Pure DWTS 12 – More on Karina Smirnoff’s Playboy Shoot

In my opinion, this shoot has been tastefully and fashionably done. I just wished they would have arranged it so this issue didn’t come out until this Season was over. Hopefully, this won’t have any effects on the voting and voters will keep Dancing With The Stars and what a person does in their private or business life separate because I think Karina and Ralph are so talented and the tops this year. Be disgusted all you like with this shoot and Karina’s desire to do it, but, please don’t take it out on Ralph, the work he’s putting in, and his Dancing With The Stars experience.

I too worry about this affecting Ralph. Love what she is doing for him and how she is hadling herself. Now I am upset wirh Hines for promoting his business (memorabilia sales) through twitter and his fans there from DWTS. Frankly I am appalled and have lost respect.

The best thing is if Ralph doesn’t GO ALL THE WAY, he is mature enough to accept it. As i asked on other post, did DWTS celebs and pros do as much posturing/campaigning/interviews/appearances/selling in the earlier years?? Thanks.
You must be awaare that he is selling other items as well on that site: prints, helmets, cleats as well and i could find nothing there mentioning his charities. Hines donated from the raffle sales, but i have found nothing to explain the rest.

I just don’t get how someone can be “appalled” and “lose respect for” a celebrity on a reality show who might sometimes (in this case, rarely) pimp out their products on their personal Twitter/Facebook account. I mean they’re all on there for the publicity and exposure, as well as to learn how to dance.
It’s not like he’s bringing it up every 10 seconds while the camera is on him on the show.
Never seen anyone qujte this blatant in the past. I agree they are all there to enhace their careers. Just to mention some Mark, Lacey, Maks, Ralph, Karina, Toni, Kirsty wants to go to Broadway and I could go on. You don’t need to agree with me I merely expressed an opion. And I have used my real name not something that might be prceded by an avatar.
I take it you never watched Heather Mills’s season.
All I’m saying is that Hines seems to be the least “Tweet happy” of this season’s bunch so I was kind of surprised to see someone say that he’s promoting his stuff so much that they’d lose respect for him. Especially when it’s mostly for charity. That’s all.
I don’t know how I feel about selling stuff… and I think you are making a bit of an assumption, ck140. The text you quoted says “…a portion of every sale…”. So, how do you get to “…it’s mostly for charity”? Did it say something about the “portion” that gets donated that you didn’t quote here?

Because I’m not a football fan I hadn’t heard of Hines before it was announced that he would be on the show, but I’ve seen and read quite a few interviews he’s done since he’s been on the show and he seems like the nicest, most selfless of any celebrity that’s been on this show. So I didn’t really understand the “he’s just trying to make money for himself” vibe from JO’s comments.
Maybe someone else who knows more about Hines’s past and “motives” can chime in.

And from what I’ve read, Hines does do a great deal for charity, and giving back to the community. I think that recently, he was involved with a White House effort to get children of Asian and Pacific Rim heritage more active physically.
Just sayin’ though, makes me wonder what “portion” of the sales will be donated…
I doubt that Karina will be in trouble with the show. Kendra has lived with Hef himself, as did Holly Madison. Pam Anderson was Playmate of the Year at one time and has appeared at least a half dozen times in the last 15 years. Joanna Krupa appeared in Playboy during her DWTS season with Derek. This is all to create a little ratings buzz.

I originally was not concerned about this affecting things for Ralph and Karina. Really never popped into my mind until someone else mentioned that this might hurt their chances. I personally think what Karina does off the dance floor should not impact Ralph-she has the right to make her own personal choices and Ralph should pay for them by people who disapprove. However, there are people out there who might pull their support for this team when it comes out. Right now I am not voting for them because I support Mark and Chelsea, but if they go out early, Ralph and Karina will get my votes-Playboy or not.
RE: The portion of Hines’ profits from selling his stuff that isn’t going to charity – I’m guessing he’s probably preparing for the worst, since this NFL lockout shows no signs of lifting soon. If the lockout doesn’t get resolved soon, then Hines and all the other NFL players are out of work – and are going to need some source of income to pay their likely-hefty bills. I think Hines probably made a smart choice by doing DWTS this season – he’s making money in the off-season, but is still free during football season should the lockout lift. I can’t really blame him for trying to make a little extra cash on the side – most professional athletes don’t exactly have any marketable skills to fall back on should they find themselves no longer playing their respective sport. Then again, maybe I’m totally wrong and Hines is flush with money…in which case, I don’t know where that extra $$$ is going
From what I’ve seen of her Playboy shoot, I think Karina looks STUNNING. As for it hurting Ralph’s chances – I sincerely doubt it. He seems like he’s got enough of his own following (that probably doesn’t really care about Karina one way or another) to support him that a few anti-nudity protesters jumping ship isn’t going to have much of an impact.
And it still boggles my mind that we live in a country that seems perfectly fine with violence & war, but condemns things like nudity & sex…someone mentioned that Joanna had said regarding her Playboy shoot that things are much different in Poland – violence and profanity are frowned upon while sex & nudity are celebrated. No lives are being lost by Karina doffing her clothes…
Amen Courtney – this country will also give harsh ratings due to nudity and sex, but will put a PG-13 tag on movies with a tremendous amount of violence in them. That’s screwed up. Betcha the next Harry Potter movie is rated PG-13 and I can tell you from reading the books that it probably shouldn’t be. Oh, wait – Daniel Radcliffe has a nude scene, so they probably will put an R rating on it. :::rolls eyes:::
As for Hines – get a grip people, seriously. EVERYONE has to earn money. ALL celebrities earn money from fans, be it movie tickets, CDs, football games – the list is endless. Hines is giving a portion of his to a charity instead of keeping it all for himself. That is a GOOD thing. Derek gets paid to go to all these events he’s going to and dancing and signing autographs, and Cheryl, Maks, Mark – ALL the pros get paid to do stuff all the time and in one way or another, fans pay for it. No one is MAKING you pay for any of it – but if you want it, you do. I really don’t get the mindset of thinking you get their time – or anyone’s time or services – for free. Everyone’s time is valuable and everyone has to make a living. It’s kind of like taxes – if you WANT good roads, schools, jails, water, sewer, you have to PAY for it. Where do people get off thinking that all that stuff – that is a result of someone’s time, money and effort – should be FREE?? It’s madness.

I am not naive enough not to understand basic marketing, nor the possibity of a lockout.
Reality Steve says he does quite well with his site as a good second income. This may be for a number of reasons I assume.

As for Heather Mills, i did watch her season though not quite as closely and was not on Twitter or as involved at the time. So i am not sure of just what you are speaking. If it was her marriage if i remember correctly, i am aware of that sad situation.
Also i am not sure what our taxes have to do with this.
My point was, JO, that everyone’s time and efforts are worth something. That applies to Hines, Maks, Derek….and the people who teach in our schools, keep the water running, etc. People seem to have it in their heads that they deserve something for nothing. Who is getting hurt if Hines sells some of his stuff and gives a portion – regardless of size – to charity?? What is there to be outraged about?
As I have said, Princess Heidi: Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine at present has changed about Hines. The rest is what it is.
Well I am sure that none of the Steeler Nation has been harmed by Hines’ sales of his WARD wrist band.
I’m not sure how to feel about the turn this post has taken – I’m happy that people don’t seem as bothered as they were before about Karina in Playboy, but it’s a bit bothersome to me that people are so up in arms about Hines selling stuff. Heidi is spot-on in what she said – everyone’s gotta make a living somehow, and there is definitely no such thing as a free lunch…as much as some people may think they’re entitled to one. Entitlement is sooo not sexy.
Karina has made her decision, but I’m not buying what she’s selling.
In this interview from this week you can tell Karina would rather talk about DWTS and keep the attention focused on her partner in their post-show interviews. So it’s not like she’s actively trying to keep attention on that and off of Ralph. Kudos to her.
The only entitlement i have mentioned was about opinons. Certainly not any other intrepretation.
Karina and Ralph and Hines and Kym are producing fantastic dancing entertainment on my television on Monday nights. Thats simply all I care about. Period.
