DWTS Season 11, Week 6 – Dancing by the Numbers
Welcome to my stream of consciousness “Dancing by the Numbers” post. Forgive me in advance if I ramble. I have to say I was very disappointed in Rock night on DWTS. No, not just because Derek and Jennifer screwed up the end of their dance, although that didn’t help. I found myself with a general feeling of malaise last night after the show. Since then, I’ve been thinking about what the problem could be. Frankly, I keep coming back to the fact that, other than Derek and Maks both having great asses, there is no such thing as a good “theme” night. If they would have a theme about male pro butts in those nice tight pants that would be a theme I could get behind. Pardon the expression.
No, really – Derek, Maks…well done.
:::le sigh:::
Anyway, I think that all the themes are detracting from plain old dancing. WTF happened to just dancing? Derek, the guy who sticks up for the producers on a regular basis – because that’s who he is – says that the themes challenge him. Clearly, that is true – 50’s Paso and futuristic paso are the evidence for it. But dang. Those two stellar dances resulted from a simple “Era” night where everyone was handed a decade. Fine. All the rest of this crap – Rock Night, TV Theme Night, Story Night, guest celebrity judges (coming soon to a Ballroom near you) – give it a fucking rest already. Someone commented on a previous post that these theme nights may be good for ratings *right now* but in the long run it will have a negative impact on the show. I have to agree.
Really, who cares about a Paso when Rick Fox has really cool hair and Brandy is wearing crazy silver half skirt half pants? And the Band gets to play cool, contemporary music? And they have cool MTV scaffolding?? Tango? What Tango?? I was too busy wondering why they ripped up the cool black floor 30 minutes before show time. :::rolls eyes:::
You know it’s a bad frickin’ sign when the highlight of the show is the Top 10 dances of all time. Hey, between the Houghs and Cheryl Burke? Seven out of ten dances. Sounds about right to me.
And I totally called “Save a Horse” as number 1, although watching them all back to back I still believe that dance and Derek’s 50’s Paso should have switched places. Eh, whatever – top ten dances out of a thousand is pretty freaking cool. I also wasn’t that impressed with Apolo and Julianne’s Samba – but the Apolo/Julianne voting bloc is still going strong. The whole idea would be a lot better if they allowed ONE vote per email address. Period. I think that would have knocked one of Julianne’s dances out and pulled one of someone else’s in – like Kristi Yamaguchi maybe.
So, who’s going home? I have no frickin’ clue. Not a one. I don’t think there is any way to predict it and I don’t think anyone is actually safe. I think the closest to being safe is Brandy, of course, but nothing would shock me at this point. You wanna know why? Because nights like last night throw some fans into a tizzy and cause other fans to be complacent. I think that Jennifer will be safe because the judges were “mean” to her AND they had her in jeopardy last week. I think her fans probably went nuts on the voting. I think it’s possible the same is true for Kurt. What happens if Kurt and Jennifer come up? Kyle and Audrina become “at risk”. Hell, maybe even Bristol could leave BECAUSE she got a better score than ever. Like I said, complacency. ANYway, the scores at night’s end:
The Judges Scores and Percentages
| Place | Celebrity | Score | Percentage |
| 1. | Brandy | 36 | 17.39 |
| 2. | Audrina | 32 | 15.46 |
| 3. | Rick | 30 | 14.49 |
| 4. | Kyle | 30 | 14.49 |
| 5. | Jennifer | 29 | 14.01 |
| 6. | Bristol | 28 | 13.53 |
| 7. | Kurt | 22 | 10.63 |
Once you look at it in a list like that, a lot becomes clearer. A little.
Basically, we have Kurt in the basement, four people with essentially the same score (or close enough for govt. work) and Brandy at the top. What a nice little bell shaped curve. Unfortunately, in DWTS it doesn’t mean jack. So, what does Kurt have to do to stick around?? Well, he has to do better vote wise than someone else, by the following margins:
-Kurt needs 29k more votes per 1 million votes cast than Bristol, or;
-He needs 34k more votes per 1 million votes cast than Jennifer, or;
-He needs 38,700 more votes per 1 million votes cast than either Kyle or Rick.
It’s not looking good for Kurt, folks. But ya never know. That’s a lot of votes – but we don’t know how many votes are actually being cast. What about Bristol? Well, if Kurt does better than her by the above margin, she needs to catch and pass someone else in her little group in the middle:
-Bristol would need 4,900 more votes per 1 million votes cast to pass Jennifer, or;
-She needs 9,700 more votes per 1 million votes cast to pass Kyle or Rick, or;
-She needs 19,300 more votes per 1 million votes cast to pass Audrina.
On the face of it, it would seem easy for her to do better than Jennifer, Kyle or Rick – but last night wasn’t a typical night. The judges were very nice to Bristol and Kyle both and, like it or not, that influences how much people vote. So, did Palin fans rest on their laurels??
What about Jennifer?? Will Bristol get the 4,900 votes and Kurt the 34k votes?? Bristol, maybe, but Kurt?? I kinda doubt it. But lets say they vote like crazy for him and he does very well. What does Jennifer have to do?
-Jennifer would need 4,850 more votes per 1 million votes cast to beat either Kyle or Rick, or;
-She needs 14,500 more votes per 1 million votes cast to beat Audrina, and (just for reference);
-She needs 34,000 more votes per 1 million votes cast to beat Brandy.
That kinda makes me feel better about Jennifer’s chances because I think she can get 4,800 more votes than Kyle AND 15k more votes than Audrina. Audrina, while I would like to see her in the final 3 with Brandy and Jennifer, still worries me because I never remember what she did the next day, or even after the show is over. That said, I will be shocked if she goes home tonight. I won’t be shocked if she goes home next week, provided that Jennifer gets her act together. What would cause Audrina to be the “shocking” elimination THIS week?
-Jennifer gets 14,500 more votes per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Rick AND Kyle EACH get 9,700 more votes per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Kurt gets 48,400 more votes per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Bristol gets 19,400 more votes per 1 million votes cast.
Hmmmmm….frankly, I could see Jennifer, Rick, Kyle and Bristol all getting the necessary votes. But Kurt?? That’s a lot. I tend to doubt it.
So, I guess in looking at these numbers I feel like Brandy, Rick and Audrina are safe – and I really hope all 3 of them really are safe. I also THINK that Jennifer is safe. Ironically, I think it’s possible that the judges being harsh with Jennifer could spell the end for Bristol – fair and correct or not, it has an impact on how people vote.
That leaves us with Kurt, Kyle and Bristol. We’ve already talked about Kurt and Bristol, but just how safe is Kyle?? For Kyle to leave the following would have to happen:
-Rick gets ONE more vote than him
per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Jennifer gets 4,850 more votes per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Bristol gets 9,700 more votes per 1 million votes cast, and;
-Kurt gets 38,700 more votes per 1 million votes cast
Actually, with the exception of Kurt (again) I can see all of that happening. I think it really comes down to Kurt, Kyle and Bristol, still. And keep in mind that for Kyle and Bristol to be safe OVER Florence last week they only needed 5,500 and 16,500 more votes per 1 million cast, respectively. That’s really not that much.
Well, I can’t pick. Last night confused me too much. You guys pick – who’s going home?? I’m leaning toward Kurt – but I really don’t know. It could be anyone.

Awesome math post Heidi! I love these so much. You are right though. It was a confusing night and even by all of the reviews here, we can see that “tizzy” for how we were all thrown.
Anyway, I really hope it’s the Pistol to go home. But, I’m nervous it might be Kurt.
I felt your pain after last night’s show, m’dear – I didn’t even feel like ranking because the show just felt so…disheartening. Seeing the numbers, I’m leaning towards Kurt, but you could be right about Bristol – if the Bristol phenomenon is anything like the Kate Gosselin phenomenon last season, she got voted off the moment she actually started doing decently. Whether the Vote for the Worst folks jumped ship or her fans just got complacent, I don’t know…but I’m thinking (and hoping) that the Bristol fans didn’t vote in their usual numbers last night. Might give Kurt some hope…
…anyone know if Tom and/or Brooke have started tweeting about tonight’s show yet or not? If it is a shock elim, they may start making ambiguous comments about tonight’s departing couple in order to drum up suspense.
Does anyone remember the website that “shows” who will go home this week? I don’t know if it’s accurate or not, but, they’ve been right two weeks in a row. Plus, DialIdol, which, is not too heavily reliable because they don’t count internet votes, has Audrina & Tony in the bottom. We may be in for our “shock” elimination, folks! Buckle up!
@Courtney Here’s what Brooke tweeted “Thank you sooo much everyone who watched DWTS last night. We were #1! I have no idea who’s leaving us tonight. Don’t miss another Rock night”. I guess, we’ll decide if she truly knows or not.
After reading your post, I am leaning more and more towards Kurt. However, Bristol hasn’t been doing well, although she improved last night because like somebody else said she was in hold (except for that air guitar thing). So, logically, either of those two should go, but logic has nothing to do with this show and voting system.
I just want to add on the whole Rock Night theme…If Carrie Ann wanted to see a clean, CONTROLLED paso then go yell at the producers and not at Jennifer and Derek for trying to incorporate Rock into their routine. When I think about a rock concert, I hardly see people sitting on chairs and clapping to the beat. They are all OUT of control, screaming, head banging, stage diving and what not. So, dear Carrie Ann, shut the hell up!!
Nathan, it’s learntodance.com. It’s saying Bristol/Mark right now (for whatever that’s worth, which may not be much).
Nathan, you are right that this may be a shocking elimination night. I have no clue who is going home. Reading Heidi’s post, I would think Kurt but there was a lot of booing from the audience as the judges were mean to him as well as with Jennifer which would make fan rally more on the voting. Your are right about Audrina being in the bottom in DialIdol. She actually has been in the bottom for the past two weeks on their site. It does make me wonder if she is starting to not get much support. She is good only technically. The Learn to dance site had Brandy, Jennifer and Rick as top three with Bristol as lowest, but that could have changed by now and not sure how accurate it is.
When I look at your numbers, the ones who I think will go home tonight are Kyle and Lacey. I just have difficulty believing that either one has a strong fan base, and I find it believable that Kurt could get the 38,700 votes from the NFL and ladies-who-love-him crowd.
Pricesse Heidi, my hands down. You said everything I wanted to (but didn’t know how, with my bad english ahahahahaha).
That’s it. The show is focusing on visual and forgeting what we like, want to see: THE DANCE!
(Just disagree a little bit about top ten. I love apolo’s samba. That dance made me cheer for him. And first dance SHOULD be 50′s paso… are you kiding? I still watching and sayin “How this boy could create this dance? He’s a genius”)
I was reading the message board over at Vote For the Worst, and they don’t give a shit about this season, they’ve basically given up on this show especially since the Hoff and the Situation are gone. Bristol is not their chosen child, but they love taking credit if she stays.
Thanks for the post. What a crazy week and very hard to measure what’s going on (because everything is going on all at once). I’m sorry this season has turned me into a curmudgeon about wanting to see plain old dancing. My guess is that Bristol will stay and Kyle or Kurt will go.
Boy, it’s a sad sad day when Vote for the Worst doesn’t care about the show anymore.
I’d kind of like to see Bristol one more week – she really showed improvement last night and I’d like to see if that was a fluke or if she can maintain. Kurt I really liked from the beginning, but I don’t think he’s improved week to week all that much, to be honest (don’t hate me
Looking at Heidi’s numbers, it could well be Kurt going home, but I’ve always felt the NFL had a strong voting base so he might be able to pull it out.
Hard to say though – I thought Bristol was history last week, so what do I know !
Rock night was a mess. And next week, there’s more shenanigans. Good grief! Enough already. My only hope is that some of the guest judges are SO good that maybe next season we’ll get some new faces behind that desk.
Kurt might have too big of a hole. But Bristol might be the surprise boot. When Kate finally left, it was after a subdued dance. It was just whatever. Tango just suited Bristol Kate’s best dance was a tango too!
According to Carrie Ann’s twitter: “I do have to judge everyone the same and part of what I judge on is based on their own abilities.” Don’t see how you can both judge the same but vary it on ability. And why should someone’s ability affect score? Apparently, she must think Kurt has LOTS of ability… LOL
LOL ^^ The way she’s tweeting at Twitter, people must really be chewing her out.
Personally i loved Rock Night!! It was the theme ight so far! But i love right music, and it was pretty cool gettin to see Bret Micheals ( Even though obviously his advice didnt help…..LOL! ).
Oh and Heidi based on this dancing by the numbers post im guessing the Cheesecake Awards will be awesome this week!
Oh gosh, Im really worried about tonight!! Can anyone say ” Sabrina and Mark “? Bringing back any memories……?
Zach, the scary thing is that Sabrina and Mark were eliminated on October 30th, 2007. Very close to the date and I have a funny feeling people have been lax in the votes and someone shocking is going home. But, you never know.
Well its not looking good for Kurt. And i think t=next week will be a breakthrough for Audrina, I have a good feeling, Audrina i bet is getting alot more votes than you think Heidi, She aint going nowhere. Or it would be like extremely shocking if she did.
IKR, Nathan! This is a bad time for voting!! I gotta a bad feeling, I wonder just how safe Jennifer and Derek are?
@ Zach, Or even Brandy!
Brooke just tweeted “shocking results” tonight. Who do you think is going home now?
Anyone other than Kurt or Bristol would be shocking – but I am worried about Jen. Ah, well, if she gets voted off I’ll get lots more sleep on Mondays.
It sounds like it will be Brandy, Jennifer or Audrina. But we now know that Kurt and Bristol are safe
I say Audrina b/c people don’t remember her that much or Kyle b/c his fanbase is smaller compared to some of the other contestants.
Heidi, I think you’re absolutely right about the themes. Why can’t they just dance instead? I think the quality and scores would be a lot better if they didn’t have a theme to worry about.
I can’t wait for Bristol to go, though. She should’ve gone a while ago.
Well, knowing Brook she would be shocked by Bristol too.
Brooke might even be surprised by Kurt. LMAO
LOL Derek. Don’t let it get you down, babe.
Kurt (yay) and Bristol (bleach) are safe. Jen’s in jeopardy. She better not be eliminated!
Yay, Bristol and Kurt are safe!! Happy here.
Uh-oh, Jen’s “in jeapordy”? What does that mean for Brandy and Audrina? Oh boy, if ANY of these 3 ladies go home, I will be PISSED!!!!!
Yay! Now if Jennifer and Derek are safe in the end I’ll be happy. I had a feeling they would put her “in jeopardy” since she did score her lowest and they like the drama. Lol I loved Derek’s expression on his face when he was standing there alone and then you can see him mouth, “are in jeopardy”
Well, I guess it’s safe to say that Kurt has a few fans out there.
Oh gosh! Kurt and Bristol SAFE?!?!?! Crap!!
I warned you about Karma, Zach.
If Jennifer leaves I might have to vote for Rick because he and Cheryl are pretty cute together.
Kyle’s in jeopardy… :/
Loved Derek’s expression but didn’t care for Jennifer fake crashing down. It makes it look like it’s a joke for her. And I really want to like her but it’s not happening
Rick is safe, Heidi
Don’t want to brag (lie!) but I called Kyle. It’s still not over obviously..
Why would they announce Kyle in jeapordy if we still need results for Audrina & Brandy. This is NOT COOL!!!!
I think perhaps you take this competition a bit too seriously, sasa. I prefer Jennifer’s lighthearted to Brandy’s verging on desperate.
Clearly either Audrina or Brandy is going to be in Jeopardy. I’m going to say Audrina.
Well, I prefer something in the middle. As you would say: I like what I like. So we agree.
Kristi Yamaguchi and Apolo Ohno are coming back to DWTS next week!
Brandy is safe, Audrina’s in jeopardy. :/ Who’s going home between Audrina, Kyle, & Jennifer? I pick Kyle.
Was it just me or was Audrina whining? Uh-oh, Tony’s attitude is rubbing off on her!
Apolo = yummy
Brandy is SAFE!!!! Now, please, Audrina!!!
Kyle & Lacey are safe OMG!
Audrina got sent home! This is horrible! :’(
Oh man. that fucking sucks donkey balls.
Omigosh!!!!!!!
How could they keep Bristol over Audrina? This is ridiculous!
I totally hate this!!!!!!!!!!!!
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! This show is officially dead to me. Bye DWTS!
I confess I don’t terribly mind her leaving based on the dancing but she was the sweetest and most gracious loser ever. Aww.
I think they should give Tony a break from the show next season. His choreography just never changes. Every dance looks like the last one.
I am so sorry Nathan that Audrina got eliminated tonight. It should not have been her leaving.
Wow, Heidi, you must be upset – you spelled the whole word!
I had a feeling about Audrina. I thought it was going to be her since on the boards there wasn’t much passion about her for or against. When that happens she becomes expendable. I’m sorry she left, I think she had so much potential.
Wow! 2nd week in a row that Bristol has overcome a multiple point gap.
SO SORRY NATHAN!!!!!!
Well at least it wasn’t Jennifer! Audrina is a very good dancer but I didn’t see her acting skills improving.
Bristol has a huge voting block. I think the Tea Party is as big as Utah voting Osmond.
Could I be right? Did the judges underestimate the Palin voting block? I do feel they adjust their scores to counter viewer votes (sorry to sound conspiratorial). But I think they do it to keep the show entertaining and suspenseful. If I’m right, can they counter the votes to maintain a contest or is Bristol on track to at least the finals? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think about her much one way or the other – rather, I’m thinking about the weight her mom can throw. Don’t feel shy to tell me I’m off on this.
DialIdol had Audrina and Tony at the bottom, although I know that they haven’t been that accurate in the past.
Re: the voting block – I think it’s more that people didn’t vote for Audrina because of those vacant eyes.
I really felt bad for Audrina tonight. I wished the show gave us glimpses of the real frightened girl behind the vacant eyes like they did in the confessional. She worked her ass off and had some good lines in her dancing. I wished she brought some of that reality into her performances, she should not have gone

@Buttercup, absolutely it would be a travesty if they sent Jennifer home, but I didn’t think for one minute she was in danger, she has a lot of loyal fans and of course the Derek voting block to see it happen. I still think she’s on track to take this puppy if her body lets her.
While I think it’s very possible that Bristol has a huge voting bloc, the margin required for her to surpass Audrina was really not that huge. What’s REALLY shocking is that Kurt pulled out that number of votes to beat Audrina. Now THAT is a voting bloc.
LOL Meggie. Yes, I am actually a tad upset. I don’t think Audrina should have left. I really liked her. I like Bristol too, but Audrina is clearly the better dancer.
Nathan – my sympathies.
Oh man. I am so sad about Audrina. This just isn’t right. Nathan, so sorry!! Crap!!!! This is just not right. It should be Bristol. The Tea Party is keeping her in and messing with this whole competition. Wow, this has to be the weirdest Season ever!!
Which was more shocking guys? Sabrina and Mark: Season 5 or Audrina and Tony: Season 11? You Vote! Im calling it a tie! But this is totally the most shocking since Sabrina and Mark i would say.
Agreed most shocking elmination since Sabrina and Mark. Bristol needs to GO people. ugh! This season is so weird
Most shocking – definintely Sabrina and Mark! They had some pizazz along with technique.
Sabrina&Mark by a mile. They were frighteningly good already on week 1. Technique + performance + chemistry.
I agree but this for me is the most shocking since then.
I think there were a couple which could be considered “shocking”.. Lil’ Kim before Ty (although I enjoyed Ty as much as anybody), Aiden Turner before Kate Gosselin or in fact anybody before Kate Gosselin, Melissa J. Hart before Louis Vito and M. Irving (again, although I loved Louis with Chelsie and Michael is just uber cool)..
