DWTS Season 12, The Finale – Who’s Dancing What??
Ahhh…the final week. Who will win? Who won Design a Dance? Does anyone still care?? These are the questions going into the last week of the season. Do I care? Oh, I guess. 🙂 Not as much as in previous seasons, but sure.
I don’t think I need to tell our regular readers this, but I will anyway. If there is someone you want to win, YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR THEM. A LOT. If there is someone you DON’T want to win, you have to vote for someone else. That’s how this show works. You don’t get to vote someone off the island. 🙂 Here’s our dances:
Chelsea and Mark – Samba/Freestyle/????
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.01
Kirstie and Maks – Samba/Freestyle/Cha Cha
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.11
Hines and Kym – Quickstep/Freestyle/Samba
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.03
I haven’t seen anything that tells what Chelsea’s third dance is, although I feel like I saw it in the comments and I just don’t remember it.
Anyway, I have to say that I am SICK to death of Samba and Cha Cha, especially the latter. What in the HELL??? Seriously?? That said, round one certainly seems stacked in Chelsea’s favor. What happened to each couple doing a dance that they didn’t do well on the first time around?? You know – the redemption dance?? Last season they gave Jennifer the Paso Doble because their first one was so bad during Rock Week. I wonder if they change this dance according to who the finalists are. Because once upon a time, they did let the couples pick their favorite dances – I remember Brooke and Derek re-did their V. Waltz to Daughters. Hines and the Quickstep?? He got a dance he didn’t score high on the first time. Great.
Freestyle will likely be between Chelsea and Hines, since both Mark and Kym can choreograph good ones while Maks’ record isn’t so solid. That said, Mark has been…different…this season. Will he go too far and choreograph something that Len won’t like?? Or will Len simply cave?? Or will Mark go back to his roots? Should be interesting, to say the least. I’m actually rooting for Maks to put together a killer freestyle – surely he’s due one. Kym? I think their Argentine Tango last Monday showed that you don’t need crazy tricks to produce an excellent dance. As for their injuries – they can both do it. Derek managed a great freestyle with Jennifer last season, and we all know her physical limitations.
Round 3?? This is the one I’m most curious about. Will the judges straight up score it? Will they weight it to their favorite, whoever that might be? Or will they let the audience decide. Regardless, unless the couples go into the last dance at a big deficit, this last dance shouldn’t sway it. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Afterall, if you’re just fine with giving a free 15 points to one couple, then you aren’t likely to hesitate to make sure there is a solid 15 point difference between 1st and 2nd place, whether it is warranted or not.
I think they gave up on the Redemption Dance this season and are just doing the “Judge’s Choice” – from what Brooke said last week, the dance the judges thought would showcase the celebrity the best. Kirstie was really the only disaster-prone one this season of the three finalists, so they might have had a hard time choosing a redemption dance for the others… my vote would have been the Jive for both Hines and Chelsea if they were doing Redemption dances. (I actually loved Mark & Chelsea’s crazy-ass mime jive, but the judges weren’t fans.)
I must say that none of this looks too exciting. If anyone had to do a dance over that needed redeeming, it would be the awful jive that Kirstie and Maks did. She should have to redo that – it was a nightmare. If it hadn’t been for the guest judge stupidly giving her a 9 for that mess, she might actually have gone home with the other scores she got. I believe Len gave her a 6. It looks like there is no telling how the judges will sway this or if they actually will let the voters decide. Either way, I still have a bad taste in my mouth on how this all came down. All in all, i think I would like to see Hines and Kym win this. They seem to be the most genuine of the couples and have had decent scores all the way though. I know everyone loves Kirstie and wants Maks to get his first mirror ball, but I just don’t think she has been all that terrific. As for Mark and Chelsie, Chelsie is a good dancer but I think some of the audience members are going to hold the 15 points against her. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out – but none of it really excites me, I am sad to say.
right?overkill with Samba and so much cha cha they weren’t even all great like in past seasons with the dances either this seasons cast. lol I’m really rooting for Hines to take it. It would be nice for Kym to have her 2nd trophy and be tied with Mark and Cheryl 2 mirrorballs each. So Kym bring a great freestyle for Hines.Go Hines =)
Quickstep is not only his lowest but to me the least entertaining. I dont get why only this team would have a different dance than the other two. I really hope these two can pull it off because if he gets a low score on this it may be all over for them. BUT they say the freestyle wins it for you. So we shall see wont we.
I would love to see Kirstie and Maks re-do the Rumba. After the fall I think it was a beautiful dance with that music. I’d love to see it when they are on their feet!
Since Hines and Kym went last this past week. They will probably go first this week. So one of the other two will probably get the pimp spot. Oh well, you know what, whomever is meant to win will win. Its just a tacky Mirror Ball anyhow. So bring it on!!
If theynare having two cha chas tomorrow, guessing that means Hines will perform second and Chelsea will get the pimp spot. It does seem stacked in Chelsea’s favor because she will just look better dancing samba than Kirstie, even though the judges say she has better technique. Chelsea should have gotten jive. Her last jive was a cheat IMO and her jive technique was never really proven. She did a stylistical one. Len will cave tomorrow to Mark’s freestyle because they are propping them. Bet it will be like “I have been tough all seasonbut now it is okay for creativity and that was creative…blah blah.” I hope the judges see how you do not need crazy lifts for a good freestyle. I fear Hines and Kirstie splitting votes allowing a Chelsea win.
Really? I’d think Kirstie would get the pimp spot because she’s such an audience draw… she’s gotten so much publicity for this that the producers wouldn’t want to risk tons of people tuning in just for her and then tuning out once she’s danced.
I think I’m in the minority here, but I’ve just loved this season so much. Once Wendy was gone, at least, no one pissed me off and I enjoyed watching them all. I’m sad to see it go!
The whole season has been whacky, no way will they stop that for the last week! I hope there’s an explanation for why the judges chose the dances they did. They aren’t the contestants best dances, but they aren’t their worst either. I would guess they were just chosen for entertainment, but since two out of the three dances are samba, that’s not really exciting.
I thought Derek did some of his best choreography last season, which he probably wouldn’t have done if he didn’t have to work around Jennifer’s injuries. Derek and Kym are both very smart when it comes to choreographing crowd pleasing routines, especially when it comes to the freestyle, so I have a lot of faith in Kym!
@Little Red – I just wonder though, Is Kirstie as big a ratings draw as everyone thinks? She has been in the fake jeopardy quite a few times (or bottom 2, Im really not sure how they are phrasing it). Listen I love Kirstie as an actress, an her accomplishments on this show, but honestly after this season is over I dont need to see her for awhile. Im about Kirstied-out.
This season was just weird for me, and now that Ralph is gone I realize I really don’t love any of the other contestants. I think Chelsea is nice and talented, but I’m not feeling a lot of love for Mark this season. If they turn in some good, not crazy dances in the finale, I’d be fine if they won. I really like Kirstie and Maks and would love for Maks to win, but I just don’t think Kirstie is anywhere near good enough. I’ll probably vote for Hines and Kym. I agree with Henrietta that they are very genuine. And cute together. 🙂
I do think that Kirstie is a huge audience draw and ABC knows it. When the show was an hour long, she either went first or last to make people tune in. She’s never gone in the middle of the pack until they started dancing more than once dance. She and/or Maks used to Twitter when they were dancing (first or last) but they don’t anymore. I am guessing that ABC told them not to because it would affect the audience numbers. I don’t think that Kirstie has ever been truly in jeopardy, it is all for the ratings. This is all guessing, but it makes sense to me.
My hope for tomorrow night is that Chelsea ends up at the bottom. I like Hines fine, but all of my votes will go to Kirstie!
Brooke called the 1st dance “Judges’ Pick” – chosen for each couple to show them at their best. So they picked quickstep for Hines? Really? I think he’s at a disadvantage based on both style of dance and original score.
Someone somewhere said that the 3rd dance was each couple’s favorite.
The Quickstep is one of my favorite dances for him throughout the season, but a lot of that just has to do with how dapper he and Kym looked in those costumes. And… I kind of started shipping them then. *shifty eyes*
I think Chelsea is adorable and will dance her little heart out, but I’m not sure she has the audience backing to pull it off no matter how good her scores are. This might be giving Mark more credit than he deserves, but I wonder if he consciously chose to go wacky every week to try and make Chelsea a talking point for audience members, because she’s sweet but a little forgettable on her own.
I am so scared right now.
Also, Cami, I agree with you 100%!
Everything you said.. yes, yes, yes!
I’m with Cami too. I think Kirstie is a huge draw and I’m hoping her fan base will take her all the way as you all know. I’m hoping Maks has a super killer compassionate Freestyle planned. I hope Len hates Mark’s Freestyle and gives him heck for it. lol
Here’s to tomorrow night. I can’t wait.
I also can’t wait for Season 13 when Derek gets back (I hope I pray).
I don’t think there is a real “pimp spot” once you get down to three dancers. The pimp spot is about going last so that you are the last thing the viewer sees, so that you are more likely to get votes or just to keep the audience tuned in right to the end. From a voting standpoint, I think that advantage is largely gone – there are only 3 dancers dancing twice and if you can’t remember that there’s no hope for you. 🙂 It’s all about viewers at this point and since the show is only an hour tomorrow, I don’t know that there is a true advantage to having Kirstie go last. Plus, it’s the finale.
Meh…I am also so sick of these Latin “sexy” dances! Where are the energetic dances?? Ralph is gone so I don’t really care.
@M – I agree with you about Ralph, so come on with me. Give your votes to Kirstie!!!!! 😀
Well it looks like Heidi beat me to it :-), but I’ll go ahead a beat a dead horse a bit more – running order really doesn’t mean much once you get down to say, 5 couples or less, or the halfway point of the season…so I wouldn’t worry too much about who gets the pimp spot. My post on running order explains it in more detail, if you’re interested.
I’m interested to see these freestyles. Kirstie has confirmed she’s dancing to Pink’s “F’in Perfect”, so I’m a little concerned that her song may be a bit too slow to really make an impact. Hines’ freestyle is to a Jackson 5 song (I’m thinking it’s “I Want You Back” or “Can You Feel It”) and has a halftime/marching band theme to it. Sounds good to me. Haven’t heard too much about Chelsea & Mark’s – but it will undoubtedly be filled with tricks, stunts, & Mark’s Jimmy Legs. Haha 😉
As for these judges’ choice dances – I’m assuming they’re just doing the same routines over again? They don’t have to create an entirely new routine like the redemption dance, right? If so – I think Hines’ easily has the edge. LOVED that quickstep – it was slick & sexy, & with a fun theme. I think Chelsea’s samba may have been good up against the other nonsensical routines of “American Night”, but it may not look so great up against an all-around good routine like Hines’. Poor Kirstie – loved her samba, but I don’t think her showmanship can outshine Chelsea’s technique in the judges’ eyes. Pulling for Hines in that round! 😀
@Courtney – Thanks for that, I was beating my brain trying to think of a Jackson 5 song and all I could think of was “ABC’ is easy as 123”, didnt really think that was it.
Sounds like Judges choice would be a repeat performance of the dance the Judges liked. So Im good with that, (was sweating that one a bit), Part Time Lover was a great choice for that quickstep. As far as Perfect by Pink it was just used last week as a battle duet song on The Voice, so me personally it sounds used already. (my opinion). Mark and Chelsea well Im just speechless I have nothing to say.
Cami,
I’ve thought that too, that Kirstie has never been “really” been in jeopardy before. I think it is all for ratings. She has a huge fan base and I think they all vote like mad, I know I do. I think she will go last tomorrow night, but I don’t think that it matters either. With three left there are no advantages to any order. I am one of those people who think that DWTS is not just about dancing. I think it is everything from personality, entertainment, improvement, etc. Kirstie fits all of these.
Go Kirstie and Maks!!
The “Judge’s Choice” is actually a whole new dance, because Chelsea was bemoaning not being able to wear her American Flag pants again. 😉 The couple’s choice dance on Tuesday is just a re-do of existing choreography, I think.
@Voguerista Not to be a killjoy but …. When Derek comes back he’ll get someone with a small fan base who has 2 left feet, mark my words.
There’s no way the producers are going to risk him winning a 4th MBT.
I hope Kirstie and Maks’s collective fanbases will get Maks the MBT this season. Do you realise that NO OTHER pro could have got Kirstie this far?
I love Kirstie but Maks has had to stretch his teaching, choreographing and counselling capabilities to the limit this season. He’s the only one strong enough to incorporate lifts into the routines. Plus who else could have manouvered through the minefield of Kirstie’s ‘assistance’ with the costuming and choreography and short attention span?
The MBT won’t be enough reward IMO.
Claudia, it wouldn’t be the first time Derek has got someone who couldn’t or didn’t dance very good in the beginning. He can make a dancer out of anyone. It’s sad because as soon as he does, everyone cries that he got a “ringer”. People need to accept the guy has a remarkable ability to teach dance.
Anyway, I love Maks too and I really hope he and Kirstie take it. I wouldn’t care if Hines won as well.
Lol Claudia. I don’t think the producers give a rats ass if Derek gets a fourth mirror ball or not – I do think they will give him someone that will allow him to stick for a while because the popular pros are just as much a draw as the celebs. There is always the fact that celebs ask for him and maks both, too. Nicole and Jennifer both asked for him. If someone they want on the show badly enough asks for Derek, then they’ll get Derek. I think the LAST concern on their mind is the mbt.
Anyway, like vogue said, they’ve tried to give him people who won’t stick around long before and it never seems to work out that way. What are they going to do? Ask him to throw it? Not be a good teacher?
Judges’ Pick is a new routine to new music. I think that both Kym and Kirstie mentioned that. So, it’s 2 new dances Monday and 1 repeat on Tuesday.
Sorry @Little Red! Just saw your comment 23. Didn’t mean to repeat.
@Courtney – Hines says on an interview (http://www.wpxi.com/video/27967226/index.html) at 1:15 in that it’s a “Jackson 5 medley”. So that could be interesting. And as far as their quickstep, Kym says that it will be different music (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xis4v0_dwts-hines-kym-rebound_shortfilms) at about 2:55 in, so would it be the same routine? Or, are they going to make all 3 couples re-choreograph a dance to new music?
I went and listened to the Pink music for Kirstie, and I’m with you – sounds too slow to really make an impact… sigh… I REALLY want Kirstie to knock it out of the park tomorrow night! 🙂
What season was it when they changed the finals to add the extra judged dance on Tuesday night? If I remember correctly, it was in response to another crazy final that people complained against, so they gave the judges some ‘influence’ on the outcome with points that couldn’t be counteracted by fans votes.
And last season, didn’t they have two dances on the second night? The favorite dance and the cha-cha off? I’m surprised they didn’t keep the second and make it another WTA event, so they could really determine the outcome…
@Claudia, that crazy guest judge with the REALLY white teeth is the one that got Kirstie this far. With slight overscoring on other dances by our own beloved judges – just like with Bristol, they’ve been really kind to her on somewhat horrible, slow, basic choreo dances – and the fans have done the rest. Without that freaky guest judge, we’d might be taking about Ralph or Romeo’s final dances….
Re Kirstie as a ratings draw,
Didn’t ABC actually credit her with DWTS’s high ratings numbers at upfronts last week? I thought I read that. It took me aback that they would come right out and say it… and it confirmed to me that they must have really wanted her to stay on the show.
Don’t get me wrong, though, I WANT Kirstie to stay. I love her and am hoping, hoping, hoping she pulls out an amazing freestyle. Please let Maks choreograph his best ever.
Judges’ choice – new songs, I assume they’re new routines.
LittleRed is correct. The Judge’s PIck is like the redemption dance, I think, maybe, but as a new routine. And the tuesday night dance is the “Favorite” dance of each of the couples. Kirstie is great doing the Cha Cha so of course that’s their favorite dance. Hines picked his Samba because it was from personal stories week. And Chelsea… oh who knows. Anyway, looking forward to hopefully entertaining and fun finals.
Voguerista/Heidi:
Did Jennifer and Nicole actually ask for Derek? Now of course I do believe you, who wouldn’t want him. There are those who say the producers pair them off. When Jennifer first met Derek remember how excited she was to get him? The guy is not only a brilliant dancer and choreographer, but a great teacher as well. (As you said, he can make a dancer out of just about anyone).
Jennifer will be in the audience tonight, from what she has said on twitter. Is this the norm or are previous winners asked to be there as a courtesy?
I also hope Maks and Kirstie win it all. Would love to see Maks win one for a change.
I’m almost positive Chelsea and Mark are doing their Viennese Waltz – it was in an interview video about Mark getting a shot in his butt, lol, but the video was on the 20th. In the video, it showed them rehearsing that – why else would they rehearse it if they weren’t going to do it?
Again, I’m the only person on Team Kanenball xD Oh well.
Hannah, I saw the same video – I think it was The Insider. http://www.theinsider.com/news/40792_Chelsea_Kane_Talks_Mark_Ballas_Shot_in_the_Butt_During_Dancing_with_the_Stars_Rehearsal/
You’re not the only one on Team Kanenball 🙂
I agree with Claudia…No one deserves that MBT more than Maks this season. He has done one of the most remarkable teaching jobs in the history of DWTS.All I see is over the top praise for Derek, but I wonder what would have happened if he had been Kirstie’s partner this year?
Poor Maks, he’ll always get the big girls because he’s the biggest pro. But I have to say he always does an excellent job with them. Some more than others depending on their dancing ability. When you’re choreographing, it’s easier with short arms and legs, as opposed to longer limbs and larger bodies
I would love to see Kirstie and Maks get that MBT.
I’m hoping that its Chelsea and Mark’s paso that is their last dance….not because they didn’t do good on it though…..because it it showed that Chelsea isn’t as good as thr judges make her out to be. Kirstie’s samba las time did ell so this could be her perfect score dance. A little confused about Hines doing quickstep again though. He did good an d everything but I would have chose foxtrot for him.
I have to laugh at Sam for his comment about “over the top” praise for Derek which comes right after a statement that says “no one deserves the MBT more than Maks this season”. LOL – there’s over the top and then there’s over the top. I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder. LOL. Frankly, I disgree – I think it should be Hines and Kym for having blended the dance with the personality, as opposed to having one or the other like the other two couples seem to have.
All my votes are going to Hines, but I would be fine if Kirstie took it.
Margaret, if you watched the Top 10 dances last season, the text included with the dances said straight up that Nicole asked for Derek after she saw his Futuristic Paso Doble with Joanna. As for Jennifer, I believe I read that somewhere, or heard Jennifer say it – can’t remember where, sorry.
ETA: Its common for previous dancers to fill the audience, but I think it might be contractural. I only think that because of what a beyotch Kelly Monaco was when Tom spoke to her last season. I got the feeling she was there against her will.
Yeah, Princess Heidi, it’s ok to laugh, and you’re right , it’s all in the eyes of the beholder. I’m just saying that Maks had the least ( or most, 🙂 ) besides Tony, to work with this season, and he’s in the finals…If that’s over the top, then so be it. I’d still like to see what Derek could do with a partner like Kirstie or Wendy. Or Kate Gosselin. 😉
Hines is one of my favorite NFL players, and if he wins, I’ll be ok with that, too. I’m more worried about an NFL season right now , than Hines getting the MBT.
@Princess Heidi – DId you see the article on the web about Derek and Cheryl Cole, it more or less says that Derek is not good enough for her and I think its either Fox and/or the XFactor, are pressuring her to end it with him….Can you believe it.
Its posted in Popeater if you want to check it out. It says hes only a small-time dancer on a TV show….Ouch!
Of course I’ve seen it, and I have to laugh. It’s written from the UK perspective and NONE of the dancers on the UK version have reached the level of fame that the US dancers have reached. It’s also laughable because NO ONE knows who the hell Cheryl Cole is in the US and….she’s just going to be judge number 3 (after Simon and Paula) on a reality TV show. Which is so much more prestigeous than a dancer. :::rolls eyes:::
I do think they have broken up, but IF it’s because of the reasons the article states, then Derek is WELL rid of her (although I doubt he realizes that yet). I think it’s more likely due to the fact that they hardly get to see each other. I’ve gotten the impression from some of his tweets that he’s a bit down at the moment, poor guy.
As for you, Sam, Derek has had dancers that weren’t that great, but he turned them into dancers. Derek’s dad said that Derek told him that he had to teach Joanna to WALK correctly before he could teach her to dance and that Derek was convinced they would be gone the first week (not to mention that most people saw her as a beyotch of a calibur rarely seen on DWTS). He had similar problems with Shannon. Jennie had horrible stage fright. Lil’ Kim routinely kept Derek waiting for 3 hours or more at the studio while she was off doing whatever – and had just been released from PRISON. What people like you have to realize is that making it far in the competition isn’t just based on luck, but on skill and ability to teach. Neither Maks nor Tony has had a shortage of great partners – if they can’t win with them it is HARDLY Derek’s fault, no matter how hard you try to make it so. Mel B, Lalia Ali, Misti May, Erin, and Brandy for Maks and Audrina, Melissa, Willa (and probably others that I can’t remember off the top of my head) for Tony – these are not liabilities as partners. In fact, more than a couple have a bit of a tinge of RINGER around them – Melissa, Erin and Mel B, to be specific. Neither Maks nor Tony could close the deal with them.
And yes, I will continue to hammer away on this topic until people realize they don’t get to play the revisionist history game here. Take it to the ABC message boards where everyone just screams and stamps their feet.
Ow… I have been royally told off by the Princess.
She really likes Derek, doesn’t she? I don’t,but that’s subjective…I’ve enjoyed coming here to read the articles. Sorry to have stepped on toes. Didn’t think I was screaming or stamping my feet, just stating my opinion, like the other posters.
M, I agree with you, now that Ralph is gone, I no longer care.
Always enjoy reading folks thought here.
Re: rating – Tom Bergeron has said that certain 1/2 hours of this season’s DWTS have brought the show it’s highest ratings in 5 years. Probably not a coincidence that those ratings grabbing times happen to coinincide with when Kirstie has danced.
Re: the redo dances, word is that the judges picks this season were for dances they enjoyed more than needed redeeming. It is also my understanding that everything about the dance (i.e. choreo, music, costumes) will new.

“she?” Man up, Sam. Here’s the thing that gets me – I don’t think some of you remember what it’s like to have an actual conversation. You say something, then I say something in agreement or disagreement, you respond, then I respond and so on. That, is a discussion. Now, when you respond with comments about stepping one toes and about how much I like Derek, you are not contributing to the discussion but are wimping out and playing the martyr card. It’s cheap, it’s easy and convenient when confronted with facts or opinions you don’t want to address. Yes, everyone gets that you have an opinion. Guess what – so do I. I also have a very low tolerance for your brand of revisionist history combined with whining. It might also help if you read my comment more closely – it’s the abc boards where ppl stomp their feet.
I do like Derek very much. But guess what? I hate stupid revisionist history – particularly that which implies that poor Tony and poor maks (or god forbid poor mark) always get bad partners – WAY more than I like Derek. It insults my intelligence, especially when some one new tries every week to sell it here.
And why do you think someone tries to sell it every week? Could there be some truth in it? Heidi , this is your site and you get to say what is allowed and what isn’t…this all started with my remark about Derek, which was done with levity. Evidently I not only struck a nerve, I whacked it a good one.
There are some of us out here that don’t worship at the Derek shrine. Is he the best dancer? I don’t think so. Is he the best teacher? I don’t think so. Could he have gotten Kirstie this far? I don’t think so. Is he scored differently and given preferential treatment more so than the other male pros? I think so. Is it Derek’s fault that he and Mark are the only male pros with a Mirror Ball? No. It’s the manipulation that has been going on in reality shows since their beginning. He’s just been on the receiving end.
I have no basis for my opinion other than what I’ve seen during the past three seasons, I didn’t watch before then. I don’t have your knowledge and expertise on all things DWTS including the personal lives of the pros. Don’t really care to. And guess what…I have a low tolerance for condescending replies.
I can’t “man up” as you suggested. I’m not a guy. I know the rules of conversation now thanks to your tutelage. I stand corrected. Cheers.
Of course you can man up – that is an expression, a figure of speech. I’m sure you’ve heard of that. As for why someone says it every week – well, there are lots of bitter fans of other pros who try to rewrite the FACTS all the time. Jealousy. You prove it with every post, but thanks for playing. Since you’ve only watched the past 3 seasons, you really have no business offering an opinion. Buh bye.
Come back when you can actually post about the show and not about me. I’m flattered, but really.
