Dancing with the Stars Season 14, Week 5 – Ratings Watch

Another post in the on-going saga on the DWTS ratings for season 14.  If you want to read previous posts on this topic, you can find them in the following locations:

DWTS Ratings Watch
DWTS 14, Week 1 – Ratings Watch
DWTS 14, Week 2 – Ratings Watch

I skipped a couple weeks, so there is a bit more information in this post than normal. As you will see, DWTS was continuing the slight downward trend but then bumped upward slightly. This is normal, but a bit earlier than past seasons. The results show, on the other hand, seems a lot more erratic – for that reason, I’m going to graph it as well so we can see how it compares to previous seasons.  The only difference now is that American Idol finally mustered enough viewers (or DWTS dipped enough) for it to take second place while DWTS moves into third place. As you will see, they are BARELY beating DWTS and their results show isn’t beating DWTS Results show all the time – the two shows are fighting each other for dominance.

Here are the Nielsens for weeks corresponding to weeks 3, 4 and 5 of DWTS. All ratings were obtained from Zap2It (if you want to see how DWTS is doing in the Demo, click the link).

Week 5

Side note: Am I the only one that is happy as HELL to see Once Upon a Time in the Top 20??  OMG, I love that show. I should start a blog to try to figure it out. 🙂

Anyway, the point of these posts has always been to provide context so when you see articles about “tumbling ratings” you KNOW that the ratings for all shows are down and that DWTS is still a top FIVE show.  Here’s the graph for the season to date, Season 14 compared to other spring seasons:

The question now is, will this season mimic Season 10 or Season 6?? Brief trend upward followed by a continued slide as the weather gets warmed up OR will it continue upward. I can’t guess, but I’ll be watching with interest. 🙂 What about the results show? Well, here’s the graph:

See, there is nothing consistent about the results show ratings EXCEPT the spike at the end of the season to see who wins. Clearly, figuring out the wild up and down numbers in total viewers would require a lot more research than I’m willing to invest. I would IMAGINE that it is some bizarre combination of what else is on to watch, the celebs on the show, the weather…who knows. What I do find interesting is that the results show ratings haven’t slid downward at the same rate as the performance shows – this isn’t the lowest rated spring season of results show…it’s somewhat in the middle. So, I guess that suggests to me that there is a “bottom” to the ratings of BOTH shows. At least for right now. I also seem to recall (and this is JUST recall – I haven’t gone back to check) that in terms of weekly RANK, the results show has actually moved UP. Both Season 12 and Season 14 seem to be averaging a higher rank than spring seasons before them.

There is a rather striking difference between the two graphs…the performance graph has Seasons 6 through 12 grouped together and relatively consistent trend…not so with the results show. I tend to think that people are less likely to watch the results if they’ve got a better choice…or if a great musical act is on.  Perhaps DWTS should quit drawing it out for a whole hour? I’m conflicted. 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

William Shatner Dances With Maria Menounos, Derek Hough Gives Hints On Paso Doble

Pictured above in a fun dance pose is William Shatner and Dancing With The Stars season 14 contestant Maria Menounos. William was a guest on Extra this past week. While promoting his new book “Get a Life” and a Hollywood Charity Horse Show this weekend, William took her in her arms to dance with her. He said he loves Dancing With The Stars. You can watch this fun interview below and see more pictures of them dancing at Getty Images. I wish William would do Dancing With The Stars in the future.

As many of you know, William has also said some really wonderful things about Derek in the past as a dancer. He said Derek is “America’s Greatest Dancer” and compared him to the likes of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Speaking of….did you see this tweet from Derek? He gives a hint of what he and Maria’s Paso Doble might be like…

I can’t wait. I love Derek’s Paso Dobles. They are always explosive. Bring it on, Derek and Maria!!

Dancing With The Stars Season 14 Las Vegas Odds Going Into Week 7

Sorry we are a little late with these, but, I wanted to wait until Miss Heidi got home from her travels this week so she could add her fun input. With that said,…

The new Las Vegas Odds have been posted at Las Vegas Sports Betting. In comparison to last week’s odds, note how Donald and Katherine have switched places for first, but, not by much. Everyone else is in the same order, though I continue to think they (and the judges) are underestimating Roshon and not giving him enough credit for his ability to dance which I think is sad. Let’s get Heidi’s and Courtney’s thoughts and be sure to let us know your thoughts as well in the comments.

The new Las Vegas Odds for this week:

Katherine Jenkins 7/4
Donald Driver 19/10
William Levy 11/4
Maria Menounos 15/2
Jaleel White 12/1
Roshon Fegan 50/1
Melissa Gilbert 50/1

Last week’s Las Vegas Odds:

Donald Driver 19/10
Katherine Jenkins 2/1
William Levy 9/4
Maria Menounos 8/1
Jaleel White 25/1
Melissa Gilbert 30/1
Roshon Fegan 30/1
Gladys Knight 100/1

Courtney: Not much to say this week – I think they’re finally starting to get close to the actual odds.  Kinda sucks, though, that they have put Katherine increasingly closer to 1:1 odds – 1:1 odds signify that you’re basically guaranteed to win, so they must be feeling like Katherine’s got this thing pretty much in the bag.  I would like to think that we’re not at the point where things are set in stone yet – that someone like Donald or Maria might be able to swoop in and make a run for the MBT.  But sadly, with each week that passes and the judges overscore/underscore certain couples, I’m beginning to think we’re stuck with a Katherine/William finale, and the 3rd spot will be whatever poor couple that can weather the sh*tstorm the best.  This season gives me a sad 🙁

Heidi: I dunno…I know an awful lot of Derek fans planning to vote for Donald if Maria gets eliminated. 🙂  I don’t think Katherine has this thing in the bag at all.  The key will be once we get past the dance duels and/or the double elimination. Will they start scoring it more realistically or will they keep over scoring Katherine and William to a ridiculous degree until they have safely gotten rid of  Melissa/Maria/Roshon??? Really, keep giving William and Katherine undeserved tens and start throwing eights at Maria and even lower at Roshon and Melissa and that’s really all you have to do to engineer the finale you want. Why do they want that particular finale?? Because they’ve gotten it in their heads that if they don’t manipulate the proceedings, the “good” dancers will go home and the audience will either be mad or the show will lose credibility. They’ve made the classic mistake of thinking their audience is stupid. Only a small portion of the audience is truly stupid…and unfortunately, those are the ones with the loudest voices. So, how desperate are they for a William/Katherine finale??  I guess we’ll see.

Mark Ballas On DWTS14 Week 7 “This week is promising to be an epic one”

Mark has written about he and Katherine’s New York City press tour this past week at USA Today. He talks of what an honor it was to perform with Katherine on Good Morning America and how she sang “like an angel”. They are back in Los Angeles now practicing their new dances which includes the Rumba for their individual dance. He gives some teasers on it below. “This week is promising to be an epic one,” he writes. Details below including his thoughts about winning the Marathon dance this past week.

Speaking of last week: I want to just say how fun it was to make it all the way in the dance marathon! I’ve never even made it to the point when the floor becomes a free-for-all, so that was my goal. But for Kat and I to win the whole thing was beyond fun and rewarding, not to mention we got to wear my favorite color too — electric green!

Back on to this week. It is classical week, and we have rumba, which is the dance of love. The general feedback from the judges so far is that the rumbas have been a little too raunchy. We want to keep ours classy, sophisticated, elegant and passionate. Also, I am using all traditional choreography with an old classical storyline and costumes that will take you back hundreds of years. To say I’m really excited to perform this with Katherine for you all is an understatement. Another twist this week is the team tangos; we put a little twist on our theme. I think you’re going to love our team!

Wise move and sounds really cool in my opinion.

Good Morning America Does A Cover On Dancing with the Stars Live In Las Vegas (Video)

This is so good! If you missed it yesterday morning, Good Morning America had a great segment on the Dancing With The Stars Live show in Las Vegas. They show clips from the show. You can see Lacey Schwimmer, Kyle Massey, Dmitry Chaplin, Carson Kressley, and more dancing. Cameron Mathison also interviews some of the cast and claims he’s “still got it” too. Note: there’s a funny bit with Tia Carrere about her time dancing with (long haired) Maks too. Don’t miss it and more below!

Also, and as most of you know, our John personally attended the opening show. He also attended the pre and after events. If you haven’t read about how he had an encounter with Tom Bergeron and Conrad Green, you can do so here. Stay tuned as John is planning to post more on this event soon for what he experienced.

Dancing With The Stars 14 Entertainment and Dancing Information for Week 7

Here are some details for the entertainment from the Orlando Sentinel this morning for Week 7 of Dancing With The Stars. They also outline the Team Dances and Dance Duel.

Violinist Joshua Bell opens the show by playing Vivaldi. Soprano prodigy Jackie Evancho, a favorite from “America’s Got Talent,” and Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo will sing as the seven remaining couples dance.

The two-hour show, which starts at 8 p.m., will conclude with team dances. Team Paso has Melissa Gilbert, William Levy and Donald Driver. Team Tango has Katherine Jenkins, Maria Menounos, Roshon Fegan and Jaleel White.

Tuesday’s results show, at 9 p.m., brings back Gavin DeGraw, the fourth celebrity ejected this season. He will sing his new single, “Sweeter.”

In the last dance duel, the two lowest-scoring celebrities and their partners face off on the rumba. The judges will decide which one leaves, and that will be the end of that rule change this season.

And thank goodness for THAT!
