DWTS 14 Week 1 Power Rankings
Ummm, ok – so that was the most lovey-dovey first week of competition I’ve ever seen
And while that may seem like a good thing on the surface, keep in mind that the max score that they can give is a 30/30…and they already got disturbingly close to that tonight. Food for thought.
That said, I have to admit – I don’t think anyone really and truly sucked tonight. Not everyone was perfect, and there was some definite overscoring going on across the board, but overall, a very impressive effort from everyone. And they all seem to love each other so freakin’ much
Should be interesting to see how things shake out next week!
1.) Jaleel & Kym – No big surprises here – Jaleel could possibly be the most natural mover I’ve ever seen on the show. Everything he did just oozed with ease – the way he was getting in and out of hold, and transitioning through steps? SUBLIME. And how he managed to still play to the crowd the whole time??? And stay connected to Kym???! Loved it…loved it…loved it. But there’s still room for improvement – he seemed a tiny bit rushed at times (a problem a few male celebs seemed to have tonight), and while he never actually got off-time…he came close. I’ll chalk it up to first week jitters this time, but I do think it’s something he’s going to have to watch in the future. Overall, I’m very excited about what these two have to offer us this season
NOTE: From here through 10th place, I’m pretty wishy-washy…not confident in my rankings AT ALL. Be kind
2.) Gladys & Tristan – No, I absolutely do not think they were the 2nd best dancers of the night, but man – Gladys did about the most adorable cha-cha I think I’ve ever seen on the show
The gal can move well…and not just well for a 67-year-old. She and Tristan both looked like they were having a ton of fun out there, and I was impressed at how well Gladys kept up with Tristan, especially on the open work. She got a bit wobbly at times, and there were a few moments where I thought her arms and feet got a little wishy-washy, but this was far more than I was expecting out of our lil Empress of Soul! A word of caution to Tristan & Gladys fans, though: you ought to be ok this week, but be prepared to vote your fingers off in the coming weeks. The “adorable sentimental favorite” factor will likely carry her through next week just fine, but there will come a time when the luster will have worn off the rose and she will either need to start scoring big or getting hoards of votes. Chaz from last season comes to mind – everyone thought he was so “cute” and “unexpected” after week 1 last season…and then week 2 rolled around and he crashed & burned. Just a warning
On a side note – LOVED seeing all 3 Pips in the audience, clapping as hard as they possibly could for Gladys. So sweet.
3.) William & Cheryl – Ok, this is the type of overscoring that genuinely pisses me off, because while William may be nice to look at (I actually agree with Heidi & Sally and find his head to be misproportioned with the rest of his body), I would never in a million years give such a tentative, cautious cha-cha one point more than one of the most innovative and well-executed cha-chas I’ve ever seen on the show (Roshon, which we’ll get to later). Did William stay on time and do all his moves? Yes, and I actually did see some potential there, as he does seem to have some natural talent; but that’s all I saw this week – unrealized potential. He too seemed like a victim of the first week jitters, and I could almost see him counting through his steps in his head. Little to no expression on his face, and what I consider to be a complete lack of connection to both his partner and the audience. Cheryl did what I was afraid she would do – she danced around him, and he thew a few half-assed pelvic thrusts in her direction. And was it just me, or was that a HORRIBLE version of “International Love”? Very distracting
However, apparently Len & Bruno grew some lady parts over the winter hiatus, because they joined Carrie Ann in heaping over-the-top praise on William – which makes me wonder if the judges are somehow handicapping William & Katherine (and to a lesser degree, Gladys) to give them a better chance of sticking around longer, despite some possible disadvantages (in William’s case, lack of fanbase…which I don’t think will be a problem anymore, the way I saw the chicks in the studio whoopin’ & hollerin’ for him!). The true test will be next week with the quickstep – William can’t really bring the “Latin heat” to that one. We’ll see how he’s able to manage when he can’t fall back on sexiness…
4.) Katherine & Mark – Yes, Katherine was lovely, and this, like Jaleel’s foxtrot, was very fluid but probably a bit overscored…then again, what can you do when a routine that would probably get a 15 on any other season suddenly pulls out a 20? You go even higher on the good routines. Katherine’s got great posture, FANTASTIC arms, and is drop-dead gorgeous – but like I mentioned upon seeing her rehearsal video, she’s got some foot issues, and I think she got a bit of the plastered-on, glassy-eyed, hollow smile on her face that many ballroom dancers seem to get when they first start competing. Again, I’ll go ahead and give her a free pass this week and chalk it up to nervousness, but it will be something she needs to address – if she doesn’t, I think she’ll run the risk of not connecting to her audience. Mark seemed pleasantly reigned-in tonight, and didn’t outdance Katherine – and that’s something I think he will need to keep an eye on, as I get the feeling that Katherine is probably not going to be so much of a sexy, in-your-face firecracker this season as she will be a demure, elegant lady…I could definitely see her dominating the ballroom dances, but maybe struggling on the Latin ones…which is why I think it will be telling to see how she handles the jive next week. If she can hack it, she could be a contender – if she can’t, I don’t know that she’ll be able to last long, even with overscoring. A very big question mark for me.
5.) Sherri & Val – I think this couple was not so much memorable for their routine (which was very cute, nonetheless) as they were for Sherri’s random exclamations in the celebraquarium afterward
I definitely think Sherri’s gonna stick out in viewers’ minds this season; the question is – will it be positive or negative? My mother was cackling for 5 minutes straight after the boob comment (which made it kinda hard to hear Melissa’s package), but sooner or later the comedy will grow old and she will need something more to keep viewers hooked. Luckily, she does seem to bring quite a bit of energy and interaction with the audience to the dance floor – she can definitely entertain. But while I did enjoy this foxtrot, which was clean and well-executed, it was also pretty simple – what is she gonna do when she has to do a fast dance like the jive? I could see her struggling with stamina, and if she’s having to focus entirely on her choreography, that showmanship that worked so well tonight could go out the window. I’m also a bit puzzled about how her relationship with Val will play out – in somewhat of the opposite problem I have with Mark & Katherine, I almost feel like Sherri just completely overshadows the more reserved Val…and in dances where it’s important that the man be masculine & assertive, like the paso doble or tango, I worry that Sherri is going to look less demure and more…domineering. They’re going to need to strike a balance if they want to stick around.
6.) Roshon & Chelsie – After watching Roshon’s lead-in package, I was seriously worried for Chelsie – but then I saw how slick he was on the floor, and I saw potential to be a finalist this season. Seriously, I thought Chelsie did a great job of harnassing Roshon’s hip-hop skills in this cha-cha…some of those turns he did were SICK. However, I knew Len would hate it – and that’s going to be the biggest problem with Roshon, I’m afraid. The hip-hop in the cha-cha worked out ok this week, but I don’t see any possible way to work those same kinds of moves into a quickstep next week. Roshon will have to legitimately learn how to dance – but I think he can do it. He seems to have a great deal of natural skill, and if he can focus all of that restless energy – he can be a force to be reckoned with. Especially with his speed – I think my jaw dropped at how fast and intricate a lot of his footwork was. And perhaps most interesting to me were his hips – he almost seems TOO flexible, where most male contestants suffer from stiff hips the first few weeks. I’m excited to see what Chelsie can do with him!
7.) Jack & Anna – I can admit when I was wrong – and I will admit that I did underestimate Jack
This routine was far more impressive & entertaining than I would have imagined – I loved the energy these two have together. I think they may very well be the most well-matched couple this season
Jack seems to have great posture and some very nice arms, but needs to work a bit on his footwork…saw a few wonky moments. I don’t think he’ll have any problems with showmanship, though – he was totally playing to both Anna & the audience tonight, and with ease. Potential struggles? He is one of the older cast members (pretty sure he’s the oldest guy), so he may not have the same energy that Roshon & Jaleel inject into their dancing. He also seems to be really, really hard on himself – very much a perfectionist. I’m hoping he & Anna can strike a nice balance between hard work and good clean fun
8./9.) TIE: Donald & Peta and Maria & Derek – I think these two suffered a similar fate tonight: two not-bad couples that just got lost in the shuffle of the first half of the show, while the 2nd half was packed with big personalities and big routines. Maria seemed very tentative (and very nervous!), but seemed to have quite a bit of potential – her biggest obstacle right now seems to be her own nerves, and I think once she relaxes a bit, she’ll find that the choreography will become easier to remember and execute. And like so many model-types before her, she seems to have a few balance issues – hopefully Derek can help her become more steady in her turns. But she’s pretty, she’s vivacious, and she’s got definite potential to grow. Donald, on the other hand, seems to have the opposite problem that Maria does – while she’s too tentative, he’s too much of a go-getter out on the floor. This guy has a ton of energy (which is great!) but I think it may have gotten the better of him tonight. He attacked this cha-cha head-on, but there were times were he looked a bit flaily and out-of-control – like he may have taken Peta’s head off had she gotten too close.
I love his enthusiasm, but like Roshon, he may have to really work on actually focusing it – but I do think Donald is really ready to work, and also has a great deal of potential. I could see either of these 2 being a dark horse further along in the season, if they maintain steady progress each week.
10.) Melissa & Maks – I had high hopes for Melissa, but I’m afraid she suffered from the jitters worse than anyone else this week – and it really affected her performance. The best way I can describe this cha-cha is “odd” – she did all of her moves and never lost time, but I don’t feel like she really nailed any of it…everything was almost there, but just not quite. Oddly enough, I think she did better on the faster, more intricate parts (like all the sequences of turns), but seemed to get fouled up on the slower, simpler stuff (like side-by-side open work) - and Maks, PUH-LEASE, work on her arms! She’s got nice long ones – she just needs to learn to extend them! Do I think she’s really in danger of heading home? Nah – but I do think she got a bit lost, wedged between two much more memorable routines (Sherri & William). If she continues to get lost in the shuffle week after week, I do think she could run the risk of getting forgotten in voters’ minds, even with Maks’ fans behind her – because if tonight was any indicator, this could truly be the most competitive season yet. Everyone is gonna need to step out with very well-executed, very memorable, very entertaining routines each week in order to stick around. There isn’t going to be any room for “just ok”. Luckily, I think she’ll feel much more comfortable with the quickstep next week, and will be able to just put this cha-cha behind her and move on.
11.) Martina & Tony – I wish I could say I was wrong about Martina, because she seems very laid-back and sweet, but she unfortunately turned out like I thought she would: less “fierce” and more “zen”. I found this foxtrot to be very…flat. No big moments of impact, no real fight in it – just a very calm stroll. I’m not sure if it was nerves or just how Martina is, but her moves just seemed…I don’t know, without real purpose? I mean, she would extend her arm, but there wouldn’t be any real conviction behind it – a sort of “Yeah, I’m extending my arm, just cause I can – no real reason why.” I’m not sure if that makes sense or not, but that’s the impression I got. Once again, I’ll chalk it up to first-week nervousness, but I worry that this just may be Martina – just calm to the point of being a non-event. Will definitely be interesting to see how she copes with the jive next week – there’s really no room for “zen” in the jive. I’m hoping Tony can somehow concoct some choreography that kinda forces her out of her shell a bit.
12.) Gavin & Karina – Even Gavin did better than I thought tonight! But I’m still kinda worried for him – I think he’s definitely insecure about his dancing, and it tends to show when he’s on the floor. He had a few moments where he looked kinda lost, and a few moments where he looked kinda silly, but overall the energy was good – now he just needs to bring the technique up to speed. The question is: can he do it by next week? Because if he can’t – I’m afraid it’s curtains for these two. They just are not making a huge impact, and I’m still not sold that Gavin’s heart is 100% in the competition – he seems to joke a lot, and I haven’t decided if it’s because he’s nervous or because he just doesn’t care much. I think that attempting the show while he’s on tour is probably a big mistake, but he has one last chance to make a splash next week…just one problem: it’s with the jive, and I’m afraid he may look terribly awkward doing it
His hat might fly off. But who knows – he may surprise me.
So concludes my week 1 power rankings – thankfully, since no one is getting eliminated, they really don’t mean jack
But here’s another piece of interesting food for thought: all these high scores? Yeah, they’re just making things even closer…remember, the more total points awarded, the smaller the difference in percentage points. So by seemingly wielding all of this overscoring power…the judges are actually giving the viewers more power to choose who goes home. Interesting paradox, eh?
But let’s hear you guys’ thoughts on tonight’s show!

Excellent Court!!! Wow, what a great night of dancing. The best first night of dancing ever on DWTS!!!
My thoughts:
1. Jaleel and Kym – “Be nice to the geeky boys…because they grow up to be handsome men” So true. I loved them. They were dazzling, full of grace, flawlessness, and charm. Impressive.
2. Katherine and Mark – Beautiful first dance….elegant and she was so pretty.
3. Chelsie and Roshon – Wow, I wasn’t expecting him to be this good, but, he was. Powerful first dance! I loved his energy. His coordination was unreal. Loved the John Travolta and MJ moves. Just excellent.
4. William and Cheryl – HOT! HOT HOT!! He oozed it all out there. He was a little stiff in a few spots, but, otherwise super. Props to Cheryl too for matching his steaminess in their moves together too. You can tell she is loving him and his dancing and vice versa. They are full of charisma. I loved his humbleness. When he relaxes and really let’s go, watch out.
5. Anna and Jack – wow, impressive first dance. Charming and nice frame. He was light on his feet and, what’s more, entertaining. He looked like he loved every second of it.
6. Maks and Melissa – Was this really Half Pint? She was fast, fun, furious, and sexy! She took on some complicated moves versus the others and pulled them off. Like William, once she really REALLY lets go, watch out! I love that our happy Maks is back!
7. Gladys and Tristan -GO GLADYS! GIRL GAVE IT! She got a little lost in the choreography in the middle a little, but, hey, Girl GAVE IT UP! She really showed the Pips a thing or two. PROPS to Tristan too. They had the entertainment factor is spades. I wanted to get up and dance like Carrie Anne. Loved their facial expressions as well.
8. Tony and Martina – OMG, was this really MARTINA?? She was so beautiful! She had such beautiful lines, elegance, and gracefulness. She was like a bird out there. My….I am so proud of her and I loved her humbleness too. GOOD JOB TONY as well! You made her into a “Lady”! Gorgeous!
9. Derek and Marie – Marie was a little stiff in a few places, but, wow, the potential is there for her to be great once she let’s up some. Derek was so cute and sexy too. I loved her legs and how Derek has this way of working and featuring them with his own. Beautiful, fun, and full of charm! I have no doubt these two will be rising up the ladder in the coming weeks.
10. Sherri and Val – This dance was full of personality. Very cheeky too …but, was there too much of it? Their biggest challenge will be her likable factor. She’s too in your face, but, I loved Val.
11. Donald and Peta – Hmmm, it started out a little slow and stiff for him, but, after he warmed up, he gave up some sexy, powerful, and fun moves. I liked his knee bumps up and down especially.
12. Karina and Gavin – Lots of charm, flow, and romance. I loved his smile. His timing was off some and you could tell he was really nervous, but, great for a first dance. He was better than I thought he would be.
Can’t wait to read everyone’s reviews.
William did seem a bit “dead behind the eyes” during his cha cha, didn’t he? I saw virtually little to no chemistry with Cheryl. Katherine, also, was a bit like that and it really bugged me. I’m not sure if she always looks like a Barbie doll or if it was just nerves.
I’m afraid I have to agree with about Gavin. Hopefully he’ll improve enough to hang around a few more weeks
Tons of overscoring tonight, I agree. I don’t know if it’s because of the fact no one is going home tomorrow night, or the judges just really thought everyone was that good. Loved Sherri, but I’m putting my bias aside and definitely saying she was overscored.
Maybe next week they’ll be tougher? Two tougher dances and an elimination might make the judges crack down. Great job Courtney!
Jaleel Impressed like I hoped. Katherine was lovely and will reign ballroom. I assure she will do jive fine but I feel she does have that glassy eyed look and the tears?! It was one dance, overscored. I do wish she was paired with someone else. Mark is too much even toned down and imagine him with three wins.
Yeah I agree William is hot & he can move but I think whoever said he has a little head that is disproprtioned from his body is totally correct lol that is what my mother said watching him. haha
Still I think Katherine was amazing & hope she lasts, & I did not want to like Sherri but she was good & that dance made me fall in love with Val, never liked him till then.
Lastly Bruno was wrong cause the hottest package this season is that darling beautiful Irish man with the sparkling eyes who was the sweetest thing ever partnering Gladys Knight! Fab job they did!!
For me, the weakest of the night were Sherry, Gavin and Martina. Gavin was sweet, but needs to work on technique and in no way do I think Sherry was better than Melissa. Marina, was decent, but not nearly as smooth and sexy as she needs to be.
Jack wowed me, more than I thought he would. Roshon had too much hip hop in his dance, he’s going to need to lose that.
Gladys is a legend and at 67, I thought she did pretty well.
William is nice eye candy to look at but I wonder how he will do when frame is important.
Katherine in my opinion was overscored. Nice dance, but not worthy of the scores they got.
I think it is still Jaleel’s to lose. He reminds me of Hines.
Great show tonight for a first night of dancing.
Weakest dancers tonight? Gavin and Martina. For their sakes, I hope they do better next week.
“one of the most innovative and well-executed cha-chas I’ve ever seen on the show” Yeah, Roshon and Chelsie!!! Chelsie mixed the hip hop/freestyle into chacha so well!! I will be looking forward to further display of Roshon’s flexibility!!!! Hated, hated Chel’s dress
I thought Maria didn’t dance too much? Was posing a lot. But her arm and hand placement is so beautiful. Jack & Anna were so charming! Donald and Peta were wild lol. Also did not like her costume. Gavin, I liked his jokes
I thought Sherri’s dance was too bumpy & upbeat for a foxtrot? Melissa, I agree with Court, all of her moves seem not-there-yet. Not great costuming either. William, gotta admit I reacted like the audience and the judges
I don’t know why I think his footwork is great. Maybe bcos it’s simple, but I really think his did good footwork. Martina, I’d really hate to see this tennis legend go first, but based on entertainment factor she wasn’t very entertaining…. Katherine Jenkins as expected excelled, worried about her doing latin dances. I want to see Gladys and Tristan every week! Jaleel was superb.
Overscoring………….. I liked that they give kind comments, makes for a great season opener. But they shouldn’t have inflated the scores……. Really, 6s should be present on week 1.
for me
1) Katherine and Mark – GRACEFUL dancing (especially the arms) and character to boot…blew me away because i was not expecting it at all..but she was overscored by a point or so
2) Roshon and Chelsie – im biased because these are my Favs…but wow boys got some moves. thought they were underscored by a point or so
3) Jaleel and Kym – very smooth!!! but his lines looked a little funky or forced to me (room for improvement) overscored by two points
4) Gladys and Tristan – I lOVed this!! fierce, cheeky, diva – like choreography for a queen. was pretty indifferent to tristan before this, but boy did he do right by this choreography (misteps but actually didnt mind the score)
5)sherri and val – no comment of prior training, but i thought this routine was entertaining and cute ( accurate score in my oppinion)
6)william and cheryl – yes he is hot and yes he has potential…but it looked like cheryl was dancing with the terminator tonight ( overscored by at LEAST 2 points)
7) maria and derek – i think nerves played a part (would hate to go first on premiere night) but chick is kinda stiff and i fear how she will dance away from derek…still pretty good technique (scored accurately)
8) Donald and Peta – I laughed throughout this entire routine…in a good way though. Donald has an awesome smile and a ton of energy and potential, but he needs to dial it back and smooth it out (scored accurately)
9 & 10 tie) Jack and Anna – i love anna and thought this was an adorable routine. jack was not half bad but clunky in a lot of places ( overscored by 3 points)
9 & 10) Melissa and Maks – i dont know if it was because i was expecting more…but this was a HUGE dissapointment. Her spins were nice, but thats about it. The routine seemed akward and disjointed
11) Gavin and karina – this was actually a lot better than i expected…and im tempted to rank it above mel and maks. they seem sweet together and it was good choreography by karina, except for that hideous jump they put in there wtf. (scored accurately)
12) martina and tony -she did okay…which is an improvement from what i was expecting, but still was not very good. she was much more graceful than hope solo out of hold, but thats not saying much. i liked it enough (overscored by a point or two)
I thought everyone did great tonight! Judges sure passed out those 8s and 9s like candy though.
Tom was his usual awesome self, and Brooke actually seemed a bit animated tonight.
The over scoring started though when they gave Jack and Anna’s dance 2 8′s. If you give that dance 8′s you gotta give most of the other 8′s and Katherine and Jaleel 9′s.
My rankings just on pure enjoyment
1. Katherine and Mark
2. Gladys and Tristan
3. Roshon and Chelsie
4. Jaleel and Kym
5. William and Cheryl
6. Sherri and Val
7. Donald and Peta
8. Gavin and Karina
9. Maria and Derek
10. Jack and Anna
11. Melissa and Maks
12. Martina and Tony
Also based on tonight the most vulnerable would be- Gavin, Martina, Melissa, and Sherri. The first 3 for dancing, The last for being too divisive. If DialIdol is accurate this year we have severely underestimated Martina’s appeal.
I hate how all the couples are only separated by 6 points! It could seriously lead to one of the 23′s going home if they are not careful!
Andrea, for years so many people whined the show was fixed so maybe they’re trying to leave it up to the fans’ votes mostly. As for Dialidol, it’s not 100% accurate. In fact, I believe there was an article about that website at some point in the past here on this website. Maybe one of the writers remembers it and can pull it up for us?
Very entertaining show tonight. I was impressed with the quality of dancing, especially considering this was the season opener.
The only troubling element was the scoring. The judges did some really “off” scoring tonight. Sometimes it seemed so inconsistent and not based on the dancing at all. I know that I shouldn’t be surprised, but it disappoints me all the same.
I am happy that there is no elimination this week. I never liked the “one strike and you’re out” competition. It will be helpful to voters to see 2 different dances for each celeb.
Courtney, I think you did an excellent analysis!
While I thought the dancing was good on the whole and a solid start to the season, the overscoring and hype were just as noticeable. All things considered, here’s my1st night rankings:
#1Jaleel – Smooth and charismatic, nice rapport with Kym. 9s a bit high and actually not stand him in good stead down the line (#roomforimprovementfactor).
#2Katherine – Great improvement from practice and best of the ladies tonight which is quite a feat considering the late start. Nice to see Mark reign it in too. Thought 9s were high, but considering the lack of fanbase and a penis….And I think that fake expression/smile is a trademark of hers, Court. Now let’s see how she takes to Latin.
#3William – I actually thought the connection and chemistry between he & Cheryl was amongst the best of all couples. He moves well for such a big guy and while there’s still much work to do, not a bad start considering they’re about 1.5 week behind most other pairs. Agreed Quickstep will be a true test for him.
#4 Donald – Okay, too much, but OH SO FUN!
#5 Roshon – Kids got sick speed and precision but hip hop has a very limited place in this competition.
#6 Sherri – Could improve in most areas but appreciate her musicality and enthusiasm.
#7 Maria – Not bad, not great. With her lack of hip and abundance of beautiful lines, thinking she’ll be a better Ballroomer.
#8-10
Gladys – Sista’s got moves. But for reason’s Courtney said, think she’ll go ultimately fall somewhere at the midpaccers.
Melissa – Underwhelming. Her dancing looks small and timid (especially next to Maks) and I saw little connection with her partner nor the audience. She reminds me a bit of Chynna in that there’s lots of dots but they don’t quite come together. Also like Chynna, think Ballroom may be more her forte.
Jack – Forgettable. Promising but it’s almost like he’s trying so hard it’s too hard. Relax and let if flow naturally, cause IT looks to be there.
#11 Gavin – Relatable but not a well known and standout dancer in a season chock full of em. Maybe not quitting his day job is a good thing in this case.
#12 Martina – Chargrin but not surprise, the most ackward mover of the bunch and, with Tony, uneventful as Court says. But so admire the class she’s showing.
The best week 1 of all seasons! No one sucked! Gavin surprised me the most. He was a bit stiff on top but had great musicality on his feet. I totally thought he would suck badly.I was expecting more out of Melissa and Maks but I think they’ll have a strong 2nd week
Gladys Knight was the cutest dancer of the night, Jaleel and Kym didn’t disappoint, and Roshon grew on me and I’d like to see him go far.
Imo, rating from top to bottom:
1. Jaleel/Kym
2. Katherine/Mark
3. Roshon/Chelsie
4. William/Cheryl
5. Sherri/Val
6.Jack/Anna
7. Gladys/Tristan
8. Maria/Derek
9. Donald/Peta
10.Melissa/Maksim
11. Martina/Tony
12.Gavin/Karina
Btw, is it me or were there a lot of camera goofs tonight? I am referring to the cameramen running to get out of the way.
The interesting thing is that they were all overscored so it doesn’t matter too much either way. I don’t think anyone in particular had a score that was way too high or way too low. Although, it’s crazy that they gave such high scores on the first show. That gives them no where to go with future scores. I think they should start with scores in the 2-5 point range on the first show and then go up from there.
Gavin Degraw has a pretty good fanbase though…I’d say either Martina or Melissa out first.
Gavin Degraw has a pretty good fanbase though…I’d say either Martina or Melissa out first.
And William was overscored, Roshon’s cha-cha was way better.
Wow! William had so much power and smoothly executed. Absolutely the best cha cha of the night. Cheryl and William is going to continue to improve and will be fireworks this season.Judges are judging him very high.
Roshon is an energetic dancer, but Chelsie should know better! That is not cha cha. He’s got terribel technique.
Gladys is suave and amazing. But the more complicated dances and more physical dance will get to her.
Jaleel has great showmansip, but judges are not judging him hard enough. Footwork is flat and posture not solid.
Katherine is another surprise, but her personality is annoying. They are inflating her, because of the lack of fan base. She’s not very likeable either. Her latin will lack the spice!
Jack was way overscored!
Sherri is feel good!
My best 3: William, Jaleel, Sherri
Guys were more impressive this time around than the women but everyone stepped up. There were some egos that annoyed me…Sherri and Roshon…I like it when the star is humble. Really excited to see who can really dance next week. I also worry about the bar being set too high for the first week with such high scores given . We’ll just have to see how that plays into later weeks.
Was it just me, or did William seem totally uncomfortable with all the ‘thank you abc!’ ‘he’s the hottest package!’ talk? Looked like he wanted to melt into the floor. Awkward :/ Guess if there’s tit for tat, then the males have to get harrassed from time to time, too, but yikes…
Tristan and Gladys were the most fun to watch, IMO. Seems like several folks who got ‘duds’ (at least as far as dance talent goes) last season got a little bit of redemption this go around–i.e. Tristan, Peta, and Val.
Did Maks’s spray tan person get paid by the hour, or what? Not sure he’s ever looked that orange. But the shot of him scruffy when he met Melissa was super cute.
Awesome season opener!
We thought William felt uncomfortable with the comments. Brooke also was rude IMHO when she “translated” what Tristan said.
I pretty sure Chelsie knows (or should know) that Len does not like the hip-hop unless it’s the freestyle in the finales. My thought is that she wanted viewers to get a glimpse of roshon’s hip hop dance skills. That cha cha is now one of my favorite cha-cha dances on the show in all 14 seasons. Chelsie’s dress made me think of Lacey, but I liked it. The practice videos of him worried me, but he seemed to have more content and a faster dance than some of the other cha-chas. My last thought is that Disney needs to get Chelsie a guest appearance with Roshon on Shake it up.
The show did a smart thing in picking such a lovable group of people. I got tired of “controversial” stars with little dance talent. Not sure if the producers new whatgreat dance skills this group would bring, but I love it so far.
Even Britney Spears gave a shout out to Roshon on twitter. Check Chelsie’s twitter for that.
@ Harriett
I too loved the cha cha! I fear because len slammed the hip hop portion of it, i think it will unfortunately go underrated, when i actually think it was one of chelsie’s better choreographic ventures. I loved how it was sytycd esque with the story behind it unlike a lot of other cha cha chas tonight which were just strictly dancing…yet it also had a nice mix of cha cha content and fun
Please leave Dial Idol off this site. I’m tired of explaining why it’s not accurate for DWTS and if they manage to get it right (and they rarely predict an actual person leaving) it’s purely by luck. It’s just not designed to work with DWTS nor is the sample size remotely close.
Overscoring because of complaining fans? Well…fans are still complaining aren’t they. I think they were being kind on the first night and I think most couples will be in for a shock next week. Including Jaleel and Katherine.
I think Martina and Melissa’s fanbases likely dwarf Gavin’s, but we’ll see. I could be over estimating Melissa’s.
Wow, my favorite premiere EVER! Definitely going to be a really competitive season.
Jaleel/Kym- Charm and charisma for DAYS! On top of that, he is an absolute natural! I saw a few wonky lines in his arms, but I thought this was absolutely lovely. 24
Gladys/Trisan- I love Gladys SO much!
So sweet and humble and she just went out there and had a blast tonight. She and Tristan were nonstop joy out there. And Gladys actually did extremely well. 22
William/Cheryl- I wouldn’t say it was the second coming of Gilles at all, but I thought it was good. He and Cheryl definitely brought the heat and he has good rhythm and the potential to do very well. A little clunky and careful though. 20 or 21
Katherine/Mark-This was definitely my favorite foxtrot of the night! Katherine’s arms are superb, so fluid, graceful, and musical. She also has pretty darn good posture. Like Courtney, I only saw some problems in her feet. Interested to see how the Jive will go. 24
Sherri/Val- This foxtrot was very cute and fun. Sherri does know how to really put a smile on your face. However, it did have a few moments of being a little uneventful. Good job though. 21
Roshon/Chelsie- This guy definitely lived up to the expectations I had for him. Killer cha-cha-cha! Very slick and cool, but the actual cha-cha content was well-executed. He’s very quick on his feet, and a great mover. Can’t wait to see more from these two! 23
Jack/Anna- I was surprised by Jack! He did better than I thought he would. This dance was very entertaining and he looked great in hold. Out of hold, I did see potential issues in being steady and maybe a little stiff. 21
Maria/Derek- These two came out of the gate with a very nice number! Maria’s got great placement and very nice lines. She was terrified and stiff, but I think as she gets more comfortable, we’ll see some fantastic things, because she’s got tons of potential. And I’m pretty confident Derek can bring that out of her. 22
Donald/Peta- Donald had tons of energy and entertainment. But he did get a little too into it and it made his technique sloppy at times. Great job though. 21
Melissa/Maks- I had the same feeling Courtney did about this. She did pretty well, but she didn’t really have anything for me to get excited about. She really got lost in the shuffle for me. She’s a little clunky and needs to move a little more, but she’s got potential too. 19
Martina/Tony- I love Martina, and she looked absolutely gorgeous! As for the dance, she did have a nice poise and elegance about her, but she really needs to work on her turns and arms. 18
Gavin/Karina- I agree with Carrie Ann when she said Gavin has a gentle charisma, it’s very refreshing. Again, pretty stiff and wobbly. I think if he becomes more confident, he’ll improve a good amount. 18
Great 1st night. I definitely think Melissa was nervous but she shouldn’t be. She performed live on stage for over a year during the nationwide tour of LHOP The Musical in 2008-2009. I even met her twice after the show. Also, Kirstie Alley is going to be getting votes for her too so it is not just Melissa’s fanbase here.
William definitely overscored. And he didn’t seem to know the viewers that well either.
Agree about Gavin being in trouble. I think Martina’s fanbase will save her 2-3 weeks.
What an awesome show!!
1. Jaleel and Kym were just magic on the dance floor. I couldn’t take my off of them. The chemistry these two have is off the charts already. This pairing will be one tough team to beat.
2. Gladys and Tristan – What a treat! Lovely moves, lovely pairing, and just a pleasure all around.
3. Katherine and Mark just on technical alone. Is she the ringer this season?
4. William and Cheryl – The crowd went crazy. This dance suited him, but the jury is still out. A Gilles he is not!
5. Sherri and Val – The song was perfect for her. I think the rumors were validated last night. Thats all I am gonna say.
6. Maria and Derek – Kind of forgettable. Granted, she did dance first, but stiff competition this season, she will have to stand out more.
7. Donald and Peta – Those legs.. LOL I burst out laughing. Donald is Mr Personality on the dancefloor, these two could be a threat for one of the frontrunners.
8. Roshon was okay, not my cup of tea.
9. Jack and Anna, their costumes were too cute! And I love Jack.
10. Melissa and Maks – Where do I start?? Trainwreck. Messy and I think she lost her way, kind of like a deer in the headlights look. I think Maks tries too hard and it shows.
11. Martina and Tony – Great effort, unfortunately, Marina and Tony lack the excitement factor… Could be in trouble.
12. Gavin and Karina – Better than I thought it would be. I hated the hat!! It looked like he was wearing his touring hat for the foxtrot. Could be in trouble as well.
These couples have to kill it every week, one off week, and one of the frontrunners could be leaving. This is going to be a great season… WooHoo!!
Meant to say above:
1. Jaleel and Kym were just magic on the dance floor. I couldn’t take my *eyes* off of them.
The band killed (and not in a good way) Roshon’s and William’s songs.
Jack, Gavin, and Martina had awful songs.
My 13 yr old said (upon seeing William & Cheryl on stage as they went to commercial), “H-e-l-l-o
Hmm? His head is tiny for his muscles.” ROTFLMAO….she DID NOT read this site either !!! “)
G.C.B.—look on twitter and other forums, Martina is getting tons on votes compared to Gavin & Jack. Doesn’t mean I’m saying he’ll be ousted, because there’s still week 2 dances to do. BUT….the number of fans doesn’t mean that they all vote. Some of his fans didn’t even think they voted last night—-they think they just vote next week. Uniformed fans hurt a celeb too.
Also, MArk better check his gym bag….I think Tony stole his spats last night lol!!
Wow. What an awesome first night of dancing. I was very interested to see these rankings this morning, as it can go so many different ways, and does in the comments! This is truly going to be a powerhouse season, which I just love. I agree that everybody was overscored last night, from the top to the bottom. And I hate when the judges hand out 8′s and 9′s so early, because, like Courtney said, you can only get a 30! Is everyone going to be getting 30′s in week 2 or 3? Anyway, that is besides the point.
Here are my rankings, based purely on which routines made me smile. I was quite surprised who came out my favorite and who my votes went to, as they weren’t close to who I thought I’d like before the show.
1) Sherri and Val. I smiled ear to ear the whole time they were on the screen. I loved Sherri’s enthusiasm, I didn’t find her annoying or arrogant at all. I thought she was hilarious. I thought Val was great! And last season he left me with a bad taste in my mouth, to say the least. I had thought he was…skeevy. Shows what a difference a different partner can make I guess. These two got all my votes last night. Will they next week? I don’t know. I tend to vote on a week to week basis until I’m absolutely in love with a pair, which usually happens around mid-season.
2) Katherine and Mark. Another pair I thought I wouldn’t love (like, but not love) because of the pro. I thought they were elegant and classy, and she just glowed. I loved her demeanor, I felt she was truly happy and loving her experience. I do fear, however, the latin rounds for Katherine.
3) Roshon and Chelsie. Loved it! I love Chelsie, she is one of my favorite pros. I hope they can keep this energy throughout the competition. I have the opposite reaction to them though–I fear for Roshon in the ballroom rounds.
4)Jaleel and Kym. I thought their routine was excellent and he did a wonderful job. I can’t exactly put my finger on what put me off about him last night, but I think it was because he didn’t seem happy many times in the celeb-whateveryoucallit? I don’t know if I’m sensing a (slight) sense of attitude from him or what, but something was off. I hope he proves me wrong in the coming weeks!
5) Gladys and Tristan. What a joy these two were! I loved that she got out there and did her thing, and she and Tristan both seem like such sweethearts and like they are enjoying each other’s company so much. I worry about Gladys in the dances where you need lots and lots of stamina. I hope her quickstep next week holds up!
6) Gavin and Karina. I know I have them ranked much higher than most. Really, it’s my love for Karina that makes me do so. I could watch her dance for hours. Gavin did seem to be having fun and trying, but I worry that he isn’t trying quite as hard as the rest. They’ll have to make much more of an impact to stay around.
7) Maria and Derek. I could watch Derek dance for hours too, which is also why I have this couple ranked so high. I really liked them when they first danced–but that was before I watched everyone else and saw how amazing they all were. Maria seemed very stiff in comparison, and it looked as though Derek was doing most of the dancing. I hope they can make more of a spalsh in the coming weeks, or I fear they will be booted early. My goodness they are pretty together though! And that blue on Derek! I think it is my new favorite color on him. (it used to be red).
8) Donald and Peta. They were great too. But I agree with others who I think said it seemed too frantic or something? Like he was overdoing it. I know he supposedly has some rabid fanbase behind him, but I think there will be many rabid fanbases this season. I could see them being a shock boot. And I don’t know, there is something about Peta I don’t like. She seems like she very much wants to be the center of attention. I would have rather had Lacey, who I don’t even love. ::shrugs::
9)Jack and Anna. I hate ranking them so low, because I love Anna so much, too. And it’s not like they were bad. They just weren’t as good as everyone else.
10) William and Cheryl. This was the most grossly overscored of the night to me. Seriously? While I was watching it I was thinking, they are going to rip him a new one! Boy, was I wrong! He seemed kind of shy, and they’re hyping him of the Beatles of DWTS with all the screaming and stuff. He’s hot, but geeze. There are plenty just as good looking, and even more so. Oh, and he is SO not Giles.
11) Melissa and Maks. I was really excited to see them dance–and then I was very disappointed. Melissa seemed frantic, a la Donald. I don’t know if it was the routine or what. And I swear I saw Maks himself slip in two or three places. I could see these two being a shock boot, too.
12) Martina and Tony. Again, I hate ranking so low because I love Tony. Martina seemed sweet and lovely and hard working, but compared to all of the other couples? It was very slow. I was bored while they were dancing. I hate it, but it’s how I felt.
I really don’t have a clue as to how this season could go. I think we’re in for some great dancing and lots of surprises!
Here is my assessment of the night:
1) Derek and Maria: Thought they should have received higher scores than they did. Would have liked to have seen them coverthe floor a bit more.
2) Jack and Anna: Anna’s shoes were distracting for me. Agreed w/Len re: his posture. Liked the “gentle chemistry” of the team.
3) Donald and Peta: Again thought they should have scored higher. Peta needs to reign him in a bit so next week the lack of control turns into refinement.
4) Gavin and Karina: Did a decent job. Loved CA’s comment about “gentle, gentle, HI-YA” arm movements. Still questioning his commitment though.
5) Roshon and Chelsie: Fresh, young and just downright fun!
I thought Chelsie showed off his personality perfectly. Great intro for this team! There is plenty of time to make the transition from Hip Hop to ballroom dancer and I think the kid will bring it.
6) Val and Sherri: Baby Bro brought his A-Game! He definitely has the patience of a saint! Overall-a good job. Sherri needs to tone down the hyperness to be taken seriously in the weeks to come.
7) Maks and Melissa: I have to admit, this was my biggest disappointment of the night. Maks defaulted to choreographing “walking a few beats” at the beginning of their performance. They”ll need to step it up next week. Hopefully it was just first night jitters.
8) William and Cheryl: This was the biggest surprise of the night for me. I agree that they may have been overscored a tiny bit. I want to see how he does next week before counting these two out completely.
9) Tony and Martina: Love this partnership! They truly admire and respect each other. I am hoping that next week Martina will relax more now that she knows what to expect. I would hate to see an early exit for these two.
10) Katherine and Mark: My favorite dance of the night. I came close to tears a couple of times, and then nearly lost it when I saw her tearing up at the judges comments. Absolutely beautiful. Mark can thank his lucky stars for being gifted with a truly gorgeous partner both on the inside and out.
11) Tristan and Gladys: LOL at the mention of the “default move” in the rehersal pkg! Love this pairing, although did anyone else think Tristan was a little distant last night? He seemed to be out of place at times to me. As mentioned above-I also thought it was a mis-step on Brooke’s part re: translating. If she was going that route, she should have done the same with William.
12) Jaleel and Kym: Totally lived up to my expectations! Kym may very well be on her way to reclaiming that MBT!
This has got to be one of the best premiers I have ever seen! I’m hoping the positive vibe can carry through the rest of the season!
My turn (In order of appearence, I’m not going to talk about scores)
Maria – Gorgeous. Need a little bit more relax and hipaction. Good freezes. Derek put something new on his chacha. She needs to get loose on latin, but OK. I’m guessing her quickstep is going to be good. She has a lot to improve, but she’s with Derek. Think she doesn’t have much fanbase but Derek has all his “Derekets” =p
jack – He has the mojo, but was off the time sometimes. I felt him a little tense, but ok. He wasn’t bad, but not that good.
donald – This guy knows how to shake. I had no expectations about him (was waiting for another MWP), so this was incredible. He has charisma and personality. And he’s a footballer.Great choreography. If he can do well on ballroom, this couple goes to the top.
gavin – Needs to improve the posture, shoulders and arms, and footwork. He looked like he was nervous. But the choreography was good and he and Karina looked good. What can we expect into a jive?
Roshon – Love this song. Lacey, is that you? He’s good. He had good timming, but, IMO, need to improve the footwork. He has personality, but sometimes seems “too much”, you know?, wich makes he loses charisma. I’m happy for Chels bc she gets her best partner, but let’s see what he can do on quickstep. If he would dance the chacha 4 weeks from now, it could be memorable.
Sherri – Love her. She has personality and charisma. Loved the fact that the rehearsal package focused on her, not in Val. She needs to improve her footwork, the body contact was missing, but good job. Let’s see if she has stamina for the jive.
Melissa – (this Maksim’s tan is strange…) Bad tecnique. Ok for a first week, but the bar was set high. Bad for her.
Wiliam – Needs to be more sharp and find himself. To me, right now, he’s too much Gilles… The guy can dance, no doubt. He has chemestry with Cheryl. The chicas go crazy with him, but he has a lot to improve. However, he’s with Cheryl. She did a miracle with Rob last season, so, with this guy, she’s there for TMBT. Let’s see what he can do on standard. (Hope they last until Argentine Tango)
martina – Better than I thought. It was a little bland (as tony stuff), but OK.
katherine – Gorgeous. But she kinda smells shocking elimination… I don’t know why. Not right now, but in the middle of the competition. Hopes she show personality on the Jive (not 50′s like, please, Mark). Great fox, however, but not as good as Kristi’s.
Jaleel – Charismatic. kym wonderful. I felt that was missing a little more smoothness and he can improve his posture, but good fox.
Gladys – She was having a good time =] Very well for her age. I think Tristan took the best of her. Very good. She needs to improve the footwork and armplacement, but good. Thanks god (and the producers) she’s not going to jive next week.
Oh, after reading Ms. Taz’s comment (and I know someone else said it upthread, too, I had forgotten)…I could not believe Brooke said “In ENGLISH, what he said was…” after Tristan said his mother was excited he was dancing with Gladys. I was horrified. Tristan does speak English, Brookebot! Tristan’s face just seemed annoyed and a little ticked (I don’t blame him) when she said that.
A really great start to the season! I don’t mind the high scores so much because pretty much everyone was included in the love-fest and the standard WAS really high.
Some random thoughts:
- Maria could grow to be technically good but she doesn’t seem to have that into-the-moment quality about her. Kinda like Brooke B. for me.
- Jack was solid if a bit shaky. Anna is my girl but I feel like she should step back from the silly, colorful, goofy choreo and styling. It evokes bringing content to an otherwise not-so-good dance (like with Sugar Ray or Carson) and I think Jack is better then that
- Donald could go all the way, judging by the performance in a choreo I honestly didn’t like. Aggressive and sexy seems to be Peta’s style but I think she overdid it. Donald has great potential though
- Gavin was okay, he needs to step it up if he wants to survive in this competition
- Roshon, I don’t know. He is at the same time brilliant and not really what the show is about. We’ll see if he has the discipline to reign it in.
- Sherri I wasn’t feeling so much. The jokes were far better than the dancing and even those may become annoying. The height difference is too much for me
- Melissa, not so great kinda like Sherri. The height is also the problem. I can see the potential for drama with Maks more then for great dancing
- William I felt uncomfortable for. By the way his small head doesn’t bother me but the fact he looks exactly like Denise Richards does. All I see is Denise. As far as dancing goes, he has plenty of talent but the whole Cheryl is treating him like a piece of meat thing is a bit overboard for my liking and I think it could backfire because he doesn’t look to be comfortable with it. The third couple where I wish the height difference wasn’t as big.
- Martina- oh, how I wish she would cut loose more and have it look good (the dancing, her appearance is great). I’m rooting for them but they are probably the weakest link right now
- Katherine was very, very good. I tend to not like the dainty, cute females so much but I’m giving her a fair chance
- Gladys was pure joy. She did mess up in the middle and quite badly so. I’m thinking she has to learn to cover up her mistakes better. But the naturalness when she does it right is spectacular.
- Jaleel was exactly what everyone expected. To nitpick, I also sensed something from him like a “chip on his shoulder” vibe a little bit or “I have something to prove” but other then that- amazing.
@Violet: Good eye re-Maks’ slip(s). I caught it definitely once but wasn’t entirely sure. I didn’t mention it above in case it was just the camera angle, so I’m glad someone else caught it too.
12th) William and Cheryl: Yes he has a lot of potential but I really think that it wasn’t that much of a cha cha. It was more like a hodgepodge of dance movies that suited him. Qucikcter is going to decide if he is a person who is only going to be good at Latin dances (which I think he will be only good at those just don’t see him transforminging into a ballroom person).
11th) Gavin and Karina: He needs confidence plain and simple. footwork was pretty interesting.
10th) Melissa and Maks: Ok so I’ll start with the good news. Maks is back to normal. The bad news: she kept up with Maks but he is throwing too much at her too fast which cuased her to seem a little nervous.
9th)Maria and Derek: It was fun BUT I think she is going to be the contestant to improve over the course of the show that manages to get close to the finale butn ot make it in there.
8th) Martina and Tony: A little too safe BUT she did great.
7th) Donald and Peta: He is definately one to watch! He had a blast out there!
6th: Roshon and Chelsie: I honestly thought it was going to be 8, 8, 8 but he was really good!
5th) Gladys and Tristan: Defiantely my fav cha cha of the night. I really wish she would have gotten 8s.
4th) Sherri and Val: It was surprisingly really good. She had fun, choreography was great but the 8s were a bit much.
3rd) jack and Anna: It was fun and cute. Reminded me of a sitcom opening title credit though lol since it was so cutesy.
2nd) Katherine and Mark: It deserved 3 9s. It was that good.
1rst: Jaleel and Kym: Deserved three 9s.
Thank you for this post. Nice to hear good points from a rational observer. I’m bummed about the scoring being so high across the board. If you think moderating this site has been tough so far, just wait. Novices and various fans’ heads are going to explode in the coming weeks when things get jerked around. Anyway, I have a terrific martini recipe that incorporates a hangover cure in the mix! Let me know if you want it.
Seriously, William looked great from the neck down. His expression? Like he’s had a lobotomy. God love Gladys! And Jaleel. And Peta – Donald who? She blocked him out. In a good way.
Lastly, as for the band: They really sounded bad on a lot of the songs (International Love and Glad You Came come immediately to mind) but at times they sounded good.
I am so loving all of your reviews and thoughts!
After a night to let the dances settle in, I have to say my fave couples as of right now are: William and Cheryl, Roshon and Chelsie, Derek and Maria, Gladys and Tristan, Tony and Martina, and (I can’t believe I’m saying this) Mark and Katherine. The verdict is still out for Maks & Melissa and Anna and Jack?
*have gotten all 8s
just wanted to clarify that
Band may have been in shock – didn’t I see on Tony’s (and another’s) twitter over the weekend that a DWTS band trumpet player passed away – there was a “in memorium” posted at the very end of the show, but don’t remember names and not sure if this was related. Unfortunately, not in a position at this time to research – just putting it out there!
I just wonder how many Little House references Melissa can throw into every episode lol She didd make me laugh whe nshe was like “there weren’t any cha cha on the prarire”
After rewatching the show last night, I agree with the complaints of overscoring. They judges are backing themselves into a wall. I agree with Courtney that no one overly “sucked,” but I was surprised to see so many 8′s and a few 9′s thrown around like beads at a Mardi Gras parade.
I wasn’t overly impressed with Martina or Gavin. And sadly, I wasn’t overly impressed with Melissa. She just seemed…awkward at times. Hopefully, it was just nerves.
While I think Roshon is a good dancer, I’m with Len about the too hip-hop cha-cha. I like a more traditional dance, but that’s just my opinion.
I think Maria has tons of potential if she can shake the nervousness, and I really liked Jack too. And Gladys blew me away. I was impressed that she and Tristan had good synchronicity, and I loved their dance. Like Courtney, I don’t think they’re in it for the long haul, but I think we can expect a good few weeks out of them.
One more thing about the over scoring …there is the real danger that the couple had better be spot on every week or they will incur the judge’s rath ( unless they are one of their “favorites “) Remember Ralph? He scored so high week one and then he never lived up to expectations. That was according to the judges and they raked him over the coals for it. If you score too high too early then you’ve got nowhere to go but lateral or down.
What an AMESOME night! I havn’t been happy with premire dancing since season 10 and really the overall standered this season is better ( Sorry Buzz Aldrin and Kate Gosselin
) My favorite couples are, even though it’s hard to say, are Martina and Tony, Sherri and Val, Gladys and Tristan, Donald and Peta, Maria and Derek, Katherina and Mark. Man, though, there is nobody I really dislike at all. It was just so much fun but i’m dreading eliminations this season.
ON the upside how about MARTINA, There was so much talk on twitter about how good she looked, i’m voting for for Martina, etc and she really was the underdog and just needs to relaz and Tony needs to work on her arms but this was such a classy elegant Foxtrot and I think it was memorable simply because of how opposite that is from the Martina we know. She is in a good place doing the Jive next week because she should fare well with that.
i just liked everything about last night.
I LOVE DANCING WITH THE STARS BUT I AM GETTING A BIT TIRED OF MAKS GRABBING TOM’S BEHIND IN EVERY EPISODE-PLEASE STOP!! THIS SEASON IS GOING TO BE HARD TO JUDGE-TOO MANY GOOD DANCERS-
Jack and Anna : Jack was a big surprise for me — definitely a performer — his foxtrot was light and airy, like it should be. I hope he sticks around long enough to show us what he can do.
Maria & Derek: I thought her nerves may have gotten the best of her — I thought her practice rehearsals looked so much better. I agree with others that the ballroom stuff might be more of where she will shine.
Melissa looked like a train wreck. I think it would have helped if Maks would have thrown in one of those “Kirstie falls”. He did slip in the beginning of the routine. If they fall=====sympathy scores, right? It did happen once before lol.
What a fun premiere! As Tom said, I’m so glad they ALL get to dance again before the first elimination. To me that’s the only legitimate way to do it. Wish it was that way every season.
The overscoring was unfortunate. When the judges dial it back, the celebs are in for a rude shock.
Jaleel – Great start. A lot to like here. Contender, no doubt, but I agree he needs to keep it light or risk turning people off.
Katherine – Well done. A very proper Welsh rose. Needs to lose the “ladylike” quality and not be shy about “shaking her bits” next week if she wants to be taken seriously.
William – Good start for limited practice time. Needs to do the opposite of Katherine and turn on the “gentleman” next week. If he does, it might cut back on some of the “sexy hunk” references which were too numerous (and did embarrass him).
Gladys – Pure joy. Has moves women half her age would die for. Tristan gave a clinic on how to be the perfect partner. He never overdanced her.
Maria – Opening the season is tough. She handled her nerves pretty well, and I expect her to blossom next week. I see potential there for Derek to tap into.
Donald – Great energy with more natural talent than I thought. He could teach Jaleel a thing or two about how to be competitive but have fun at the same time. Enjoy his chemistry with Peta.
Jack – Knows how to perform on stage; great connection with Anna and the audience. A bit worried that Latin is not going to suit him at all.
Roshon – Kid is unquestionably talented and fun-loving. To make my list of contenders he has to dance like a “man” instead of a “boy” and show me the technique and character of each dance without the hip-hop overlay.
Sherri – Simple, but there were some nice moments. If they stick until mid-season, I hope that gives Val time to figure out the “pro partner” thing.
Melissa – Opening night jitters seemed to really get her, which is not what I expected from a seasoned performer. Hope she relaxes next week.
Gavin – Wasn’t as bad as I feared. Tentative and awkward in spots, but overall pleasant to watch. I liked the inate gentleness in his dancing, but I don’t feel it will buy him a lot of time on the show.
Martina – She looked beautiful, and I love her and Tony; but nerves held her back. In a cast full of trained performers and natural showmen, Martina’s lack of performance skills is likely to be her downfall.
This is why I like this site so much. Different opinions and nobody attacking each other. I was thinking of how Derek could calm down Maria and does anyone remember how he calmed down Jenny Garth in his first season? That might work on Maria too (minus the richard simons thing).
Also, I have a feeling that Gladys is going to rock the quickstep next week but does anyone else feel like Sherri is going to crash and burn with the jive? Her energy might help her but I just don’t seee her doing well aat it unless its a seriously slowly paced jive or Val caters to her strenghts like derek ddi for ricki last season (still think that was more of a a cha cha tha na jive to be honest)
Oh, also have to say I thought Brooke really improved over her past interviews with the contestants. The obvious exception to that statement is her attempt at humor about Tristan’s accent–*cue uncomfortable silence.*
@Elizabeth: I think that Maks will never stop doing that lol. I think Mel B was theo ne to start that in her season and Tom seems to be ok with it so it’s going to stick around.
@Cidra: I don’t think it was nerves. I chalked that up to Tony making the dance too safe. That might be her downfall and it wouldn’t even eb her fault. Tony has to be more risky with her jive. Maybe he could have them dres up in tennis uniforms to make her more comfortable and then ask her what she is comfortable doing. Odds are she will be up for anything (even those cool intricate arm movements that end in a split or some cool pose at the end of the dance)
Lastly, did anyone else notice all the past celebs contestants in the audience? I’d bet money that we will see Jaleel and Joey Fatone will be in the same rehersal room next week. Joey was the king of the jive and Jaleel could learn to let loose in the jive from him. Plus based on past seasons, I feel like we are going to see Jaleel really break away from the pack next week. My worry for Jaleel is if he can handle tango and paso.
Well, here’s an opinion I’ll probably get skewered for, but….
Sherri’s costume??? BLECH!
Yes, she’s a “full-figured girl”. And since I’m a “full-figured gal”, I figure I can throw this rock – it was waaaaay too tight, and extremely unflattering. Accentuated the parts that didn’t need accentuating, if ya know what I mean. Apparently, she upset the ladies in the costume dept…
Cidra, I re-watched the show this morning, and you’re correct, Tristan slowed himself down and didn’t over dance her. I loved his face, at times it seemed to be like, “Look at this hot momma go.” hehehe
Also, during George’s interviews with the couples, Gladys did say she thinks quickstep will be a tough one. Maybe they haven’t started it yet, but other couples have started there week 2 dances.
I liked the color of Sherri’s dress, and at least it covered her up and was age appropriate unless those wrecks that Bristol wore.
I am not a fan of the Quickstep, I am exhausted just sitting on the couch and watching it!!
Whew.
I was very disappointed in Melissa. I don’t think this will be Maks year to nab that MBT. First impressions are everything.
@Sally: I didn’t care for her costume but she didn’t look bad either it was jsut ok.
@Vin (#60) – I hope you’re right that it wasn’t nerves that made Martina’s performance rather muted. Tony’s choreo tends to be subdued and he rarely pushes his celebs, which is a problem. I can see Jive being a stronger dance for Martina. She’s fit. So stamina shouldn’t be a problem. It’s a fun dance. So it’ll be more natural to “cut loose” and perform. The stumbling block will be mastering the kicks and flicks and getting comfortable enough with the choreography to not think about it.
@Vin- I spotted Kristi Y looking fab as always! Saw Joey as well-luv him! It is one of the things I love about this show-the alum and those that get voted off throughout the season still return to cheer everyone on.
I know they aren’t alum, but I had an “uh-ha lol” moment when reading the comments this morning. I saw the Pips and knew they belonged to Gladys. At the very least I figured they were her “groupies”, I just didn’t recognize who they were. A little bit before my time!
@Ms. Taz: At one point I just started playing “Where’s Waldo” when they showed the audience lol.
@Cidra: I have a theory about Tony. When he knows the competition is tough he tends to think (or what it seems to be the case) that he has to keep it simple to stand out which kinda works sometimes. Most of the time not so much.
@Elizabeth – What normal straight man goes around pinching the backside of another man. I find it odd and peculiar.
Katherine was a good dancer but I am not sure how well she connected with the viewers. And some viewers are tired of Markie. Could be an early out for her. And I feel bad for Martina, as much as I would love to see her stay at least midpoint, I just don’t see it happening. There are just too many great celebs on this season that can dance, with much bigger personalities and paired with a better pro dancer.
@sheery: I think the dress would have been more flatering if it were in another color.
Thanks to everyone for their fantastic reviews. It was a great first night although the marks seemed rather inflated. The judges seemed a bit star-struck at times, lol.
Jaleel did great as was expected and I was quite happy with Jack and Anna. Gladys was probably the highlight of the night for me as was so classy. I’m really hoping Donald will be around for a few weeks as he’s so entertaining.
I was a bit surprised by some of the costumes. I don’t think Jack’s costumes didn’t do him any favors (It really contrasted with my memory of him from GH, lol) but it did go very well with the dance. But Martina and Melissa’s costumes left me rather perplexed. Martina looked beautiful but the dress didn’t really fit her in terms of style. I would have gone with a more vibrant color. And what on earth was with putting so much clothing on Melissa for a cha cha? Way too much – the leggings were totally distracting. I found it just made the dance look heavier, if that makes sense.
I hope Cheryl doesn’t keep pandering towards Carrie-Ann, she did that all last season with randomly inserting Rob shaking his butt in nearly every dance.
I loved it. Everyone except Melissa exceeded my expectations.
@trenta: That’s cheryl for ya lol Strategic one out of the female pros.
@Sally. I’m certainly not going to skewer you for your opinion, but I actually loved Sherri’s costume. I thought it was very pretty and the color was great.
@Vin: I’m very worried about Sherri’s jive next week. She was my favorite last night, and I voted for her. But I have no idea how she is going to bounce around in the jive. I have a feeling she’s going to come off looking quite silly. Like I said in my original post, who I vote for could very well be changing!
I just talked to my mother, who is a very casual DWTS viewer. She doesn’t watch every season and she doesn’t even watch the entire season when she does tune in. Her favorites last night were Jaleel and Katherine, in that order. Now, who did she vote for? Melissa! I was like, Mom, what? Why? And she said, “Because I just love Melissa Gilbert!”
Which is, I guess, why it is so impossible to figure out who will have the votes.
I actually voted four last night only: jack, katherine, jaleel, and donald. But then again I’m freaking out over my upcoming job interview so there is a lot on my mind. Next week I’ll vote more I think
Brooke was driving me nuts when she said Mark Ballas and his partner Katherine received the highest scores EVER (26) for a first round performance on DWTS. That is just not so. How can anyone forget the first round dance between Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark — a foxtrot that earned them three 9s? One of my favorite DWTS performances EVER.
Vin, I think we will see a lot of crashing on the jive and quickstep both – and I also predict Mark will dance around Katherine like a mad man because that’s his favorite dance. And there will be polka dots and spats. Although I can see Katherine putting the kibosh on polka dots.
I agree Trenta and it really seems that that has become Cheryl’s thing – pandering to Carrie Ann (and Bruno). It works, for sure, but I hate seeing such high scores on a dance that certainly wasn’t better than Melissa’s let alone Maria’s.
@Vin (#69) – I think you’re on to something. Problem with “simple” is that if done well, it can be eye-catching. However, it must be danced with a subtle flair otherwise it looks bland (which is often the knock against Tony’s choreo). I think it would help celebs if the pro put together a basic storyline for the dance as a teaching tool. It would make it easier for the celeb put some “intent” behind the movements which CAI often says is missing. Occasionally in the rehearsal package you’ll see a pro do that, and the result is often quite good.
By the way, good luck on the job interview.
I really enjoyed this week. No drama or major flubs-just dancing. My faves were Katherine, Jaleel and Gladys. Was very worried about how Katherine would go over with the audience and they seemed to have liked her. I think she is going to surprise everyone next week with a great jive. Mark has already said the music calls for a straight jive, so I think they will do great. Really looking forward to Jaleel as well.
Biggest disappointment was Melissa. From the early promo video with Maks, I was expecting her to dance better. I really like her, so I hope she does better next week.
I loved Jack Wagner as Frisco, but didn’t particularly enjoy his routine last night for some reason. Sherri drove me nuts with the screaming, even though her energy was nice. Gavin, Martina, Maria and Donald were kind of a nonevent for me.
Overall a good night!
@Princess Heidi: Hopefully no spats lol
@Cidra: Thanks
@Vin+@Cidra: Great point Cidra re: story lines. I’ve often thought this works particularly well with the actors/actresses. Give them the overall concept of the dance and then provide a character to portray. Have either of you noticed that some actors in interviews are really awkward when expressing themselves? There is no character or script to follow.
The Atheletes: This group tends to do better when the Pro’s are really specific in the description of movements. For example: Quick, Quick, Slow. They are kinesthetic learners and it is something they can relate to. Or the Pro incorporates a movement from their sport into the routine. Anna did a good job of that with Sugar Ray.
The Singers/Music Artists: Tend to be the auditory learners for obvious reasons. They get counting, building the movements of the dance with the crescendos and nuances of the music. Understanding and appreciating the pauses in between the movements.
The TV Hosts/Commentators: I have always thought they learn better when the Pro’s break the dance down into sequences and then leading them in linking one sequence to the other. Not unlike how you would put a segment of a show together.
Of course none of this would apply if they had diddly squat in the dance ability dept!
@Renee I started yelling at my TV when Brooke said that. I would make a better host, and I have very little hosting skills. I just have a long term DWTTS memory(not as good as courtney though). I also didn’t like it when she said Katherine was the only pereson to ever get 9′s on week one. Forgetting Nicole, and I’m sure there were a couple others, I just can’t think of them off the top of my head.(my good memory is only so good) I also wasn’t very happy about the whole thing with Tristan, and translating. I found it rude and unnecesarry. i could understand him pretty well last season and I could understand his comments in the skybox.
Alrighty, maybe I’m biased because i picked favourites the day the cast announcement came out but….
Jaleel and Kym did AWESOME
i think we have ourselves a winner
Roshon and Chelsie did better than i expected. Can’t wait to see what they’ll cook up in the following weeks. I hated Chelsie’s dress she looked like an ostrich.
I kinda forgot about Martina and Tony’s dance. What did she do again anyways?
Judging by this week’s performances, i think Martina and Tony will go home. Unless they, like, ROCK net week (and i’m 90% sure she won’t…)
Uh oh. Ratings down 34% from last spring. Why go against the Voice? TPTB can’t be surprised. More people watched DWTS, but they’re the wrong people (45).
Glad I was not alone in thinking the judges gave the foxtrot folks higher scores because they have jive next week. Well, that padding better come with the quickstep too!
great opening night! one of the best! great cast! Derek was right: The standards are high this season! Now my opinions:
#Jaleel – Court was right from the start..it is his MBT to lose this season. great dance, a little overscored…3 eights would have been perfect
#William – i agree, he is hot..but i expected him to dance more and better….Cheryl definitely overdanced him…also overscored… 7 7 8 it would have been more appropriate
#Gladys – was fantastic..she blew me away
#Jack – he was charming…but i found him a little clunsy somehow… two 7 and one 8 would have been better
#Roshon – i found his cha cha looking more like a freestyle…didn’t like the feeling…maybe Chelsie took the risk to show his abilities off… overscored again
#Sherrie – i am sorry..but this is not who’s happier contest..i was expecting a foxtrot full of elegance, fluidity and smoothness .. i got …. screaming, jumping Sherrie..for me..the biggest overscoring of the night..three 7 would have done it
#Donald – i loved him. he was great and he was underscored…actually he was perfectly scored for a normal fisrt night..that was not a normal first night as far as the scoring goes
#Maria – she was good, considering she opened the show..that is never an easy thing to do…the was a little too nervous and stiff, but she has potential..underscored again…
#Gavin was sweet but no dance quality..
#Martina – surprised me in a good way..but i still don;t think she has what it takes to dance..
#Melissa – i don’t know why i expected more from her… a little disappointed..
and i have left Katherine last..because ..well she is wonderful, she is sweet, the judges said she almost looked like a pro..because she almost is…I don’t know why no on is screaming ringer?? because she is not dancing with Derek ?? i normally don’t do this..but ..i think the people on twitter already seen this..and i wanted you to see it too..our vocalist is an amzing tap dancer…with previous ballet training…she will have absolutely no problem with the jive…apparently
So, turns out that Katherine is quite the little ringer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXpc3IHXFqs&feature=youtu.be
So where are the screams of outrage?? Oh…right. Wrong pro.
Well, we’ll see how the judges score her going forward. If they aren’t hard on her, we’ll know she was cast to do well here in the colonies. If the show isn’t upfront about her experience, it’ll be a shame.
Well, when Nicole was on, EVERYONE, including Len and Brooke, were harping on her experience. Katherine, from what I can see is just as experienced but in an area much closer to Ballroom. Yet not. a. peep. STILL people are tweeting and writing about Derek always getting the good partners when Mark and Maks have had more ringers than he has – and both have ringers (experience and fanbase) this season. So the injustice of that is galling. I may have to do a big fat post about it to get it off my chest.
please do that Heidi….as i feel i am the only one screaming ringer on here…i don’t mind the ringers….but, for god sakes, acknowledge it…don’t make a rehearsal tape where she learns to dance…when she has done that in 2008…it just seems unfair… i still try to compare the Pussycat Dolls boob pumping choreo with that amazing dance routine i saw
Can I just say I am loving the discussions here? This is such a great group!
I was just about to post re: Jay’s comment. I was going to say that if TPTB addressed Katherine’s experience, then they would be obligated to do it for all and that might be a can of worms they want to keep firmly sealed.
Then I received your post Heidi. I didn’t realize that other forms of dance can be related/close to ballroom. I thought it was an art form all on it’s own. So, just from that stand point I would love to read the post if you decide to do it. If not, then a quick summary would be greatly appreciated. Just goes to show everyone can learn something regardless of how many seasons you have watched!
Whoops….. OK, that ticks me off. I heard an interview Katherine did where she brushed something off (I think it was this show), along the lines of oh, it was nothing, actually… At least for me, it’s the same for her as for Sherri – whatever experience you’ve got, step up an own it. Don’t try to minimize it…. it’s not a case of whether the “show isn’t upfront about her experience”, it’s that they already haven’t been upfront about her experience. And Katherine really hasn’t, either…. Post #92 sums it up – a ringer is a ringer. It shouldn’t matter who the pro is.
Elara, so she suprsied u whith her, I guess dancing, but u still don’t think she what it takes to dance? Not to be rude but she IS dancing and doing a darn good job as are Maria, Melissa, Donald etc All the couples. If Martina ” or anybody ” continues to work hard she can do it. Theres nothing standing in ehr way, anyway. Katherine does have a bit of ringer staus but when you combine that with fanbase she’s no more of one than Mel B, Nicole, or Jennifer, or Donny. I like ringers, they bring good dancing.
I never heard of Katherine before it was announced she would be on the show I didn’t even relies she had sung on DWTS last season. I am glad I did not vote for her, voted for Donald Driver. I don’t like ringers no matter who they dance with.
OK……Yes, Heidi, I think you should do a blog and ten some. I was ticked about Sherri and Roshon but that kind of tap dancing takes a lot of training. Didn’t she say she didn’t dance ?? Pooooor little thing, guess she meant she didn’t dance…recently, yeah, that’s it.
And where is Maks screaming at the top of his lungs on a hugely watched morning news show , bitching about a fellow pro, by name, having partners with dance experience….but then maybe he can’t because didn’t Melissa have ballet training and a father who was also a dancer ??
Well now i know how she got those 9s -_- So not voting for her next week.
Dance experience ringers most often do make for some nice dancing, but always best to admit it up front. I enjoyed Rashon’s “I’ve been dancing all my life” in his package. Viewers don’t like to feel duped.
Sorry…meant to say” a blog and then some”…
And by the way Heidi, you probably know this already but people are accusing Derek of having a ringer THIS season and some of the posts on the show site are about how he never gets anyone fat, or injured. @#*^% I think they just spew this automatically now just in case he wins so they can say “I told you so, told you he always gets the ringers”.
OK…first of all, this was definetely the best first night of all the seasons! This is going to be a really tough one. Really hard to choose.
I’ll just say that I agree only with 2-3 dances’ scores! Don’t know if the judges were just too happy because it was a premiere or because there was no elimination this week. Next week, when they’ll start scoring the way it is (hopefully), people (and not only) won’t like it…We’ve seen it happening before, we’ll see it again!
The judges…I really don’t know what was happening with them! TOO MANY dances overscored and by that I don’t mean only the top scored dances! But that’s what happen when you score a low scored dance high. Anyway…I won’t try to re-score them
Courtney, I have to tell you…amazing post!
Now, what’s my opinion…in no particular order:
–> Jaleel and Kym: I really loved them. For me the best of the night and I can’t wait to see how he is gonna do in Jive. I think he will be great!
–> Maria and Derek: I could see clearly how nervous she was! Nervous smile on her face during the whole routine. She did great though and I am sure she could do much better if she wasn’t so much nervous. But getting out to performe first, especially in the premiere, is not easy!
–> William and Cheryl: He was really good but I would like to see him dancing more. He has it, but he needs work. Don’t know how good he will be in Ballroom. Totally didn’t expect the audience’s reaction. That was a surprise! Maybe he has bigger fanbase than people think. Personally, I know him for almost 4 years! He is humble and he has humor…like that!
–> Gladys and Tristan: She really surprised me!!! I didn’t expect her to be so good for her age! I have to say that watching her, put a huge smile on my face! So happy for her.
–> Sherri and Val: She was good but all these facial expressions really turned me off. OK…you are happy that you are in the competition but that was too much for me and I think for lots of people.
–> Katherine and Mark: She was really good too. Even though her technique was OK, I think she was ‘cold’. Don’t know is she is always like this or it was only because she was nervous. Few hours ago I was thinking that she would be a more ‘ballroom’ dancer and she would have trouble in latin dances. And I was looking forward to see what she was going to do in Jive. But I’ve watched a video of her tap-dancing (thanks Elara for the video) and now I am sure that she will be great in Jive too. And I am really wondering…why all these days noone said that she is a ringer!? I am not saying that I don’t like having someone on the show with dance experience (they make it more ‘beautiful’), but when that someone is paired with a SPECIFIC pro, everyone start shouting out that he got the ringer AGAIN! But when that someone is paired with ANYONE else that never happens!! And I am just wondering why is this happening!?
–> Melissa and Maks: I have to say that I was really disappointent. I was expecting much more from her. Don’t know but she looked awkward…especially her hands.
–> Donald and Peta: I really liked his energy, but I think he has to calm down a little bit. When he does, he is going to do great.
–> Roshon and Chelsie: Roshon really surprised me! I didn’t expected that. I know that there were lot’s of MJ and hip-hop moves in his routine that are ‘closer’ to him, but he can really move! It was good for a Cha cha but I don’t think that this is going to help him in the future dances, especially ballroom. And if he wants to have Len by his side, he has to ‘lose’ these moves and leave them outside the ballroom floor. But he really has the potential. Can’t wait to see him in QS!
–> Jack and Anna: I am still not sure if I liked him or not. He was not bad, but I don’t know. He really looks great and funny, but I want to see him more.
–> Last, I left Martina & Tony and Gavin & Karina…These two couples didn’t do anything for me. Don’t know, but they were the two weakest links, based on dancing imo. And I think they are the two who are in danger, for now. Don’t know what will happen next week!
P.S. Sorry for the long post
Zach – about Martina…don’t get me wrong, i love the woman…she is an inspiration ..but, i don’t think she has the natural ability to dance…that is all…
Fact off Maria’s twitter: Kim K. is voting for her (and Derek). Hmmm. Guess I can’t look a Maria voter “in the mouth.” (as in gift horse!) Never thought I’d be appreciative of KK. Hope she’s voting for her every week.
I didn’t vote for Katherine because I saw on abc forum previously that it was mentioned about her taking foxtrot and I think ballet at age 14, now we see she can tap dance. OMG!! IMAGE THE OUTRAGE IF SHE WAS PAIRED WITH DEREK!!!!
I have to say this: I honestly feel that MARK has gotten paired with more “ringers”. (Kristi, Shaun (yes, I knew she’d win–extremely popular and was on after a big win),Sabrina, Chelsea Kane, and now Katherine.) I feel a ringer is someone who can dance/had dance experience and either has a huge fan base or has the personality to charm people to join their fan base. As soon as many saw KJ tear up as she listened to the judges people were saying how beautiful, elegant, and classy she was and that they’d vote for her.
I had noticed that Kris Jenner had said she was rooting for Maria, as did either Kourtney or Khloe (is there a difference anymore?) I thought it was odd they wouldn’t vote for Cheryl. If they did tweet support for her I’m sorry if I missed it.
Ms. Taz, I linked the tap video, which looks pretty close to jive type foot movements (which would also explain why Derek picked it up extremely fast), but I was thinking more about her one video where it appears she’s doing a pretty good Paso.
I figured Katherine could paso based on previous clips shown and heard about tap but with that? Yeah, the jive will be fine but she will surprise everyone, eye roll. If she was with .derek, people would be screaming ringer and unfair. Yet Mark got two wins with obvious winners, had tons off partners with potential. Judges will overscore to keep her around. But Mark, all because you are that good? Right? Eye roll. At least Derek admits how lucky he has been but he downplays how he took a novice like Brooke to win. Mark is a horrible combination of insecure and full of himself.
Maks might not know about Katherine yet. Or maybe he was told to quit throwing fellow pros under the bus. But then Mark has thrown Derek under the bus as well, commenting about Nicole being a dancer after he’s had a few ringers now. There’s enough hypocrisy to go around.
Where’s TMZ when you need them????
More than technique, that video showed Katherine can pull off the vibe and attitude, it is not just about being elegant for her. Yet the judges will continue the tongue baths. Does Mark always need this much help to win a trophy? I could tolerate this more if Katherine had a different partner but Mark gets another gift of a partner with no outrage? Maybe because he is not that draw like Derek who garners a lot of attention.
Maybe tmz is lurking here and will show it, lol
**Cue the Jaws music because a blood bath is about to ensue**!
@Sally-I agree w/the “lying by omission” or “down playing it”. I still feel that the show has to take some of the blame too though. That info should come out when doing their due dilligence/research for recruiting the contestants.
@Sheery-Providing it is true that the ‘K’ family didn’t vote for Cheryl, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. You get ‘K’ family support while it is beneficial FOR THEM. Voting for Maria keeps the PR/Entertainment channels clear, as in “We voted for you, now in return do this story…”
Guess CAI really knew what she was talking about when she said “professional” !!!
And doesn’t Markie always look so innocent.
Oh, I don’t think Katherine is a lock for the win any more than I think Jaleel is. I don’t actually think there is a clear winner. I also agree with whoever called Katherine “cold” – that’s what I was thinking last night as well. I think it’s the curse of the very blonde hair, blue eyes and a bit of British reserve that makes her seem cold. It’s an expression too, I think “cold beauty”.
#Melissa…maybe it’s the “Shirley” connection. I’ve heard she can be a b-o-w when she wants certain things for Marky.
Mark’s hypocrisy is annoying and entertaining. His jealousy is funny. I will say I love that both Kym and Derek never seem so win focused. Of the multiple winners, they are so low key and underplay how they continually succeed. I feel like Derek is having fun and not as focused on wins. I mean he is the first to three wins, only male with back to back wins , more Emmy noms and only two of his partners have did not make the final four. Also without an athlete or olympian.
Katherine: Said the judges: “it was like watching two pros dance” . Well, DUH is all I can say after watching the video of her tap dancing her brains out; she is a very talented dancer. I agree with Heidi that there’s no “ringer” outrage because she is not paired with you know who. Still, I don’t mind ringers because they dance so well, but I wish their experience wasn’t kept a secret.I’m expecting great things from her now, although if Markie wears those d**n spats again, I may throw something at the TV.
Jaleel – Agree its his to lose. He has a lot of potential.
William – Cheryl overdanced him but he sure is sexy.
Jack – Eye candy for the older ladies, but a little stiff. Anna’s yellow shoes were distracting.
Roshon – Loved his energy and fast feet but more like a freestyle than a cha cha.
Maria -Love her & Derek as a team but hopefully he can get her to loosen up more. She has potential & of course I can’t get enough of watching him dance.
Gladys- musical rhythm and showmanship & I liked how Tristan didn’t overdance her. Classy, both of them.
Sherrie -I’m sorry, I couldn’t get past her costume, it didn’t flatter her figure.
Donald – Boy does he have fast feet. Charisma as well.
Gavin – boring for me & not much else to say.
Martina – she looked so out of her element it made me uncomfortable.
Melissa – awkward, a little frenetic, not too impressed, and expected better.
Brookbot: I was appalled at how she “translated” for Tristan. What is the matter with her, anyway? Anyone off the street would be a better host than she is.
Tom: Awesome as usual
All in all, a fabulous first night with lots of talented stars and I am so psyched for this season!
I agree Katherine is not a lock but I see flashbacks to Chelsea and propping her. She did come off cold, robotic and not as natural as Chelsea. Those tears were also a turn off.
I predict one Emmy baiting routine from Mark. No way he will pass this up when he has a ringer.
Too bad with those tap skills, she is not paired with Derek.
As for the Kardashians, they are friends with Maria. Seems like Maria has a lot of friends. I even saw Wilmer from that 70s show to Paul Pierce tweet support for her. She does seem like the type who is friends with everyone.
I see Kym and Derek as very similar in terms of personality (how it relates to the show and lack of serious competitiveness) and how they focus on their partners.
I’ve seen a ton of commentary about Brooke and what she said to Tristan. This is what sucks about being out of town. I can’t rewind.
Anyone else remember what happened last time Carrie Ann called one of the celebs close to “pro”?? Len ripped that woman (an actual NON-ringer) to shreds for NOT dancing like a pro. Somehow, I don’t see that happening this time.
Yeah, that was to Brooke.
I found the judges so over the top with Katherine, like she was Brooke or Gilles, genuine surprise. Given her background, she should be better than others by a mile.
Doubt Len will rip into Katherine. The script for her seems to be ” what a surprise, where did she come from”.
Well, Melissa, you know that Derek and Allison Holker are working on something big together too. If Derek puts that on DWTS (and I don’t think we can be sure he will), combined with his dance with Allison from last season, I think that SHOULD take the DWTS Emmy slot. Of course, it all depends on if eternal favorite Mia Michels choreographs for SYTYCD again. Yuk. I’d rather Mark get a nom than her again.
Anybody remember Mia Michaels infamous Dead Daddy Dance? I do, that had I want an emmy written all over it.
Kim Kardashian star of Kardashian reality shows. Kardashian shows produced by Ryan Seacrest. Ryan Seacrest dating Julianne Hough. Jullianne Hough sister of Derek Hough. Derek Hough is partners with Maria Menunous. Kardashians vote for Maria Menounos.
Six degrees of Hollywood.
Can you imagine a final with “alleged ” cheat Sherrie and “alleged ” ringer Katherine from across the pond? That would suck. I’ve said this before but I really like to see stars progress in this competition. If I wanted to see just great dancing I would go to the ballet. I like the journy of the dancers.
With that video I can see how she would clearly nail dances like the Quickstep but that doesn’t come close to any latin dances nor other ballroom ones like the waltz or tango for example, just my opinion.
But this video was just recently found so give it some time and I’m sure more people will scream ringer in no time. Of course, if she were dancing with Derek, I think this video would have surfaced earlier and people would have screamed ringer from the start anyway even before seeing proof but don’t worry, people will do after that.
I do agree that Mark has gotten more ringers than Derek though, and obviously nobody criticizes him for it, but that just the way people react now, we’re used to everybody screaming ringer at Derek because he’s just so good everybody’s bitter their fav pro can’t win so they find a reason to hate on Derek. I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t think it’s fair to hate on Katherine just because nobody screams ringer “yet” just because she’s with Mark.
And she did say in an interview last week that she did take tap dancing lessons as a child and did a show (Viva la diva) with a ballerina who taught her some ballet stuff while she taught her some singing so she’s not really denying anything.
Thats just my opinion but I certainly understand where you come from and I agree with most of what you are all saying.
My review of Dancing with the Stars season 14 Premiere:
1. Maria and Derek – Cha-Cha-Cha – Good body and athletic. Yes she was stiff and nervous – Mainly because it’s the first show and I would be so scared to go first. But she rocked it and was really good. In my opinion she was underscored with the judges. Should have gotten atleast one or two 8′s. But every single season the couple opening the show ALWAYS get underscored. But I think ballroom will be her forte. Get ready to quickstep! – Score: 21
2. Jack and Anna – Foxtrot – It was OK! But not the best. Way overscored from the judges. You really give him two 8s?? Come on you gave Maria all 7s? This wasn’t even a foxtrot. More like Broadway and Theater in my opinion. I’m very shocked about Len Goodman giving them the 7 mainly because he hate theater and all that mess. Should have gotten like a 19 or 20. But not worthy of 8′s right now. Score: 23
3. Donald & Peta – Cha-Cha-Cha – I loved it! Very glad to see Peta Murgatroyd dance with someone who can actually dance a little bit. I really don’t see her going home first. But yes it was wacky and out of control but it was great fun. But need to straighting up for ballroom next week but great fun and entertainment. Score: 21. Well deserved.
4. Gavin and Karina – Foxtrot – Love his singing but not that great on the dancefloor. No fluidity in his arms. Posture was hit and missed. No chemistry between him and Karina. But it’s the first week so hopefully Gavin can improve with his Jive next week. Kinda overscored in my opinion but I don’t have a paddle. Score: 20
5. Roshon and Chelsie – Cha-Cha-Cha – Looks like we have another Kyle Massey this season. But it was overscored. Not really a cha-cha-cha more like a freestyle dance and not the cha-cha. I was VERY surprised with Len since he hates hip-hop and everything. But I really don’t think he can handle the quickstep but he may shock us. But I think he deserved about a 20 or 21 with that dance. It was fun but not a cha cha. Score: 23
6. Sherri and Val – Foxtrot – LOVE HER! I would have never thought that Sherri Shepherd could do smooth and elegant. Good posture and connection with Val. Yes she slipped up a little bit but its the first week! Score well deserved! Score: 23
7. Melissa and Maksim – Cha-Cha-Cha – Very disappointing!!!!! I love her in little house and everything. But dancing is not her thing. Hit and missed and slipped up at the beginning the judges was wayy to nice! But hopefully she can do ballroom. Score deserved about a 19. Score: 20
8. William and Cheryl – Cha-Cha-Cha – Good cha-cha-cha. But again overscored. Cheryl was doing most of the dancing. Yes William can do sexy and he needs to do some dancing too. Bruno and Carrie Ann was too nice. In my opinion they gave him 8s based on his looks and not on the dancing. Deserved about a 21. Score: 24
9. Martina and Tony – Foxtrot – She was very beautiful and elegant tonight! But the dancing was not that good. She was stiff, lacked footwork and posture. But it’s new and I think she is the underdog this season. Hopefully she’ll do better next week. Deserved 18 pts. Score: 20
10. Katherine and Mark – Foxtrot – BEST DANCE OF THE NIGHT HANDS DOWN! Wow! Did not expect that! Nice posture and connection with Mark. Nice arm placement! I mean wow! Deserved a 27. Reminded me a glimpse of Kristi Yamaguchi and Nicole Scherzinger! Kristi’s elegance and Nicole’s pop! But Brooke needs to study! First Show – Kristi and Mark – 27, Sabrina and Mark – 26, Helio and Julianne – 25, and Nicole and Derek – 25. All got nines the first week. But anyways great job – Score: 26
11. Gladys and Tristan – Cha-Cha-Cha – WOW! Shocked! haha Loved THEM so much!!! Nice performance and everything!!!! GOO GLADYS KNIGHT!! – Score: 23
12. Jaleel and Kym – Foxtrot – GREAT dance but did not compare to Katherine and Mark. I loved it and everything but didn’t have the wow factor as Katherine did. Deserved about a 24 or 25. Score: 26
Overall GREAT start to the season for everyone!!!!! I can tell it’s going to be some shocking eliminations this season!
People who need to step it up next week.
Melissa and Maksim
Marina and Tony
Gavin and Karina
Needs to do better next week or heading to the door.
We disagree there lol. Mia at least moved me with her dances while Mark’s always seem like a cheap knock off other choreographers. I am tired of her wins but like Wade kept winning for awhile, beating Mia too, they were deserved. Imagine Mark’s insecurity ego combo if he got another nom.
I agree with what you said about Kym and Derek. They are both creative without constanty telling the audience they are creative.
Was Derek and Allison for a dance or just a side project for them? Their dance in the fall alone should garner a nom though I would, love to see more from them. His psycho tango too. Inventive, creative.
As for the Kardashian, it looks like Maria has a lot of famous friends. Not surprising. She seems like the type friends with everyone.
I very much doubt Kim and all the Kardashians are actually Ryan Seacrest puppets if that’s what you’re saying.
The project is super secret so far, but I do know Derek was doing the music for it. It’s a mystery.
ETA: forgot to add that I think Mia has been over rated for about 2 years now and totally buys her own press.
I am a huge Tristan lover and one of the things I love most about him is his accent. But sometimes I can’t understand him, I think Brooke knew that the clock was ticking and she wanted to make sure the viewers heard and understood what Tristan said. I was glad that she did it, otherwise I would have missed it. So in my opinion Brooke did the right thing.
I don’t know, I don’t think tap dancing screams “ringer”, but that’s just my opinion. Wasn’t Ricki also pretty good at tap, to the point that people were hoping she would do it on the show? Any tap skills she might have had certainly didn’t help her in the jive.
Now if there really is a video of Katherine doing a paso (I think that is what the post above said), that would be a whole different ballgame.
I do have to say though, that I agree that Mark has gotten more ringers than Derek. Even on seasons he didn’t win, he got better partners, such as Sabrina, who had experience. And Kim Kardashian, who, while she sucked, probably before the season would have been considered to be a great partner.
Violet, Katherine has admitted that I think it was as a young teen she had professional FoxTrot instruction and that she had taken ballet also, so that’s in addition to tap.
I also think that TPTB thought Kim K would be able to “move” since she’s always shaking her thang in clubs lol.
Most dwts viewers like certain pros, but do vote based on the celeb they connect with. I’m hearing a lot of how they like Melissa, but can’t stand Maks so they’ll vote for someone else or not all…?
Forgot to mention, I think it was Zach who brought up fan bases, don’t underestimate the fan base of KJ or should I say “proud fellow countrymen” (and women)
She was trending on twitter and she said that she’s receiving tons of positive support from the UK and new fans here in America. Someone said Shirley Ballas has been getting out an talking up Katherine (I personally haven’t seen anything), but the last times I saw Shirley “out and about” and “looking for ” TMZ/Harvey (lol) was with Bristol & when he “dated” Pia….to me that’s because both had LOTS of media attention.
First off, I really enjoyed Monday night performances. Overall a fun charismatic cast. It will be difficult seeing any of them leave. Gladys just made me smile. She was having the time of her life it seemed.
i am rooting for Maria & Derek.. She’s starting from scratch and I think she has a lot of potential. Plus they look so darn gorgeous together.
Looking forward to an amazing season.
Re: Katherine Jenkins, I don’t have a problem with someone having some type of dance background as sometimes it really makes for some amazing performances. However, my problem with this is like many of you have already said, she is not owning up to having any type of dance experience, after her teenage years. From the look of some of her youtube performances, her dance experience is quite extensive.
I feel like they are not saying anything about her dance experience because the producers are trying to make her a star in the US!I This could have a negative effect. Kinda like fooling the viewing audience of DWTS. If she was partnered with Derek this would be a never ending “ringer” conversation. I think she should just fess up like Roshon did so we can move on from this. I like her but the producers and her hiding her dancing experience comes off as sneaky IMO! No wonder Mark is so quiet this season-LOL
A lot of people we’re overscored on monday. Like.
William and Cheryl – First Cheryl was doing most of the dancing and not William. Yes he can do sexy but he should do equal amount of dancing and just not his partner. I can already seeing right now Carrie Ann and Bruno overscoring him mainly on the way he looks. He should have gotten like a 21 or 22 not a 24.
Roshon and Chelsie – It was fun. But too much messing around and not enough cha-cha-cha. I was really surprised when len said “7″ because he hates that kind of dancing. Should of been a 21 not a 23.
Martina and Tony – I believe she is the dark horse this season. She looked good but no footwork, no fluidity in the arms, no posture, and no connection with Tony. Should have been an 18.
Melissa and Maks – I was very upset on this performance. She was one of my favorites to watch this season but i wouldn’t be surprised if she is in the bottom next week. should have been an 18.
Jack and Anna – Not a foxtrot. Too much theater and broadway in this routine. And why did Carrie Ann and Bruno give this an 8??? And they only gave Maria Menounos 7?? Come on now! Should have been an 19 or 20.
People who got underscored:
Maria and Derek – Every single season the person first out of the gate is underscored. Maria and Derek deserved atleast a 22 or 23 on that dance. Yes she was nervous but it’s the first dance and she’s the first out. But throwing out 8s to everyone who did not meet up to standard is ridiculous.
Donald and Peta – This dane really reminded me of Gladys and Tristan. High energy and fun and everything. But why did Gladys get 8s and Donald only got 7s???
Thanks, Sheery. Ballet isn’t a big deal to me, as it’s been noted on this site several times that most little girls do have a bit of a ballet background. But the Foxtrot thing is in the realm of the Paso video. Those would be unfair advantages, in my opinion.
Katherine was among my favorites last week. I’m still going to base my votes on who I like the best overall, as I did Monday night with Sherri. I don’t know if that means my votes will go to Katherine or not. I don’t think I’ll let the “ringer” thing play a part in it, even though it does upset me a little bit. We’ll see. Though, I must admit–as much as I love some of the pairs, I’m one of those who would really like to see some new blood, pro wise, win the MBT. That goes into my voting preferences as well. This season, based on what I saw Monday night, I feel I might vote for Sherri/Val, Roshon/Chelsie or Gladys/Tristan much of the time. It isn’t set in stone, though. If Jaleel, Katherine, Maria, Gavin or William had a night that was just amazing in my eyes, I would vote for them no matter who their pro was.
Just linked a friend to William’s dance and noticed that, though lots here didn’t see much chemistry with Cheryl, that he was smiling at her a lot–maybe hard to see with his small head. ; ) And he seemed to be doing a lot of dancing, at least as much as Hines was doing and getting raves for.
I’m wondering why so many are turned off by Sherry? Is she really annoying on the View? From her performance here she seems to me like this season’s Carson–funny, not taking herself seriously, and loving the experience.
Boy, even I missed that one. I don’t recall Brooke complaining about Nicole’s past “experience”. As for Katherine, Hello? Is anyone out there? Hmm, seems to not work. DEREK GOT A RINGER IN MARIA! Let’s see if that works. Does anyone else hear a pack of dogs in the distance? Psh.
Cheers All! I love this site and have to admit I read it a bit obsessively, but haven’t commented much before. Firstly, I thought the whole night was great! – a higher quality than we usually see in the first week for sure, but still universally overscored. I kept thinking – a 23 for Jack! Where do they go from there? I’m wondering if the overscoring was a plan to be able to say – “the best first week EVER” on commercials to combat THE VOICE.
It distracts me. not in a good way.
It seemed like everyone was just so excited and trying so hard. No meta-world-mess just trying to get the boot, no shocking non-star just to get the ratings, just good intentions and good dancing. I am more excited about this season than I have been for a long time.
That said, even though the dancing rocked, I have to admit I was cringing at quite a few of the costumes. Chelsie seemed to be channeling Lacey, and I just didn’t understand what Karina was wearing at all.
and can I say, that though I really love watching Mark’s choreography, I have a hard time watching him dance it. Even though his foxtrot was toned down, (and am I wrong, or was this the same song, same yellow and even same sunflowers he used for the same dance with Chelsea?) I still counted his surprised-and-excited-fish-face expression 9 times.
Lastly, I am not that familiar with Peta’s choreography. I loved Donald’s energy and effort out there but it seemed like part of what needed to be toned down was the just the routine. Peta was throwing herself around just as much as Donald was. It seemed like he was doing what she wanted him to do, which makes me nervous for their future routines. I know she did’t have anything to work with last year, but I do remember Len commenting that her routine was just the same old non-cha-cha-cha, more shaking and grinding. Do you, oh wise and lovely ladies of puredwtsland know of her history with the quickstep?
Thanks for what you do here. I eagerly await the Cheesecake Awards, and plan to actually make a cheesecake just for the occasion. Wish I could send you a piece. Well, virtual cheesecake to you all!
@Beka: I’ll take you up on a slice or two of cheese cake!
I’ll provide an open bar…..
Holla Who Wants A Par-Tay?!!
Beka, if no one else wants to participate at least we’ll be having a good time LOL!!!!!
@Beka – I’m not wise, or lovely, but I count myself as being an inhabitant of puredwtsland…
Peta is a new pro. This is only her second season, and last time around, she was booted off first. So, I think she’s pretty much an unknown quantity where choreography is concerned.
I know it’s probably way too early to tell but based on this week I’m assuming the pros or contestants can’t say what songs they have b4 mondays now? Personally, I kinda liked knowing what the song was beforehand but i guess it adds to the anticipation lol
@vin
I remember Pam Anderson doing a Larry King Interview while she was on DWTS. When Larry asked her what she was dancing, she kept looking behind her shoulders (Off camera) and she kept asking someone “Am I allowed to say what I’m doing? Like the song and all…Oh, okay” And then she turned to Larry and said “I’m not allowed to give details” and then she turned AGAIN to off camera guy and asked if she could spill the theme. Once she was given permission she revealed a movie theme but could not say which movie she was channeling.
The point being I don’t think they’re allowed to reveal songs, at least that’s what I assume.
@vin – Louis and Elena did a chat show on the web (Vogue linked to it in an earlier post). Louis said that during the competition, the pros get their music 8 days before they have to perform. That means when they get the music, they don’t really know if they’re going to get to actually perform it, since they might get booted off. But it was done like that to give the pro some time to think about choreography. I think that they get their first song pretty early on when the practices start, but Jaleel did mention was that in his initial practice with Kym, there was no music.
sheery, lots of people, including Maria, were trending on twitter the other night. Not a good barometer of anything.
The foxtrot did look like a toned down version of the one he did Chelsea.
I do not mind ringers. My issue is keeping it hidden and lying about it. Taking in those compliments as though you never learned the foxtrot before. Also Mark’s hypocrisy. Derek might have had Nicole and Jennifer, but he has Kristi, Sabrina, and Shawn. Stop being bitter and jealous because Derek’s record is better. Derek defended Mark when he got Kristi but then Mark throw Derek under the bus when he got Nicole? Now he has Katherine and is mum? That is what is annoying,
Derek has nothing to prove on the show anymore, but if he had Katherine, the ringer talk would be so loud! Probably because some see Mark’s choreography as a liability at times while Derek has proven what he can do. But also the Uk media would go nuts. I imagine they would have spun it in a way to getnCheryl Cole in the mix, lol.
From what I have seen of Derek, he is very much like Switzerland-neutral. I know people would probably like him to call Mark and Katherine out on this due to their past history, but I just can’t see him doing it. If he did, yes he would be justified in doing so, but it would also reflect badly on him.
Like Melissa said, Derek has nothing to prove anymore. An example would be what happened between he and Maks last season. The names of past winners speaks for itself. Derek didn’t have to say a word, all he had to do was point at the plaque and his point was made.
It is upsetting and frustrating when ringer info is “hidden”, omitted completely, or lied about but having an alleged or proven ringer as a partner is not the be all and end all of winning the MBT.
As far as the other Pros calling each other out on it, maybe they need to take a step back and evaluate the formula that it takes for a win. Compare it to what they are doing and tweak it, rather than reaching for an obvious excuse “well they have a ringer that is why they will likely win and I’ll lose”.
Thanks guys
I really hope they continue to do a great mix of song like week one was. We had country, old school Frank Sinatra, Pitt Bull, The Wanted, etc. Makes me think that the show is really listening to the fans in terms of music.
Now if the show would jsut do something about overscoring it would be perfect.
The pros have never told their songs, Vin. You knew before because WE knew before.
@Princess Heidi: You guys always know the inside scoop
That’s why I love this site so much.
On a side note, I was thinking about who could win this season soley based on monday’s perfromances and just from people’s opinions from other sites as well (ew.com) I think that Gladys stands a good chance.
@Ms. Taz – I found a way to combine the two – Boozy Cheesecake! http://www.food.com/recipe/baileys-irish-cream-chocolate-chip-cheesecake-132261. Joy!
Just an idea for its own thang, for the lovely wise ladies of DWTSland, I would love a professional overview of the Pro’s choreographical strong suits and weaknesses, historically speaking.
@Beka: OMG! That looks to die for! We’ll do Martha proud!
Just what I expected Katherine the best of the female celebs and Jaleel the best of the male celebs. I thought Maria was going to better then she was. She got the steps down but she need a little more pizzazz in her dancing. Jaleel is the total package dancing, personality, and fan base. Roshon is probably the best dancer but does he bring the maturity that you need in ball room to succeed?. William was okay, I feel bad for him because Cheryl and abc pimped him out so bad and you can tell he was uncomfortable with it. He probably thinks he can offer a lot more than just sexy. His quickstep next week should be breath of fresh air for him. People that were forgettable to me were Sherri, Melissa, Gavin, Martina, Jack, and Donald. I was surprised that Gladys could move that good for her age. I think Jaleel will definitely be in the finals, getting the pimp spot and 9′s the first week! it’s his to lose. I’m still not sure who’s going to be in the finals with him though.
Can’t wait for the jives
(well all except Katherine and Mark’s jive…..odds are spats will be worn -_-). Tony better not blow it with the jive again. He screwed over Chyna w her last season becuase it was so boring and safe.
@Brit: I think she was nervous (which odds arem sot of them were excpet for Sherri, Donald, Gladys, and Jaleel). I think the audience helkped her gain mometum during the dance though and made ehr let loose.
Yea, Vin. Tony is comletely capable of cheorographing great routines, sometimes he is just too safe though, I hope he does a knock-out Jive for Martina.
I hope so Zach, because I would love Martina to do well in this competition, but I have to be honest the partnership of Martina and Tony is kind of boring.
Right now (I know it’s too early), I see a finale between Roshon, Jaleel and Donald (pushed by fans).
But I’d like to see Roshon, Katherine and Maria.
Well, let’s wait for next weeks.
Oh, and THANK YOU VERY MUCH you producers, for the songs. Loved them, specially the non-recycled ones =]
@carlos: ur ideal top three (roshon, katherine, maria) sounds pretty close to the way i think its going to turn out. I think Donald might take Maria’s spot though. Either way it would be a hell of a finale
@vin This season is really unpredictable in a good way… =]
I hope roshon goes well on ballroom as I want katherine well in latin. Have to confess don’t like him very much, but Chels does deserve to be on a finale.
Roshon reminds me of most disney people that ahve been on the show but i think he is a better dancer than chelsea and kyle for sure. I hated Cody Lindley as a dancer (but liked him as a person lol) so he defiantely is better than Cody.
But saying that, the freestyle would probably be hip hop and off the top of my head I can oly think of three hip hop freestyles that were really good (Apollo, Lance, and Emmit)
Kyle wasn’t the best dancer but once he hit that dance floor you knew he had “IT”. I didn’t see that with Roshon.
Roshon is just a little rougher around the edges when he speaks but I think he has the same showman/star quality as Kyle.
Wow – I don’t agree about Roshon. He’s nothing like Kyle for me.
For me, Kyle is waaaay more likeable than Roshon. hehe
I don’t like lance fresstyle. I preffer Kyle’s.
I like Mario Lopez hip hop’d freestyle.

Looks like the Situation really did learn something on DWTS. Kinda impressed
The way he flipped the chick in the blue over his should was very DWTSish.
shoulder* Damn Auto Correct
I’m excited that Chelsie has a partner with dance skills. She seems to be one of the pros with partners with egos/attitude (Romeo, Michael Bolton, and Jake) and limited dance skills.
I have watched Roshon and Chelsie’s cha-cha routine over and over. Love it!!! Roshon amazed me with how he kept up with Chelsie’s fast footwork towards the end. Amazing! Hopefully, he will continue to improve his ballroom dance skills and they can improve week to week. I would love to see them in the finals and imagine them doing a jazz-hip-hop-ballroom infused free-style routine. I will just have to do my part in voting.
Here’s hoping that Chelsie will choreograph some more stellar routines for her and Roshon!!
