DWTS Season 12 Pro Watch! Derek, Maks Out??
Derek is definitely a no-go for Season 12, as Vogue mentioned in her updated post from the other day – and I’ve added video (below) from Access Hollywood to compliment Conrad Greene’s confirmation that he’s taking the season off to film Cobu 3D. As for Maks – I *think* this is still in the rumor stages. It appears from Twitter that a good number of his fans are seriously concerned that he won’t be on this season. Usually, a guy’s fans have their finger on the pulse of what is going on – so is this just fear like Derek fans have had (with good reason it turns out) for the past few seasons? Or is there something to this, maybe because of the Bachelor Ukraine?? Several DWTS watchers say this one is an unknown for the time being. I’ll go with them and say it’s a rumor, for now. I have to say, as much as Maks has the tendency to annoy me, a season sans BOTH Derek and Maks has the potential to be deadly dull. π So Maks, for me – come back. π
The only other pro chatter I have seen to date, other than that mentioned above, is Louis Van Amstel. Good old Louis – always keeping his fans fully informed of what’s going on with him:

Oh man Heidi, I will just be in dire straights if BOTH Maks and Derek aren’t doing the show. I want to know when Maks is coming home(to the U.S.)? I remember him once tweeting that he’d be home at the end of January(if I remember right). My feeling is that he will be back. Yes, he may have a Russian girlfriend (or wife, lol) coming with him. But, that doesn’t mean he can’t still do the show like th other couples do. Anyway, timing is going to be telling here imo. I hope he tweets soon that he is HOME!!!
I hope Maks does this season! As much as I am glad for derek, i don’t think the show could handle a season without both of them.
And I hope Louis is gonna be back (I’m not usually a fan of him but without Derek and possibly Maks, I think the show needs to keep some of its big persoanlity pros around….like Mark, him, Lacey, Kym, Cheryl, Anna, and I hope bring back Karina at some point).
I do not think Derek will be back, look what happened with Julianne. He is going to be hard to replace because he was a great choreographer. I think they should bring in some new young pros, just like when they brought in Julianne, then Mark and Derek, it made the show young again again, they should do the same now.
Vin: “i donβt think the show could handle a season without both of them.’
Good point. Losing not just one but TWO big names is scary for the show’s ratings. Surely, the execs of the show won’t let that happen? But, Maks will have his hands full for whatever his contract obligations are with The Bachelor and his potenital new bride (and in hiding to boot adding to it all?). But, knowing Maks, he’ll handle it all somehow (and has a plan) as he always has with his crazy non-stop schedule of the last few years. Interesting too how his Bachelor story is enfolding out in the U.S. as much as it in the Ukraine. lol
The thing that the producers will miss the most are likely the Emmy nominations that Derek was drawing. For that reason alone I think they’ll try hard to get him back. But I agree with Karla, in a way. I think he MIGHT come back for Season 13 to keep his name out there before the movie is released, but after that?? I don’t think so. I think he might like to do it all, but it’s not realistic.
And I vote “no” on any more SYTYCD people – Chelsie is the only one that seems to have worked out well (IMO). BUT, if they are going to pull from that pool, I’d rather Pasha than Benji Schwimmer – please, god, no.
I agree Pasha would be a good choice, he also has personality. Dmitry was a great dancer, but he did not have that TV personality that you need for this show. I would like to see some unknown pros that have got longevity join.
I love Benji Schwimmer but I agree with you guys. I wasn’t really a Pasha fan though. Maybe Stanislav Savich or Maksim “Max” Kapitannikov (both from SYTYCD and eleimanated way before their time on the show and ballroom dancers) I don’t know why but they stood out to me when they were on the show so maybe the producers have the same thinking lol.
I’m with Heidi. No more SYTYCD people. I have to believe that there are other talented dancers out there aside from the ones who have been on STYTYCD. I’m not a SYTYCD fan and it kind of bugged me when they brought over so many dancers from another show. The only one from that group I like is Chelsie.
I actually get the feeling the show has been moving away from that direction. They added Lacey, Dmitry, and Chelsie during seasons 7 and 8 when they also added non-traditional dance styles (including Lacey’s specialty). For Season 10 they lost those other dance styles and they cut Dmitry and Lacey.
Pasha would be an excellent choice and I would take Pasha and Anya over Dmitry and Lacey in a heartbeat. Pasha and Anya were highly ranked when they competed and they have known Tony, Maks and others for awhile. Pasha in particular showed he has a personality and is a lot of fun. But, this is key, he never overshadowed his partners. He made them look good when dancing ballroom. This is something even some current pros struggle with. But I doubt Pasha or Anya will be available since they are all stars on Sytycd and they have contracts with Fox.
DWTS can still get Emmy nominations from Derek’s dances with Jennifer. That paso and argentine tango are Emmy worthy. No other dances from season 11 stand out as possible Emmy nominees and with Derek out for season 12, his dances with Jennifer maybe the show’s best shots at an Emmy nomination.
I liked Brandy and Mak’s Argentine Tango a lot. That could and in my opinion should get Maks an emmy nomination for sure.
With Derek out this season Maks should come back. Its his chance to win the MBT.
This might be a long shot for an emmy nomination but I hope Tony and Audrina’s waltz, brandy’s tango, or bristol and mark’s paso make the cut for an emmy nomination. (As much as bristol had her basd days and overlasted her welcome (should have been brandy and maks in the final) ) her paso
was great choreography in my opinion. Mark nailed that one for sure.
I hope that Lacey comes back. I agree that she can be a bit hard to swallow at times – but she brings an undeniable life to the show given the right partner. She is a bit of a weak dancer compared to the others but her good choreography is fantastic (she just has some misses, of course). I hope this means that Jonathan will be back please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know there is a lot of good dances from Burn the floor show.
As much as I’d love to see Pasha & Anya as pros on DWTS, I’m fairly certain that Nigel Lythgoe still has them on contract to be all-stars again for the next season of SYTYCD – I don’t think he’d be inclined to share them, even though the seasons of the 2 shows don’t overlap. Beyond those two, I don’t think there’s been anyone else with a big enough personality from SYTYCD to fill any voids left by DWTS pros taking this season (or subsequent seasons) off. And I’d rule out any more borrowing from Burn the Floor, too – it seems to me that they have enough pros on deck that have done at least one season of DWTS (Damian, Dmitry, Anna D., etc.) that they wouldn’t need to really seek out any additional new blood. And as for Benji *shudder*…correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think he actually has any competition ballroom experience…if my memory serves, Lacey made a point of mentioning when she tried out for SYTYCD that she had more titles than Benji due to her experience in competitive Latin. Not that I think we even have to entertain the idea of Benji being taken on as a pro…there’s enough male pros waiting in the wings, and Benji seems pretty occupied with other projects at the moment. One Schwimmer is PLENTY for DWTS.
No Derek this season, that’s a hard one for me to accept. I think some of us have really grown so accustomed to seeing our favorite professionals on DWTS. I know I have. Derek’s really made an impact on the show and will be hard to replace as he brings a certain joy, personality charisma, and flare that’s unique and distinguishes him from others. An innovator and brilliant choreographer!
I’m curious to see who will return this season and if they will bring in new professionals. Hoping they don’t select them from SYTYCD. Most of them are just not at the level of the professionals on DWTS.
I agree with Heidi, with 3 Emmy nominations, I’m sure the Producers will try to get Derek back for Season 13. Keeping his name out there will definitely help to promote his upcoming film.
Wishing him and all the other pros the best and continued success!
It’s pretty unusual, I believe, to see a Emmy nomination for a dance done with one of the celebrities – I think Cheryl had one, and Derek had one, but I think most Emmy nominations come from pro dances. It claims to be a choreography nomination, but it has to also be very well executed. I don’t think we’ll see one for Maks or Tony or Mark…and Derek is likely a long shot (accoustic A. Tango, maybe). It all depends on what other people submit. Depending on what the eligibilty dates are, it’s possible that finale night of Season 10 will also be eligible, since it wasn’t eligble for the last Emmy’s. Well, it either wasn’t eligible or it missed the submittal date for the DVDs – can’t remember.
In any case, it will be Season 11 and Season 12 for the most part, so if there are no worthy dances from S11, there could be one or two from the upcoming season. I wish Derek and Julianne would come back and do a results show dance – maybe whatever they’re working on for Hong Kong. That would be my dream. π
Tony has an Emmy Nomination with Stacy.
Maks I remember saying he submitted a dance with Mel B, but I guess he didn’t get a nomination. Cheryl also submitted a dance with Gilles but it wasn’t eligible, i think.
That was pre-SYTYCD – I would bet money that neither Maks nor Tony will get a nomination for Season 11, unless there’s a pro dance in there somewhere. Especially if Maks didn’t get one with Mel B. I just re-watched that season and Mel had some very good to awesome dances. Problem with SYTYCD is that they are using trained dancers to show off their choreography. They also don’t have the “no lift” rule and can go well outside strict ballroom rules and also do non-ballroom. Hence, they gobble up most of the nominations, along with award shows also using professional dancers. There are only so many available slots.
As for submitting – I just read something recently (maybe in the comments here) that the producers ask ALL of the pros what they want to submitt and they do the submitting for them. Of course they’re going to submit as many as they can because the nominations are good for the show. I can’t imagine why a Cheryl/Gilles dance wouldn’t be eligible, unless it was submitted too late. It’s more likely she just didn’t get a nomination. So with Derek, Cheryl and Tony we have THREE nominations in 11 season of dances including a celebrity (that’s really only 5 Emmy seasons though). How many are there for pro dances?? I know Derek has 2 (one with Julianne and one with Chelsie) and I think Louis has 2. Are there more?
I don’t know why Season 8 wasn’t eligible, maybe because of the dates of the show or something. Louis has only one for season 3 or 4 with his partner.
From what I’ve heard, the producers choose who’s going to submit…and the pros choose which dance to submit.
It makes sense that the producers would choose who would submit, actually. They are likely much more objective – and it gets those who might “forget” or neglect to submit, submitted. That also weeds out over-submitting dances that might not be up to snuff.
Isn’t season 8 the one where Derek and Julianne got nominated for the Design a Dance?? The seasons always fall in line with the eligibility periods, for the most part. Last Emmy season was DWTS season 9 and all of season 10 except for the last two weeks – and those were only ineligble because it’s a live show and they can’t perform them in time to make the DVD submittal date.
I’m pretty sure Julianne and derek got nominated 4 season 7 coz Julianne was dancing with Cody, and it was right after her surgery.
And yes, that’s exactly why S8 wasn’t eligible…I think.
Most of Season 8 should have been eligible the year before last – the seasons fall right in line with the eligibility periods. The eligibility period is a year long every year, so it would have been eligible in one year or another and ONLY the last 2 weeks or so of the even numbered seasons would have problems because of the show being live and the DVD submitals being required a month before the end of the eligibility period.
I did a lot of research on this last time (and it’s surprisingly confusing), trying to figure out which of Derek and Nicole’s dances would make the cut – they had awesome dances the last two weeks. Those dances were *eligible*, but they couldn’t be submitted by the deadline because they are performed live, where as most shows are taped well in advance. The eligibility period refers to “air date” – a show has to have aired before a given date in May. But the DVDs are due at the end of April or early May, so, while the entire season was eligible, there is no way they can get the DVDs in to the Emmy people since the show is live and not taped ahead. So, in a nutshell as I figured it, the first 8 weeks of season 10 could make the submittal date – unfortunately, some of Derek/Nicole’s best dances were in Weeks 9 and 10 so while eligible they were not performed in time to be taped and submitted. I would imagine it was a similar scenario for Season 8 – probably only the last two weeks didn’t make the cut. So, if Cheryl wasn’t nominated it wasn’t because she wasn’t eligible, but because she either just wasn’t nominated, or the dance that she wanted to submit was performed too late to be submitted on time.
Heidi, I’m not sure but I believe Julianne was nominated with Helio in Season 5 for one of their performances.
Did a quick research to verify this on Emmy’s site. Julianne, Tony, Cheryl and Derek were nominated for dances with their celebs. Cheryl was nominated for her Thriller paso and freestyle. Tony for his dance with Stacey. Then Louis got nominated for pro dances. Julianne got a nom for her mambo with Helio. Then Derek and Julianne for their design a dance routine. This past year Derek got a nomination for his routines with Nicole, Joanna and Chelsie and Derek’s paso.
The spring seasons are eligible but until Julianne and Derek got their nominations with celebs, there was a bit of a gap where celeb danced routines were not nominated. Even good celebs like Mel and Kristi did not have any emmy nominated routines. So it is not just about having a good celeb but creativity, interesting choreography.
Sytycd can do more with more talented dancers but it is also the style. The contemporary style is more appealing to the Emmy voters, I think. Though Dmitry got nominated for an argentine tango.
According to this, Derek had 3 nominations for his work, (2 individual, one with Chelsie):
http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/popwrap/watch_the_emmy_nominees_for_outstanding_FmJS3Sla6EAKB6hF0Z78bO
So as Heidi’s said, losing Derek is a BIG disappointment… π But, I wish him the best with his acting career.
Sally, Derek’s two individual nominations were lumped into one, and then he was nominated once with Chelsie and once with Julianne.
I think the show will be terribly dull for me, so they best cast this season very, VERY well. π
As long as derek is back for season 13 it’s all good. This could make the season very interesting as well since any of the pros that haven’t won a mirrorball trophy could win one now and maybe Mark or Cheryl can win a third and match Derek’s record.
I hope Maks does not leave – he makes me laugh with all his “antics” and I think he is the BEST dancer. I also like Louis – he does an unbelievable job with the most “unlikely” to learn to dance.
