J.R. Martinez Dishes On The Viennese Waltz, Practicing For Dancing With The Stars, and More!
J.R. Martinez says he’s not nervous to dance yet, but, he will be come Sept. 19th on the premiere of Dancing With The Stars. He’s not intimidated, it just adds to “the coolness” factor. He also explains how he got on the show and how he’s getting ready for it. His first dance will be the Viennese waltz. Here is a take below, but, be sure to visit the Dalton Daily Citizen (his hometown newspaper in Georgia) for more. He talks of the last All My Children episodes as well.
“I don’t have any formal (dance) training. When I was a teenager, my mother would always try to dance with me and teach me to dance. But I didn’t want to until I figured out that girls like guys who can dance. Then it wasn’t an issue,” he said.
To get ready for the show, he began practicing with his partner, Karina Smirnoff, five days before the cast was officially announced. Now, they and the other dance teams are practicing up to five hours a day six days a week to get ready for the premiere.
“One thing that benefits me is that I work out and stay physically active. I felt like I was in great shape, and I am. But when I wake up, I’m not sore, but it’s like I got a good workout,” he said. “It feels good now. But talk to me as we get further into the competition, when it will get even tougher.”
Martinez’s debut dance will be the Viennese waltz.
“It’s a very beautiful dance, very elegant, very graceful. Sometimes I’m not so graceful, and that’s one of the things I’m having to teach my body — to get the hand movements exactly right or to make sure my arms are in the precise place they need to be,” he said. “It’s a tough dance, but it’s a beautiful dance, and I’m glad it’s my first dance.”
Martinez says he feels confident that he’ll be ready come show time.
“I can look at it and honestly say ‘That’s not bad,’” he said. “We have the routine down. We have the steps down. Now, it’s just a question of fine-tuning everything and making sure it’s where it needs to be.”
Martinez gives much of the credit to Smirnoff, who has won numerous ballroom dancing titles and has appeared on eight previous seasons of “Dancing with the Stars.”
“Karina has been great at putting up the whole routine. She is so talented. And she has a great personality that meshes really well with mine,” he said. “She’s a great teacher. We are having fun, but she’s breaking it down for me in ways that lets me understand what I really need to be getting my body to do.”
While the practices have been intense, Martinez says he has gotten a chance to spend time with the other celebrity contestants on the show.
“We all practice in the same facility, so we all hang out together. It really depends on when they take breaks. The person I’ve been seeing most is probably Chaz Bono. We seem to be on the same schedule,” he said. “Another one is Rob Kardashian. It’s really cool. Everyone is nice and easy to get along with. Our competitive nature is saying ‘You’re going down. You’re all going down.’ But at the end of the day, it’s all fun.”
Picture above from Karina’s twitter. Wow, I am loving those “lines”!! Beautiful hold!!
ADDING: And below is a rehearsal video from ET!! Wow, he looks fantastic dancing this early in the game in my opinion! He also talks of how he was burned. My heart goes out to him.

J.R. seems like a sweetheart! Good Luck to him & Karina!!
I agree, he seems like a sweetie, and I love Karina. really hope they fo far. Thanks for posting!
I’ve been so looking forward to a practice video of JR & Karina, and I’m NOT disappointed! His moves & lines are exceptional at this early stage of rehearsals, and just look at that hand! I’ve a notion the Latin dances are going to be his real forte’. What an inspiration he is!
Thanks for getting all these great vids & articles posted so quickly, Vogue! You’re amazing, too!
Okay its official I am now a huge JR and Karina fan… Thats it, lets get this show rolling.. His dancing is amazing, beautiful, and mesmerizing, his dance moves along with his touching story will be the highlight of premiere night I am sure.
I wouldnt be surprised if this is the year that Karina takes home the MBT…. Finally.
Yep, I said it last week, if he could dance, JR will probably take this baby.
Add to that, warm feelings for Karina who sorta got screwed by the judges last season, and her improvement in creating choreo? Yep, JR is still my frontrunner to win this season.
No one moves as beautifully as Karina, and she has become my favorite female choreographer. I am rooting for her and JR as of now, along with David and Kym and perhaps a few others. We all know that can change though
Well said All!!!! Well said!
J and Sherry YW and thank you!!!xxx
Evaine, I’m really hoping you are right, that if he can dance, they will win. I would love to see Karina win, especially after they way the judges treated her & Ralph last season. She’s my favorite female pro.
Dannngggg, He’s one of these people like say Hines, Jennifer, Kyle, etc in the since that dancing and the beautiful lines just comes naturaly. His story is more inspiring everytime I see him and these two might be my favorites…Im just now getting over the WTA Cha Cha, Bruno talking to Karina extremely rude, Ralph getting screwwd over in Chelsea and Mark’s favor, etc So I really hope the judges be fair with them or else im sure America will be very PO’d ” Pieved off
“. If the judges dont screw them and he’s as good as he looks, they have a GREAT shot at the MBT I think. Vogue, thank you so much for this post and all the hard work you’ve been doing on the media, interviews, etc ” and ALL of u, bloggers!! ” It’s very much appreciated. I assure you.
Thanks Zach and I pray the judges are fair this season too! I hate thinking about who they plan to pick on next.
Oh yeah, JR is a major contender! Yippee!!!!
Love the article, his wonderful attitude, and the natural talent we’re seeing in that video. There’s a sense of confidence and fluidity in his movement that’s lovely to watch. As others have said, to have those lines this early in rehearsals is marvelous! Sounds like picking up choreo isn’t a problem for him either.
This season is looking better and better every day! Is it Sept. 19 yet?
Karina will always be my hero. I don’t care if she has the mirror ball trophy or not. For me, she will always be one of the best dancers in the world.
JR, you are also my hero now!
JR looks really good in the video , I hope they go far .
Well, I can tell you, if JR outlasts Ricki and Derek, he and Karina will likely get my votes. Love both of them.
Totally agree withyou, M. Zin. They look great together!
I totally agree, M. Zin! Karina will always be a champion/hero to me, too.
I hope it is okay to post this here (if not, please remove it), but I created a Facebook page to support JR and Karina. If anyone wants to join, here’s the link.
