Dance of the Day…. Let’s compare Emmitt and Apolo!
So, we’re going to continue comparing our Dancing of the Stars Champions, pitting two of them against the other using the first dance they did. We have 12 seasons, so we have a few more days (at least, haha). So last, we had Season 1 champ Kelly vs Season 2 champ Drew which you can see here. You can continue to vote which dance you prefer, Kelly or Drew.
Today, we will turn our attention to Season 3 Champ Emmitt Smith and Season 4 Champ Apolo Anton Ohno. Upcoming will see Helio vs Kristy, Brooke vs Shawn, Donny vs Nicole, Jennifer vs Hines. And at the end of our Champion Comparisons, I’m thinking of creating one mega post, pitting the 6 winners against each other using their Week 5 dance. Ultimately, only one can be DOD Champion, and we’ll post the final winner’s Freestyle. I could make this series go longer, but I do want to begin to focus on other things to feature in our Dance of the Day, such as favorite rumbas or quickstep or theme dance, randomly chosen, or dances requested in the comments.
It’s Emmitt and Apolo Day!!
SEASON 3: Emmitt Smith is a football player, and Carrie Ann’s original “Twinkle Toes.” His professional partner was Cheryl Burke, in her second season on the show. Season 3 was the first season I saw, and I’ve been hooked on the show since. Emmitt’s win made Cheryl the FIRST Professional dancer on DWTS to have 2 wins, and the first back to back winner.
SEASON 4: Apolo Anton Ohno is a speed skater, and a multiple Olympic gold medal winner. At the time he competed in DWTS, he was also actively training and racing in World Class speed skating, and he had to fit training for DWTS into his already hectic schedule for his speed skating. His professional partner was Julianne Hough in her first season of the show, she was 18 years old, the youngest professional dancer on the show. (She still holds that title, since Chelsie Hightower was 19 yo when she started on the show)
Without further ado, here’s our Champions in their first week
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke performed a cha cha on Week 1 to “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield.
Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough performed a cha cha on Week 1 to “Let’s Hear It For the Boy” by Deniece Williams
Again, we’ll take a Poll… Which dance did you prefer, Emmitt or Apolo? Tell us why in the comments!
APOLO for me!!
This is fun Lori!!! 😉
Apolo for sure. This comparison showed judges’ inconsistency from one season to another. Cheryl was the returning champ and Emmitt very personable – 24. Apolo performed more difficult choreography more sharply with a newbie partner – 21.
It is fun to how the champs began. Thanks, Lori!
Emmitt! he was smooth and relaxed, Apolo was stiff and off beat!
I looved Emmitt. He was fantastic and he could move. I liked Apollo more after his samba, thats when I started to pay more attention to him.
So for week 1 I would say Emmitt, I was hooked from week 1.
AL,
absolutely! Apolo’s samba was the dance that made me root for him and became a fan of Julianne!
Season 4 was the first season I started watching the show on youtube. And I started watching from week 3 (so searched for w1 and w2), so, my favs were Joey and Laila, until apolo’s samba.
After this, I watched season 3 (and stayed a long time wondering why Mario didn’t won, but after I discovered), Season 2 (and felt in love with stacey and blamed Tony until now… hahaha), and season 1. all on internet.
I think that season 4 still one of my favs of all. besides seasons 5, 12, (10 was cool, but just bc of nicole and derek as 11 because of jen grey and derek, and 9 had potential to be a great season, but too big cast…)
about the dances, I had to vote for Emmitt, because of the “coolness” factor… ahaaah the guy has personality since his first show.
btw, how hot is cheryl on this dress, uh? steamy
sorry about the flood, but guys I’ve suggested this before, and I’m gonna do it again… you would do a post like “who danced it better”, compareing dances daced to the same song… for example, American Woman (Natalie paso and Kirstie fox), Espana Cani (various pasos…)
Carlos, that IS a great idea, but I don’t think it would be something that *I* could do in the Dance of the Day. Comparing types of dances, like quicksteps or pasos, yes. Comparing dances to the same song is beyond my skillset… Mainly because i don’t usually notice when songs are repeated (mostly).
There are definitely many ways to do DOTD, and we will (hopefully) have a lot of between season time, maybe we can explore your idea further…
Thanks!
thanks, lori =]
That’s why i called it “who danced it (the song) better”… DOTD was a thing you created… =] and this is another proposal…
hope anyone from Pure can do it =] I may help…
I remember:
1- Wayne and Jen Grey danced tango to “La Cumparsita”
2- Christián and Situation quickstepped to “Americano”
3- Ralph and Gilles salsa to “I know you want me”
4- Laila and Jake quickstep to “Walk like an egyptian”
5- Niecy and Kirstie jived to “La bamba”
6- Mario and Emmitt (the first challange of this type) samba to “Sir Duke”
7- Chelsea and Brooke – samba to “hip hip chin chin”
8- Kirstie and Cameron – samba to “Magalenha”
9- Bristol and Chuck (think there’s another I don’t remember) – samba “Mas que nada”
10- Laila and Jerry and Emmitt – España Cañi
11- Percy and Pamela – “Don’t let me be misunderstood”
12- Stacy and Kendra – “Livin’ la vida loca”
think that Lisa rinna and another I don’t remember danced to “walking on sunshine”
These are the songs that I remember by now… =p
It’s funny – I watched Emmit’s and was ‘meh’. Assumed I was going to love and be blown away by Apollo’s – and I wasn’t. Slow cha-cha’s from both of them – maybe owing to week one nerves and newness to dancing, but neither really impressed me. Emmit won by charm alone…
How could anyone not love Apolo? I could watch his dances over and over again. Apolo and Juliannes freestyle is still one of my all-time favorites.
To me theres no contest whatsoever, Apolo is number 1.
Emmit! He’s my favorite.
[…] We’ve been taking the time, and revisiting our twelve DWTS Champions on their first week of their Seasons. These were our first impressions that we had of them, and we’re comparing them, two at a time. Once we get through all 12 seasons, I’ve got a couple ideas rolling around inside my head. First, we saw Season 1′s Kelly Monaco and Season 2′s Drew Lachey, and you can see that post here. Next, we saw Season 3′s Emmitt Smith and Season 4′s Apolo Anton Ohno, and you can see that post here.
