DWTS Season 11, The Finale – Dancing by the Numbers (Sorta)
I say sorta because we only have half the judges scores at this point.
Well it’s the last one for the year. And I can’t say I’m all that upset about it, although I did enjoy last night much more than I thought I would.
Regardless of what happens tonight, I think the actual winners are Jennifer and Derek, followed closely by Kyle and Lacey with Bristol and Mark a distant third. Will that be the outcome?? Well, it’s still hard to say. As I’ve been preaching all along, Bristol hasn’t needed huge percentages in order to stay. We’ve yet to get a real feel for the size of her fanbase. Her biggest margin she’s had to overcome was 1.93% and I can tell you right now that the margin between her and Jennifer going into the show tonight is more than double that. I tend to think that Bristol and Kyle are fighting for second, but we shall see. It could be Kyle and Jennifer fighting for first. Every single poll I’ve seen has Jennifer in first place – but you all know how I feel about internet polls (and Dial Idol). No respect at all.
There is also a possible Bristol backlash to consider – hence the extremely tied up phones and internet until nearly 1 am central time last night. Everyone and their brother was voting. Now, I tend to think that the problems were universal and not limited to any one couple – logic dictates. But again, who knows? Here’s how our contestants rank going into two more dances tonight:
The Judges Scores and Percentages
| Place | Celebrity | Score | Percentage |
| 1. | Jennifer | 60 | 35.71 |
| 2. | Kyle | 56 | 33.33 |
| 3. | Bristol | 52 | 30.95 |
As you can see, Bristol and Kyle both have serious ground to make up – and I can tell you right now that some seriously wacky scores would be required to get significant help from the judges. Jennifer would have to do badly in both dances and Bristol would have to knock it out of the park. So, if there were no more dances, what does Bristol have to do to WIN??
- She would have to get 23,900 more votes per million votes cast to pass Kyle, AND;
- She would have to get 48,000 more votes per million votes cast to pass Jennifer and Win.
Can she do that? I honestly don’t think so, but you just never know. Which group of fans had the most patience PLUS who was the average, everyday, pick up one phone person, voting for?? What about Kyle? What does he have to do with win??
- He needs for Bristol to NOT get the 23,900 more votes per million cast, AND;
- He needs 24,000 more votes per million votes cast than Jennifer to pass her and take the trophy.
I think Kyle’s odds are marginally better than Bristol’s, but I don’t think he’s going to pass Jennifer. Perhaps I’m relying a bit too much on conventional wisdom here and not giving crazy voters enough credit. I dunno. I just do the math – you decide if it’s possible.
As you all also know, there are two more dances (and, hence, two more scores) to consider. And anything can happen there. But let’s take a WILD guess and say that the scoring goes about how it did last night. Jennifer gets two 30s, Kyle gets a 30 and a 28 (one dance is ranked so there’s only one 30 to give out), and Bristol gets a 27 and a 26 (again, rank).
If it goes down like that, there is very little change – Kyle needs a few MORE votes to beat Jennifer, and Bristol needs fewer (44,700). Bristol would also need about 6k fewer votes to beat Kyle into second place (17.8k versus 23.8k).
What happens if the judges throw a wrench into the process and switch Jennifer and Kyle on the ranked Insta-dance (or whichever dance is ranked), but Bristol remains the same? Then Kyle only needs a little less than 15k more votes per million to beat Jennifer.
I can’t imagine them going higher than a 27 for Bristol, but what if?? What if Jennifer maintains her 30, but Bristol gets one too? It sounds utterly ridiculous, but those are our judges after all. If Jennifer get a total of 120 (4×30) for the two nights, Kyle gets a 30 and a 28 in addition to his 56, and Bristol gets a 30 and a 26 in addition to her 52?? For Bristol to win she would need:
- 35,100 (3.51%) more votes per million votes cast to beat Jennifer, AND;
- 17,600 (1.76%) more votes per million votes cast to pass Kyle and Win.
For Kyle to Win he would need for Bristol to NOT get her 17,6k votes and he would need 17.6k more votes per million votes cast than Jennifer.
At the end of the day, I have no clue what is going to happen. Based on those numbers and all kinds of strictly anecdotal evidence, such as Bristol backlash and random polls, I’m going to call it for Jennifer with Kyle second and Bristol taking 3rd. I would not be at ALL surprised to be wrong. Not in the slightest. I’ll tell you what though, if Jennifer can’t win, then I want it to be Kyle. If Bristol wins…well, I’ll be posting a picture of Fonzie (aka DWTS) jumping over a shark. The tipping point where cult of personality matters more (as opposed to being relatively equal) than any kind of talent whatsoever.
What say you??

I can see Henry Winlker now, on skiis, in swim trunks, leather jacket, Fonzie hair. I hope not but I’m laughing at the thought of it. That picture could be in heavy use re all things DWTS…
I would like it be 1 Jennifer 2 Kyle and 3 Bristol doing the distant third. Anecdotally, it seems like it’s possible. For example, on the Bachelorette Ali’s facebook page she declared that she was cheering for Kyle last evening and that brought in over 500 comments. When it was all said and done, the overwhelming support was to Jennifer and Derek, Kyle and Lacey second and Bristol and Mark a distant third. Ali revised her thoughts on twitter after she saw Jen and Dereks freestyle, she said she loved Kyle but figured that freestyle from Jennifer would win it. So that’s just a little interesting sidebar. A lot of those fans are just casual viewers not diehards and it makes you think that could be the trend. But you never know.
Thanks Heidi! I love these numbers posts so much! If Jennifer doesn’t win, I hope it’s Kyle too. What a crazy year it’s been. Just please…let the best dancer win. I hope this show will atleast end on a high note in doing so. We will soon find out.
From what I’ve seen on the internet today, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of support for Jennifer and Derek. I hope all those people voted though! If this were a normal season, I think we could safely assume that Jennifer and Derek will win, but I just don’t know with this show anymore.

We just interviewed Kyle and he is soo sweet!! Vote 4 him! He talks Bristol Palin, DWTS final dance, weight loss, and Thanksgiving plans!
I think Jennifer will win it. I’d rather have Kyle just because he came in the show with no dance experience and I’m always a fan of the underdog winning. Bristol came out of her shell. I didn’t enjoy her dancing but I feel sorry that she’s getting all this negative attention.
Let me say, Heidi, that you regularly (along with your co-horts) knock it out of the park. Another great post in a long line …..
Please just let the best dancer win tonight – I think that should be Jennifer, but I’d be OK with Kyle. Kinda Sorta.
I agree with many of the comments about the negative affect all this is possibly having on getting future celebs to sign on. And I can’t help but think the judging has a lot to do with this mess. Do you suppose that they’re told to be “kind” to certain celebs, or ruthless to others – in order to create more drama or to acquiesce to some agreement they made with the celeb to get them to sign? Is that just the cynic in me coming out? I agree that the producers could give a rat’s tail about who wins or who goes home – they just want enough spice to keep viewers interested.
The judges scores on the British SCD seem to be more in line with reality, but the voting gets pretty whacky over there, too. I love Ann’s spirit, but really …. much much much better dancers have been sent home and she’s back to dance again next week. It’ll be a hoot to watch, I’m sure, but belies the “dancing” in the title of the show.
Thank you again for this great post. It somehow brings comfort to have something relatively objective in a contest that is really mostly subjective. We don’t have long to wait, now. I guess I had a feeling this season was going to be different. First, when Bristol was selected to be on the show I thought, oh, that’s odd. Then the whole Michael Bolton mess happened, and I knew we were really in for a ride. But through it all, I have to believe Jennifer and Derek will take the trophy. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
I know this is OT but I would LOVE to know what Tom was thinking when Bristol said winning would be a big middle finger. The look on his face! And he did not say one word.
Did Len really just score Bristol’s tango higher than Kyle’s? When they broke hold?
Am I missing something?
I’m really not liking Bristol anymore. Lots of people have had haters and handled it better.
I cant believe that the judges gave jennifer and derek 10 when they were stepping on each others feet. The other finalists made no major mistakes. Stepping on your partners feet is a major boo boo. They both stepped on each other in the same series of movements. Boo for the judges for not calling them on this. Is this show rigged or what. If they win I may quit watching because aparently there’s a conspiracy.
Heidi, I’m going to respectfully disagree with your post #11. Bristol is only 19 or 20 years old. All things considered (like death threats? Really? Over a dancing show?), she’s held up pretty well.
But all is as it should be — Jennifer & Derek have the trophy, and Bristol and Mark only managed 3rd place. I was surprised to see Mark tear up, though. Looks like he’s become quite fond of Bristol.
And all is right with the world. Off to the wrap party!
ITA with Sally!
Amen, Sally.
Well im also glad the apocalypse isnt upon us.
Bristol and Mark took third as they should of ” so much for conspiericies ” lol but they were really on fire tonight! As were Jen and Kyle, ofcourse
. I really wanted Audrina to win from the start but im glad Jen did so outrage wouldnt brake out/WWIII
. Ooooooh and im reaaalllllyyyyy lookin forward to the cheesecake this week! Ive been watchin it with my family ” We were busting a gut the whole time ” and my grandmas reaction to The Sitch!!!! PRICELESS!!!!
