DWTS 12, Week 8 – Ralph Macchio And Karina Smirnoff Doing a Viennese Waltz That’s Never Been Done Before And More
TV Guide has a new interview up with Karina. She gives a hint of how her and Ralph’s new dances (the Viennese Waltz and the Cha Cha) are coming along. Sounds like they have something edgy, sexy, and different planned for tonight for their Viennese Waltz. This is sounding cool so far. Here is a take. Be sure to read the link for the full interview.
You’ve said your Viennese waltz is one that’s never been done before.
Karina Smirnoff: It’s going to be so awesome! I requested this song in the beginning of the season, so I’ve been waiting to do this for a while. It’s just going to be a completely different spin on the Viennese waltz. It’s usually romantic and elegant, but ours is dark, edgy and sexy. Ralph is so different and so sexy and so dominant in it. It’s really cool. He’s totally into the character of the dance. I’m so excited about it.How do you think the judges are going to react to it, especially Len? Is it still a traditional routine?
Smirnoff: It’s still traditional. I’m not changing the moves. They’re all Viennese waltz elements. Len won’t say we broke any rules. The only difference is the mood. I think it’s going to take everyone by surprise, but I think it’s going to work. We’re both really pumped about it. It’s just a fresh twist on something you’ve seen plenty of times before. I think the judges will love it. I hope they will! How’s the cha-cha going?
Smirnoff: Great! It’s so funny because that was the team dance last week and Ralph was nervous about doing all the moves and shaking his hips and stuff, but he slowly got comfortable with it and now he can’t wait to do a whole routine. It’s going to be hot and fun. Let me tell you, he’s really gotten into the cha-cha. He is shaking it and working it! Between this and the Viennese waltz, this will be the sexiest you’ll ever see him!The cha-cha’s also the Instant Dance. What’s your plan? Are you not worried about the music?
Smirnoff: Yeah, I’m not worried about it. It’s choreographed in a way that’s adaptable to whatever music they give us. It’s obviously not completely done, but we have most of it down and I left some leeway if we need to change anything. We have option A or option B, and we’ll just work on it in those 30 minutes or whatever before we have to dance. How has Ralph been handling not only having two dances, but one where he doesn’t even know the music?
Smirnoff: It’s so tough, especially at this point in the show, but he’s been doing well. You do get really tired sometimes, and you have brain farts. Like I could tell him to step right and he’ll step left. And I’ll say, “No, right!” And he’ll keep stepping left! [Laughs] It’s hard, but we always pull through at the end of the day. This show is a testament to how powerful the human mind and will is for the pros and the celebrities. I was talking to Mark Ballas today and he was like, “Are you OK?” I said yes, but I’m just, like, exhausted. It’s an effort to talk. It took me four hours to get out of bed today!
Also and according to Karina and Ralph’s tweets, it appears Ralph is nursing an injury of some sort. Let’s hope and pray this injury won’t set these two back in any way tonight. They deserve to be in the finals in my opinion.

Great interview Vogue! I actually read it this morning and am really looking forward to their dances tonight. I know it appears Ralph is nursing an injury of some sort, so I hope it won’t affect them too much tonight. I agree with you that they deserve to be in the finals. He is charming and a good dancer. The two I see in the finals for sure are Hines and Ralph. That third spot is up for grabs in my books. You have Kirstie who is entertaining. Chelsea is a great dancer though I think Mark needs to tone down. Romeo has really improved every week. I hope he does not give up even if they did not have the best week last week.
I’m excited to see this Viennese waltz. Wonder what their song is…? Maybe Buttercup will give us a hint, if she’s lurking around
On a semi-related note – a campaign has been started on facebook to get Ralph to host SNL. If you’re interested, here it is: http://on.fb.me/jjZhRf I think he’d be riot!
Ralph and Karina must have been hanging out with Mark? Ralph’s not worried-he’s getting the career boost he wanted out of the show.
Yeah, I was concerned by this article too, but it’s more Mark’s dancing that bothers me. The real issue here is – Karina just tweeted that Ralph lost FOUR days of rehearsal. Good lord. This could be tough.
FOUR Days?????
It’s a more obscure one, fans of last decade Scorpions music will be pleased. And yeah I’m anxious to see how Ralph will do tonight, pray he can dance and knows the routines.
Buttercup, Has Ralph really only rehearsed one day???
I saw that Karina tweeted that Ralph ruptured a cyst in his knee. He could really be in trouble, but Karina sounds pretty optimistic from this interview. I hope they’re okay by tonight. I’m really rooting for these two!
@Buttercup – It isn’t “Humanity”, is it? If so, I’m pretty impressed with Karina’s musical prowess
Courtney – nope. And I don’t know exactly how much Ralph has practiced but it isn’t much. Cysts are painful!
Then I am totally drawing a blank on this song then
She must’ve picked a really obscure one…because I can’t think of any other Scorpions songs with a tempo that could even be a vague Viennese waltz. “When Love Kills Love”? IDK.
Two dances to learn in one day. Even with a no injury would be a tall order. They need more than a quick fix tonight they need a miracle. Im sorry to say.
The only Scorpions song I can even think of is “Winds of Change”.
And I really hope Ralph is going to be okay. That shit’s gotta HURT!!!
I love Scorpions (still can’t believe that Lacey (and Kyle) didn’t know who are Scorpions)
I don’t know a scorpions song that is 3/4 bar…
but I’d love they waltz to wind of change, still loving you, under the same sun…
wish to see a paso to rock you like a hurricane…
“In Search of the Peace of Mind”????? Off their first (I think) album – “Lonesome Crow” It’s about the only Scorpions song I know of in a 3/4 time…
The four days thing seems like Karina is exageratin.. They have five days of rehearsal, and Karina gave that interview with TVGuide saying things were going well. I’m sure he’s hurt, but that time table just seems off.
I hope Ralph is ok, both for his own sake and the sake of the show. It’s no fun to watch someone get hurt.
