DWTS Season 14 – Oh Come On, That’s Not Gonna Happen!
This is a new series that I decided to write in order to reduce my exasperation that comes from reading “DWTS” and “Dancing with the Stars” twitter searches every day. 🙂 Partly based in annoyance and partly based in sympathy…I just need to vent a bit. And maybe save some people some time.
What do I mean, you ask? Well, the title pretty much says it all. Everyday I see comments, petitions, made up rumors and the like that are so totally implausible and so…not gonna happen…that it’s hard not to write to the posters and explain why they should save their breath and/or their time. 🙂
The number one idea that got me started down this road guaranteed to piss someone off is the Twitition going around to get Cory Monteith (Glee) on DWTS as a celebrity dancer. While I appreciate the passion that fans have for their favorite celebrities, don’t waste your time on this one kids. I like Cory as much as the next Gleek, but there are several reasons why you won’t see Cory on DWTS in the next few years. For one thing, he’s not insane. 🙂 He’s riding a popularity wave right now, even though DWTS is much higher rated than Glee is in total viewers. The single most important reason why he won’t be on DWTS is that he’s not only on a hit TV show…he’s on a hit TV show ON ANOTHER NETWORK. Soap stars who aren’t on ABC can’t get on the show even when they desperately want to do the show…like Michelle Stafford from Y&R, who would look amazing with Derek. It’s not likely to happen even though she can be seen in the audience during the season and her soap tapes at the same studio. It’s never been publicized, but it’s a widely held belief backed up by years of anecdotal evidence that ABC will not cast stars of current shows from other networks on this show. The end.
All that said – I sure would love to see Heather Morris and Harry Shum busta move on a results show. Derek was hanging out with Mark Salling over New Years, maybe he can have another idea that includes those two and Mark can hook him up. 🙂 Hey, I can dream too.
Speaking of petitions…there is one that Chelsie fans are spreading around trying to get her back on the show. Again – I really appreciate the desire, especially as a person who’s fav has sat out a season. You miss them. I get it. For this to work, you will need THOUSANDS of signatures, otherwise it is unlikely to make an impact. It’s simple math, really – the show is watched by 20 million people, on average. Anything less than 10 percent of that number is unlikely to have an impact. There is NO indication that the professional dancers have any impact on ratings by their presence OR absence. Don’t waste your precious time…besides, I think the odds are very good that she’ll be back if they find her a tiny guy to dance with. 😉 Sitting out one season is not necessarily a death nell. Lacey sat out a season against her will and she came back. Chelsie will be back too. But if anyone here is seriously worried that I’m wrong, do a search on twitter and sign the petition. It won’t hurt anything, for sure.
I saw one thing today that actually made me laugh out loud. Someone posed the question in a poll “Should Maks date Kirsti Alley??” Like it was a real possibility. Like we get to vote on it. Okay, so a youngster has shipper dreams. We’ve all been there. But Oh dear lord. First off….oh come on, that’s not going to happen!! Secondly – you all DO realize that we don’t actually have a say in who Maks and/or Kirsti dates, right?? I mean…NO SAY. The show needs to come back on again, and quick. The boredom is making some people act strangely. 🙂 Or they just want a bunch of like-minded followers. Who can say?
My last bit of exasperation of the day is ABC’s fault, the twerps. 🙂 We are now on the third consecutive season where ABC/DWTS encourages people to “cast the next season” of the show. The result is massive online campaigns to get a variety of stars on the show….including those who are on other networks, and we already discussed why this doesn’t work. This makes me say it in all caps: OH COME ON!!!! How many people who have had massive twitter campaigns for their favorites, encouraging people to “go vote” on the abc website have actually made it on to the show?? ZERO. If any one of those people get selected it will be pure blind luck…or someone they already desperately wanted anyway. Since no one has been chosen the past two seasons, why do people insist on wasting hours a day (clogging my twitter feed) begging people to go vote?? Do they work for ABC?? 🙂
Granted, ABC never claims that it is an actual contest. It phrases it in much the same way that Vogue phrases her polls…asking what readers think. The big difference is, of course – we have no actual connection to the show (not to mention that we actually try to limit it to ONE vote). The very nature of the DWTS website lends the question some…plausibility. There are people who think they actually have a chance. All they really succeed in doing is giving a whole bunch of slow season hits to the website guaranteed to keep the ad revenue high. Which of course makes it genius, albeit extraordinarily annoying. Please quit clogging my twitter feeds with spam request to “vote for…” Please? 🙂
Until next time, sports fans!!
LOL Heidi, great write up and I look so forward to this new series!!
And LOLLL to the new poll on Maks and Kirstie dating! Are they serious? Geez, the long wait until the show starts is really getting to some people? 😯
Great article! I wish they would consider allowing contestants to be from other network shows – maybe they’d get some more popular stars! Plus, fans will watch anything their favorite celebrities are on, it could be a huge ratings booster!
Isn’t it a pretty well-known fact that Cory Monteith is the worst dancer out of the Glee cast? You’d think they’d at least push for someone that had a chance of succeeding on the show 😛 I also wonder if the rumors I’ve heard about Ryan Murphy (the show’s creator) being an absolute terror to work for would prevent Cory from pursuing any outside ventures while still a member of the cast – apparently Ryan’s a slave driver and credits himself with launching the careers of all of the show’s stars, which he doesn’t hesistate to hold over their heads. I don’t see TPTB pursuing Cory to begin with, but even if they did – I couldn’t see this one panning out for a multitude of reasons.
I get a bit irked when fans of a certain pro try to spin some wild conspiracy theory about why their pro had to sit out a season. The biggest determining factor that I can see (especially as far as Lacey & Chelsie are concerned) is height – they’re the 2 shortest female pros on the show, at 5’3″ and 5’2″, respectively, which doesn’t give them much flexibility where male celebs are concerned – they can really only dance with men under 6′ (if that). And they’re young – I do notice that TPTB tend to pair pros & celebs together that look good together, and it’s hard to do that when there’s a big age gap (remember how awkward many of us thought Chelsie looked with Michael Bolton?). I don’t believe for one minute that Chelsie sat out this past season due to some malicious intent by TPTB – it’s just where the chips fell, based on the celebs they cast. I would be surprised if she was not back this season.
And I’m not even gonna comment on the Maks/Kirstie nonsense…*eye roll*.
I agree, Camille – I think they would benefit tremendously, if they would loosen up on that unspoken rule. I have a feeling that Disney is at work here – they want their kids on that show and no one else.
I really agree with the loosening of ban on other network celebrities. I think the show could really benefit. I don’t think they listen either, but when I have been really bored I have gone to the site and suggested Michelle stafford more than once. I think it would be so great to get her (for Derek)and the guy that plays “Nick” (maybe with Karina or Anna).
And laughab;e, sugeestions of people like Jennifer Anniston, Tom Cruise and the like…REALLY?!?! I wish I could live in a world that full of fantasy. And the push for geezers, c’mon. I am ready for some HOT, competitive pairings without the “staged” outcomes and as someone said, the extra Disney push.
I guess that means there could be another Disney plant this coming season lol. When it comes to certain pros sitting out, it’s just a combination of their choice, or the producers couldn’t find a good fit for them. Although I don’t think the Chelsie and Michael Bolton pairing was originally planned. I remember Edyta was originally supposed to be on Season 11 and Lacey was out, but Edyta “quit” the show so I think they had to rearrange and that’s why Lacey was back on the show. I think originally Chelsie was with Kyle, but due to height and Edyta leaving, they got Lacey back and gave Kyle to her and Chelsie unfortunately got stuck with Michael Bolton. I actually think Lacey was benched for season 10 because her partnership with Mark Dacasco was not as great as they had hoped. I actually liked him better when he was paired with Anna for that one week than with Lacey all the other weeks. I also think b/c Anna had helped out a lot that season despite being eliminated, they gave her Evan Lysacek the next season.
@Steve – Yes, I agree that the Chelsie-Michael pairing was not originally planned – my point was more that the reason that one ended up so awkwardly was BECAUSE it was forced to be that way. In season 11, Edyta was supposed to be with Rick, Cheryl was supposed to have Michael, and Chelsie was going to have Kyle; however, Edyta’s unexpected exit threw a wrench into that plan, and since Rick’s 6’7″ height necessitated his partner be as tall as possible, 5’4″ Cheryl got shifted over to him. Michael didn’t strike me as the outgoing type who would have dealt well with Lacey’s in-you-face style, so that’s likely how he got the much-calmer Chelsie; and that left Lacey for Kyle. I thought Kyle & Lacey were perfect together, but the other two couples were awkwardly mismatched – Rick just towered over Cheryl, and Michael & Chelsie just seemed to grate on each other’s nerves. Given the option, I doubt TPTB would have EVER paired those two couples together.
I’m not sure if I agree that Lacey got sat out in season 10 due to her partnership with Mark Dacascos not “doing as well as expected” – 6th place out of 16 couples is pretty good, especially with 2 big ringers in the mix. If anything, I think it was her mouthiness to the media post-season 9 that may have made TPTB think twice about casting her – and then her stint with E! and her very public whining to the press about Nicole’s participation being “unfair” in season 10 may have further deterred them from casting her season 11. They only brought her back because they had to, but luckily I think she redeemed herself well with Kyle. I can’t imagine anyone else partnering him.
I guess Season 11 was full of wrenches they couldn’t dodge lol. I will say Lacey is redeeming herself since her season with Kyle but I guess she is the “female” Maks when it comes to talking to the cameras lol. Wonder how the partnerships would’ve gone had Edyta not dropped out. If Ryan O’Neal does do the show next season, I really hope he doesn’t get Anna and they give him someone else, because I think he had Anna before he dropped out after a few days of rehearsal and they had to bring in Carson Kressley, which was an unexpected surprise!
Great post! Courtney, I did not know that happened in season 11. I always assumed Edyta got Michael and that is why she was done with dwts. Rick seemed like a decent pairing. Maybe it had more to do with the way the show treated Alec.
I still find Lacey annoying though she was good with Kyle. Her ballroom is so weak. I do not find Chelsie that strong of a daner either but it still looks better than Lacey. She is immature.
No way Ryan Murphy have Cory or any Glee cast member on dwts. Rumor was Ryan was upset when Mark Salling had his solo album out and punished him by giving him less screen time. Rumors and all but Ryan being a pain as a producer have been said on his other shows too. Besides Cory is not only not a good dancer but he hates it. The choreographer on Glee joked about it how Cory hates it.
Oh I would love to see Derek dance with Heather and Harry from Glee. Be inspired again and bring Allison back too and would love to see what those guys would create on a results show.
Off topic, but anyone see all those past dwts celebs on the Apprentice cast? Some of those lame reality stars aside, there were some celebs on that list I would love to see on dwts. Also they were legitimately big at one time unlike some cast members this last season. Debbie Gibson, Arsenio, Dee Snider, Lou F. Love to see those guys on dwts. I would take them over a Hills star or Clooney’s ex.
Sorry. I meant Lacey comes off still immature to me. I guess she is the female Maks.
@Steve & Melissa – Lacey can still be a mouthy little brat at times, but I do have to give her credit for growing up a bit in the past few seasons, both in her demeanor & her choreography. I actually really enjoyed the way she interacted with Chaz this season – she seemed more patient than usual, but wasn’t afraid to be firm. And she treated him like the normal person that he deserved to be treated like…she didn’t try to exploit his situation. That said, I still find her ballroom technique to be atrocious 😯 I’ve never seen someone stick their butt out so far to do foxtrot!
Season 11 was kind of a clusterf*ck 😛 If there ever was a season that they needed to retain a tall, willowy female pro like Edyta (5’6″), it was that season – I think Rick Fox & Ron Artest are tied for tallest celebs ever to do the show (both 6’7″), and the only other tall female pro they had that season was Kym at 5’7″, and I think The Hoff actually requested her, so she wasn’t available to swap. 5’7″ Peta wasn’t in the picture yet, and 5’10” Anna Demidova (who would have been PERFECT) was busy competing as a professional. So that left 5’5″ Karina (who I think was the only one willing to start practicing late, so she got stuck with Sitch), 5’4″ Anna and 5’4″ Cheryl. At that point, I think it was more of a matter of just visual compatibility, so Cheryl was chosen to partner Rick. When it really comes down to it, height is a far more important factor in partnering that a lot of folks care to admit 🙂 As for Edyta’s reasons for leaving – we may never know the full story, although I keep hearing that it had something to do with Alec…which honestly kind of puzzles me, because I had it heard more to do with her getting better partners, better pay, and more screen time, since she was the longest-tenured pro on the show at the time. Alec may have played a part in her decision to leave, but ultimately I think she was just tired of getting shafted with partners like Jeff Ross, Ashley Hamilton, & Aiden Turner, who all flamed out early.

Kerry Rhodes on dwts? When people say that it’s usually a no… but u never know.
I have to say Lacey has been better since she was benched. That is why I think it would do Mark some good too. I do feel of the younger pros, Derek has matured and wen Lacey had made progress while it seems like Mark regressed. And yes, her ballroom technique is really why I find her participation annoying. I would rather get Anna D back or give Anya.
I guess we will never know about Edyta. I can see the reasons you mentioned and being the most tenured pro wanting more and the way they treat Alec being like a nail in the coffin ending her time on dwts. It was unfortunate it ended the way it did because she was missed in that 200th episode celebration since she was on the first ten seasons. She was never a fave but I miss her disposition. As for Alec, tbh, he was not screwed IMO. He won and Natalie Coughlin was a great partner. Better than Kelly or Joanna that season. It just stunk they did not have the votes. Toni was a good celeb to get too. But she seemed tentative. I thought Alec and Derek got similar partners. Well until the recent giving Derek older women who requested him.
Looking ahead, would love to see Mark get that older celeb. I think it would change his attitude. I think working with Kristi, he had to be mature. Also to finally see Derek with someone in their twenties or an athlete. He does push his celebs but always wondered how an athlete would respond to his style.
I don’t think any thinking is required, Steve – I’m pretty certain that Anna did have Ryan and then got Carson when Ryan had to quit. Seems like that was actually mentioned in the media somewhere.
I think ppl comparing Lacey to Maks is doing Lacey a bit of a disservice (even though I’m not a fan) – Courtney is right, Lacey did amazingly well with Chaz and I was proud of her. Where she went wrong last season is where she always goes wrong – mouthing off to the media, bitching about the judges or whatever. She was deluded (and as a result, Chaz was deluded) into thinking that they actually deserved better scores. The one thing she was RIGHT about was that Bruno was out of line with the animal comparisons. Maks, on the other hand, was an offender on several levels – mouthy, pushy to his partner and totally unrepentant, to the point that the producers didn’t let him do post elimination media. And he’s been like that forever. Louis did the same as Lacey did, and he wasn’t on last season. I guess we’ll see what happens this next season. I think if you are popular enough you can be a jerk a lot longer than if you’re not that popular. Hence, Maks is still there and Lacey and Louis have sat out. Who knows?
Edyta made several comments about wanting to finish her education and having other things she wanted to accomplish in life. At some point, those desires outweigh crappy partners. 🙂
I don’t think maturity or growth is necessarily directly correlated with a pro sitting a season out. Derek is just simply getting older – he’s not a 21 year old kid anymore. Going off and doing a movie (not to mention a serious relationship which ended) contribute a lot to maturity, but so does age. And then there are some who just never grow up, or who seem to act immature based on circumstances.
It should come with age, I agree Heidi. But some obviously have not, lol. I think for Lacey, she came in with a bit of an ego. Just what I saw. I think sitting out a season was humbling and coupled with a partner like Kyle brought out a better side. I think benching alone was not a factor but given the stories of her thinking she was the star and the way she was with Mark during season 9, I am sure it might have given her time to reflect. That is why think benching would help Mark. One, his passion seems to be music so why not let him focus on that. But also a bit of humble pie too. Not saying that is the sole factor or a direct correlation but I think it can only help, not hurt a pro. If anything, giving some pros a season off in general would be good for them. I think Maks and Cheryl, while I was amazed at what she did with Rob, would benefit from a season off too.
You’ll get no argument from me when you put it that way Melissa!
Love the post, PH! i have moments on twitter when i go exactly like you…No way or When the hell freezes over .. in all caps!! now:
Glee is too successful right now so they don’t exactly feel the need of having one of their cast members on DWTS… at least ..for the time being.
Maks and Kirstie – right….moving on…
Chelsie…i really like her and i think she will be back next season… i don’t take her sitting out a season as a punishment…i just don’t think they had the right partner for her. but..i get her fans’ desire to do anything to get her back…i would like to see my fav pro dancing too…
Lacey…i think that her big mouth will get to her in the end… this season i felt like she took everything way to personal …and she complained a lot ..about everything…i liked her partnership whit Kyle and Chaz..but she talks to much…and complains too much
ABC just needs website traffic..and they would do just about everything to get it.
about Edyta…i like her personality…i wish she would come back..but i don’t think it will happen..i think she had just about enough with the pairing …
Well it has been a while since I’ve been in cyber space but I am glad to see Pure DWTS still keeping it real.
Great article Heidi. I unfortunately was one of the suckers who fell for the “Cast the Season” crack until I read a tweet exposing what ABC was trying
to pull. I can’t believe they’re still at it.
You guys should do your own motto for this website. Pure DWTS: Fair and Balanced 😛
Great job!
Elara, yup ABC needs web traffic during the off season. Like they take any of those suggestions seriously, lol.
# Melissa LOL yeah..right!! i wouldn’t know…i never made one..i like the waiting, the anticipation and the surprise..
Wow, I would love to see Heather Morris on a results show! Great post, Heidi 🙂
NATHAN! (((Welcome back!!!!!!))
Maybe I’m alone in this, and it’s a tad off topic, but I wouldn’t be upset if several of the regular pros sat out for a season or two. I’m loving the troupe members and would love to see a few of them get full-time gigs on the show. Especially Sasha, Ted, and Sharna. I thought Peta and Tristan were great additions this past season, especially Tristan, who’s popularity has skyrocketed with fans. I think maybe it’s time to let the young blood have a go and see what happens.
(((Vogue))) Thank you so much!!! Missed you all!!
NATHAN!!!! *big hugs* Where have you been??? I tried to find your YouTube channel & Twitter accounts to say hi a little while back…did you delete them during your Net vacay?
Hi Courtney!!!!
Yes I did. I went through a rough patch and shut myself down…literally. But I am back and taking it slowly day by day.
Thanks so much!!
Good to see you back, Nathan!!
Cory Monteith on DWTS is a good idea for after his time on Glee is over and he has exhausted all options (Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of Glee but he is the worst dancer there but is a decent actor and a good singer (ex. “man in the mirror” was awesome) ). The rumors about Ryan Murphy are intersting becuase I remeber NPH saying something like that too. I belive he called working under Ryan “factory work” or something like that.
On a side note, Chelsie fans shouldn’t worry. I have this terrible feeling she is either going to get stuck with Ryan O’Neal or get somebody who is the dark horse. I don’t see Ryan and Anna (who was supposed to be his partner apparantly before he dropped out due to surgery/medical stuff or as rumored hatred for Nancy Grace making Carson replace him…..which was in hindsight a good move because Carson was great entertainment) getting along. He can be very insulting. They might just give him Chelsie or even Cheryl just to avoid that but considering Cheryl just placed second I’m gonna say Chelsie becuase she kinda jsut goes with the flow where Cheryl doesn’t put up with peoples’ bs.
@Nathan – I know the feeling 🙂 Hang in there, love! Glad to have you back 😀
@vin – At first I dismissed some of the claims I was hearing about Ryan Murphy being just a horrible person to work with, but after awhile, hearing the same thing over and over again from multiple sources – I think it may be true. I totally believe NPH – apparently Ryan makes the cast work long hours, doesn’t pay them nearly enough, and locks horns with anyone who dares challenge his creative choices. Allegedly, he even had a screaming match with Kristen Chenoweth (possibly one of the most likeable people on the planet) the last time she guest starred on the show. And it’s not just limited to cast members – he also tends to badmouth any musical act that won’t allow their music to be used on the show. He’s had some pretty public spats with the Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, and Slash from Guns & Roses. The guy is a genius, don’t get me wrong – but there’s a thin line between genius & insanity, and I think he may have crossed it. He got too big too quick, and his ego has outgrown his body of work.
Sounds to me like he will eventually fail and fail HARD. You can’t piss off (or piss on) the on-camera talent continually and not eventually suffer for it. It takes great on-camera talent to make a show….not just good creation. And let’s face it – Kristen, Lea, and Matthew are all big Broadway people. They’ve got talent to spare, as does the whole cast. You can only mistreat people who can easily find work elsewhere for so long before you find yourself ALONE.
Welcome Back Nathan 🙂
Off Topic: But Karina will be on the Season Premiere of “Say Yes to the Dress”. It looks like she was the one trying on wedding dresses… I hope Karina can stay strong once the show airs…
Thanks so much Heidi, Courtney, Vogue, Sandy!!!
# Nathan – now i know why i couldn’t find you on twitter. Glad to have you back!!! xoxo
@ Princess Heidi and Courtney: I feel like he didn’t really give Glee a good writing and kinda went nuts with the music last season two (don’t get me wrong I loved the journey medly and lea michelle’s version of adele but the others were jsut too much in one episode). Thankfully he fixed that this season (w notabale exception of the episode with all the west side story music….drove me nuts).
On a side note, NPH would make a great DWTS contestant once HIMYM is over (and hopefully they wrap it up soon because its losing steam plot wise). This is going to sound bad but the first time I saw hum act was in Scary Movie 2 and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle but I’ve been a fan since.
I think one of the reasons Cory’s name is being tossed around for a possible contestant is the fact this is his last season of Glee along with Leah Michelle and Chris Colfer. So once their time at Glee is up they can do DWTS if they choose. I personally don’t think Cory would but then again you never know.
Amanda, those rumors came out about Lea, Chris and Cory, but I think the producers and the network (and those individuals) all denied it. I think the jury is still out.
Even if true, he won’t be done in time for rehearsals for the next season.
[…] second chapter in what will likely be a very long book. In case you missed chapter 1, this is a series where I talk about what I see on Twitter that makes me roll my eye in […]
