DWTS Season 14 Rumor: Derek Hough Signed For Next Season Of Dancing With The Stars??
Robin Leech of the Las Vegas Sun interviewed Derek at the 4th Annual Fighters Only World Mixed Martial Arts this past week. In Robin’s interview, he mentions that Derek told him he signed to do the next season of Dancing With The Stars. Doing some checking with Heidi, we don’t think anyone should accept this new information as an official “confirmation” or as “fact” as of yet since (in the past) signings usually don’t begin this early and a lot of things can happen between now and then. When we find out more, we’ll be sure to let you know. For now, read a take below from the interview. Note how Derek talks about his shoulder injury and a little on his new upcoming movie Cobu3D. The link also has some quotes from Cheryl and a video of her and Derek on the White Carpet as well.
Pro champion Derek, who presented Submission of the Year, told me he’s signed on for the next season of “DTWS” that starts in March. He said that he was injured for the first time this season with a dislocated shoulder. “I still feel that,” he admitted. “I now know how the fighters feel. I admire their dedication and discipline — it’s the same as a dancer. There are a lot of similar techniques between the two sports. There’s a lot of dancing in MMA. … I love going to the bouts. I have hopped over to Vegas to watch many of them because my mom has lived here now for 13 years.”
Derek also cleared up my misunderstanding of his years spent here training at Las Vegas Academy. “No, that was Julianne [Hough, his sister]. She was here. I was 10 years in southeast London, but obviously came here many times for family events.” He’s excited about his debut 3D movie “Cobu” that he’s completed filming and will be released in the spring. Like Julianne in “Footloose,” this features him dancing.
Adding: Be sure to check out Pure Derek Hough. Heidi has posted on Derek’s up coming schedule and another rumor out there.
i am not sure about this one too…on one side..i will be thrilled to see him dance again and again…on the other … i would love for him to get involved in other types of artistic activities…and the schedule of DWTS doesn’t allow him that… when he dances…he fills my world with joy and amazement..because i have never seen such a beautiful dancer…not since Gene Kelly at least…but he dances almost 15 years now…and it begins to take its toll on the body. i still hope he will do the best thing for him and for his carrier. i will enjoy it any way!
I think it most likely that he said “probably” again and someone got overzealous. It’s a print interview – what was said doesn’t necessarily match what was written. He also wrote that Derek said he got injured for the “first time” – we know that he’s been to the hospital at least twice before this season, so that’s definitely incorrect.
It’s a same that some websites spread stuff without putting much thought into it. Next thing you know he’ll be dating Nicole…oh, wait. 🙂
Elara, ditto!!
LOL!!! 🙂
Vogue:
I remember Derek saying he appreciated the regular job he had even more after making the movie “Cobu 3D”.. I think that this being an independent movie it does take time for a distributor to pick it up, as you know. I am sure they will. I think he will probably at least do one more season. He will most likely get to promote the movie on it as well. I would love to see him get the 4th MBT.
What do you think the likelyhood of Maks taking a season off? It might do him some good!
There is another question I have for you. Why is it that he of all people never opened a dance studio? He is an amazing teacher!
I’d love to see Derek dance again and get another Mirror Ball too.
I don’t think he’ll take off and TPTB are probably still going to want him on the show for how much attention he garnishes for the show (good and bad). Plus, he gets people talking.
I have no idea. Personally, I think he has other interests, hasn’t had the time, and/or doesn’t want that kind of responsibility in his life right now? He’s said in a recent interview that he’s interested in directing Broadway. Maybe he’ll go in that direction someday? Heidi would know more on all of this than I. Whatever Derek does, he’ll be a success at it imo since he doesn’t go half way on anything. I also don’t think we will see him quit dancing all together if we don’t see him on DWTS. Dancing in his entire being. We’ll just see him dancing in other ways…in movies, etc.
Vogue:
Still say that if there is ever a bio pic in the making of Red Astaire or Gene Kelly he is the man!
Can’t picture anyone else pulling off those moves!
Sorry you know I meant Fred Astaire!
That would be really cool. I’d love that as well. 😉
Cobu already has distribution – Lionsgate. Also SM Entertainment (?) for Asia.
I hope Derek is done with DWTS, but I doubt I’ll get my way. I’m also not so sure that Maks is a lock – we’ve never seen him and his partner kept off most of the shows after elimination (Kimmel, GMA, others) like he was this past season. Personally, I think he needs a rest more than anyone. I think he’s just about promoting his studios now, which is fine, but he was much too bitter about the show this past time. He pretty much tarnished the season for me and I could certainly live without him on the show anymore.
Derek opening a dance studio?? Again, I think people think to small where he’s concerned. Maks doesn’t just have a studio, he has a small empire.
Not “directing Broadway”, Vogue….directing AND Broadway. I don’t think he’s limiting himself and I do think we’ll see him in more movies.
Margaret, you really shouldn’t believe everything you read. If you did, you would get dizzy because every article has Derek saying something different. He’s also said he would love to do more movies.
I loved the old classic movies and the classic movie stars of that genre, they were in leagues all their own. I would love to have a gifted dancer like Derek get a chance to fill those shoes.
Oh, how I love the sounds of this Heidi!!
There is a new french movie that is a silent film that is getting a lot of Oscar buzz. Reason I am bringing this up is because it seems that Hollywood is willing to look back to move forwards and that might mean more quality musicals and movies with dance numbers like the Fred Astaire/Gene Kelly movies. We all know that Derek LOVES cinema and I wouldn’t be surprised if was an autodidact of film. Nor would I be surprised if Derek went to school for directing. IMO, Derek will always have one foot in choreography/dancing and the other foot in whatever he wants to pursue, whether it be directing, acting, music, art.
Personally, elmari, I hope he learns about directing from doing a lot of ACTING. 🙂 He has movie star written all over him and I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t go in that direction, ultimately. But…it’s his career.
Heidi, I agree. I don’t see him committing to DWTS this early. Derek has the “IT” Factor. The possibilities are endless. 🙂
Heidi:
Wouldn’t you take him saying “that he signed up for season 14 of DWTs as a more of a yes than no?”
I think he is destined to be a major movie dancing star since the days of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. I do believe that he is and can be a major star. I still say also that no one can pull the moves off in the DD remake better than him.
I hope for Maks sake and everyone elses that he does take a season off. He was a big turnoff this season. I never saw him with such an attitude.
Heidi I didn’t know Derek’s film had Lionsgate as a distributor, this is good news! Believe me I don’t believe everything I read! That’s why I confirm everything with you guys, the most informative site there is! He’ll probably talk about the film on Live with Kelly tomorrow!
No, Margaret – we don’t actually know he said that!! Why do people believe every single thing they read?? This article also claims that Derek said he was injured for the first time this season – and we KNOW that isn’t true. Come on.
I don’t think Maks will take time off, nor do I think TPTB would want him to. He gives them a reality tv element they crave imo. As for his small empire, he’s the face of DWM, but I seriously doubt he’s majority owner.
As for Derek, I only became a fan this season, but have to say he totally won me over with his choreography. No ringer this time, just pure genius. I also believe he has a lot more reach than DWTS, and apparently has good mentoring. He’s not jumping at anything that comes along. People in the business will have a hard time not noticing him if he continues on this path.
You should go back and watch Derek and Lil’ Kim, Ali – she wasn’t a ringer either, nor was she fantastic (just good, with personality)….but he really got some great dances out of her. I loved her. I liked all his partners, really – I also liked him with Joanna, but she was not a skilled dancer. He used a lot of similar moves with her and really hid her weaknesses well. I think his partnerships with Lil’ Kim and Joanna show very very well what he can do with people who aren’t naturals and they show that he really knows how to work this show.
Just saw Derek on Live with Kelly! He was awesome good! A natural! Sure hope he’s on again!
