DWTS 14 Week 6 – Motown Week Song Predictions!
So next week is Motown week, and I could not be more pumped! Seriously guys…I love me some Motown, so this was a fun list to compile
Here’s the deal: so far, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, and The Temptations have all been confirmed as acts that are going to be singing live as the couples perform on Monday night. I’m not sure if they’re going to be singing for every couple or not, and I’m not sure if the songs the couples are dancing to are going to only be songs by those particular acts – the deets are a bit murky as of right now. We also don’t know for sure what dance Gladys has yet – our reader Magnolia (@TristanDWTSFans on Twitter…follow her, she’s cool
) has promised to let us know as soon as she finds out. There’s been speculation that it’s jive, so I went ahead and compiled a list of Motown jive songs just for the hell of it
Since TPTB have also expressed an affinity for recycling songs in the past few seasons in particular, I’ve pored through music from previous seasons and pulled out previously used Motown songs that we might see again. I’ve bolded the songs that are my “best guesses” for what we might see on Monday night, based on all the info above. If we get confirmation on any more songs, we will reveal it in Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What?” post on Sunday, and I may update this post with other pertinent info as it comes out.
But for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool sounds of Motown - DWTS style!
ETA: According to Donald’s Twitter, there’s supposedly a “Motown Marathon” dance to be done on Tuesday…take it with a grain of salt as we wait on the press release for next week to confirm. As for a possible song? Not sure what dance this Motown Marathon is going to be, but I imagine that the music will have to be something that can be looped continuously until the marathon ends, and it probably will be instrumental only. So in other words – I have no idea
In the meantime, send me your soul food recipes at courtney@puredwts.com!

So what songs are you guys hoping to hear on Monday night?

Gladys need’s to do her music!
Derek did mention that an artist will b singing when they dance the Foxtrot
Thanks for the plug!
I know Tristan wanted a “fast” dance this week, and I think any of the songs you mentioned would be good for a jive.
Motown is one of my favorite genres of music, so I’m super excited about this coming week, even with the double-elimination. And thank goodness, the band isn’t going to butcher the songs!
“Smokey Robinson”…Sigh.
Uh-hm. Showing my age here. Love/Loved Smokey Robinson, my sister and I would play our 45 records and sing and dance along to alot of Motown classics. Super excited for this night. Okay, I know I am old. Thank you, and Love you All…
Sorry if I missed it in the article but where did the information come from about which dance each couple is doing? I guess I’ll have to look at “On The Red Carpet” again or Access Hollywood to see if Jaleel and Kym in any interviews after elimination night mentioned that they’re doing the Quickstep.
I’d like to predict that the Samba will be a bad dance for Katherine and that she will score no better than a 23.
Since the dance duel has the jive this coming week it does not make sense that Tristan and Gladys would also have the jive to dance to.
You don’t know that for sure, Maureen. We really don’t have a precedent for the dance duel, and we actually didn’t say for sure that Gladys had the jive – I just thought I may as well share some Motown jive songs. Would you like to go ahead & threateningly warn me not to “underestimate” Gladys again this week, while you’re here?
Being realistic, the jive is going to be tough if that’s what they have. It’s a tough dance for anyone, I think, but considering they haven’t had a lot of the “fast” dances, it might be a challenge. I’m actually hoping they don’t have it (and of course, don’t have to do it in the dance duel). We’ll have to see…
Alright, Courtney, what’s your song prediction for this “Motown marathon” that Donald tweeted about? Could be a really fun dance to watch!
https://twitter.com/#!/Donald_Driver80/status/193158976232366081
I just saw Gladys on Entertainment Tonight commenting on Dick Clark’s passing from the DWTS studio. Tristan was with her and they showed a brief second of them rehearsing what looked like a rumba. The episode should post online soon.
Magnolia, at least if Gladys & Tristan have jive, it makes the Dance Duel more straightforward for them, since it’s the Jive as well… I know, but I’m looking for silver linings here!
Smokey, just wish he was singing for one of my favorite teams, Donald and Peta.
Oh, that Dance Marathon is interesting. Curious which dance it will be for the marathon. Not good news for those with injuries or little stamina. If it’s Tuesday, then this might be away of helping those dancers who scored lower on their Monday dance or did not garner many votes. Maybe jive will be used for both the Marathon and dance duel. The previous Marathon’s were swing and mambo, right.
For the Motown songs, I’m still gonna say there could be a Lionel Richie song (he does have an album out right now plus I think he is on the Duets show ABC is promoting.) I kinda of think Endless Love would be cute for Chelsie and Roshon with the movie and all.
I have to think about the song possibilities – I’m really excited about this night of performances.
There are a couple of songs I like for the Foxtrot:
My Girl – Temptations – Derek could really create something cool at the beginning of this song.
Also, I think Cruisin by Smokey Robinson would be an awesome choice for a Foxtrot, it’s smooth and cool and I could see some exciting choreography for this song too.
I was also hoping to hear Smokey Robinson sing ooh baby, baby-I think I just clapped.-LOL
Thanks for the post Courtney!! Can’t wait to get my Motown on!!-LOL
Sally, that is a good point. If they have the jive, which I’m still skeptical about, it would make it “easier” for them if they get stuck in the dance duel – only that one dance to rehearse (as well as this Motown Marathon).
Kat, I’ve got my TiVo set for ET, thanks for the tip!
So next week is a double elimination right???
, Gladys&Tristan(but she will be safe
Hopefully William will be one of the first person to dance(so far he is always dancing right at the end).
I am hoping that Derek&Maria end up in the bottom 2 but they have a good dance so this will be unlikely.
I cant wait for Motown’s week:):):). Im sure it will be great and exciting:):)!
I think that the couples that might struggle next week are: Roshon&Chelsie
And probably Katherine&Mark(I hope not!).
Oh #dwtsfan, can you be any more cheerful-seriously~
Good Luck to all the contestants next week!! Should be a good one.
all good choice
as long as i don’t hear any stevie womnder I’m good (I think he is great but anyone else singing his songs is just bad. American Idol and DWTS has proven that lol)
wonder*
Since the Motown Marathon is on Tuesday, I am wondering if it’s an exhibition/group dance that will not be scored.
I’m going to have to do some homework on those foxtrot songs. Hope Maria and Derek get a good one and I’m going to cancel dwtsfan out by hoping they don’t end up in the bottom 2 LOL.
I was thinking that too, Elmari. maybe they’ll score it, tack it on to the Monday night scores and “magically” calculated with fan votes to determined bottom 3.
Sheery, I agree. They seem to be making things up as they go along this season (TPTB, that is). I find it very disappointing…
Double elimination and a marathon (mambo) and dance duel is what they did in season 9 (Melissa was eliminated first because she was bottom with scores and votes and then Louie voted off by judges in dance duel). If the plan is to save the best dancers then I would think that the Marathon would be scored. Haven’t all Marathons been scored?
Oh I love me some Motown! When I was growing up, that was all my dad listened to even though by the time I was born it was the early 80′s. It was from his youth
He sang me My Girl from the time I was born and he still busts out with it now sometimes. We danced to it at my wedding. It is one of my all time favorite songs, so I will be absolutely overjoyed if someone dances to it.
I hope it they do the marathon, it will not be a scored event, because I am not a fan. The marathon, to me, seems like a way to give their pets better scores, or at least, it has in the past. They’ll knock out others first and the ones the drool over will be the last ones standing. That is how I see it playing out. Blah.
@Harriett – Yep, all marathons have been scored – so if they’re calling this a “marathon”, I think it’s safe to assume it’s being scored. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of couples dancing independently on the floor at the same time…and I’m not sure what good that would do
As for Motown marathon predictions…hmmmm. Depends on what dance they’re supposed to be doing. The marathons that have been done in the past were mambo (season 9), swing (season 10), and rock ‘n’ roll (season 11). Not sure what dance exactly corresponds to Motown…all I can think of is the Temptations dancing in sync and doing those slick kinda moves they were known for.
I also find it odd that the marathon is being done on Tuesday – all the other marathons have been done on performance night, not the results show.
Vogue, if you’re lurking, have you seen the press release for next week’s show? Seems like there’s some things we need to clear up.
I hope it’s true about the marathon. I love those!!
I’m not a huge fan of Motown, but, I’m hoping someone performs or dances to a Jackson 5 or a Diana Ross number!!
And C, no press release yet. Those usually come out in the afternoon or early evening (on Fridays). I’ll be sure to post it when it comes out and post the link here too.
Courtney, thank you so much for this post! Reading through just the titles of the songs, you just gotta get in the groove. Can’t wait for Monday. and even if it isn’t all that I want it to be, it’s got to be better than the 80s flashback of pleather and studs that makes rock week. Give me Motown any day. Anything by Etta James would be perfect, and I have to admit that while I love the song Let’s Get it On, I hope neither Roshon nor William have it this season. Roshon couldn’t handle that one yet, dear boy, and William – I’m cringing at the thought of Carrie Ann and Bruno’s panties flying that that would involve.
Ahh, so they’re scoring the marathon? Since it’s Tuesday, they’ll already have all the vote totals in, which gives TPTB (via their eeeeeeeeeeeevil minions, the Three Stooges) the perfect opportunity to engineer the bottom 3! ….for some odd reason, my extended pinky finger is now at the corner of my mouth, and I’m looking for a hairless cat to pet, and a little person to sit next to….
Vogue, if ANYONE dances to a Jackson 5 number, you can probably bet everything that it’s going to be Katherine and Mark, so he can pull out his usual “Michael Jackson” outfit/stuff.
So let me make sure that I understand. Each couple has to prepare their usual dance PLUS something for the marathon PLUS something for the dance duel just in case. 3 dances in Week 6? SERIOUSLY? Week 8 will seem like a walk in the park with only 2.
LOL Lori!!!!
I heard that Gladys is doing the Jive. Not sure if it’s true, but it’s what I’m hearing.
The song list can be narrowed down somewhat: Etta James, James Brown, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Jackie Wilson, Frankie Lymon, and Chuck Berry weren’t Motown artists.
I’m getting a bit disgusted, really. A marathon dance?? In addition to their regular dance AND a dance duel dance?? Hell, a good dancer like Maria could get the boot in this situation – all her injuries still healing and having to do three dances?? Then there are those who don’t have extreme youth on their side, like Gladys and Melissa. This weeks seems pretty set up to make sure that Roshon is safe. And that Gladys and Melissa aren’t. I just hope that they don’t get a surprise they don’t like with all this bullshit thrown in there.
Regardless, depending on how the pros strategize, we could see some crappy dancing even from the “good” dancers this week – this is too many dances for week 6.
Well, Violet, the top three places in the marathon don’t usually matter too much – and they usually get the top three right, although not necessarily in the correct order, IMO. It’s if you are in the bottom four with an already low score that you get screwed.
It’s funny, to think that their “pets” always get the better scores…ironically, those people are usually the better dancers. Heh.
Well, Heidi, it doesn’t matter to me how many actual points the marathon gives…just that it is another outlet for the judges to change the outcome, especially, as someone else said, if the score on Tuesday night AFTER the votes have been cast.
I don’t agree that their pets are usually better dancers. But, that is my opinion. The only two this season who are left and not very good, IMO are Gladys and Melissa. So somebody in the marathon that is a pretty good dancer will get screwed. I’m willing to bet it won’t be William or Katherine. And I like Katherine.
Well, Kathleen, considering that Roshon has mentioned something about “doing James Brown” in an interview this week, I don’t think we can safely assume that Motown week will strictly be artists on the Motown label. They may be going with music that’s “in the vein” of Motown, or from the same time period, like they did with Classical Week back in season 12. I daresay “Hedwig’s Theme” and “Palladio, First Movement” weren’t written during the “classical” period, but were in the same style.
Except that “Motown” is a trademarked label. If they intend to include non-Motown artists like James Brown, they should call it “Classic Soul Week” instead. Roshon is probably too young to know the difference between Motown and James Brown, anyways. FWIW, Motown weeks on American Idol have always been strictly defined as Motown artists.
Well then, Kathleen, maybe go write a letter to the producers instead of complaining here, or go scold Roshon on Twitter or something. Everyone else just seems to be enjoying the discussion, rather than mincing words about what is and isn’t Motown.
As in previous weeks the music department at DWTS doesn’t exactly follow the theme. With Motown music, they could even include modern Motown from the 90′s like Boys II Men, Shanice, Brian McKnight, and so on. There might be some R&B Soul music mixed in with the Motown.
Okay, I am going to guess that Roshon and Chelsie are dancing to “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” based on Roshon’s comment about “doing James Brown.”
As a follow-up to my prior email, if I’m right, that’s a great song to rumba to. My hips automatically start to sway when the song comes on my iPod. The song is also appropriate to Roshon, especially with Carrie Ann’s comment a few weeks ago referring to him as a “man.”
FWIW, I was trying to help narrow the list down. My point is that I don’t think you can use the trademarked “Motown” name in something as public as AI or DWTS without obligating yourself to the Motown catalog. And I agree with Harriett that we could very well see some 80′s and 90′s Motown as well.
I wonder if there will be any scoring involved in the Motown Marathon?
The marathons have always been scored before, I don’t see them stopping now.
Thanks Heidi, I have kind of drawn a blank. Sorry, It happens sometimes, actually more often than sometimes.
@IrisandLilies I agree that “It’s a Man’s World” would fit the “man” referencing Roshon has gotten. I think it’s a good waltz song which Jason and Edyta danced to in Season 6 and scored really well. Where did Roshon make the James Brown reference this past week?
Just a little side thought. Have you all seen / heard the version where James Brown sings “It’s a Man’s World” with Luciano Pavarotti? Check it out on YouTube if you are interested. Wonderful!
And yes, I do understand James Brown never signed with Motown Records. But his name has come up in other comments, and I thought of this from a few years ago.
My apologies, I didn’t intend that link do that.
Just my two cents, but I think by Motown week they mean the Motown sound not artists from Motown records.
@Harriett
Courtney mentioned it an earlier post. I don’t have any independent knowledge of what Roshon said.
I have a couple more guesses for possible songs on Monday night:
I think these dances will be good for a Foxtrot routine:
Temptations: The Way You Do The Things You Do
Temptations: Stay-From one of the later albums in 90s
Listening to Smokey Robinson songs to see what would fit a rumba. Hmm….maybe one Heartbeat, I second that Emotion (maybe too fast), Crusin, You Really Got a Hold on me, I am I am.
the Temptations “Just My Imagination” might make a good rumba too. From the press release are the songs only gonna be songs recorded by Smokey (and the Miracles too), Martha Reeves, and The Tempations? I am getting excited about this.
Wonder if there will be any other theme weeks. I kinda would like to see a Teen Idol week that spans the 50s to present day. Imagine the possibilities.
Now thinking “My Girl” from the Temptations might make a cute rumba for Roshon and Chelsie.
for me, it would only make sense if the songs were only by Smokey (and the miracles), martha reeves, and the temptations…
a) im guessing they will have to sing for all 8 dances for it to be fair (we already know smokey is singing for maks & melissa)
b) the three acts have a vast variety of hits on their own…why would they need to sing someone elses’ songs? but dwts has done weirder things so i digress…
the nerd in me loves finding connections…but i think its hilarious that roshon’s dad, roy fegan, played bird (bird and the midnight falcons) in The Five Heartbeats, which as most know was loosely based off the temptations and a string of other Motown bands…ha, maybe he’ll give roshon some tips
Dis411 (twitter) has a recent video of Roshon and Chelsie and shows a snipet of their rumba. They both sound like they have colds:(
Love the connections @yo. I do the same thing.
Violet #39…I think with the scenario you R presenting that screwee will be Maria…..TPTB have spent way too much time “pushing” Kathryn and Wm not to want them in the final.
I could see Derek doing something special with “My Girl” – time will tell what they are all doing…..it will be a tiring week for all of them…….Team Menough!
Joanne, I can see Derek doing something special with “my” girl (Maria) too! Oh you meant with the song!
