DWTS Season 13, Week 7 – Dancing by the Numbers

Well, as I’ve said before – nights with two dances are dangerous. It’s much easier for a shocking elimination to happen, mainly because the higher the number of judges points handed out, the smaller the margin between dancers.  It’s simple math, really.  A 3 point spread that was a 2 percentage points spread, becomes a 1 percentage point spread.  Danger, danger, Will Robinson!!

Other than the inherent dangers, it was a reasonably good night.  My admiration for Derek Hough grew by leaps and bounds, fully justified by his behavior.  Some fans wondered why TPTB would let Maks randomly trash Derek….turns out they didn’t. 🙂 You best watch yourself, they will get back at you eventually. Of course, Maks made it SO easy.

JR took a tumble and I have to say I agreed with their scoring, sadly. Really, I think the only problem scores of the night were Rob’s – he seemed a bit underscored – And Team Tango.  A disaster Len?? Hardly. It was rather lackluster and lacking some pizzazz, but I think “disaster” is a good bit of hyperbole.

Let’s look at the numbers.

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Ricki 53 18.09
2. Rob 51 17.41
2. Hope 50 17.06
4. JR 48 16.38
4. David 47 16.04
6. Nancy 44 15.02

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS13 Week 7 Power Rankings

Well kids, I’m afraid tonight was a prime example of how theme nights can really sabotage some (or most) of the couples – because I feel that almost every single couple was negatively impacted by their song assignments this week.  Yes, it was kinda “fun” to have a Halloween week – but making the dancing suffer in order to fit theme? No thank you. But praise Jeebus, this week was the final theme week of the season – back to business as usual next week! Well, about as “as usual” as you can get when you’re thisclose to the finale 😉

Thoughts on the team dances: I agree that team paso had the stronger routine of the two, however – I don’t think team tango was as terrible as everyone seemed to think it was.  I think team tango was indeed better in their group sections – everyone managed to stay very in-synch, although there were a few spacing issues; team paso seemed a bit less in-synch when all 3 couples were on the floor at the same time, and it almost seemed like they tried to avoid a lot of synchronized work, which was probably a good idea.  I was also a bit bothered by the fact that team paso seemed to have quite a few spots of what I like to call “empty space” in their dance – moments where, due to the phrasing of the music, they seemed like they were just waiting or stalling until the next accent or big move.  I think team paso better captured the aggressive, haunting feel of both their music and their dance, but probably had the song with the more difficult rhythm; team tango had the song with the easier rhythm, but probably suffered due to the fact that it lacked a lot of the theatricality necessary for the tango.  Team paso was leaps & bounds stronger in the individual sections – Ricki & Derek were their usual showstopping selves, Hope managed to keep up (although I could have done without such a long count of her on the floor while Maks kinda danced around her), and oh man – ROB.  Rob was the MVP of team paso for me – he impressed the hell out of me with the way he kept up not only with Cheryl, but with Maks & Derek as well.  I was shocked at how much better JR looked dancing the tango with his team than he did individually – guess it’s a testament to how a bad song can throw even the best dancers off their game.  David seemed a bit wobbly, but was still looked decent to me; Nancy was clearly the weakest member of team tango, but man – she was out there giving it her all.  Overall, I think the scoring was about right, and likely won’t cause a huge upset when all is said & done tomorrow night.

1.) Ricki & Derek – Alone at the top of the leaderboard once again, and she thankfully did pretty well on a night where everyone seemed to have a bit of a slump.  I must say, I wasn’t completely wowed by her paso; I could kinda tell she wasn’t dancing full-out and seemed to be babying her rib, which I can’t really fault her for – I’ve bruised a couple ribs in the past and was in so much pain I could have sworn that I had collapsed a lung.  I think Derek probably went a bit easier on her with the choreo as well, as it wasn’t exactly the same level of paso genius I’ve come to expect from him.  But once again, when you’re working with a theme like Halloween – you’re kinda forced into thinking inside the box, because they’re expecting something spooky/scary/eerie/etc, and they want to see Halloween archetypes like werewolves, vampires, ghosts, etc.  Add an injured partner on top of that, and you’re pretty limited in what you can do.  Overall, though, a nice effort with a pretty good payoff for these two – I think it will be enough to keep them safe tomorrow night. DWTS 2011 Hope Solo Speaks Out On New Rumors And Her Dancing With The Stars Transformation

Below are some last minute words from Hope Solo before the show. She tells People she doesn’t think there are any hard feelings with Len after Maks had words with him last week. Maks is the only one who has seen her struggles and no one else on the show.

“He’s the only person who has seen my struggles – not the producers, not anybody else – and it’s been a transformation,” Solo tells PEOPLE.

“To put somebody down when they haven’t even recognized how far they’ve come, I think Maks wasn’t okay with that. And he’s a true teammate and he stood up for me and I appreciated it.”

After Len Goodman criticized Solo’s rumba as her “worst dance of the season,” Chmerkovskiy had a heated exchange with the judge.

“I don’t think there are any hard feelings,” Solo said of the controversy. “All the drama makes for good TV.”

More at the People.com link. Below is her reaction to a new Star Magazine article via Reality Tea saying Hope has “had it” with her partner;

I guess she told them. LOL

DWTS 2011 Cheryl Burke “Every week on the show is Halloween anyway”

“Rob Kardashian and I are dancing the tango to something that I think everyone knows. People are going to think it’s fun,” Cheryl Burke blogs at People.com. After practicing two dances all week, Cheryl also writes of having a sore neck, but, she and Rob are ready for tonight’s show. She never thought they’d make it this far which she explains more on below….

I never thought we’d make it this far, but Rob has really proved to everybody that he’s a contender and he knows how to dance. He’s really working hard, and he’s really into it now. The finals could be really hard to get into. That third spot is still up in the air. It could be anyone. Right now it’s like every little thing counts.

Rob is definitely the partner I get along with the most. We just have a lot of fun. There’s not one day that goes by that he doesn’t make me laugh and smile. Normally at this point, you’re tired of each other, but Rob and I never feel that way. We have a great chemistry. We respect each other. We know to have fun with the process.

Wow, I never thought she’d say Rob is the partner she gets along the best with? For more, go here.

DWTS Halloween Dancing preview… A review of Season 3

There were a few ways to review this week, and I went back and forth for a while, trying to decide. I thought about the Halloween dances, and the team dances from the past. Since many of the songs are duplicates, I thought about finding all of the prior dances to those songs. But, my search skills on youtube stink and that failed, so instead, I found the dances from Season 3, Week 8, when they performed on Halloween. And, SOME are duplicate songs for this week!!

So, enjoy these Halloween dances, and GET READY for more great dances tonight!

Addams Family with Joey Lawrence and Edyta Sliwinska dancing Tango

Sympathy For The Devil with Joey and Edyta dancing Paso Doble

DWTS13 Kym Johnson Spills A Few Teasers For Halloween Night!

In a new interview with TV Guide, Kym gives some details for what we can expect of her and David’s Cha Cha as well as the team dances. Her team is calling themselves “Team Money”. She thinks the team dances will be “really close” in scoring which you can read on below. More on David’s challenges and their journey, how she feels on Maks and the judges, etc. at the link.

What do you have in store for Halloween?
Kym Johnson: We’ve got a song that’s kind of Halloween-based. We have the cha-cha and then we’re doing the team tango with J.R. [Martinez] and Karina [Smirnoff], and Nancy [Grace] and Tristan [MacManus]. Team dances are always so much fun. … We’re calling ourselves Team Money. I don’t really know why. It’s from Broadway Week; it’s all about the money. The other team has the paso doble. I think it’s going to be really close between us.

You guys got your highest score for your tango, so David should be comfortable with it, right?
Johnson: Yeah, exactly. That was our best score, so hopefully we’ll be able to do well with that one. We’re trying to work on some movements and fix the little things so hopefully our group score will be even better than our [individual] score. And for the cha-cha, David’s obviously never done that yet. We’ll have to get his hips moving there, getting in the rhythm and all. David has a lot of natural rhythm and a lot of it is trying to get him to harness it.

DWTS13 Week 7 Nancy Grace And Tristan Macmanus Prepare For The Jive (Rehearsal Video)

Nancy tells Access Hollywood how Tristan wants to “change” her in this new rehearsal interview for their Jive tonight. Tristan says he just wishes Nancy would listen more and not take control. The two are funny and full of chemistry as always. There are also some serious moments here too for why she thinks people might be voting for them.

Here are a couple of teasers from Nancy’s You Tube as well….

What a Night For Dance With Me USA’s Fall Fantasy Showcase! (Photos)

As we reported to you in an earlier posting, Val Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Kirstie Alley (along with her dance partner Serge Onik), Daria Chesnokova, and Elena Grinenko all took part in Dance With Me USA’s Fall Fantasy Showcase last night in Brooklyn. According to the Daily Mail this morning, Kirstie “shimmied, shook, and waltzed her way through two energetic performances”. One follower of Kirstie’s that attended the event said Kirstie danced like a champion and Maks would have been proud of her. From the looks of these pictures, I would say go. You can view more photos like these at the Daily Mail link and also at Wire Image.

Kirstie was also given flowers after her dances. Doesn’t she look incredible?

Also at the event was The View’s Sherri Shepherd (who has also been rumored to dance on Dancing With The Stars for several season’s now). Below is a take of her and Val after he “disrobed” for one of his dances. *sigh*

You can see more pictures of the event as well as reading some fun LIVE commentary from Sherri HERE.

What a night! If anyone has any video footage, be sure to let us know.

ADDING: HERE is a video of one of Kirstie’s performances thanks to @DawnMarchioni at twitter. Below is some coverage with Tony for Extra. He interviews Kirstie on the show, her thoughts on Dancing With The Stars Season 13, and more.;
