DWTS 2011 Kym Johnson: “The Quickstep Could Be David’s dance” (Rehearsal Video)
Access Hollywood went into Kym and David’s rehearsals today. They are sweating it, but, Kym says David is improving and he’s already doing their new Quickstep to music which he usually doesn’t do until Friday.
“He’s really becoming quite the dancer”, says Kym.
David describes the mental challenge versus the physical challenge of it all. He has to be centered, calm, and grounded along with his energy.
Kym talks of how the Quickstep could be David’s dance as long as he doesn’t let the excitement get the best of him.
David also chats about his new TV series with Courtney Cox. I can’t embed these interviews this time, but, you can watch them HERE and HERE.

So did anyone see the video of Kym & Tristan getting close outside a DWTS afterparty the other night, omg they look like they may be together & are holding hands & he gives her a little kiss before getting into the car.
Although I think most ballroom dancers end up hooking up at some point so no shock there! lol
Honestly Lisa, this post is about Kym and David and their dancing!
If Kym and Tristan are seeing one another, so what??
IT’S NO ONE’S BUSINESS BUT THEIR OWN IF IT’S TRUE OR ISN’T!
Vogue, Heidi, Courtney, John – Thanks for letting his site be about DWTS, not a gossip site!
Ok didn’t realize we could not comment about that lol sorry just stating what was being talked about recently.
Also I get it’s their business but no harm in commenting imo. It would come out sonner or later.
Lisa, it’s great to have your favorite dancer(s). We all do, but, we’ve just been noticing that you mostly just gush over Tristan in most of your posts and no matter what post you post in. Instead of so much gushing, we’d love to hear your other thoughts on the posts themselves and other topics.
Magnolia, said it. We may gossip sometimes…but, we’re about “more” than that.
So Lisa, did you watch the videos in the first post? If so, what did you think of the things Kym and David said in them? Do you think the Quickstep could be David’s dance?
I think this is going to be interesting because all 3 couples who have the quickstep have made comments that the QS is going well for them. I’m dying to know the broadway songs that everyone has. I checked out Strictly Come Dancing’s stats on Wiki because they did Broadway week last week and they had 2 QS, one to Kiss Me Kate and the other one…. i don’t remember! LOL!
Vogue/Heidi/Courtney:
Thanks for all the info, you guys are the best!
What do you think about Jennifer Grey filling in for Len Goodman on SCD? I think this is wonderful for her. Do you think Len asked her to fill in or TPTB? I hope we get to see snippets on youtube. What do you think?
I have a feeling that David may do well on the Quickstep. The Quickstep is not one of my favorite dances so it may be a long evening for me. It’s nice that he can remain on such good terms with his ex Courtney. Both working and personal, they seem to have found a healthy balance thats so important when raising a daughter together…
Margaret, I’d love for a former champion to be a “guest judge” on this season of DWTS! I think the judges all need a week off…LOL
Sandy, I agree that David will probably do well with the QS. He seems to have the energy and fun attitude for it. To be honest, he’s my pick for that coveted third (“turd”) spot in the finals.
I agree David for the third spot!
Lovely interviews, Vogue, thanks for finding them for us.
David is really working hard to be calm and centered. With Kym’s help and support, I think he’s getting a handle on it. Good for him!
He seemed very relaxed here and making good eye contact. That should please folks who’ve been kind of creeped out by his darting eyes in other interviews. Hope he continues to keep his focus and pulls off a nifty quickstep on Monday.
This SHOULD be the week where they really start to get hammered about technique, so David best not just go crazy and fast and fun – he better get his feet right as well. And that goes for all of them.
Heidi, I agree they *should* — do you think they will? The stooges are so inconsistent!
Will the quicksteppers get the harshest scrutiny? If so, CA’s “Dark Horse” might get a big boost and Hope might get another chance to move up the leaderboard since cha-cha and rumba are (comparatively) easier. Yes/no??
Hi Cidra. IME, the Rumba can be a doubledged sword. Because it’s slower, it can benefit those that might have good quality of movement but stamina issues with some of the more full-on dances (i.e. Quickstep, Samba, Jive). On the other hand, because it’s so slow, shortcomings in technique and movement can be all the more noticeable. Have a feeling Hope is really going to be on the attack with this week/dance and, as she’s not the most natural/graceful of dancers or comfortable expressing sensuality, this could be a particularly challenging dance for her. OTOH, the Rumba is one of Maks’ strongsuits and he has a history of making his partners shine in this dance. If he can get her to connect with the music and refine her technique, her beauty and athletism could also make make for a stunning presentation here.
As for David, I can see the QS being a nice dance for him if he can maintain nice posture, frame and footwork. While I think most all of this group is going to struggle with two dances (heck most can barely manage one!), I think two dances may actually aid him by providing more structure, focus, outlet and balance for him.
Aww, those were sweet interviews. David is my favorite of this season (and Kym is my favorite pro; holy wow, I want to be her when I grow up) and I’m really glad they were able to stick around long enough to connect with the audience. I agree that he’s looking much more composed now than he had before. Regarding how David’s going to do in the quickstep, though… I honestly didn’t think that Week Two jive that got him in the bottom two for being “frantic” and “lacking technique” was really all that bad. I’ve watched it on YouTube a few times since, and yes, it is majorly lacking polish, but at least David was actually moving. I feel like since they got a scare that week, they’ve been playing it safe by having Kym do most of the work dancing around him. If he’s not going to do much else, then at the very least his frame should be near-perfect, and it wasn’t in there the tango he did last week. Still, I definitely think he deserves to outlast Nancy and Chaz. Man, it’s been so long since I’ve actually had a favorite contestant; is this what it feels like to be invested?
Venus, glad you’ve found a “horse” to back this season! ::LOL::
Since quickstep is all in hold, it seems to me David will have to do a lot more than just hold his frame. Otherwise, it’s going to look like Kym is dragging him around the floor like a sparkly anchor with feet
If hyperactive brain doesn’t short circuit, he should be good. I really hope so, because I do like him.
Wynn, what’s your take on Rob and the cha-cha? I think he’ll get the steps going, although I don’t think there will be a lot of hips involved. What I really can’t see him bringing is the flirty flair to sell the performance.
Hi again, Cidra. I don’t see Rob having the hip action for the faster Latin dances either.
I’m really looking forward to next week.
I love Broadway, so I’m looking forward to seeing which shows they will be dancing to. (and hoping the singers won’t murder the songs)
From the sneak peak of 3 of the costumes on the ABC website it looks like Rob & Cheryl will be dancing to something from “Jersey Boys” and with Tristan’s Medieval Knight costume I’m guessing Nancy and him might be dancing to something from “Spamalot”.
Karina’s dress looks beautiful, but I can’t see from the drawing which show it might be related to.
There ya go, Heidi, imagine Nancy and Tristan doing something from “Spamalot” :::ROFL::: Somehow I can’t see the producers having that good a sense of humor. Now I’d buy “Camelot”, but that’s really digging into the Broadway archives.
I guess it could be “Camelot”, but I think you are right about it being too old. I don’t think many people know about that show.
I can’t think of any other musicals involving knights…
Ah, Gitte – remember, the average DWTS viewer is in the right age bracket for Camelot. Much more so than Spamalot. Now, I’ve seen Spamalot 6 times on Broadway – I would love it if they went with that. Tunic is too short though, to be authentic.
“Kiss Me Kate” maybe?
Gitte, “Spamalot” would be such fun, but I think Evaine is on the money with “Kiss Me Kate”. How about “Always True to You”? I think that would be cute for Nancy and Tristan’s foxtrot.
OMG – Speaking of David.. I just read that his good friend Pee Wee Herman is campaigning to be on next season of DWTS….
Didn’t he get arrested for some inappropriate conduct some years back…
Im sorry, but there is no way in h*ll that I would ever warm up to him… Tell me its not so!!!
I’m so happy to read positive comments on David! When the season started it seemed everyone disliked him so this is a really nice change.
#26….. you don’t have to warm up to every contestant….good thing about FREEDOM, and he’s free to do the show if he wants and TPTB want him. If he was arrested, he was obviously did his time, paid a fine, or charges were dropped…..so what? I’d be more worried about someone like Lindsay Lohan or Charlie Sheen LOL.
I like David more than I thought I would. Or at least more than I did when I first saw a few interviews on late night tv and he seemed…weird…compared to what I thought of him from movies. Once that shock wore off I can appreciate he’s just being himself. Even if he is a really weird guy and has said some off stuff occasionally.
I think that’s what should happen on this show. Getting to know the stars better as people. I don’t get that sense from all of them, but David is definitely being himself.
@cranscape – This is just one gal’s opinion, but I think you’re absolutely right when you said “David is definitely being himself.” And for me, that’s exactly the problem… Every time I watch him in an interview, I find myself thinking “That poor boy – somebody done blowed his pilot light out!”
He’s definitely a character, but to borrow a phrase from Evaine, “Arquettes are an acquired taste.”
@Sally, ::LOL:: I never paid any attention to the Arquettes before this show so David on DWTS is all I know. Definitely can see he’s an acquired taste. For my part, I think he’s kinda sweet; but in small doses. The show and the occasional interview, and I’ve had my fill. Still, I like the way he’s settling down and starting to dance better. So I hope he’s got enough fan support to stick around longer.
What a sweet interview. Kim’s caring, thoughtful and supportive side comes out and its easy to see why she’s such a beautiful person inside and out, and why her male pros do so well under her encouraging instruction. David seemed so less frenetic and more centered and real, which was nice to see. I’ll bet he will do well with the QS because he does have quick foot movements, as long as he can hold it together ant not get too jumpy.
@Cidra – The Arquettes have been in show business for quite some time. Davids Grandfather was Charlie Weaver (Cliff Arquette) corner square on the old Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall and the legendary Paul Lynne was center square. Showing my age ladies!!
I know his sisters act, but I am not familiar with any of their projects. But lets just say, the Arquette family were born with the ‘acting’ genes.
Thanks for the Arquette tutorial, Sandy
I’ve always thought it must be difficult to be “in the family business” when it’s one that involves public scrutiny (whether it be acting, singing, pro sports, etc.) There are certain expectations attached to your “name” and that’s got to weigh on you sometimes. Of course there are advantages too (like doors opening for you that others have to really work to pry open).
Hope David and Kym have a great quickstep on Monday!
