Dance of the Day… Let’s compare Donny and Nicole!
It’s definitely getting more difficult in choosing my favorites! It’s been said over the seasons, that the quality of the dancing has been improving, as the seasons go on, and I am seeing that! What do you think? We’re almost done, and shortly, we’ll move on to compare other things, and then come back to this. I want everyone time to watch and vote for their favorites, so when we get through the 12 seasons, we’ll come back to finish. Meanwhile, if you’ve not watched and voted for your favorites, here’s what we’re doing…
We are watching our DWTS Champions on their first week’s dancing, and comparing our first impressions of them. So far, we’ve seen Kelly Monaco and Drew Lachey, Emmitt Smith and Apolo Anton Ohno, Helio Castroneves and Kristi Yamaguchi, and Brooke Burke and Shawn Johnson. Today, we will see Donny Osmond and Nicole Scherzinger, and then following, Jennifer Grey and Hines Ward.
When we’re done, I’ll move on for a time to allow people to vote in the above polls, and we can compare rumbas and foxtrots before coming back to here. We’ll take the 6 poll winners, and put them against each other, in 2 groups of 3, and we will watch their Week 5 dances. Then we’ll take the winner of each of those, and they’ll battle it out with their Freestyles! When I announce the winners, we’ll see some randomly selected dances that we’ve not reviewed yet. Does that make sense?
Anyway, onward we go! DONNY VS NICOLE!!!
Season 9 brought us Donny Osmond with his professional partner, Kym Johnson. Donny’s sister, Marie, was a contestant on Season 5, and she made it to 3rd place, and had the infamous doll dance. I had thought about using it on a day we were rewatching dances we didn’t want to relive, but instead, if you want to see it, just click the link. Donny had a show in Vegas with his sister, while he was also training and competing on DWTS.
DONNY AND KYM SEASON 9 WEEK 1, Foxtrot to All That Jazz.
Nicole Scherzinger came to us during a Season which brought us several competitors who all had the ability to win…. If they weren’t all competing against each other. However, her biggest competitor was herself, as she was the ultimate perfectionist. Tom has a great line, after the critiquing of Nicole and Derek, about parallel universes…. You’ll hear it when you watch. Bruno and Carrie Ann gave glowing critiques, while Len sat and picked it apart, showing the flaws…. I do think some critique is necessary, so that the celebrity can grow as a dancer, but couching it so that it doesn’t come across like they are a terrible dancer is important… But, Len obviously saw Nicole’s potential, and decided to make her work toward that.
NICOLE AND DEREK SEASON 10 WEEK 1, Viennese Waltz to Hold You In My Arms by Ray LaMontagne
So, which Week 1 dance did you like better? Donny or Nicole?
NO DOUBT NICOLE!!!!
This competition ain’t even fair. Not only that – Donny’s season was the lowest rated. 🙂 Yes, I am almost done with my ratings post.
LOL Heidi! I can’t wait!!!!
I was waiting for this post. I loved them both and knew they would win from week one (in fact after week one I predicted that Mya and Evan would be the runners up as well….Mya because her last name wasn’t Osmond and Evan becuase his personality was adorable but odd….is walle impression rocked though). But back to Donny and Nicole lol. Donny had the it factor and was theatrical and clearly a fan fave and Nicole was AMAZING. people can scream ringer all they want at both but they really made their seasons what they were. i ddn’t know donny’s was the lowest watched/rated season though….I thought that was the past season.
When I came to this article even before reading, I was thinking, “oh boy, here we go.” I was afraid of seeing the comments about Donny being old, stiff and how he won just because of his fanbase. The whole attacking on Donny is pretty old already and he wasn’t with Derek, a fan favorite, who had Nicole. So I expected some Donny-bashing. But of course, this is not the ABC board and our writers are really nice people so I should’ve known better.
I don’t think you can compare the two, especially the first week. Donny has a larger fanbase and we know that a large fanbase really helps a couple make it another week. But he wasn’t with the most popular pro (I don’t know why she’s not more popular than I personally feel she should be) like Nicole was. Derek pulls all the stops and has one of the best choreography on DWTS. I do think as many people feel also that Kym is also one of the best choreographers on the show and that’s why she’s always been in the final 2 and never in third place like other pros who have been in the finals at least 3 times. So I think having a great pro partner helps so much.
Nicole and Donny both had showmanship, talent and experience in show business. As for the first week, I’m not sure it’s fair to compare them unless they were doing the same dance but they weren’t. I can try to think back on Donny’s V. Waltz and Nicole’s Cha cha (I’m gonna have to go on youtube to check out Nicole’s Cha-cha because I don’t remember it all. I don’t remember season 10 much anyway due to critical illness during that season so it was a good thing in a way that Kym took a break in season 10). and compare their V. Waltz and Cha-cha as I think that would be more fair.
I totally see Liz’s point about comparing a Week 1 cha-cha to a Week 1 V. waltz. I’m just not sure that it’s fair to compare a Week 1 cha-cha to a Week 9 cha-cha either. Donny’s V. waltz and Nicole’s cha-cha were both near the end of the season. Just my opinion, but I would think that the general technique/performance improves for most people over time, so there’s an advantage to having a dance later in the season. 6 of one, half dozen of the other I guess. 🙂
Well, I started watching DWTS because of Donny Osmond. Well, after a couple weeks since I didn’t want to watch if they were mean to him (I’d been assured they were being fair/nice to him).
I think that Donny’s dance was great–fun and full of great entertainment. He had the better performance in terms of showmanship and just plain fun.
Nicole’s dance was great as well, very elegant and flowing. The song didn’t lend itself as well to showmanship as Donny’s had , but her technique was certainly stronger.
In the end I’d have to give the nod to Nicole as the best combination of technique and performance.
