DWTS Season 11, Week 9 – Your Friday Media & News
TGIF Everyone! How is your Friday so far? I hope all is well and you are taking cue from the show and your favorite dancers making sure to include dancing to something in your routines and schedules daily.
First up in reporting to you today, we have “official” word from ABC on what is to take place for dances, performances, voting, etc.. Here are some details.
“Episode 1110/1110A – After ten weeks of electrifying performances and shocking outcomes, Jennifer Grey & Derek Hough, Kyle Massey & Lacey Schwimmer and Bristol Palin & Mark Ballas have earned the right for a chance to be crowned champions of “Dancing with the Stars.” Eleven of this season’s couples will also return to the ballroom to dance one more time. The three finalists will have their last opportunity to impress the judges and viewers on two final nights of competition, MONDAY, NOV. 22 (8:00-9:11 p.m., ET), and concluding on the Season Finale, TUESDAY, NOV. 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
In the final performance show on MONDAY, NOV. 22 (8:00-9:11 p.m., ET), each of the couples will compete in two dances. In an effort to show their improvement over the course of the season, all three couples will dance for redemption by re-choreographing and doing a previously performed dance chosen by the judges with new music for a better score. Each couple will also perform the unpredictable and always entertaining no rules Freestyle dance.
In the two-hour Season Finale on TUESDAY, NOV. 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET), the thrill of the competition will continue as the three finalists perform their personal favorite ballroom dance of the season and will be ranked by the judges. In the final element of the competition on Tuesday, each of the couples will do an “Instant Dance” — in which they will have to master the Cha Cha Cha to music they’ve been given for the first time after the show’s broadcast has begun.
Also on Tuesday’s spectacular Season Finale, multi-platinum, award-winning recording star Christina Aguilera will perform two songs. Aguilera’s performance will feature a number from her show-stopping new film, “Burlesque,” which will be released by Screen Gems, a division of Sony Pictures, on November 24. The soundtrack to “Burlesque” will be released on November 22nd on RCA Records and features numerous original songs co-written and performed by Aguilera, as well as production by Tricky Stewart and Linda Perry and songwriting by Claude Kelly, Tricky Stewart and Sia. “Burlesque” also includes remakes/covers of classic songs such as Etta James’ “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” and “Tough Lover” and Mae West’s “A Guy What Takes His Time.” Aguilera will also perform her breathtaking Grammy Award-winning single, “Beautiful.”
Aguilera has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, achieved four #1 singles on the Billboard hot 100 chart and has won five Grammy Awards, as well as three top five albums in the United States. She has collaborated with other legendary artists including Herbie Hancock, Andrea Bocelli, Tony Bennett, Elton John and The Rolling Stones. This month she will appear in her first feature film, “Burlesque,” opposite Cher and Stanley Tucci. Earlier this year, she launched her new album, “Bionic,” which featured collaborations from artists such as Sia, Le Tigre and Ladytron, as well as producers Tricky Stewart and Hill/Switch.
All of the frenzy and anticipation will lead up to the moment we’ve all been waiting for when the couples’ scores from the judges will be combined with the audience votes to determine who among the three finalists will win reign as champion of “Dancing with the Stars” and take home the coveted mirror ball trophy.
In other news, Brooke Burke was interviewed on USA Today. Here are some of her thoughts on this week’s show and predictions for what’s to come.
Brooke Burke, co-host of Dancing With The Stars, knows Bristol Palin has been a lightning rod for controversy this season on the show.
“A lot of people are questioning whether she deserves to be there,” Brooke said today in a phone chat from New York.
“I think she deserves to be there. America makes up for half of the scores. And they are voting for her. A lot of people who are criticizing, don’t vote at all. This is a show you have to participate in and you have to let your voice be heard.”
Adds Brooke, “I think she has grown the most. And I think America has chosen to put her there.”
As for what will happen on Tuesday’s finale: “You can assume nothing on a show like this.”
Speaking of our co-hosts, here is Tom Bergeron on “Chelsea Lately” this week. He’s a hoot as always. She is too.
Derek was also interviewed by Hollywire. Thanks to Heidi and Pure Derek Hough for this fun video. The backdrop for this is so cool with Hollywood getting ready for Christmas. Derek is a class act as always.
And here is Brandy and Maks on “The View” yesterday. Joy Behar cracks me up trying get Maks to admit it’s the Tea Partiers that kept Bristol in the competiton. Anyway, they are interviewed a little backstage and then they dance their beautiful Argentine Tango again.
Speaking of Brandy and Maks, there is an on-line Petition out there to bring them back to show. Wouldn’t it be interesting to actually see the producers consider the idea? But, I really doubt it will happen. This isn’t the first unfair elimination and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I do hope this will make them re-vamp their voting systems somehow as many of you have expressed.
Maks also called in to The TV Insiders Podcast on Popwatch to discuss not making the finals. He said, “This is bulls—”. He also has some not so nice words for Carrie Ann and whether he was, in fact, wearing a thong during his week 8 waltz. lol He also talks about Bristol and the “Palism” voting.
Maks also started his own personal blog (seperate from TV Guide) so he could really air out some things and the reaction he’s seen and received. Here is a take. But, be sure to read more at the link.
But as this is my blog, my choice of topic and my own opinions, so I do want to address some of the issues that have come up as relates to Brandy & I on various forums, discussions, and even some odd comments I received from a few gloating about last night’s results….
1. My Arrogance- I am pretty passionate and also pretty blunt. I think my passion and straight response gets sometimes mistaken for arrogance. I may be strong in my belief. Maybe that is tough for some people. But I have learned to live a life in black and white, with little shades of gray. Like in dancing, there is a right way and a wrong way. There is no middle ground. I generally am passionate about perfection and doing things the right way. I give my point of view as I see it. I do not say I am more right than anyone. But it is what I believe. I don’t mean to be rude or abrasive. But my passion drives me and I believe being passionate about your work is important. It is unfortunate if that my passion is mistaken for something negative. My partners, friends and families know where I come from. I feel strongly and I express myself that way but arrogance assumes I think I am better than the rest. I don’t. I am no different than anyone else. I just am strong in my opinion.A. Brandy’s Past- I believe people make mistakes. Look at any of the magazines out there today, everyone from politicians to celebrities, to local people in your community have made mistakes. I am not sure what the right punishment is for people who make mistakes. I come from a very tough household. We try to be the best in all that we do. All of my life I have striven, trained, and worked my a$$ off to be where I am. But do you think I have never made a mistake in my life? I am sure this won’t shock anyone. I have made plenty. Some punishments I’ve suffered are worse than others. But ultimately, I have learned that the worst punishment comes from myself, from within. So one thing I learned to do is I live and I learn. And at some point, I have to move on from the past. It is unhealthy for anyone to live in the past. And it is unhealthy for others to punish you constantly for past mistakes.
So I am addressing this to tell everyone, leave the past in the past. I hope you all see what I see in Brandy today. She is a big hearted, gracious, amazing person. She has heart. She is a sweetheart. And I have nothing but love for her. She will remain a great friend to me. I am behind her 110% in all of her endeavors today and in future.
B. My attitude/Carrie Ann/Judges- If my attitude jeopardized Brandy, then I apologize for that and I feel just terrible for Brandy. The show shouldn’t be about what I think or feel or how I teach or choreograph. This show should be about the celebrity contestants that put a tremendous amount of effort into working to learn how to dance and perform in dancesport. My argument with Carrie Ann was about that. Don’t judge Brandy for my choreography or how I trained her. That is not Brandy’s fault. Ultimately, she should have been judged for her technique, effort, and her dancing in comparison to the others.
Did Brandy do a good job? She did absolutely incredible every week. I think she overcame her own issues and insecurities each time she came out onto the dance floor. She came with composure, no drama, no tears. She came to compete. I couldn’t ask for anything more than that from my partner. She did wonderful.
Sometimes the viewers didn’t see the other side. The struggle, the worry, the emotions she did go through just like the other celebrities on there. That is the magic of video editing and I can’t control what they choose to show you. I’ve mentioned that before as well.
But I apologize to Brandy, if my passion about putting the focus where it belonged caused more an issue than my real intent. Ultimately, I am a choreographer, an instructor, and her partner. I wholeheartedly wanted to make it to the finals because Brandy, in my opinion, truly deserved to be there. If this competition were about me, I would still be competing against dancers of equal skill. But I was not competing. Brandy was. And she was an amazing partner and dancer and in my opinion, the best this season.
What can I say but that I am beyond disappointed that her talent, her skill, her improvement, her technique seemed to be overlooked or undervalued in comparison to other competitors each week. Maybe some of you will disagree. Maybe some of you feel good about certain celebrities over others. That is not what I, as her partner and coach, am concerned with. I pushed her to bring the best she could each week. I was hard on her. I trained with her daily about her movement, her technique, her footwork, her body posture. It was tough, frustrating, hard, a work out. And I pushed for her to give me perfection. She did, btw. I just wish this is where the focus should have remained with the voters.
C. Brandy’s Response That Night- For the record, this is my job. I have been here a few seasons now. It does not affect me the same as my partners. But no one should begrudge anyone the right to their own personal reaction and processing as best as they can. Was Brandy in shock when the results were announced? Yes. Did she assume she would be there in the finals as some have suggested? No. We were both nervous. But she really wanted and hoped to get a shot in the finals. The reality of that not happening had to sink in. Losing a competition for any one is tough. But losing so publicly with the intense focus on you is extremely nerve racking. Brandy had a tough moment. But who wouldn’t have in her shoes. Give her a break.
Before this week, I have mentioned a few times that behind the stage many of the celebrities from this and past seasons have taken being voted off badly behind stage. That is the truth. And maybe I’m one of those guys that sees black and white and feels terrible to see them go through it, regardless if they are my partner or not. I hate to see someone hurt. And I would stick up for anyone who feels bad after a show and reading the posts about them. I will always also try to protect and defend my friends and those I care about from getting hurt, too. Wouldn’t you?
D. Voting Issues- This season more than others I heard rumblings of issue with voting and the phone lines. Unfortunately, that is not something I control or am knowledgeable about. If there were phone issues, let ABC.com know. I hope that no foul play existed. I assume it didn’t. All I can say is I hope the DWTS producers look at that for future shows. But at this point, the results are in. It is what it is. And I will look forward, not backwards.
E. Politics- I am a dancer. I leave politics to the politicians who are good with using media and propaganda to their advantage. It shouldn’t be on the dance floor. I am simply a dancer, an instructor, and an entertainer. I hope you enjoyed our dances each week. That ultimately was our goal.
F. Next season & Me- I can’t speak to next season. All I will say is that I have had an amazing 9 seasons. It has been an amazing experience, challenging, fun and rewarding. I have met and worked with amazing people. I appreciate the opportunity to have been on the show and have no regrets with regard to participating.
And here are a couple of takes from Maks at his blog at TV Guide. Be sure to read the link for more.
I want my fans to understand me and not to be angry at the show. I don’t want to say I’m the most just and most fair person, but I think I’ve matured in a way where I realize what good is anger going to do for anyone? I want everyone to know that I had a blast this season with Brandy. People’s perception of Brandy that she’s a diva couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve never met anyone who smiles more, she never complained. Given everything she’s overcome in her life, she’s become such a positive person. She gave the show her all and she was upset like a serious athlete who’s preparing for something only to come up short.
What people don’t know is that I had a complete mental breakdown last Thursday and I had zero clue about how to do the Argentine tango. Nothing was coming to me. Brandy helped me tremendously many weeks, but this week especially. I was having nightmares. We came in Friday and I spoke to Tony and he said look on YouTube for inspiration. I watched some videos and only saw blurs. I told Brandy, “Let’s take a different approach. Let me not teach you, but let’s just dance. Where do you want to start?” She said the stage. I said we can use the steps. Next thing you knew, we started dancing. It was a dance that we truly choreographed together. And what do you know? We got a 30. Brandy has been an amazing partner and I will truly never understand the amount of hate that permeates the Internet. What is with all the negativity? People pass judgment so fast without knowing anything about anybody. I feel so bad for these people who have nothing better to do in their lives than to spend time complaining about me. Why would you waste time and energy on someone and something you apparently don’t like?
As for the finale, we will be there Tuesday along with everyone else. We will not be doing a freestyle despite Bruno’s request. I would never put Brandy through that. When you get eliminated, you completely exhale and your body goes into shutdown mode. Your muscles were in such tension and you’re on autopilot during the season that when you get eliminated, you start feeling everything. I’m very proud of everything Brandy’s accomplished. There’s no reason for her to train to do a freestyle.
Everyone’s asking me about next season. All I can say right now is, “We’ll see.” Like I said, I love the show and I don’t want to see it fail. I love the fact it promotes dancing. The show is not perfect, but nothing is. I’m not going to go on a strike. I’m never not going to dance cha-cha or anything. Honestly, there’s not hate on the planet to make me stop believe what I believe. No votes are going to stop me from dancing. If they ask me back and the situation is permitting and it’s right for me and my family, then absolutely. I may not be driven in the same way as I was this season or in previous seasons, but maybe that will be a good thing. But as of right now, the answer is I don’t know. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
I am back home in New York right now and couldn’t be happier! After such a grueling season, I feel recharged and ready to restart. I saw my family, I saw Sleep, I spent time with my mom. It’s been fantastic. Now it’s back to business. We signed Tony to our company as partners and we’re going to take Dance with Me outside the tri-state area. Tony’s a phenomenal teacher. He’s had success running past studios. We’re looking to open studios in L.A., Vegas, and hopefully a town near you where you are. My brother is doing amazing. He just finished fifth in the world championships this past weekend in a higher category. He’s going for his unprecedented third title. As for my top-secret show, It’s being put together right now. It’s a slow process because of my commitments to other things. When it does come into fruition, you’ll be the first to know.
Finally, I just want to say a huge thank you to all of you — our fans — for everything this season and beyond. We feel a lot of love. Thank you for your humongous support during the tough times and the good times this season. It has truly meant a lot to both of us. It’s something that I will cherish. No hard feelings, no bad feelings for anything. It’s all only part of reinforcing what I do. I feel the love. I took criticism. We all have flaws. I’m certainly no exception. I’m just going to try to continue to improve as a person, a teacher, a dancer, a son, a brother and a friend. Follow me on Twitter and my website to see what we’re doing and what I’m doing.
Lastly, here is Kyle and Lacey being interviewed on E Online. They hope to bribe everyone into voting for them with PIZZA! lol
Ok, that is it for this Friday. Maybe more later!! Thanks for reading and being the awesome fans that you are to this site!!!xxx

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Vogue! Okay if I understand the proceedings on Monday and Tuesday correctly, that means that the judges will be the only ones scoring the 3rd and 4th dances, right? So they will really have more control over the results than ever before??? Isn’t this the first time that there are 2 dances to judge on the final night? I wonder if this was in place before this week’s results, or if this is an attempt to get control back of the voting. What do you think??
Maks’ blog post is typical of him. He can’t let go of the fact that he and his partner lost, and that he’s partly responsible for their performances and how they are judged. Interesting, too, that he urges people to vote for Kyle, because Brandy said the trophy should go to the “best” dancer. Wouldn’t that be Jennifer then?
Meggie, that’s the way I’m understanding it too. I hope with the judges scoring the last dances on Tuesday, they can get some control over this competiton and the truly “best” dancer will win. But, hey, they’ve also judged really unfairly this season and gave people undeserving scores while not giving others the score they deserved. I think I’m going to go into it thinking next week shows will be just as whacked as the whole season so I don’t get my hopes up. lol
Great post Vogue! Hows yo Friday goin?
Am I the only one thats really excited/scared of the Schmurgles freestyle? LOL
You’re welcome and thanks. How’s your Friday? Mine is going good. Relaxing and contemplating decorating for Christmas. lol
And I can’t wait to see Kyle and Lacey’s free style too. No doubt she sill come up with something very “out there” and creative. I’ve really come to respect her and her choreography this year in a Lady Gaga kind of way. At the beginning of the Season, I was griping with her picked to be on the show. I take it all back. lol
LOL, Vogue! And that interview with Tom is awesome! He was so funny without being offensive or anything, Unlike Carrie Ann who just blurts out whatever she wants and acts like shes high or something, and im almost beggining to wonder if the judges ” atleast Carrie Ann ” really is on happy gas. Or Crack.
LOL Zach. I’m in agreement about Carrie Ann. She was just getting too much into Lopez making fun of Bristol for my liking in her interview with him. I’m with Maks in the Popwatch/EW video above. “Screw Carrie Ann”. lol Thank goodness Tom isn’t like that.
Meggie, the judges were the only ones scoring the 3rd and 4th dances last season as well. The difference is that only Nicole and Evan performed the 4th dance for scores. This time, all 3 finalists will.
Tom, and Brooke for that matter are SO awesome in interviews and gosh, TOM hes so funny! And he doesnt have to use Bristol’s weight ” Like George Lopez and many others “or whatever to be funny or anybody, His jokes are hillarious but not at others expense.
Sounds like the format of this finale is going to be pretty similar to last seasons, with the exception of the instant choreo dance. They must’ve really liked the way the instant choreography round turned out, if they’re pulling it out again. And I’m with you, Zach – I’m really excited to see what Lacey pulls out for their freestyle this time. I felt a little let down by the freestyle she did with Lance, but I’m hoping the fact that Kyle is a better dancer than Lance (and with a much bigger personality) is going to make this freestyle explosive! I think Derek & Jen will undoubtedly fare well, despite her inability to do lifts – Derek has proven time and again that he’s able to work around almost any issue. Not sure what to think about Bristol & Mark – I think someone tweeted that they were spotted trying to find a copy of Chicago on DVD…if they’re going with a Chicago-themed freestyle, I think they may run the risk of being cliche, since it’s already been done (Evan & Anna’s quickstep to the “Hot Honey Rag” last season, and I want to say there was another song from Chicago that’s been used before). It could be doomed like Dmitry & Mya’s freestyle.
As for the redemption dances, I have a feeling Jen & Derek will probably redo their paso doble, Kyle & Lacey will do their foxtrot, and Bristol & Mark…maybe their foxtrot, too? It’s really hard to tell with those two, since the majority of their routines were just not that great to begin with. I just remember them really getting raked hard across the coals for that particular dance. Favorite dances? I’m thinking Jen & Derek will probably redo their A. tango (although if they go the sentimental route, maybe their Viennese waltz), Kyle & Lacey their cha-cha or jive, and Bristol & Mark…probably tango or quickstep.
Oh and Zach, I meant to respond to you on another thread about my vacay
Thanks for asking, I did have a good time – although I was disappointed that it wasn’t particularly warm in AZ…only about 65 the whole time I was there. And while I didn’t have any team Kurtanna sightings (:-(), we did actually hear that Kurt’s wife had been shopping in one of the same stores we had been in earlier in the day! Close enough, I guess
But it’s great to be back!
Tom is awesome. I have been followed him since the 80′s when he had a local talk show in the Boston market (he is from Haverhill MA). He was good then and has only gotten better. He has worked hard to get where he is…now if he could only get that Emmy….
My problem with Maksim is that what he says on blog seems very right to me. But, at the same time, the way he does the things he says is not. hehehe
And I’m still don’t understand why he really wants we buy the fact that the judges have to score only the celebrity. Pro and celebrity make a couple. Choreography need to be judged too… IMO.
Well guys, I have to thank you all, Vogue, Heidi, John, and everybody from PureDwtS for your work. This was a great season because of you all too.
I’m already addicted to this site (Who knew?) LOL =]
Glad you had a good time, Courtney! :d
Oh i meant
I agreed, disagreed, re-agreed… that’s what I like this place everybody is as same addicted to DwtS as I am.
mmc, thanks! So I wonder if that change is to be able to judge Bristol, too, and have more control on the final outcome.
This is an awesome post/article! Tom is a hoot and I totally agree w Carlie. Maks is kinda being a sore loser and the section F of his blog really annoyed me. It seems like he wants to leave the show or does not want to participate next season which is fine since he really seemed to tick of peo;le this season. There are male pros that can take his place (jonathan, damien, dmytry).
Seeing Juliane’s interview with Derek makes me wish that she returned the show even more. She is a great singer and from what I have seen in her scenes from “Burlesque” she is not too bad of an actress but I think that if she came back the ratings could go even higher.
4 dances then eliminate Bristol. I like it.
Just put her out there make her dance every dance. Show the world that mediocrity shouldn’t win titles. IMHO everytime she dances it’s another win for better dancers. So it’s crunch time for the judges to grow a pair and stop cowtowing to controversy.
Jen and Derek
As far as the favorite dance goes, that’s a tricky one. VWaltz has the sentiment, but being first week it only got a 24. Do they dare try it again for a 30? A 6 point bump is rare. Also, this time CA might doc them for that unintentional lift at the end. She knows where to look this time.
It might be a better bet to go with either a dance that already got a 30 – of those The Fabulous Rumba definitely needs an encore. They need to reserve the Cha Cha for the insta dance, and the Waltz however gorgeous one of my faves, may not be as wow as needed.
–or they could go back to the Argentine Tango which was a sensation and a 29. I’m leaning toward the AT, because not only was it gorgeous, my personal favorite dance of the season, but Derek and Jen can change it up slightly to fit the regular stage and it will be brand new again. I’d love to see how they will traverse the stairs, and he takes the free leg drag into the middle of the dance floor… just awesome stagecraft. Also this would give the team Jenougher the 30 that dance deserves.
I think for sure their redemption dance has to be the Paso Doble. Well I love it. I think the first one was an off night, and this one will be incredible. Derek put in some exciting moves in the first Paso such as the slide down the leg with Jennifer’s free leg extended, and since I think he tweeted a pic of that move he likes it and will do it for the redemption.
Add a FOURTH dance to the finals for the first time in finals history!!! An insurance policy for Palin perhaps? It’s been well documented all season that Jennifer is injured and frail. Who gains an advantage from a fourth dance? Maybe Kyle, certainly Palin. Say what you want about Carrie Ann but she and even Len have been judging Palin easier and giving her higher than deserved scores all season long. What makes you think they are going to judge Palin as strict as Kyle and Jennifer in the finals? Brooke, Tom, GMA, anyone remotely involved in the show spinning this anyway they can but the producers and ABC are complicit in Palin’s win!
If Palin scores high on the dance floor on Monday the show is over. I don’t think she will. I think the opportunity is there for the better dancers to distance themselves from her because over 4 dances the point spread will be larger, and thus more difficult for her fanbase to make up the difference.
The insta dance is the Cha Cha – Jen just got perfect on that one, Kyle it’s one of his best dances. Not so much for Bristol. She’s definitely #3 on that dance. Hopefully the trend will continue.
This can go any way. With no lifts for Jen, who knows what Derek might come up with, but I’m sure it will be good. I just hope he doesn’t crack under pressure, although he seems much more relaxed than with Nicole last season. Lacey, I fear, will spit out an amazing freestyle tailored to Kyle’s strengths, and like DOnny Osmond, it will be all personality, no dancing and thus will win. Something tells me Mark might go the Shark route and do something similar that Bristol could actually execute well. I don’t know, I am really pulling for Jenougher. Let’s do this!!!!
This is will be interesting to watch where Bristol will place. I’d love Kyle to win the MBT because he was fun to watch but I think it will go to Jennifer Grey.
As for Maks, I agree with most of the things he said. It is what it is.
Four dances for Bristol to learn in six days! I think it will bring her down. She has to work too hard on each dance to get where she is now, and she sure has to step it up next week with the judges. I remember the year Marie was in the finals, and as someone already said, he really laid down the law that the dances had to be good at that stage. No, I don’t think she can do it. I think the other two can though.
The spin ABC PR is trying to put on this with Brooke, Tom and others is sickening! No Brooke American did NOT choose to put Palin there. We DO vote, or at least try to. We are the ones who realized you cannot get through on the phone lines at all, or the online system until after 3 in the morning. Your voting process was hijacked and you did nothing about it. Palin may have improved but she is still no where near the dancer that any finalist has ever been before in the 11 seasons of the show. Don’t blame us for unequal judging…had the judges been as tough on Palin as they were on Audrina, Palin would not have made it past week 2! And let’s not forget the constant and ongoing Palin pandering on GMA! There has been a Palin on GMA 4 out of 6 mornings every week since DWTS began! Where has the name recognition efforts for other dancers been during that time? And the frosting on the cake is the new 4th dance in the finals! First time ever right? Jennifer has problems with stamina so they add more dancing! Another really “Fair and Balanced” move! Sorry that’s Fox. What ABC is on its way to becoming…Fox Jr.!
@Nathan, I just don’t see Bristol doing anything
Shark related. Her dancing is slow, when she tries speed she gets caught up in the steps and over thinks. If Mark tries a hip hop with her I just don’t see it working well, especially when there’s little aptitude for it.
Kyle on the other hand “might’ pull it off, but his moonwalks weren’t that good on that Samba, the lifts on the Argentine Tango very messy. I just think both of them have limited ability so definitely Lacey will have to go for the crazy entertainer aspect of Kyle to pull out the win.
No matter how many dances are scored, the judges still only count for 50 percent. What having FOUR dances does is increase overall score and it could very well (it should) increase the margin between Bristol and Jennifer and Kyle. Say that Bristol gets all 9s and Jennifer gets all 10s – normally, that would be a 12 point margin between them, which is pretty good. I think however, that you will see some 8s in there for Bristol and maybe some 9s for Jennifer – the margin could be higher or lower.
Also, the relay dance is typically done and last season they were given either an 8, a 9 or a 10, depending on how they finished – it kinda sounds like they’re going to give a full score for a Insta-dance instead – that’s a good thing. Last season they also did two dances on Monday and two dances on Tuesday – same as last season. What is DIFFERENT, is that ALL four dances will be done before anyone is eliminated – also a relatively good thing, I think. Every little bit helps, anyway. As long as Jennifer and Kyle do four good dances, that is.
@steed there were 4 dances last year. It’s just that this year everyone dances all 4 dances over the two nights before an elimination. Last time Erin was eliminated before doing the final dance.
Paula – There were 4 dances in the finale last season: the freestyle, the redemption dance, the favorite dance, and then an additional dance for the final 2. This isn’t the first time. And Meggie, I agree with you – I think this is going to hinder Bristol more than it will help her. She’s proven than she tends to forget her choreography in the heat of the moment – what makes anyone think that her having MORE choreography to remember is somehow going to help her? Haha. I also think you make a really good point about Marie too – they really came down hard on her in the finale and didn’t hold any punches. To date, she still has the lowest-scoring freestyle in DWTS history – 22 points. Plus she has something in common with Bristol: an extremely strong, specfic voting block – Mormons/Osmond fans. I think her demographic far outnumbers the Tea Party republicans, and Marie’s supporters still couldn’t outvote both Julianne & Helio AND Maks & Mel. If Jen and/or Kyle are pulling out perfect 30′s (which is a distinct possibility for them, while I don’t see Bristol doing it), a score like 22 or even 24 is going to be that much more crippling to her. Add to that the fact that people are royally pissed that she made it to the finals, and are going to vote like hell to spite her – I think she’s got a lot to overcome.
I’m beginning to feel more and more optimistic about Monday…the more I think about it, the more I don’t see Bristol pulling this off, regardless of how hard her fans are voting. I’ve always said that, with the exception of season 1 (which felt like a completely different show anyway), the right person has always won each season – they’ve always been a combination of both skill and showmanship, and have generally been well-received by the public. I think the system will work again this time…as long as people vote. Not trying to soapbox, kids, but seriously – if you don’t want Bristol to win, YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR JEN OR KYLE. If you really want to get strategic about it, vote for whoever gets the higher score – it’ll give them an extra leg up on Bristol. Sitting and complaining and not voting is not going to prevent her from winning. Take back the show before it’s too late!
They are setting the stage in case Bristol wins, or for her to win, depending on your perspective:
“Jennifer Grey & Derek Hough, Kyle Massey & Lacey Schwimmer and Bristol Palin & Mark Ballas have earned the right for a chance to be crowned champions of “Dancing with the Stars.”
And:
“each of the couples will compete in two dances. In an effort to show their improvement over the course of the season, all three couples will dance for redemption by re-choreographing and doing a previously performed dance chosen by the judges with new music for a better score.”
“Most improved” is the catch-phrase here. I agree with Steed – this is spin. And they are not addressing the folks who have voted and are outraged, like me.
I think you’re reading a little too far into it, Laurie. They said the same thing about the redemption dance last year – it was an effort to “show improvement”. Is there really any other way to word that?
@Laurie, I welcome Derek and Jennifer and the Paso Doble as their redemption dance. If they get a 30 and that’s definitely in the realm of possibility that will show a 10 point improvement over their first attempt. That will, for me show some of the greatest improvement on the show. And that is not unheard of. Season 4 Apolo Ohno went from a 21 to a 29 on his Cha Cha Cha, and Mario Lopez in season 3 got a 6 from Len at his first try at the Tango. Second try the judges gave him a perfect score.
However, both these guys dances with flair and finesse. Bristol is merely marking out there, not dancing from the heart.
Paula, they had four dances last season as well. And, with four dances, you don’t have to give her all 8′s for there to be a nice margin. But with 4 dances – and the extreme criticism the show is getting, I expect to see 8′s. Didn’t Erin get 8′s in the final last season?
If they continue to inflate Bristol’s scores and she wins?? Well, I’ve been giving this some thought too. The way the internet and the public is reacting to Bristol being in the final – and pretty STRONGLY – I will probably feel sorry for both her and Mark if they do win. It is pretty widely assumed by the media that she’s there due to some rabid tea party voters (and not a combination of that and crappy judges scoring) so neither is likely to get a lot of credit for any real dancing they do. And this will be the third time that Mark wins yet has a caveat to the win – “Oh, you won because of Kristi.” or “Oh, you won because of Shawn.” will now be, “Oh you won because of the Tea Party.” Whether it’s strictly true or not doesn’t matter. It could be ugly.
Thing about Maks is – I often agree with what he says, in theory. It’s often his presentation of his thoughts that I take issue with.
Yeah, they said the same thing last year about the redemption dance – no difference there. Frankly, I read a lot of the press as the people involved being on the defensive – I doubt very much that they truly want Bristol to win. They might be seeing the long view of her winning, finally. It won’t be good.
Erin and Evan both got 8′s in the final.
Thanks for the info on the structure of the finals. It does seem that having all three finalists do both dances on Tuesday is intended to prevent either Kyle or Jennifer not making it to the final two and to give the judges more control over the winner. Isn’t this the first time they haven’t whittled it down to a final two?
I guess I’m just not seeing Bristol winning. But if she does – what’s another season that’s analogous? I’m not talking about the best dancer not winning, I’m asking about a middling dancer taking the trophy.
Jay – the only season I can think of that’s even remotely analogous to this one (if Bristol wins) is season 1…Kelly Monaco started out as the worst dancer there, improved slightly, but somehow gained popularity as the show went on and managed to oust the consistent, season-long leaderboard topper – John O’Hurley. I can’t think of any other season where someone started out so weak and managed to claw their way to the top…I guess if Bristol finishes 3rd, you could liken it to season 5 (when Marie Osmond made it to the finale despite not being stellar) or season 9, when Kelly got 3rd…but I think even Kelly & Marie managed to improve much more than Bristol has. Idk…like I said above, the more I think about it, the more I just don’t see it happening. Too many pissed off people, too much talent to overcome, and too much worry from producers concerned about ratings.
The judges are ranking their favorite dance on Tuesday. Jennifer and Derek should do their argentine tango. It was the best dance of the season and neither Bristol or Kyle can touch them there. It has performance and technique. It gives them a 30 and gives them. Their first dance is sentimental but Carrie Ann can dock them for their unintentional lift. Kyle will bring it in the freestyle. Jennifer and Derek can match Kyle though with their dancing and performance. But if the judges score Bristol and Kyle accordingly in their redemption dance, Jennifer should still have the lead. No matter the scores, Bristol is the wild card. This season, being the favorite and in the leader board, is the underdog.
The “Bring Brandy Back” petition is about as ridiculous as the constant cries of “Brandy was VOTED OFF the show instead of Bristol!” Shouldn’t people who don’t even watch the show realize by now that no one is actually voted off, they just don’t get enough votes to stay on?
Maybe I should stop reading random tweets and comments on Facebook.
Courtney, you are right. I guess you can’t word “shows improvement” any other way. It just seems that that is the catch-phrase regarding Bristol whenever anyone is interviewed. But what are they going to say? “It’s a miracle she’s still here”? or “I don’t know how in the hell she’s managed to knock off better dancers”? ‘She’s shown a lot of improvement over the season’ is safe and polite.
I just hope the judging is fair and consistent.
As it says in the press release, the favorite dance is being ranked by the judges. 10, 9, 8.
If those two, who are MUCH better dancers (Erin and Evan) can get 8′s in the final then Bristol better get some as well. If she doesn’t?? We’ll know there is lots of crack to go around.
So they ARE doing the ranking thing – I must have missed that. Well, I still say that if the judges can give Erin and Evan 8′s on finals then they sure as hell can give them to Bristol – and if they don’t I will smell a rat.
If people vote like crazy and haven’t just given up (which is also alarmingly possible), then I don’t think I see Bristol winning either. They only way she will is if the judges continue to score her on her own personal scale that doesn’t take into consideration that it’s the finale. If they do that – well, you thought that me and Court could be mean before? You ain’t seen NOTHING yet.
Nathan it still seems weird, with you supporting Jennifer! I still associate you with Audrina! Lol, But hey shes gone so ya gotta route for someone
. I also agree that Lacey could pull out an awesome freestyle and win it too.
I just want to say THANK YOU you guys. This is my first season with you and only my third with dwts. Your blog has been pure pleasure and pure fun. Thanks!!!
Heidi – I’m kind of hoping to see 3′s in the final.
Yep, Erin and Evan got 8′s in the finale, which I thought was a bit harsh. An 8 for Bristol would be very generous at this point.
In an interview this week, Erin mentioned that Bristol has been getting higher scores than she did. I didn’t realized that, but she’s right. I think Erin got more 9′s and 10′s than Bristol, but they have gotten pretty similar scores. It did seem like the judge’s scores in general were a bit lower last season, but that’s still crazy.
I can’t wait for the freestyle round! I’d to see what Derek comes up with and I feel that Kyle and Lacey will just go crazy. I hope Bristol messes up and I’d like to see if the judges will give 6′s on the freestyle.
Jody, it’s at times like this when comments like yours are much appreciated.
What is this time?? Well, I finished my part of the cheesecake, I have a headache, and no urge to play with my new super cool iPad.
Carlie, we should be so lucky to see 3s – they’ll only give those to Kyle or Jennifer for one missed step. <—–hyperbole. I know, but I’m tired and I just rewatched the performances and realized that Lacey danced around Kyle more than I realized. :::sigh:::
I wonder what folks think about the number of contestants this season. Right amount? Too many? Likely not too few. Thanks. Now, what are those Vegas odds on whether Maks will be doing Season 12!!!
I like 12, But I still think 14 would be a good number like on SCD.
Zach, please don’t say the ‘A’ word! I still cry! LOL. Just kidding. Geez, every time I think about Audrina’s fowl elimination, I immediately think “What a horrible season”.
Lacey really danced around Kyle a lot. Bristol is getting a lot of blame for Brandy’s elimination but Kyle also outlasted Brandy. The judges have always ignored his technique and loved his personality. Kyle got 10s for not really dancing that great. He is going to be overscored Monday because he is a showman.
wiki says jen goes paso and bristol jive on judges choice. lacey twitted foxtrot.
Carlos that would make sense because those were deffiantly all their worst dances. Ooooh sorry, Nathan…Ill avoid the ” A ” word from now on!
Least shes coming back tuesday. :d
Well, John, I’d rather someone be overscored for personality than being overscored while having NONE. Kyle may lack technique (and he certainly does) but Bristol usually has none. And frankly, the last week of interviews what I have seen of her personality I haven’t liked AT ALL. Way too much like her momma.
I like what Jennifer and Derek had to say in this interview with EXTRA. I wish I had seen some excitement from Bristol though. I know it’s been hard on her, but IT”S THE FINALS. LOL

I feel for Bristol. What a mess to be in. I’m not sure how I would do in interviews when the public and others are attacking my dancing and the voting, but she’s only just turned 20, and I’d say she’s doing okay in the media. She’s just a kid, and it really is like “bullying” in a way, some of the things that are being said. It’s really the judges and the public who have made this a mess for her. If Bristol had gone home in week 2 or 3 , I think she would have bowed out graciously. What do you want her to do now? She is just trying to stand up for herself.
Some people are getting a little crazy about this season as you can see here.

@Meggie – I’m beginning to think you and I are kindred spirits
I agree that life is probably really sucktastic for both Bristol & Mark right now – they’re there because of OTHER people voting, and quite frankly I don’t think either of them expected (or wanted) to be around this long – I found it very telling that Mark all of a sudden cancelled a bunch of his future acoustic performances at Mint last week. I’m thinking he was counting on being voted out much sooner, and that’s why he booked the gigs – and the way he talks, I think he’s much more invested in his music career at this point than his dancing. And Bristol really does seem to miss her son – I can’t fault her for that. I don’t necessarily think they’re handling the pressure and the malice from some of their fans PERFECTLY, but I can’t blame them for some of the less-than-PC stuff they’ve said in response to it – I’ve been known to say some pretty regrettable stuff when I feel attacked. Again, I reiterate – I hope for EVERYONE’S sake that they don’t win, because then things will REEEEEEALLLLLY get ugly
Heidi did you mean Bristol has no technique? Cause that aint true. At all.
Sorry, Zach, my comment was poorly worded – I meant she has no personality. AT. ALL. And frankly, her technique is not as good as what the DWTS apologists (aka Conrad) is trying to make out. Watch her waltz again and watch her FEET. Yeah, her Paso was fine, but that was the semi-final – both dances should have been more than “fine.”
Oh im sorry Heidi, I missunderstood. I find her footwork in both dances to be pretty darn good, her personality is just shy but I actually think she has opened up ALOT since say week 1. I just still have a HUGE cruch on her! I for real cant watch her Quickstep w/o start giggleing like a lovesick nerd.
So what they say is true, Zach – Love IS blind! You’re crush is very cute!
I agree with Meggie (#60) and Courtney (#62). Bristol is pretty much in a “Danged if you do, danged if you don’t” situation.
I hope that this is all being overblown a bit — that after Tuesday night, we’ll all be talking about how it went for Bristol in the same way it went for Marie Osmond. She overstayed her welcome, but couldn’t do any better than 3rd (and yes, it should’ve been more like 7th or 8th).
