season 5 vs. Karina’s pro dance with Derek to Selena Gomez in season 9

Heidi: Well, I have mad love for Karina’s partner, plus I think it suits her hair and skin tone better. ;-)

Courtney: CAMEL TOE ALERT!!! Ladies, this is why skin-tight rompers should just be avoided altogether – it’s hard to mask this dreaded fashion faux pas.  It makes it hard for me to even really like this costume on either lady – but since it’s not quite so visible on Karina, I’m giving this one to her.

Heidi: Well I think that most of what you’re seeing is a function of fabric, camera angle and shadow. I don’t think there is a true camel toe (and god, even typing those words makes me throw up in my mouth a bit – thanks, Court).

Courtney: Camel toe is no laughing matter, my friend! Hehe ;-)

The winner: Karina, by a hotter partner and better angle.

Battle of the pink, fringy, sparkly Latin dress: Kym’s jive with Mark in season 5 vs. Marlee’s preseason photo shoot with Fabian in season 6

Courtney: Wow, what a difference lighting makes! I can assure you all that this is indeed the same dress – the lighting from Marlee’s photo shoot just really washes out the otherwise vibrant neon pink that we see in Kim’s jive. I’m not particularly wowed by the dress on either lady.  So again, I default to my wise cohort on this one ;-)

Heidi: Kym. Kym all the way. Better boobage, better lighting, a face full of joy. ;-)

The winner: Kym by default.

Battle of the black & white, sparkly patterned ballgown: Melissa’s foxtrot with Tony in season 8 vs. Anna in the pro dance to Michael Buble in season 9

Heidi: This is a pretty dress – I dig it. It looks good on both ladies, but I have to go with Anna, mainly because her shoes match better and I like her hair better. I don’t like the tight style that Melissa is wearing.

Courtney: I’ve got to give this one to Anna – like with Lacey & the zebra dress last week, the little “pop” of color of her red hair just seems to pair better with the black & white of the dress than Melissa’s darker hair.

The winner: Anna!! By a hair…and a shoe.

Battle of the red, sparkly, ruffle-y, cut-out Latin dress: Marlee’s cha-cha with Fabian in season 6 vs. Shawn’s preseason photo shoot with Mark in season 8

Courtney: Either I’m just getting sick of commenting on costumes (doubtful ;-) ) or I’ve seen this dress before – or rather, several dresses that seem nearly the same.  What is it with the costume department and red, ruffle-y, sparkly Latin dresses for the ladies? It’s becoming almost cliché. I guess I pick Shawn for this one – for once, the overall look of a dress actually seems more “finished” the 2nd go-round than it did for the first!

Heidi: Whoa. Marlee is WHITE. Way too white. Distractingly white. Gotta go with Shawn for her tan and her ear rings.

The winner: Shawn by a tan.

You know you love lookin’ at costumes.  So why not quell your appetite for fashion by reviewing parts I, II, III, IV, & V while you wait for next week’s edition? ;-)

DWTS Season 11 – Another Rumor Gets a Bit More Solid

:-) And that rumor is Landon Donovan. Another interesting non-denial. From Ryan Seacrest via Soccer Fanhouse:

In an interview Wednesday with Ryan Seacrest, Donovan avoided giving a definitive answer. When asked about the show, Donovan quipped, “You haven’t seen me dance, have you? … My only hope is that they don’t find a picture of me dancing somewhere in Vegas. That could be brutal.”

But don’t rule the L.A. Galaxy star out just yet. He certainly seemed amenable to the possibility.

“I’ve seen how many people watch the show,” Donovan said.

“I think my only request would be to get one of the really hot dancer girls,” Donovan said. “Those girls are so hot, and they’re so fit.”

Indeed.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
