DWTS Season 12, Week 5 – Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane Buckling Down To Bring A-game

Mark Ballas tells USA Today he was nervous for the results show this past week especially with four teams in the top two. He also talks of their new dance coming up. They plan to really buckle down and bring their a-game for this upcoming Monday night. More below.

And … exhale. Thanks to our fans, we’re able to take a breath. Because of your support, we’re buckling down this week to make sure we bring our A-game.

I was really nervous for Tuesday’s Results show. There were four teams in the top two this week, with Romeo and Chelsie getting the encore. Even though Team Kanenball was tied for second with a 26, I was still quite anxious for the reveal. Typically, the team with the encore is safe that week. With three other teams below us, I thought it was a very real possibility for us to be saved late in the show again.

This week we have the Quick Step. It’s the fastest of all the ballroom dances, and Chelsea has responded quite well to the faster dances. Remember how well she did on her Samba this week? Even though that’s a Latin dance, it was really fast. I expect Chelsea to continue her push for the mirror ball trophy.

The theme this week is Guilty Pleasures Week: songs you hate to admit that you love. My guilty pleasures are eating Domino’s Pizza and playing the video game Mortal Kombat. I’m stoked that the newest edition of Mortal Kombat is coming out this month. I’m preordering it!

Heidi’s Note: I will have to check (because that’s how I am) Mark’s assertion that the encore team is “typically” safe. I can think of 3 instances where that was not the case, so I bet there is more. Really shouldn’t put that idea in the fans heads – or Chelsea’s.

Pure DWTS 12 – Hanson, The Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block, and Pia Toscano To Perform On Dancing With The Stars

The excitement begins for next week already! It’s a “Guilty Pleasures” theme and on tap to perform are The Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block, and Pia Toscano. Details below from The Examiner.

There will be some serious talent on the dancing stage next week when New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) and Backstreet Boys (BSB) come to Dancing with the Stars to perform. The hosts of Dancing with the Stars took a moment at the end of Tuesday’s show to share some serious news that two of the hottest groups on tour would be gracing the stage.

The entertainment for the show doesn’t seem to run dry as week after week celebrities that America is familiar with grace the Dancing with the Stars stage for a knock out entertaining moment. Keeping the show exciting and always topical, the groups NKOTB and BSB will definitely have fans tuning in.

Advertisement In addition to the two hot groups, Pia Toscano, the eliminated American Idol contestant from two weeks ago will be performing. This is definitely one time the show executives don’t want to be asking if the public would rather see NKOTB and BSB or Pia Toscano as the answer would be very obvious.

Another Examiner article is reporting Hanson will be performing as well.

The announcement of the band hadn’t been officially shared by anyone from the show until the warm up comedian posted on his fan stream the lineup for next week. Cory Almeida who interacts with the crowd and is a comedian for Dancing with the Stars as well as American Idol posted online the upcoming guests including the surprise. Everyone is excited, even the Hanson fans.

According to People, Mark and Karina will be dancing to Pia’s performance.

“I can’t tell you the song, but it will probably be something slow and romantic,” said Ballas, who will be dancing with fellow pro Karina Smirnoff while Toscano sings.

The performance comes on a wave of rumors that the Idol finalist and Dancing pro are dating. The two were most recently spotted together this past Monday, when Toscano attended Ballas’s concert at The Mint in Los Angeles.

While Ballas will not be joining her at the mic next week, the performance is still something he says he is “looking forward to.”

“Pia … will be amazing,” Ballas said. “She is a ridiculously amazing vocalist.”

I’m excited on this entertainment and theme and I am hoping someone will dance to KC & The Sunshine Band. 🙂

DWTS 2011 – Dancing With The Stars TV Ratings for April 11 – 17th

Nielsen has complied the top 20 TV shows on Primetime and their viewership statistics for April 11-17th. Below is how Dancing With The Stars scored last week. Note how NCIS beat the results show out. My new favorite show “Body Of Proof” continues to hang tough. Do you see your other favorite shows on this list? (Heidi’s Note: There was a comment on Twitter – that I haven’t verified yet – that this past week’s DWTS was the lowest rated spring episode in the key demographics in quite a long time, maybe ever. Can’t be sure, because I haven’t looked it up. I can see, just from looking at the numbers, that the totals are off over previous Spring seasons as well. I will have to go back and do some research, but I do know that the middle of the season slumps in the total numbers – but I don’t remember it being this low. Of course, AI’s number seem to be the same as last spring – and DWTS was regularly beating them. Not so now. Cause? Anyone? Maybe a true ringer bringing stellar dancing does add something to the show? Or do people just consider this cast boring? Or did DWTS break the age old rule one time too often – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.)

DWTS Season 12 – Costuming and Make-Up For Star-Spangled Patriot’s Day

Once the head costume designer, Randall Christensen heard the playlist for the show last week, he knew “red, white, and blue” wouldn’t “be the norm”. He gives Stylist the lowdown for how he came up with some of the costumes.

Chelsea Kane: This season’s girl-to-beat turned up the heat in a pair of fringed red-and-white striped pants topped with a midriff-baring star-spangled tank. To create the kinetic pants, which punctuated every thrust of Kane’s hips, Christensen’s team cut individual strips of fabric, adhering them to the base pattern one-by-one. “Just attaching the fringe took hours upon hours,” Christensen says.

Kirstie Alley: Wore royal blue palooza pants and a tattered peasant top which featured a sheer, bedazzled midriff to boogie to Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman.” Alley danced under the tutelage of stand-in dance coach, John Travolta. The actor encouraged his friend to ditch the Manolo Blahnik heels she slipped out of last week for a pair of high-top sneakers, but Christensen gave her classic court shoes instead. “Pumps were appropriate for the song’s era,” he explains, Custom rhinestone buckles were added to authenticate the look.

Meanwhile, the design team barely had enough time to make Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s custom skin-tight leather pants, which he wore shirtless. The pants were a special request by Alley.

Petra Nemcova: The supermodel’s back-baring gold gown was inspired by the glamorous Las Vegas look of Marilyn Monroe crossed with Sharon Stone in “Casino,” Christensen says. “We had originally discussed a more Vegas showgirl look, but once the choreography was in place it was obvious the look of a more classic couple in formal wear was the way to go. And what’s more glamorous than Marilyn and Sharon?” he says. Nemcova helped design her elbow-length gloves cinched with silver-crystal jewelry while her lush ostrich boa became a feathery stole.

Kendra Wilkinson: Christensen used stretch blue satin to create her sleeveless tails and encrusted her vest in silver-studded stars. An inventive addition to her costume: Over-the-knee tights made to resemble boots. Their flexible fabric made dancing easier and Christensen added crystals for sparkle. “I think the look empowered her and gave her confidence,” he says.

Romeo: The rapper’s refined tuxedo and tails salute to Fred Astaire, and partner Chelsie Hightower’s sublime Ginger Rogers’ inspired off-white bias cut gown was StyleList’s favorite look of the night.

So, which costumes were your favorites? I loved Chelsie and Romeo, Kym and Hines, and most of all >>>>MAKS!!!! Did anyone not love this?!! And I will take Maks (and Derek if he were here) shirtless and in black leather any day before Mark! 🙂

The Wausa Daily Herald also has a great 2 page article up of the costuming process. Below is a picture of Randall’s crew and a small take. Be sure to see the link for much more.

“People really don’t realize that there’s no magic closet that we pull this from. It is a bolt of fabric every Wednesday,” said Christensen, a dancer who’s been making costumes professionally since 1978. “We never use a ready-made costume … every single solitary thing is made from scratch.”

Each week, Christensen translates their visions into sketches on Tuesday and buys the fabrics on Wednesday. His team of two patternmakers and 10 seamstresses transforms the raw materials into costumes by Friday.

Their workroom contains the highest concentration of sequins anywhere at CBS Television City, where “Dancing” is filmed. Along one wall are bolts of fabric: shimmery purple, deep emerald green and bright royal blue — materials ordered from a dance company in Europe where the fringe, stretch fabric, mesh and chiffon all match.

“That’s the toughest challenge,” Christensen said.

Fourteen sewing machines and mannequins from size 0 to 16 are in the room, as are costumes in various stages of creation. (A tiny pewter beaded number sits on a plastic-covered dress form outfitted with “booty pads.”)

Lastly, don’t miss seeing some new pictures posted by the make-up crew at their Facebook page. Here’s one of Romeo and Chelsie.
