Tony Dovolani Tweets about Amateur Ballroom on DWTS
Could this be what Maks was referring to when he spoke about “special arrangements”?? Makes sense, since Lacey and Cheryl also appear to be doing similar things at their studios. Maybe they are having a contest between the pros studios?? Or is the “special arrangement” something else? Hmmmm….any ideas?? Inside knowledge? Wild-assed guesses?? 🙂
Too cool!! I can not wait to see what this is all about???
I hope they have all the pros dance students fro mtheir studios compete against one another!!! Awesome twist!
Actually, Vin, I think that would be a pretty cool twist as well. But what about the pros that don’t have studios?? Are they going to promote Derek’s movie, Mark’s CD, etc?? I would KILL to see a pro dance or Macy’s Stars of Dance with a group from Derek’s movie – it’s dance related!! Which pros have studios?? Cheryl, Lacey, Maks/Tony….are there more?? What about Anna, Kym, Karina…?? This could turn out to be a huge deal in free promotion for their outside interests.
I think Anna and Jonathan have a studio or two… I think called You Can Dance? Except no question mark – the question mark is from me because I’m not sure. Haha. You know what I mean. 🙂
That would be a cool competition though.
The others should def promote their stuff as well like Lacey’s song, Mark’s music, and Derek’s movie. Show the multitalented aspect of each pro. On a side note, if Kym or Karina don’t already have a dance studio I can easily say guys would easily come to them for dance traing wholeheartidly lol.
I have heard rumblings Mark and Lacey are also doing this. Lacey is probably using students from her dad’s new studio and Mark has been working with some VIBE students in Utah. I’m not so sure that this in so much about promoting dancer’s outside interests as trying to come up with a new feature to keep interest on Tuesday night results shows.
It looks like a mini SYTYCD to me.
Well now, let’s think about this for a minute. Interesting thought, Maddy. 🙂 Now… if indeed it’s something like a mini SYTYCD, and if indeed it’s our pros choreographing routines for their students, maybe it would give them all a better chance to choreograph something Emmy-nom worthy without the um… disadvantage (?) of a celeb partner? I’m just thinking out loud here, random thoughts and stuff. Mind you, those amateurs (a la Tony’s Tweet) would have to be damned good, so maybe that’s not such a viable idea.
Or maybe they’re looking at it as another way to promote Dance? Which I think is very cool. 🙂
Doesn’t Mark work with the Vibe students on a semi-regular basis though??
It would be an interesting feature, though I would rather Derek come up with something showcasing his new tap dancing skillz. 🙂 I guess, as of this moment, I’m not really interested in seeing a bunch of new faces. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it all pans out.
I think the celeb partner is definitely a disadvantage, Evaine – but I also think that ballroom itself is a disadvantage when it comes to Emmys. The dancers these guys would teach would likely be every bit as good as the kids that show up on SYTYCD – all dancing for years – so I don’t think that’s a problem. Just look at how SYTYCD cut that world champion Ten Dancer – she was probably the most decorated, award winning person on that show and they cut her at the first oportunity to keep that silly blond contemporary dancer who me and Courtney…well, we don’t like her. 🙂 That, I think, is a symptom of what the choreographers think of Ballroom – and my personal opinion is that they can’t do it, so they don’t like it. To get a nomination it’s choreographers voting for choreographers – and most are hip hop or contemporary. They’ll vote for their own. If Louis doesn’t get a nomination next year for that Tango, I’ll be pissed – it was easily in the top three of anything they’ve done this season so far, IMO. And I don’t even LIKE Louis – that should tell you something. 🙂
And maybe that’s why they’re doing this. I just read some more info on dwtsgossip and it definitely looks like a mini SYTYCD.

Just as an aside, the 4 (or is it 5) ballroom dancers they’ve kept on SYTYCD Canada are doing really well.
I definitely agree with you and Court et al, when you say ballroom is at a disadvantage at Emmy time. Maybe some of the reason is that folks think it’s so fraught with rules that it can never express emotions the way a contemporary, angst-ridden, everybody cry routine does.
And it looks like it’s youngsters they’re wanting for this new thingamie… 17 to 22 did I read? I’m just hoping that it’s interesting and fun. 🙂
