DWTS 12, Week 5 – What Songs Will The Couples Dance To For Patriot Night?
PureDWTS reader Lori had a great idea in the “Yankie Doodle Dandy” Entertianment Post to quess which “American” themed songs our dancing couples might be dancing to tonight. Buttercup, one of our show informants, said to not assume the words “America” or “USA” are in the titles of the songs. She stated the songs could also be about a “State”. Buttercup also noted that the producers “are not in charge of how the couples portray their given song”.
So, below, we’ve compiled the guesses so far (from several threads) with links to videos for them. I also added several more songs I thought of when putting this post together. If you have more guesses (and even what songs each couple might be dancing to), mention them in the comment section and we’ll add them through out the day (time permitting). It will be fun to see if any of our choices are correct and are performed tonight, hmmm? Special thanks to all who have participated so far.

Good guesses.
Gawsh I love all those song pics, Vogue! Im actually really loving the themes so far this season, which is a good thing because last seasons themes were pretty much all EPIC fails. I LOVED classical week and I hope they bring it back next season and im a patriotic person so im excited about ” America/Patriotic ” week too and I really hope someone dances to Mississippi Girl aswell. xD
“New York State of Mind” is Billy Joel… maybe?
Do you think “On Broadway” would be a stretch?
Zach, I like Mississippi Girl too.
Good one Evaine! I’m adding it!
I added some additions from people on twitter too who wrote. This is fun. I’m getting so excited for tonight!!
The other version of “American Woman” – The Guess Who (who funny enough are Canadian)
“Good Bless America”
“This Land is Your Land”
I’d also guess “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue” but I think Toby Keith is singing that on the results show.
Even though I am Canadian I really hope no one dances to “Star Spangled Banner” that just seems wrong to me.
@Lisa C, I like that Toby Keith song, too. I had heard that he not singing that on the Results show, but will be doing “American Soldier,” to salute the troops.
I am going to say that I highly doubt anyone will do Star Spangled Banner. I hope.
I love American Woman by the Guess Who, but wouldn’t that be hard to dance to???
Can you foxtrot to “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy” because if so I think that will be Kendra and Louis’ song, based on the Uncle Sam costume?
Also Hines grew up in Georgia among other places. I wonder if he will dance to that? (Georgia on my Mind)
@Meggie – I believe Natalie’s paso in season 9 was to “American Woman”. She didn’t do well, but I think that had more to do with the fact that she and Alec were just not aggressive enough rather than the song itself.
Great list Vogue!! Amazing that there’s that many songs to choose from and I’m sure many more. How about Alan Jackson’s, Where were you when the world stopped turning? Although, it probably wouldn’t do the song justice to do only half. You really need the whole song. Still a great one.
I also added iTunes links to the songs so people can easily download them if they want.
Some of the music on your list makes me excited to see what they have chosen! I’m guessing ‘New York New York’ for Petra and Dimitry based on her comments…
If it is more ‘Americana’ night than ‘Patriotic’ (didn’t someone previously call it Americana Night? Maybe I’m misremembering), I would love it if someone danced to ‘Jack and DIane’ by John Mellencamp. Love that song!
Just FYI – Tom Petty’s “American Girl” has a decently strong quickstep beat that could easily be adjusted for the proper tempo…could be a possibility for Petra.
You guys are the bomb! Thanks and I just added some more thanks to you!
Per chelsea k she is dancing to song by Miley Cryus Party in the USA to a Route 66 theme chosen by Mark. haha Mark should have gotten the producers to get the The Cheetah Girls Route 66 song they did for Cars so it could go with there theme tonight.lol Should be an interesting theme for Samba. American Girl would be a great song to see tonight with Petra.
I’d laugh if somebody danced to “Callin’ Baton Rouge” by Garth Brooks.
What about James Brown’s Living in America? We wondering about it as a possibility for Mark and Chelsea’s samba.
Awesome! Just added those songs too! We’re keeping John busy as well adding the itunes links.
What a great mixture of songs everyone. I wonder how many songs on this list will appear tonight? Not long now until we find out!
What about “Chattanooga Choo-Choo” or “Pennsylvania 6-5000″?
Michele, I read in an interview that Sugar Ray and Anna would have cha-cha’ed to “Living in America” if they had not been eliminated.
Maybe “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash
Petra said that their song is about a special city and one of the greatest singers. My 1st thought was New York, New York and Sinatra. We will see.
Maybe When the Saints Go Marching In?? I like this guessing game a little too much.
OMG Guys, it looks like we are right with some of our guesses!!!! YES!!!
Thanks so much MMC and Haim for your guesses too!
@Buttercup was right – Hines and Kym may have gotten the worst rumba song ever. God Bless the USA as a Latin dance? Eek!
