DWTS, Season 11, Week 6 – Which Costume Was Your Favorite?
Once again the costume designer for the show, Randall Christensen, and his team had their work cut out for them. To their already busy schedules they had to create “rocker” looks as well as additional costumes for the dance marathon. On the ‘sense of panic’ they were feeling, he said, “I literally chew my nails down to the quick because we have to shop for fabric and trim for 28 costumes in a day.” Here is more from Style List.
Brandy and Maksmim Chmerkovskiy: Dressed in form-fitting metallic pants, an inventive half skirt of silver and foil burnout chiffon, and a skintight bustier that miraculously didn’t bust loose, Brandy wore Christensen’s (and StyleList’s!) favorite costume of the night.
“Brandy has long, dancer legs, and we just had to show them off, even if they were wrapped in chrome and foil,” he says. “Her body screams dance. She’s a designer’s dream.”
As for that bustier, Christensen was mum on his workroom secrets. “All I can say is that after 25 years in the business, I have literally seen it all and learned tricks to keep everything in place.”
Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani: The effortless drama of the Bongo model’s red-hot, abdomen-baring paso doble costume had StyleList curious: How do you make fabric move like that?
“Bias cuts and silk charmeuse are great helps,” Christensen explains. “Also we added a one-inch band of horsehair to the hem to give the skirt the lift it needed as it spins.”
Rick Fox and Chery Burke: The hand-sewn R & F on the back of the athlete’s mod, sleeveless jacket was inspired by some “fantastic crystal rhinestone trims” Christensen found on his manic pre-show shopping spree.
Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer: Christensen’s tendency to put the crowd-pleasing teen star and his youthful partner in playful colors is a nod to their youth.
“It is really refreshing to work with such energy,” he says. “And Lacey definitely loves to be different and try unexpected things.”
From the DWTS Make-up team at Facebook, here is how they did Brandy’s “lips”.
Brandy’s lip’s were FIERCE! I created them by first applying MAC’s gel liner in blacktrack all over lips then Makeup Forever’s Flash color in # 731 on top with Beth Bender Beauty’s Glam Gloss in Nashville on top….Vamp!
They said will be posting more information for how they created the “rock” looks soon.
In something related, here is something Cheryl posted on her twitter before the show last night. With this picture, she said, “That’s where my hair extension went!!!” 😀
So, what did you think of the costumes and make-up this week? Did you like all the “Guy-liner” on the male dancers? Personally, I thought they over did that a little. lol But, it was ok. Be sure to vote in our Poll below while adding your thoughts. Consider what they wore for both dances as you weigh in.
My Fave: So many good ones. But, I’m going with Maks and Brandy. The Mad Max feel was strong and both were sexy for both dances!
My Least Fave: Bristol and Mark. It looked liked she pulled out a pair of her own sweats for the group dance. Boring.
Oh Vogue! Your always so biast! In a good way, of course. 😀
My fave was Anna. Nothing could be hotter than that!
LOL thanks Zack..I think. lol So, which costume was your fave?
Buttercup, Anna was so pretty as always too.
I liked Audrina’s, Jennifer’s and Maks’ costumes
I didn’t like Anns’s and Laceys’
Liked Brandy’s both costumes, Jennifer’s and Bristol’s Tango outfits and the hot pink T shirt on Kurt.
Brandy and Maks, loved the whole tango look! And their marathon costumes too, so cute!
Oops, I should have said Jen’s Paso and Bristol’s Tango outfit. I voted Brandy since I liked both hers.
For the individual dances I have to say I liked Bristol & Mark’s costumes best, I found the rest distracted from the dances. To quote myself “All the other costumes (except Anna-more to follow on her’s) looked more like “What not to Wear – the Future Edition” than Rock & Roll. Anna just looked like she was channeling Princess Leia.”
I think I was a little bit bothered by the fact that all the costumes this week felt like paso costumes – maybe it was a result of the rock theme, and everyone felt compelled to wear corsets and more edgy stuff. While I agree that Anna looked spot-on as always :-), my favorite this week was actually Bristol – loved the purple military-inspired dress, and the hair and makeup looked very pretty.
Loved Cheryl’s boots. Hated Jennifer’s makeup. Prolly would have liked Brandy’s tango dress better if they ditched the metallic leggings underneath and just gave her a dress with a really high slit – she’s got great legs. Don’t really know how I feel about the marathon outfits…everything felt like such a hodgepodge. Some people went the more cutesy, polka-dotted route; others went edgier; Bristol & Mark went…hip-hop? I guess I liked Brandy & Maks’ the best, since it looked good – but it seemed a little more Abercrombie to me than it did rock ‘n’ roll. And dammit – Lacey was wearing those damn plasticky clogs she seems to love so much again. I hate those shoes!
I caught a glimpse of Lacey’s feet and wondered what the hell was it I was seeing. So she’s known for wearing those things, huh? And I agree on terrible makeup for Jennifer.
Zack, It’s biased, sweetie. I get accused of it often enough, I should know. 🙂 We all got a bias babe.
I like Derek’s pants the best, followed closely by Maks’ pants.
I really sort of hated all the individual routine costumes, but thought Derek and Jenn’s marathon outfits were cute (and very Grease and Outsiders-y), as well as Audrina and Tony’s.
Vogue – You didn’t put a line in the survey for Tom & Brooke! 🙂
lol Oh no David sorry!! lol
Heidi, oh most definitely!!! 😀
Oh ik Heidi we all know mines Bristol! I thought Audrina and Tony looked awesome! AND THEN THIS COLD COLD WORLD KICKED THEM OFF!!!! LOL! 😀 Oh and thx for the correction Heidi! I need it ha 😛
Speaking of Bias – Gilles has some against Jennifer. That’s just great as he’s one of the 3 guest judges who also happen to be former partners of Cheryl’s. That’s like a DOUBLE bias. Fan-fucking-tastic. So, three of Cheryl’s former partners, one of Maks’…who else?? Are they going to be able to give points to their former partners??
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20437241,00.html
The list that I saw was Drew and Emmitt (Cheryl), Apolo and Helio (Julianne), Mel B (Maks), and Kelly O (Louis). Didn’t see Gilles listed as a guest judge, although that makes more sense than Kelly O.
I guess I was thinking that each couple would have only 1 guest judge based on the song/dance. So if Cheryl/Rick get Apolo’s quickstep, Apolo will be their guest judge. Since a pro won’t get the same song again, he/she won’t be judged by his/her former partner. Didn’t read that anywhere though, so I could be full of crap. 🙂
what the hell are TPTB thinking!?! this is just getting messier and messier by the week – pretty soon, there won’t be any time left for dancing! BTW, mmc – I don’t think Apolo is going to be a judge, he’s a team captain along with Kristy so perhaps Gilles will be sitting behind that desk after all.
Previous champs as team leaders? OK, don’t know exactly how that’s going to play out, but I could get on board with it. I think. Maybe. Depends.
But then also 6 guest judges? Isn’t the judging confusing enough already? How can these guests not be biased towards their previous partner – hell, even the “real” judges can barely keep their bias to themselves.
I am pretty disappointed that they will get rid of Rick Fox this way. I’m really starting to dislike this season as much as season 9.
Andie, why do you think Rick Fox will be the one to go?
Agreed! Loved Bristol’s costume. Jennifer had on too much make-up! It made her look really old! Loved Maks’ pants (well what was in them!), and didn’t like Brandy’s silver one-legged leotard. Rick looked ridiculous! Sorry to be so negative, but it’s the bad ones that stand out in my mind!
my favs were brandy and maks even though their costume was not perfect. i was not crazy about the half skirt part. i liked bristol and mark’s tango outfits but their marathon dance outfit was atrocious. it made bristol look 20 lbs heavier than she is.
