DWTS 14 Week 1 Power Rankings

Ummm, ok – so that was the most lovey-dovey first week of competition I’ve ever seen :-P And while that may seem like a good thing on the surface, keep in mind that the max score that they can give is a 30/30…and they already got disturbingly close to that tonight.  Food for thought.

That said, I have to admit – I don’t think anyone really and truly sucked tonight.  Not everyone was perfect, and there was some definite overscoring going on across the board, but overall, a very impressive effort from everyone.  And they all seem to love each other so freakin’ much :-D Should be interesting to see how things shake out next week!

1.) Jaleel & Kym – No big surprises here – Jaleel could possibly be the most natural mover I’ve ever seen on the show.  Everything he did just oozed with ease – the way he was getting in and out of hold, and transitioning through steps? SUBLIME.  And how he managed to still play to the crowd the whole time??? And stay connected to Kym???! Loved it…loved it…loved it.  But there’s still room for improvement – he seemed a tiny bit rushed at times (a problem a few male celebs seemed to have tonight), and while he never actually got off-time…he came close.  I’ll chalk it up to first week jitters this time, but I do think it’s something he’s going to have to watch in the future.  Overall, I’m very excited about what these two have to offer us this season :-)

NOTE: From here through 10th place, I’m pretty wishy-washy…not confident in my rankings AT ALL.  Be kind ;-)

2.) Gladys & Tristan – No, I absolutely do not think they were the 2nd best dancers of the night, but man – Gladys did about the most adorable cha-cha I think I’ve ever seen on the show :-P The gal can move well…and not just well for a 67-year-old.  She and Tristan both looked like they were having a ton of fun out there, and I was impressed at how well Gladys kept up with Tristan, especially on the open work.   She got a bit wobbly at times, and there were a few moments where I thought her arms and feet got a little wishy-washy, but this was far more than I was expecting out of our lil Empress of Soul! A word of caution to Tristan & Gladys fans, though: you ought to be ok this week, but be prepared to vote your fingers off in the coming weeks.  The “adorable sentimental favorite” factor will likely carry her through next week just fine, but there will come a time when the luster will have worn off the rose and she will either need to start scoring big or getting hoards of votes.  Chaz from last season comes to mind – everyone thought he was so “cute” and “unexpected” after week 1 last season…and then week 2 rolled around and he crashed & burned.  Just a warning ;-) On a side note – LOVED seeing all 3 Pips in the audience, clapping as hard as they possibly could for Gladys.  So sweet. :-) Read more..

DWTS 2012 Jaleel White Says He And Kym Johnson Have The Chill On (Video)

Jaleel has a new blog video up at Access Hollywood. He says Kym has been a real “stickler”, but they have the “chill” on. He says Kym has been feeling “neglected” because he doesn’t look at her enough when dancing. He’s going to be funny. More below….

Melissa Gilbert Blogs On Maks Chmerkovskiy and Dancing With The Stars

Melissa Gilbert has written a new blog for People.com. She has high praise for her Dancing With The Stars partner Maks Chmerkovskiy and he’s definitely bringing out the best in her. He’s like a “bad brother” too. Read more below and even more at the link. Can’t wait to see these two (and her hair! :) ). :)

Maks is an extraordinary teacher. He’s a magnificent dancer. He’s a strong and powerful partner and he’s proving to be an incredible friend.

Our relationship is … well, just weird. Sometimes, we are absolute equals. Most of the time, he leads (which frustrates the hell out of me, as I am a total type-A personality). Sometimes, I counsel and caution. All of the time, we laugh … a lot. He’s like a bad brother. He loves to make me blush. Watch the show, you’ll see me turn purple. Literally, the same color as the wall!

Maks is helping me to tap into a part of myself that no one really knows. Not publicly, anyway. He’s bringing out in me the sexy, confident, fiery redheaded cougar. Crazy, right? Halfpint a cougar? Really?!

Oh, yeah! I think we all have that cougar in us. Ladies my age, you know what I’m talking about. We’ve reached the point where we are in full command of our bodies and minds. We know what we want, and we have the years behind us to know exactly how to get it. Meow!

I’m going into our first week on the air in full-tilt cougar mode. Even the costume is dangerously hot. I have to bring it. I have to step up.

So Maks, if you’re reading this, it’s time for you to strap on your seatbelt, because here I come!

DWTS 14 Cheryl Burke Says Cha Cha Song Has A Strong Latin Flair (Videos)

Cheryl gets us caught up on her projects over the off season at OK! Magazine. She is excited about tonight’s dance with her new sexy partner William Levy. Here is more….

I think that fans of the show are really going to love my partner this season, William Levy. We got a little bit of a late start in our training.

We weren’t able to begin until about 10 days after everyone else started as William is one of the top Latin actors and has quite the demanding scheduling.

We’ve been training just outside of Miami. We only got back to L.A. a few days ago, so we’ve spent the few days leading up to the show racing to get interviews done, costume fittings complete and posing for our official ABC DWTS photos.

We’ve also managed to find some time to check in on the other couples, and I know that viewers and fans of our show are going to be impressed with the level of dancing talent this season.

William and I are starting the season off with a cha-cha to a song that definitely has a strong Latin flair.

Already the camaraderie and vibe remind me so much of the season that I danced with Gilles Marini, and if that’s anything to go by, we are in for an amazing season!

I can’t wait to see what song she’s talking about!!! Below is Cheryl on Access Hollywood as well….

The Top 5 Best First Week Foxtrots in DWTS History

This is a little later than I originally intended, but alas, life throws us curve balls from time to time :-) As promised, here are my top 5 first week foxtrots in DWTS history…maybe something we’ll see tomorrow night will bump one of these from the list! Or maybe it will make the worst list instead…8O But how ’bout some more foxtrot stats first?

*There is a 5-way tie for the pro that has done the most week 1 foxtrots: Maks, Tony, Jonathan, Edyta, & Mark have all done the foxtrot in the first week 3 times.

*The highest first-week foxtrot score ever given was 27 – it was given to Kristi & Mark in season 6.

*The average score for a week 1 foxtrot is 19.14. The score given most often in week 1? 18.

5.) Helio & Julianne, season 5

I just loved how cute these two were together – it also didn’t hurt that Helio had a good deal of natural talent :-) And in what you’ll see to be a recurring theme in this countdown, it was a very traditional foxtrot, which was comprised mainly of foxtrot steps with a little bit of jazzy open work thrown in.  There’s something to be said for staying in the box from time to time, kids!

4.) Laila & Maks, season 4

Another very natural mover – Laila just made everything look so EASY.  I think a lot of her appeal in her season was that sense of ease, and it really came in hand in a dance like the foxtrot, where everything is supposed to have a gliding, walk-in-the-park kind of feel.  Just the little bit of sass thrown in just made it perfect for week 1. DWTS Martina Navtratilova On Conquering Her Fears, Tony Dovolani, Dancing, and More!

Martina tells The LA Times why she decided to compete on Dancing With The Stars. She says she’s been facing her fears ever since she was 14 and her parents put her in a ballroom dancing class. She was once scared of flying, so she got her pilot’s license. She’s scared of dancing, so, why not conquer that fear by dancing on the largest dance floor in the world. Amazing. I love her. :) Be sure to read the link for the full interview. Below is her thoughts on how her tennis training is helping her and more….

Q: Did any of your tennis training help prepare you for this competition?
Absolutely. It definitely helps that my body is already in gear and ready to go. I’ve got the endurance part down and the discipline to practice. Now I’ve just got to get control of my head and keep it still and the rest of the body is getting there.

Q: Is there any style of dance you are particularly looking forward to?
Honestly, I don’t know that much about ballroom dancing other than what I’ve seen on the previous seasons, so it’s all new to me! I guess the more upbeat dances may be more up my alley since I know I’ve got the endurance for them, and plus it’s more along the lines of music I like to listen to in my everyday life.

Q: The mirrorball trophy looks like a lot of tennis trophies I’ve seen. Will it find a prominent place in your collection if you win?
For sure! I’ve got my eye on the prize and I’d like nothing more than to add it to my mantle. I might have to clear a big space in my living room, remove all the furniture, put the trophy on a pedestal in the middle of it and just dance around it.

DWTS Season 14 Stats Class: Week 1 Predicted Scores

So here we are, the first week of the season and rumor has it that the celebs are going to be dancing either the gracefully upbeat Foxtrot or the fun and flirty Cha-Cha. So let’s get cooking and see what their scores could be.

What I’m going to do this season is different from previous seasons. I will post up the average score of the dance in a particular group/category and then average all three scores completely and round up or down based on intangibles and there you have the final predicted scores. Keep in mind that popularity, previous dance experience, etc are not taken into account… that is simply too many variables for me to attempt to follow for any season.

GAVIN DEGRAW
Dance: Foxtrot
Average Scores:
– Age: 19.435
– Occupation: 20.000
– Professional Partner: 21.000
Predicted Score: 20
Comments: With most of his scores being “middle of the road” the only thing going for him is his partner Karina. Her scores on the Foxtrot in the first third of the season on average is relatively higher than most pros. Should he be part of the middle of the pack… he may be alright for the week (considering the rabid fan base I’ve noticed thus far) but if he doesn’t shine either this week or next week, he could be in trouble for the casual viewer.

DONALD DRIVER
Dance: ChaCha
Average Scores:
– Age: 19.667
– Occupation: 19.143
– Professional Partner: 14.000
Predicted Score: 18
Comments: It’s always hard to tell how a celeb would do when they are paired with a relatively new pro. NFL players typically do better in the Foxtrot out of the gate as opposed to the ChaCha, so with a couple of strikes against him… NFL players could surprise the audience by sheer weight of their personality, he might be lucky here. However, when looking at the scores of NFL players in their 30s, they tend to hit above average (21.000)… so I almost feel that this score is rather low overall. Read more..

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

Chelsie Hightower Says Tonight Is Going To Be A Good Show On Dancing With The Stars

Chelsie Hightower was interviewed by ABC 6 NEWS this morning about how her and Roshon’s rehearsals. She says that they’ve been working hard trying to learn as much as possible these last three weeks. She says Roshon has a great attitude for it all and he wants to do well. He’s like a “sponge” learning everything and they are a great match.

Chelsie also gives some thoughts on the cast. She says she’s heard Jaleel White, Marina Menounos, William Levy, and Sherrie Shepherd will be the teams to watch closely this year. She thinks every couple will be exciting to watch in some way and they all have fun personalities.

You can listen the full interview at ABC 6 NEWS. (I love her hair!)
