DWTS Season 13, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
Week 2 already and we have the Quickstep and the Jive. Whoever had Cha Cha last week has Quickstep this week and whoever did V. Waltz last week has Jive this week. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m scared for Chynna, Hope and Ricki doing Jive. Chynna and Ricki are older and both have issues that might make them have trouble with this dance; Chynna is tall and long limbed and sometimes the Jive doesn’t come off so well and Ricki is shorter but may have stamina issues. Hope is so gangly and athletic; it was well disguised in the V. Waltz, but I don’t know about this one. It will really require that she let go. I don’t think Rob will do that well at it either. Quickstep?? Hmmm…should be interesting. It *should* favor Kristin and Elisabetta – and the latter needs the help. The rest?? Could go either way, I think.
ETA: Thanks to our readers for their help with this last dance order update!

I can’t wait! Bring this show on!!! I can’t see Rob doing a Jive the most from those you listed. I hope he’s picked to go so bad.
Vogue:
I was worried about Jennifer Grey doing the jive last year, derek knows what their limits are. I am sure he will know how to choreograph this. Jesus, I don’t know even I could do the jive, its something you have to be born with I guess. I looks more difficult than the jitterbug and faster!
I feel like week two is always the make or break week. It really seperates the group into the good dancers, the soon to go dancers, and the good but not great dancers. I really hope that Chyna does good and so does Ricki. Derek did a good jive w jennifer gray and she was an older woman so I think she shouldn’t have a problem. Tony’s jives are always fun and I think he will cater to Chyna’s strenghts (which seen to be her great personality and footwork based on week one performance). I really hope that Rob goes home this week. Not only does his interactions with Cheryl seem awkward but he really is not good at all. I want Nancy to do good and I think she is going to do ten times better than she did last week. J.R. should be great as should David (and David has the best jive choreographer on the show KYM). Kristin is a wildcard for me. Idk what to make of this non-attitude Kristin since she seems to have dialed down her persoanality (saying thta she has more personality than Audrina did though). Chazz is either going to do really good or really bad. Thinking back to seasons past, larger men don’t usually do well w quickstep.
Ricki has shown concern for the Jive in interviews, but Derek is staying cool as a cucumber on how the jive is going for them. But I think it better to get the jive over and done with early on. Kirstie couldn’t handle the jive even at the midway point of the competition after she had several weeks to build stamina. If I had to hazard a guess though, I am wondering if Derek would choreograph a more theatrical and entertaining jive to cover Ricki’s weaknesses (like he did for Lil Kim) because Ricki is a performer and I bet she can show huge personality for the more cheeky and fun dances. As long as Ricki can sell it on Mon night, I am sure she’ll do fine. =)
david’s song is fast!
I really think those who got Viennese waltz & jive the first 2 weeks have got the harder dances – both are a lot more physically taxing than cha-cha & quickstep. Viennese waltz is the fastest of the ballroom dances, and jive is the fastest of the Latin dances – in addition, both require a lot more core strength to do correctly than most of the other dances. Those who can do both successfully this early on will likely do well thus season, methinks.
Rob doing the jive??? More like half-assing the jive. I will be surprised if his feet even come off the ground. And hopefully someone will muzzle Khloe.
LOL!! Let’s hope Courtney!!
Seriously if either Khloe, Kourtney or Kim shout across the dance floor once again, they should be asked to leave. Very unprofessional!
Well, the good thing is – it’s only week 2 and unless they really seriously hose Chynna, Ricki and Hope on scores, all three should have some staying power due to votes. It is good to get this dance out of the way early, when there are far worse dancers still around. So, I guess I don’t really worry about Ricki from that respect, but I think that people like Chynna, Elisabetta and Kristin better get really good scores – those three seem a bit like non-entities to me. Say what you want about Ricki talking about her weight – but she does have a fanbase AND a story. Those other three ladies could be Audrina’d.
Elisabetta may hold on due to the Maks fans – but at some point that’s going to be a liabillity to one of them. If Elisabetta gets a really bad score and Maks fans feel like they have to throw more votes her way?? Hope better hope she has a GREAT score.
I agree with Heidi that Elisabetta and Kristin should do better. I thought the judges were a bit nice to Kristin about her cha cha. I think they will do the same again with the quickstep.
As for Ricki and Chynna, I worry for them too. But I hope they have the fans to get them by this week. At least they get it over with early. Also neither have Mark as a partner. He has his good moments but even when good, he always out danced his partners.
I expect the quicksteps to be better tomorrow but the jives might surprise.
I wonder if they are going to give Ricki a song from hairspray for her jive? I was watching the movie the other day and immediately thought that “Ladies Choice” or “You Can’t Stop the Beat” would be great for her jive.
Vin:
If Ricki should make it to the finals, don’t you think Derek would use “You Can’t Stop the Beat” for their Freestyle?
I really think they will make it to the finals!
Margaret, I actually think using that song would be a pretty bad idea – it was used by Mya & Dmitry for their disasterous Hairspray-themed freestyle in season 9. I sincerely doubt Derek would use a song & theme that has already been done (and failed). Plus people are already expecting them to do a Hairspray freestyle, just like they were expecting Jennifer & Derek to do a Dirty Dancing freestyle. If they do make the finals, I think Derek will switch it up for their freestyle – he doesn’t strike me as the type to go for the easy, expected theme.
Courtney:
As usual you’re right, I am thinking about it, and it makes sense. Derek is known to have the best freestyles, so I am sure he’ll come up with something original and wonderful!
When he and Jennifer did “Do you love me” that was totally he’s idea! Jennifer gave him total credit for that and as usual he came out fantastic. The guy is just beyond brilliant!
I’m not that worried for Chynna’s Jive at all, it suits her personality well – her fan base, I can’t speak to. I’m much more worried for Hope’s and David’s and Rob’s jives, hopefully they managed to pick up the moves and the attitude of the dance.
I was petrified before Jenn did the Jive. Sure she looked great, about 35 but I was scared to death. The jive can kill a fit and much younger person. But I hope Ricki puts all her faith in Derek and I imagine he has a plan, I seriously think if the pros have input into which order they do the dances, that he chooses this one thinking they will have enuf fan base to carry them on if disaster occurs. I have high hopes for Rickis jive. Not so sure about Chynna and Hope, both have issues. Also think Kristen could have complications with the quickstep.
I thought Jennifer’s freestyle was brilliant. Derek picked a song where Baby did not dance and the watermelon scene is iconic too. Also the song, the lyrics, captured her journey. I remember Jennifer said the original idea was for her to have the white shirt and Jean skirt a la Baby but she decided no. It is all Jennifer in the end. Anyway Derek went with the unexpected and it was brilliant. Same with Nicole. He can dance hip hop and they could have done that but instead went to show off all the new dances she learned and loved the little salsa in their freestyle.
I doubt they will give Ricki a hairspray song. But I do hope they got a good one. I really want to see Derek handle all the new themes this season. He is so creative.
To me, the Quickstep looks like the hardest dance of all. The steps would seem to be very difficult to maintain while in the close hold/full torso contact the judges want to see. It’s high energy while the footwork is so very specific. Jen & Derek’s Quickstep was positively classic – worthy of Fred & Ginger – but one tiny misstep by Jen cost them 10s. For a skilled pro (like Derek), a misstep in the Jive might be easier to cover up and make it look like part of the choreo.
Rob would have to come a long way to loosen up enough for the jive. Frankly, I hope he doesn’t. But the ones I’m most concerned for are Elisabetta, Nancy and Chaz with their Quicksteps.
Either way (Quickstep or Jive), this looks like a tough week for everyone. Both dances are up-tempo, energetic, lots of movement – stamina is going to be an issue. Courtney’s explanation makes sense, though – slight advantage to the Quicksteppers, though I’m most worried about Nancy & Chaz with regard to stamina.
And Rob??? He looked so stiff last week, I wonder… instead of jiving, maybe he’ll just try “planking” for 1:30? That might actually be more entertaining than watching him dance!
I hope that after this week, DWTS will become a Kardashian-free zone.
I am so looking forward to Rob’s jive. I cannot imagine how bad this is going to be. If he could get about half drunk, he might be able to get it right…but I think it will be, by far, the worst dance of the night.
I do think that Val is probably overall, a better dancer than Maks is but he just doesn’t have that “It Factor” that Maks has. Maks just has that sparkle that Val lacks. So, unless Elisabetta completely screws up this time, she and Val will be safe this week.
It isn’t said enough… YOU GUYS/GIRLS ARE THE BEST!!!!
Thanks for the info and keeping us all updated!
I agree the people with the V. Waltz and Jive have the harder dances but I also agree it’s good to get it out of the way now when the stakes aren’t so high. I think Nancy, Elisabetta, and Kristin will improve. Chaz could go either way, and Carson will be hillarious as always but idk about his dance quality.
For the Jive I think J.R, David, and Chynna will all do well. David is SO goofy the Jive suits him great, J.R is young, fit, great dancer, also goofy. He’s good to go. On Chynna I ditto Buttercup. At first I was worried for her but after hearing her interview and her saying she;s not nervous ” always a good sign ” im not nervous for her. She is in great shape and has a bubbly sweet personalilty on top of having good footwork. Buttercup called it for me. D Ricki may not be in the best shape but ya know what she is so determined and hardworking ” half the battle ” on top of being fun and just a ball of joy and excitment I think she could suprise us.
Btw I dont get the concern on Chynna’s ” lack of? ” personality If there is any or maybe im just not understanding. She had as much personalilty as anybody as far as im concerned on top being down right sweet and endearing. A month ago I didn’t even know who she was and she sure charmed me fast.
Rob has a uphill battle tomorrow, I think, and Hope im curious to see I hope ” heh heh ” she does well just cause I think her and Maks are awesome together and she’s preeettttyyyy, but we shall see tomorrow.
Actually, i am concerned what Ricki doing the jive too. Derek owns the jive…his body seems to be designed for that dance…but for Ricki might just be a little to much a little too soon. I trust Derek will create a choreography that makes the best of Ricki (as he normally/always succeed
). i think Elisabetta, Rob and Nancy will definitely have issues. Nancy would better keep up with her hot leprechaun, or else… JR will be (at least) good because he is very coordinated and doesn’t have stamina issues. Hope will surely have an advantage doing the Jive: stamina -checked, feet power – checked, Maks – checked, coordination – that is something i worry about, but it won’t be as hard for her as last week. And she won the judges already with not such a great waltz – so i expect a good score. Chynna … the viennese waltz suited her very well, the jive ..not so much…she has ballet grace, but for me, seems to lack the power in the feet…and then stamina could be a problem. Kristin- she has the age and the fit body working for her..it’s all on Mark’s hand…and he is a risk taker. Chaz…it would be an interesting quickstep to watch, because i doubt that he can pull it off…even though Lacey works magic … she really is not Harry Potter now.and then Carson – it will be a hard one to sell, but i think that, somehow, he will manage…i liked his cha-cha and technically it wasn’t a good dance. so … people, bring your best game forward!!!
David’s V. Waltz was a fast song too for that dance.
I think both dances are equally challenging. And I think there will be a few couples that really will struggle this week. I think Chaz, Carson, Ricki, Hope, Rob, and even Kristin will be disappointing in their performances.
Chynna, David, JR, Elisabetta, and Nancy will do okay. Just my opinions though.
I love Nancy and Tristan’s song!
Maksim twitted:
“Just a quick shout out to the most important part of @hopesolo and me….our fans! You guys are our support system and we love you! THANK U!”
I think it seems his jive with Hope is not working as good as it should…
Zach, weren’t you also charmed by Audrina??
This isn’t about whether you like someone or not, it’s about whether they are making a significant impact with the audience.
@carlos. Maybe. On the other hand, he might just be giving “the troops” a pep talk since there are now two Chmerkovskiys who need votes. He knows his fans are also a big part of Val’s voting base, and he wants both himself and Val to stay on the show. As Heidi reminded us, vote splitting is a dangerous thing. I’m sure Maks is savvy enough to know that and he also knows his fans are doing it. So it’s definitely in his interest to secure his base.
I was drawn to Audrina because she was hot to be frank Miss Heidi
I’m charmed to Chynna because of her personality and likeabililty factor and she IS an attractive older woman, also.
By the looks of it Chynna is really growing on poeple just from the sights ive seen and the people that were wowed by her. Just in fans ive talked too i’ve heard equally as much Chynna support as, say, Ricki Lake.
@Shep – All the dances are hard in some respects, and easier in others – but from a strict teaching standpoint, most instructors will agree that Viennese waltz (either American or international style) is one of the dances that you wait to teach beginners until they have a good grasp of waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep – which is why it always boggles my mind when they have the celebs doing it the first week
It’s got the fastest tempo of the ballroom dances (180 bpm, compared to the quickstep’s tempo of about 48-52 bpm), and you have to have a decently strong core in order to get the technique right and keep yourselves from getting behind the beat. One way to spot a novice Viennese waltzer from a mile away: they’re usually the ones taking wide steps and seemingly rushing to get around their partner on the turns…while gasping for breath. Since they haven’t yet learned to use their core to help them move more efficiently, they tend to exert themselves just rushing around to keep up. The quickstep (along with the tango and waltz) is usually one of the first dances taught to beginners, since the basic movement is pretty easy (two slow steps forward or back, followed by a closure of the feet on the “quick quick” and a quarter turn to the left or right). Another advantage to the quickstep: it’s really just a sped-up foxtrot, so if a student knows one, it’s easier to learn the other. But you are right, at the higher levels the quickstep does get harder, since most struggle with maintaining a good frame with all the activity going on with the feet.
As for the jive – the big disadvantage about it is not only the speed (178 bpm), but like the VW, it’s another dance that requires a good amount of core technique in order to not get completely winded and worn out. And the technique is not like any of the other Latin dances, so there’s not a lot of parallels to draw. Cha-cha is much easier for a beginner to learn – in fact, it’s usually the first Latin dance taught to beginners, followed by the rumba, since the two have basically the same movement, just sped up or slowed down.
The fact that the disparity in difficulty between the two sets of dances (cha-cha & quickstep vs. Viennese waltz & jive) is so great makes me wonder if there’s some thought put into what couple gets what…
Thanks 4 explaining that Courtney. This interesting coz when they had Walz & ChaCha…usually chachas got better scores. This time V. Waltzes got better scores. I wonder if this has to do with celebs or dances.
As I’ve said numerous time, “All my friends say so…” is evidence of nothing and is annecdotal.
@Maddy – I wonder if the judges may take into account that the Viennese waltz is harder than the cha-cha, and thus score it more leniently. I’d say the regular, slow waltz is maybe a tad easier than the cha-cha (easier to fake ballroom technique than Latin technique!) and that’s why the judges have scored it harder in the past.
Rob & Cheryl going 5th? Iiiiinteresting. That could either suck for them (if 6th position is the top of the 2nd hour) or it could be good for them (if 5th position is the top of the 2nd hour). As much as I hate it, I’m leaning towards the latter – I have a feeling he’s got that hot mess appeal that’s a ratings grab, especially after the spectacle that the Kardashians made last week while Rob was getting his scores. Makes me wonder who’s going first and who’s got the pimp spot…maybe Nancy & Tristan and JR & Karina, respectively?
Love the song David has.
If Derek and Ricky end up doing something from Hairspray it won’t be you can’t stop the beat.
Kristin/mark are dancing 2nd, via her tweet.
Hope & Maks dancing first? Nice. They must be generating a good amount of buzz! But it does kinda make me wonder who got the pimp spot…
Errrr. Kristin & Mark dancing 2nd? That’s not a very good sign
It tells me they likely didn’t create enough “buzz” to even get bumped to the 2nd hour – let alone get one of the 3 coveted spots. I’m honestly a little surprised…I thought they’d at least end up dancing in the second half of the show this week :-/
@Amanda – Agreed – if they do end up doing Hairspray (I’m skeptical) for their freestyle, it won’t be “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. Maybe “Ladies’ Choice”? And I <3 David's song too...remember it from Robert & Miranda’s jive this past season on SYTYCD?
Carson/Anna 6th
I remember Audrina danced first half of the show the whole time she stayed. I think I need to vote extra hard this time.
Actually Maddy Audrina didn’t dance the first half of the show the whole time. She danced last and had the pimp spot on Acoustic Week (Week 4). I checked Wikipedia and noticed the orders mostly had her in the middle (ending of the first hour and beginning of the second hour) except for the first week where she danced first.
I am definitely curious to see how Hope handles the jive. Don’t count her out just because she’s tall and long limbed – remember Evan Lysacek? His jive was great! Not to mention that Maks, himself, is long limbed and tall too. I have no doubt that they’ll be just fine.
I think unless Rob, Elisabetta, and Nancy REALLY step it up this week…1 of them will be in danger of elimination. I’m hoping it’s Rob, mostly because of his attitude and his sisters.
@ Lisa G- hmm! It always felt like Audrina danced early to me.
Anyways, #Vote403
For all you Derek fans…go on over to TMZ.com…just posted some shirtless pics….
@Maddy- Forgot to add that Audrina also did dance first again in Week 6 which was Rock Week. It was also the same week she was eliminated.
Karina just tweeted that she and JR are dancing last.
Karina – 11th
Tony – 9th
Carson and Anna in 6th spot! At the top of the 2nd hour, I bet!
Lacey- 8th
@Courtney of course I do…it ended up in the SYTYCD tour too as a new dance. I’m still trying to figure out what Mark choreographed for it…lol.
Hmmmm, Interesting line up for tonight. Don’t like the idea of Rob going 5th. I guess that Kardashian name had something to do with it. If they are going for Jive then quickstep back to Jive (which is what looks to be appearing), Ricki and David will either go 3rd or 7th with their Jive. I know the 2nd and 3rd spot is usually not the best, so hoping for the best. My guess Elisabetta and Nancy will be either 4th or 10th because they have the Quickstep. Just an assumption though.
Can’t wait to see Chynna and Ricki’s Jive!
I know that us “normal folks” don’t have any idea about things like number of DWTS votes, placement, etc, but I wonder – do the celebs and/or pros get any idea? Or do they have to “read the tea leaves” like the rest of us?
Got to think they can read the tea leaves but play the good employee and not express it.
I wonder if David will go third. Not that it would matter but if Ricki went third, then all of the male celebs are going in the second half.
