Argentinean DwtS Brings More Than Just Dance To The Floor (Videos)
Do you recall in last season’s off season when PureDWTS reader Carlos Lustosa updated us on Dancing With The Stars in Argentina? He kept us up to speed on Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood’s dancing. He also introduced us to some of the other cool dance talents at the time which you can read about here again if you like. Now Carlos is back to give us more fun updates on Dancing With The Stars in Argentina which is continueing to stun audiences. Note the differences in how they do Dancing With The Stars in Argentina versus how they do the show in the United States. You’ll also notice they get a little more …uhhh “risque” (is this a good word to describe?
) in their dancing. It’s quite interesting and Carlos has this special way of taking us up, close, and personal. Enjoy and be sure to watch all the videos he’s attached. If you are like myself, it will be well worth your time especially if you are a lover of dance in general and how other cultures influence it, etc. Feel free to tell Carlos your thoughts and ask any questions if you have any. Carlos, from all of us at Pure Dancing With The Stars, we thank you for taking the time to update and report on the show from Argentina for us and we can’t wait for you to tell us how the competition turns out. So, without further ado, here’s Carlos….
Argentinean DwtS Brings More Than Just Dance To The Floor
Hello guys, I’m Carlos, a Brazilian fan of DwtS, but I’m here to talk about the Argentinean version of the show we love. Some of you may have read the comments I wrote that became posts that Vogue published about Bailando, when I talked about Pamela Anderson’s participation and some peculiarities about this show, that is, at fact, a part of the Showmatch, a variety TV show with a tone we call “Popularesco” – which would be geared towards the masses and the content would be full of innuendos… well, think “Jersey Shore”). This said, let’s talk about the dance they do in Argentina. Así se baila en Bailando:
Well, the show premiered on May 17th and will end in a couple weeks from now. Yes. Almost eight months. Do you think it’s too much? Wait till you learn that there are 36 couples who compete during the entire season. 30 couples started, 6 quit (Pamela Anderson and Mike Tyson, amongst them) and were replaced. There was a gay actor paired with a male pro, a “couple” that consisted of two sisters, and one of the celebs is a dwarf lady (my favorite dancer!). Now, the dances: there are a lot of them, of course, some of them as crazy as it can be, and many are very “freestyled”. In fact, some aren’t really a style of dance but named after a prop that you have to use while you are dancing. I’m going to list below the styles the couples danced this season and the huge, and when I say huge I mean HUGE, list of the dances that have appeared on the show during its seven seasons. As example, I’ll try to use the videos of my favorite contestant, the Dwarf singer, Noelia Pompa, and her partner Hernán Piquin. Now, tell me: isn’t she incredible? =]
Note: As David Arquette joked on Jimmy Kimmel about the steamy flavor the Argentinean version of DwtS has, some videos are – how can I say? – NOT kid-friendly, and NOT suitable for work. =p (I’ll let you know which ones)
1- Pop Latino – No big deal here. It’s a freestyle dance to a latin/latin-singer song.
2- Cha Cha Cha
3- Adagio – Similar to Rumba because it’s slow and romantic, but it’s more like freestyle. And you are allowed to do lifts.
4- Axé – This is when Pamela Anderson quit. Axé is a Brazilian street dance that may be similar to aerobics and, traditionally, it’s danced as the song ask you to do some moves. Example: “Put the hands on your knees, get down, shake your booty, etc).
5- Reggaeton – Puerto Rican hip hop
6- Cumbia – Remember Cuban salsa, which is different from the salsa in line (the sisters Escudero. Starts at 3:50) NOT kid-friendly, and NOT suitable for work! but very creative.
7- Baile del Caño – Pole Dancing Noelia.
8- Adagio Latino – Same Adagio danced to Latin songs
9- Cuarteto – Argentinean dance, musically similar to Merengue.
10- Disco
11- Strip Dance – Yes, strip dance. NOT kid-friendly, and NOT suitable for work!
12- Electro Dance
13- Merengue
14- Videoclip – Basically, the couples do a freestyle while a video clip is shown on the background
15- Aquadance – hahahaha love this one. They put a set of four transparent pools with slides and the couple has to dance and dive on them.
16- Árabe – Arabian. Not belly dance, but similar.
17- Bailando bajo la lluvia – Dancing in the rain. A freestyle with a lot of water falling from the “sky”.
18- Adagio de Novela. Adagio with Soap opera themes.
19- Homenaje a Gilda y Rodrigo – Tribute to Gilda and Rodrigo (This one I had to research) Well, Gilda was a very popular singer in Argentina who died on a car accident on 1996. Rodrigo was also a very popular singer of cuarteto who died also on a car accident, in 2000. The couples had to pick one song from their repertoire to dance to, as homage. The story is sad, but the songs are very upbeat and sexy.
20- Cuarto Giratorio – Rotating room. There’s this room that rotates while the couples dance a kind of freestyle. It’s strange, but I kinda liked it. LOL. Can you imagine this on DwtS? (sexy, but it’s allowed, I think)
21 – Música de Películas – Movie themes
22- Salsa Acrobática – Acrobatic Salsa. Good stuff.
23- Semifinal night 1 – (not aired yet) – Two out of four couples are going to dance four styles, competing for a place on the finale.
24- Semifinal night 2 – (not aired yet) – Last two couples dance their four styles.
25- Finale – Not announced yet.
Here’s the complete list of all styles danced on the seven seasons of Bailando (original name: Bailando por un sueño), according to Wikipedia. (Sorry, I haven’t watched Bailando since the first season…) I’ll try to translate some of the names of them:
Adagio, Adagio de Novelas, Adagio Latino, Aero Dance, Amor (Love – I have no idea what is this dance about, but I think it’s just a dance with romantic flavor), Aquadance, Árabe, Axé, Bailando bajo la lluvia, Bailando bajo la Nieve (Dancing in the Snow), Bailes Latinos (Latin Dances), Beat Nacional (National Beat), Canto al Amor Imposible (Sing to Forbidden Love), Cabaret, Country, Cuarteto, Cuarto Giratorio, Cumbia, Cha cha chá (latin, cuban), Cha cha chá de Ballroom (Ballroom cha cha), Chamamé (Mexican dance), Charlestón (Charleston), Disco, Electro Dance, Fantasía (Fantasy – no idea, perhaps costumes?), Flamenco, Folclore, Hip Hop, Homenaje a Rodrigo y Gilda, Infantil (Children’s songs), Jazz, Jive, Lambada, Lujuria (Lust – it could be Edyta’s dance…”less is more” LOL), Mambo, Merengue, Milonga (kind of fast and fun tango), Movida Tropical (Tropical Move), Música callejera (Street music), Música Caribeña (Caribbean music), Música de Argentina (Argentine Music), Música de Películas, Oro del Pop (Pop Goldies), Paso Doble, Pole Dance, Pop Latino, Reggaeton, Reyes del Pop (Pop Kings), Rock & Roll, Rumba Flamenca (it’s the style the Gipsy Kings play), Salsa, Salsa Acrobática, Samba de Ballroom (Ballroom Samba), Strip Dance, Swing, Tango, Valsa, Videoclip, Waltz.
One interesting thing is the fact is that none of the couples danced the Tango yet on this season.
If I may, I just wanna say a big thanks to my friend Renata and all the DwtS brazilian fans on our Facebook and Orkut group. =]

Carlos, I just love Noelia. I’d love 8 months of DWTS too!!
Amazing dances, but I can’t imagine many of them on DWTS except maybe as freestyles.
LOL
Just imagine Len’s reaction to that strip dance
I love the aquadance – it would be great if they could do that on DWTS.
Thank you very much, Vogue. Hope you guys like it too. =]
I love this girl Noelia, she’s so inspiring. The week she danced the acrobatic salsa, they showed a video of her family talking about her. Very emotional. They love her so much… she lost her dad at 14, close from her 15th birthday party, that in our latin culture is very important. On spanish-language countries it’s called quinceañera and represent that the girl grew up and it’s not a child anymore. Very important momento to the girls. She cried a river… =]
When Bailando ends I’ll let you know who wins… =]
I’m rooting for Noelia, of course. =]
Can’t wait, Carlos! And Noelia is just the tops. I love her heart and how genuine she is…and she can dance too. I love it when people don’t let a handicap get in the way.
Gitte, so true about Len. He couldn’t handle it!! lol
Thanks for all the info and video clips Carlos. 8 months!!! OMG!! I thought the water dance was really cool and interesting. I’m puzzled by the rotating room dance. How in the world did they do that?? Len would DIE if they did those ‘NSFW’ dances on DWTS!
I love Noelia too. She’s a great dancer.
I like the video clip one, it sounds cool. They should do that in the finale next year, and instead of doing freestyle with it in the background, it could be with their favorite dance. The video could be about the couple’s journey throughout the season, like the season 12 finale when Sara Evans came back and sang.
@Dwtsfreak this is an example of Videoclip dance… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIeoJ67fWAA
Carlos, you’re famous! Thanks for the shout-out at the end of the post. <3
Noelia rocks! She's fabulous, always has sharp, clean movements. Love her, hope she wins!
The rotating room was probably inspired by Fred Astaire's routine in Royal Wedding (1951)
http://www.bigfott.com/Astaire_Unwound.html
hahahaha Renata… =] thank you for your help =]
loved this Fred Astaire video!
Interesting stuff. I kinda want to see the American version do the rotating room dance though. I can totally see Len’s eyes bugging out of his head with the other dances lol. Bruno would love them though.
Also, I would love the show to do something similair to the Homenaje a Gilda y Rodrigo – Tribute to Gilda and Rodrigo. I can totally see the show honoring Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse or some other artist that is no longer alive in that manner. If I would have to choose I would say MJ though.
Haha! Carlos is amazing!
The american DWTS really should bring Noelia as a special guest on those AT&T numbers, or even Macy’s Stars of Dance
good lord, what is this show, haha. the American public would freak out over some of these routines.
I’ll hand it to the Argentinians, they’re creative but definitely not shy.
i’m really impressed with noelia as well.
Vin: that would be great, but I would prefer it not being MJ.
How about the all time greats: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Ann Miller etc.
Carlos, I’m Brazilian too and I would love if we also had DWTS here in Brazil. But I would let all that freedom of expression only to Argentina. I prefer the United States format.
However, Argentinean DWTS is hilarious and entertaining with all this confusion of creativity. This “cuarto giratorio” is sensacional! Really really good!
Charlie youre the very best!! Almost as good as Noelia LOL
Love you and your comments!!!
Now that youre almost a rock star send a Hi to me!
Thanks to Carlos and Vogue for doing a post on this! I can’t believe the show last 8 months, starts with 36 couples, and has all these crazy and extremely risque and death-defying dances! I think the rotating room was the most interesting… And I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Derek do that strip tease dance or that aqua dance… LOLOLOLOL!!! As long as he had a sexy partner to keep up with him…. or could he just do it by himself?! I am wondering, do they get more than a week to work on their dances? It just seems like they are doing longer routines and some hard “dances”… like that pole-dancing one… You need a lot of strength to do that!
Carlos and Renata.. You’re amazing!! Noelia (ANALÍCIA).. Stunner Woman litlle for the winner!!! Uhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
A big hugs for you!!
Lucas, I’m with you! Noelia on DwtS! ahahaha
Susana, LOL love you =]
M. Zin, we have Dança dos Famosos at Faustão… well… nevermind… hehe
Gitte, Vin – I’d love to see this. Stars of pop and Dance Movies =]
Elmari, started with 30 couples! Six was replaced =] Yes, to the pole dancing they started training kid of three weeks before the show… and because of these couples, there was a rotation: the couple danced a week and took the other week off.
I don’t know if it happens in Argentina, but here in Brazil (Dança dos Famosos), the “pros” don’t do the choreography. There are choreographers who do this, and the couples just dance. It’s hard to explain, but the almost all pro girls have not formation on ballroom dance.
You’re amazing Carlos e Renata…
Noelia ( ANALÍCIA or NOÉLÍCIA…) for the win…
Aahahhahahaha
Hugs!
Hmmm, I don’t know, but, this is sounding very interesting!
I’m looking for a strip dance with Edyta! Oh, wait… hehehe
Isaias, you helped a lot too =] thank you and all the DwtS brazilian fans!
Carlos, I want our DWTS in the same format as the United States. I want a super production with the best ballroom dancers we have. I can’t watch Faustão and his modest production.
I want to continue dreaming…
M. Zin, I totally agree. And Globo (Faustão’s TV Station) CAN do this. I really want Dança dos Famosos as a show, not just a part of Faustão. And, please, real ballroom pros. I really want to see the dances we dance in Brazil danced great. Can you imagine how incredible could be a lambada, forró, zouk, samba, bolero, soltinho with good pro dancers?
@Gitte: They would be a cool theme too. The only reason I said MJ is because I was trying to think of people who had music that suited both latin dances and ballroom dances.
Also, I was thinking about it and I think that Bailando bajo la lluvia is probably the coolest one. I think that should be on the U.S. version.
That was really interesting to see, Carlos! Thanks for all your obvious hard work on this post. Call me a prude but I kind of like “keeping something to the imagination” so I’m pretty pleased with our version but I will give the Argentinean’s their props for creativity and imagination (and all out bravery), that’s for sure!!!
Hello! I’m from Argentina. I had searched for world repercussions of this show (in english).
I want to tell you that Noelia Pompa and Hernan Piquin are the champions of Bailando por un Sueño last night.
Greetings!
Thanks Pablo. Carlos is going to write something up on this. Stay tuned.
I HATE this show, and all the Latin American versions of DWTS, like Bailando por un Sueño, Campeonato Internacional de Baile, etc..
I’m venezuelan, and I tell you, the venezuelan versions of the show (Bailando con los Gorditos, Bailando con las Misses or Bailando con los viejitos) are sooo boring with all those weird dances such as Reggaeton, Cumbia, and many others that don’t have any kind of technique at all.. Why can’t they stick to Ballrom Dancing, so that we can promote Ballroom Dancing over here, since it isn’t very popular..
To be honest, I totally prefer Ballroom Dancing shows, such as DWTS or SCD, where you have people that have been in that business their entire lives, and where they have a Technique to teach, and not just jumping around the dancefloor..
that would be so cool if the rotating room dance was on our DWTS. And the transparent pool thing. I can’t imagine the american version having the strip and pole dances… maybe i can
Hola Pablo! My text is almost done. If you could correct some mistake, please do it! =]
Barba Roja, actually I don’t like brazilian version because I know it could be so much better. Yes, some of our latin american dances have not the tecnique degree we see on ballroom dance, but it definely doesn’t mean they don’t have tecnique. Example: (argentine) Tango, Salsa, Samba de Gafieira, Bachata. These dances are very very tecnical and there are a lot of people who master them in our countries.
The problem is: the producers don’t care very much about it. what is a shame.
I know some versions of dwts in latin america are kistch, but I like them on their own way. As I said a long time ago, they are so freak that are good…
[...] you haven’t heard yet, the Argentina version of Dancing With The Stars has a winner. Carlos is back to give us a complete update which you can read below. THANKS CARLOS!! [...]
