Martina Navratilova And Tony Dovolani Hoping For A Rebound On Dancing With The Stars Week Two
AARP has another great interview up with Martina. She dishes all about her and Tony’s first dance. Leading into week two, Martina says her body feels terrific. She and Tony have the Jive this week and so far she’s having no issues with it physically. Below is more, but, be sure to read the link for much more.
AARP: How many hours a day are you practicing?
Martina: Given how physical the dance is, we’re splitting up practice into two sessions a day — one in the morning and one in the evening. Total per day is around three to four hours. So far, I don’t feel like I’m at risk of over-training at all.
AARP: After your opening dance one judge said you needed to extend through the undersides of your arms, not just the tops. Did that make sense to you?
Martina: Yes, that totally made sense. I got tight during the performance and felt a little rushed. In tennis, you keep your arms close and take big steps. It’s the opposite in dancing — you extend through the arms and take smaller steps.
AARP: What adjustments have you and Tony made based on your opening performance?
Martina: I’m working on keeping my upper body as still as possible. I want to move, and move my head. But that’s not what you do with [the jive].
Oh, I am so hoping for a strong rebound with these two Monday night! Please please please…

Stamina certainly won’t be a problem with Martina. I just hope she can relax (odd word to use with the Jive, I agree) into it, enjoy it, have fun while out there.
It seems I’m hearing from the other teams that they’re training 5-6 hours per day, but Martina only 3-4 ? Is that wise, I wonder? I realize she’s very fit, but seems she could use the extra time to get comfortable with the dance. Or is everyone else exaggerating the amount of practice their putting in?
@Vogue: Awesome interview and I too am keeping every body part crossed in hopes that they do well Monday. I should have become a contortionist! LOL
@Linde: During an interview Tony gave to Ledger Pop on March 18th he said they were practicing 4-5 hrs a day. Some couples started practicing their 2nd wk dances before last Monday’s performance. I couldn’t find anything concrete to say T+M did this, but if they did then maybe that could account for the decreased practice time?
#2 Ms. Taz – Yes, in fact Martina tweeted before last week that they had already started on the Jive. Here’s the link to her tweet where she says “started work on the jive”. The tweet is dated March 10th — well before the performance last Monday night:

Vogue, thanks for keeping us up to speed with all of the Martina news. There’s so much of it, that I am not able to take it all in, but I do appreciate your posts and the comments from DWTS fans on this blog. I voted for her, and I hope she sticks around for a while.
YW and thank you!! <3
@NYC Girl:
TYVM hun! You’re right there is a lot of stuff on these two. It seems like there are a lot of people supporting them. I just hope that translates into votes!
Even though Martina didn’t score particularly high with her Foxtrot, I’m still glad she’s drew Foxtrot–Jive instead of Cha-Cha–Quickstep. I think she’d have been even more nervous and out of her comfort zone trying to “shake her bits” in a “frisky, flirty” cha-cha.
Foxtrot was a better fit for her personality. It allowed her to show elegance and ease into this dancing thing. Now she has the Jive which is fast but fun. She’ll be more relaxed and should be able to use her fitness and coordination to good effect.
Hey everybody – I’m interviewing Tony tomorrow! Send me your questions to stuart.brazell@gmail.com or tweet me @stuartbrazell
#5 Ms. Taz – You’re welcome! It’s impossible to catch all of the statements by all the celebs and pros, so it’s great that we have this website to pool our info. The more eyes watching for news, the better!
#6 Cidra – I really did laugh out loud at the googly eyes you added after the thought of Martina doing a “frisky, flirty” Cha-Cha! But she’s Martina, so we know she can find a way to pull it off, however improbable that may be. If she lasts long enough, at some point she will have to Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba … so keep the googly eyes ready!
Stuart, awesome. I just sent you some questions!!
Thanks, Stuart! I can’t wait to see your interview.
Wow!
TYVM Stuart for the opportunity. I hope I’m not too late. I just sent you a couple of questions! Looking forward to the interview!
@Stuart, can’t wait for your interview with Tony.
@NYCGirl, I’ve got my googly eyes ready. Hope I get a chance to use them along with a big
when Martina knocks Samba or Rumba out of the park. Hope she has her kicks and flicks going for the Jive on Monday!!!
