Pure DWTS – “Calm Before The Storm” Weekend Media In The News
“You come out and show me a proper dance. I’m fed up, Maks, with shirts coming off.” – Dancing with the Stars judge Len Goodman
Remember that one? LOL I am so missing this show, are you? It’s the “calm before the storm” though. I can feel it.
So, first up in some weekend updates, a reminder to watch “Miss America” Saturday night on ABC. Brooke Burke will be helping to host. Tony Dovolani will be one the judges. He’s going to have his work cut out for him. You can see some of the contestants below presenting themselves on the Las Vegas Strip outside of the Planet Hollywood with Boys To Men as the Master of Ceremony.
Cheryl has been so busy. Along with her “Forever Tango” tour, she’s also offering free dance lessons for local teens at Burke’s Mountain View, California ballroom on Jan. 12th. More details below and a promotional picture of her from Mountainview.patch.com. (are her shoes not cute, or what? 🙂 )
Keep your dance card open for Monday, when “Dancing with the Stars” two-time champion Cheryl Burke and fellow dancers from the hit musical Forever Tango will appear at her Mountain View ballroom. From 6-11:30 p.m. Burke and her troupe will host free dance classes for teenagers from local schools. This fundraiser will benefit “The Dance Club Mountain View,” a program developed by the nonprofit Mountain View Police Activities League and Cheryl Burke Dance Mountain View.
For those of you missing Alec and Edyta like myself (cries, please bring these two back!!), here they are opening the show for the Everett Dance Competition in California last month.
Mark was interviewed by The News Herald this week in promotion for his new album “HurtLoveBox”. He also mentions dancing which you can read on below. Be sure to read the link for the full story and interview.
When asked what dance he would perform to each of his solo songs, Ballas graciously said “Faith” would be a rumba, while “The Way You Work” would be a tango. Welcome to Ballas’s world, where despite his best efforts to get his music career off the ground the reality is his popularity orbit remains steadfastly “Dancing With the Stars”-based.
There’s something about Ballas’ personality that has allowed him to become the go-to professional dancer for contestants with, if not baggage then, interesting pop culture history.
“I try to not pay attention to the media,” Ballas said. “When I meet the person I go in with a clean slate and just meet them and take them for what they really are and who they really are rather than what people perceive and write about them. So I had great partners. I’ve never had one rude or obnoxious.”
Mark also taught a “Master Class” for “Dare to Dance” in Cincinnati, Ohio while he was there this past week. The donations went to help his foundation which helps suicide preventation and mental health awareness.
And just a mention on Paula Abdul’s new show “Live To Dance” for those of you who watched the show this past week and were discussing it in other posts. Apparently the ratings weren’t very good on the second night. This source is calling it a “flop”. 🙁 From Robot Celeb.
On Tuesday night the show debuted to 10.3 million viewers. That is about half the size of the audience that American Idol gets, but still it was a decent number and not a terrible starting place. On Wednesday the show aired the second half of the premiere and finished off the first round of auditions. It also lost about 23% of its audience. Viewership plummeted to around 8 million viewers. It finished fourth in its timeslot behind The People’s Choice Awards, Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU. Worse yet was its collapse in ratings among the much coveted 18-49 year old demographic. Here it dropped about 25% from a 2.4 rating on Tuesday to a 1.8 on Wednesday. Essentially, that means that almost all of their loss in viewers was in the 18-49 age range. Not a good sign.
I would expect it to get worse in coming weeks. In two weeks the show will play head to head with the much anticipated debut of American Idol. That will most likely draw more of her viewers away.
If there is a silver lining to the clouds it is that that Live to Dance is just a short run show scheduled to end in mid-February so the odds are that they won’t cancel her mid-season. No matter how badly things could get they will probably let her finish out the full season. They have already committed much of the money by building her the dome building and finding the contestants. What is left will be pretty cheap in comparison.
I don’t know that this loss is ratings is the announcement of the death of Live to Dance, but it certainly proves one thing for sure. Paula Abdul clearly didn’t have the much of an influence on the success of American Idol.
Ok Dancettes, that is all for now!! Have a super weekend! 😉 xxx
Well, CRAP. I was really hoping LTD would catch on and get renewed for another season (maybe this summer), but if the ratings are as dismal as this source is saying, I don’t think CBS is going to jump at the chance to pick up a 2nd season. What sucks is that the winter hiatus time slot (Jan-Feb) is just a really difficult one to do well in – some regular primetime shows start up with new episodes fairly quickly after the holidays, and the hiatus itself isn’t really long enough for people to get hooked on other shows (like they do in the summer hiatus slot), so I can see why some may not be too inclined to tune in. I remember how poorly Nigel Lythgoe’s Superstars of Dance did in the same winter time slot 2 years ago (although I thought that show just stunk from the get-go). Then again, maybe LTD was doomed from the start, as it seems like everyone is labeling it a “watered-down” SYTYCD. Maybe their “niche” as a dancing show is already covered by SYTYCD & AGT. Oh well – it was fun while it lasted.
That whole interview with Mark about his new album is cracking me up, and I don’t think it’s so much what Mark is saying as it is how the interviewer is interpreting it – how can someone “graciously” say what dance they would do to a certain song? Seems like kind of a neutral statement to me, considering the beat of a song kind of dictates what dances can be done to it…unless he prefaced it with something like “I would be oh-so-humbled to dance a rumba to this song!” Hehe. And the whole bit about his popularity lying in his DWTS fame rather than his music career? Um, DUH. To be quite honest, I kinda wish he’d just stick to the dancing, because some of the music he puts out just kinda makes me cringe…the lyrics are awkward at times, he doesn’t have a super-memorable voice, and on the whole it tends to feel very overproduced. Or is it underproduced? Either way, for me it kinda brings to mind when Paris Hilton tried to break into music – her album wasn’t terrible, per se, but it wasn’t really anything special, either. He’s obviously going to be recognized more for being a two-time champion on the #1 show on currently on TV than he is a mediocre pop rock artist.
I have to admit I’m disappointed in these ratings for LTD. I really enjoyed the dancing/audition shows, but the Wednesday night show – a full hour of the 3 of them kvetching over which 18 to put through to the semi-finals. Jeesh. No thanks …. I tuned out pretty quick. I later learned that there was some actual dancing at the end of the show, but I was gone loooong before that …. they lost me at hello 😉 Don’t get me wrong, I thought the 3 of them made a pretty good team, but a whole hour of them going back and forth and forth and back, shoving photos around on a coffee table? What were you thinking when you put so many of them through last night when you knew you’d be kicking most of them to the curb tonight? Either you’re through, or you’re not – one dance one chance. Yesterday you got 3 gold stars and today, without another performance, you’re going home – I didn’t get it … obviously. I’m hoping the next episode is filled to the brim with terrific dancing – I did see a good bit of that in the auditions.
Hope LTD gets another shot, especially since it went up against the People’s Choice awards Wed night. We watched both LTD episodes for the first time On Demand tonight, and I agree the second episode was much weaker than the first (maybe they are following DWTS’s lead that the second show of the week should be mostly filler ;)). Either way, we will watch the rest of the series–without DWTS or SYTYCD on, it’s one of the few prime time shows I’ll let my kids watch. And they did find a lot of great acts! Am I crazy, or did that super cute young couple of kids (the 9 & 10 yr old) perform on a DWTS results show?
Thanks for the Alec/Edyta clip; I love watching the pro couples dance together, although Jonathan/Anna are my faves.
Congrats to Tony for his spot as a judge on Miss America and MISSISSIPPI FOR THE WIN. Gosh I love hot southern bells lol. Vogue I think/hope your right about the calm before the strom LOL! Btw im back! Hahahaha. Been so busy. I have a huge request on season 12: DITCH THE STUPID MARATHON DANCES! The group dances ” cough ” season 8 60’s preferably, WERE AWESOME! The only good part of the marathon to me is that it gives me a chance to go to the little boys room. 😀 BRING BACK GROUP DANCES!!!! 😀
Courtney, I loved Mark’s dancing much more than his music too. Although his music seems to be getting a little better, I cringe sometimes listening to it and watching him.
And like the rest of you, I hope LTD will get another shot too. I hate the ratings game. So many shows are cancelled before they get a fair chance.
lol Zach, welcome back. It’s good to see you again!! 😉
Mark’s partners do not have a lot of baggage. He has gotten great partners. All were well known and the one who wasn’t, Sabrina, could dance. One who could not dance Bristol had fans. He and his fans have no reasons to complain. He has had it pretty good compared to Louis, Jonathan or Tony. Sabrina, Shawn, Kristi, Melissa Joan Hart are all good partners with good work ethic. Melissa was not the best dancer but she had a good attitude and wanted to do the show. Kim Kardashian, Shannon Doherty and Bristol had reputations but not baggage. Courtney, the interview made me laugh too. Mark’s is a better dancer than musician. It does seem a bit amateurish. Mark is only known because of DWTS. He could not even try to venture off to music and get any attention if not for DWTS.
Mischa Barton is being thrown out as a possible contestant. It could be for attention but she is down on her luck acting wise. Her physique was criticized so dancing would get her back in shape and she danced when she was younger.
Thx Vogue!!! 😀
