DWTS 14 Week 8 Power Rankings

A few things became abundantly clear to me in the midst of tonight’s show: the judges’ heads have been up William & Cheryl’s asses so long that their oxygen supply has been cut off (and brain damage has occured), Carrie Ann switches motives faster than most people blink, Maria & Derek should probably just knock boots and get it over with, Roshon is this season’s forgotten man, and Katherine’s dancing is about as exciting as eating dry white toast.  Let’s just get straight into it…

1.) William & Cheryl – The pimping of these two has just gotten so out of control that I don’t even know what to say anymore – it’s inane, ridiculous, and it’s putting me off this show entirely.  You guys wonder why I’m so far behind on the cheese? Because this season has left such a bad taste in my mouth, and 70% of it is because of these two and the lavish, undeserved praise they get.  But since me complaining about that does little to deter them, I guess I’ll focus on the dancing, which overall was not as stellar as the judges would have you believe.  That foxtrot? Ok, it wasn’t bad, but I’m still not seeing a whole lot of showmanship from William – the man looks like he’s constipated out there.  And Cheryl’s still doing a whole lot of dancing around him, rubbing herself on him, and generally doing some attention-whoring of Ballasesque proportions.  Go ahead and whine about how I “shouldn’t judge the celeb based on the choreo”, but when all he’s doing is standing there and occasionally gesturing, what the hell am I supposed to think? Am I supposed to just ASSUME he’s a great dancer, even though I don’t get to see it underneath all of his partner’s showboating? The dancing isn’t about William at all – it’s about Cheryl dancing around him.  And that was the story of their paso doble trio as well – it was the Cheryl Burke show, with special guest appearances by Tony Dovolani & William Levy.  There was a lot of walking from place to place, and William noticeably got off-time…although it was only mentioned in passing by one of the judges, while they absolutely HOSED Roshon for the same thing.  I give up.  There’s clearly an agenda in place that necessitates William sticking around as long as possible, and I don’t like it.  With any luck, this whole mess will completely blow up in the faces of TPTB…but my luck hasn’t been so great lately, so I’m not holding my breath.  These two will be safe tomorrow night…

2.) Donald & Peta – Thank GAWD for Donald! The man is the personification of what I want in a celeb on this show: he’s having fun, he’s working hard, and he’s giving us some legitimately GREAT performances.  Aside from Roshon’s foxtrot, this tango was the closest thing to perfection for me in the ballroom round tonight – Donald had the attack, and the way he was snapping his head and his feet was divine! I will say that he still seems to get a bit off-balance here and there, and it seems to happen when he gets a little too excited – hopefully he’ll gain a bit more control over some of his more dynamic movements.  I also have to tip my tiny top hat (which I’m still wearing from the team dances last week ;-)) to Peta, for coming up with some choreo that both pleases Len and is also pleasing to the eye – not an easy balance! And that trio dance? Wooooooooooooowwwww.  Just….WOW.  I think the trio idea overall kinda failed, but this was the one gem of the evening – I don’t think I could have asked for a better group than Donald, Peta, and Karina.  Both ladies rock at jive, and Donald impressed the hell out of me with the way he partnered TWO ladies.  You guys notice that neither of the other guys did that in their trio, right? Probably because it’s f*cking hard – something that doesn’t come naturally to a novice male ballroom dancer.  So he gets a ton of respect from me for handling two very vivacious ladies, and also for just delivering a totally FUN performance…props to all three of them for that.   I can only hope that Donald is growing on other people like he’s grown on me, because at this point, he’s the only one I see as a lock for the finale… Read more..

DWTS14 Week 8 Louis Van Amstel With Some Last Minute Thoughts Before Showtime

Louis breaks it down before showtime with his thoughts and who he’s worried for the most tonight. Note how he is worried for Maria which shocks me. I think she will be fine (unless her feet are an issue tonight?).

Terrible Two-fer
If the pressure of learning two dances to perform in one night wasn’t enough for our top six, DWTS is making sure the stress is stacked higher than a precarious game of Jenga. With two sure-fire eliminations this week, it’s one false (dance) move, and you’re out. “Now, they’re going to separate the boys from the guys and the girls from the women … it’s do or die,” says Amstel. “America’s not stupid … If anyone was banking on using a trick to win over the audience, it’s too late. Now you’ve got to show your true colors.”

And who’s staring down the barrel of elimination in Amstel’s eyes? He says Melissa Gilbert, Roshon Fegan, and Maria Menounos are in trouble. “I’m surprised Melissa is still there, based on the judges’ scores,” says Amstel. But when it comes to Menounos, who was rewarded with a perfect score alongside her partner Derek Hough last week, Amstel is a little more hopeful. “I love Maria to death and this is Derek’s best season as far as choreography goes. Still I’m a little worried for her,” he says.

Two’s Company, Three’s a Party!
But who needs a double when you can have a triple? This week also deals the twist of a never-before-seen (on DWTS) trio dance for each of our top six finalists. This means that each celeb will dance with his or partner as well as another professional dancer. “For the pro that’s still in the competition, adding another pro can help. It makes it a little easier,” says Amstel.

And while the idea of choreographing a group routine and teaching the celeb to handle the dynamics of an extra person on the dance floor might test a skill the pros haven’t yet honed, this could actually help take some of the heat off of the celeb contestant. “This is kind of a break,” Amstel says. “Normally you have two solo dances and you have to worry about the celebrity, but here you can make it more fun and entertaining.” Of course, being that we’re down to six, the contestants will also dance regular duets with their partners as well.

I love his thoughts on the Trio dance. Who’s ready?

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough – Crazy in Vegas

Cross posted from PureDerekHough: This video was on Extra’s website and is one of the more hilarious things I’ve seen out of this duo. OMG, funny! And Derek has caught Maria’s laugh. Can you imagine being the guy in the elevator??

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Roshon Fegan On His Favorite Performance On Dancing With The Stars And More

J-14 interviewed Roshon about Dancing With The Stars, his music, and Shake It Up!! Below is what he said on our show. Be sure to see more at the link including a cool picture of him with his quitar.

J-14: What has been your favorite performance so far on Dancing with the Stars?
Roshon Fegan: I really liked my samba. I also got to do a great tribute to Michael Jackson and wear a wig and everything. That was a lot of fun!

J-14: Have any of your celeb friends come out to support you on DWTS?
Roshon: Britney [Spears] came out with her fiancé Jason Trawick. Jason is a great supporter and friend of mine.He said he was going to bring his fiancé, but I forgot that his fiancé was Britney! She even Tweeted about it after the performance. Bella [Thorne] and Zendaya [Coleman] came the first week and former co-star Demi [Lovato] are definitely still close friends and support each other. I just talked to her not that long ago!

J-14: If you could do a dance routine to any song, what song would you choose?
Roshon: It would definitely have to be a really cool upbeat song. I’d love to do one of my own [songs] as well. It’s always good when you dance to one of your own tracks. I would definitely be up for that.

Lots of luck to Chelsie and Roshon tonight. I’m especially excited to see how Sasha Farber will help light them up? It’s going to be fun!

DWTS Season 14 Stats Class – Week 8

The home stretch! Heading into the Last Third of the season. You know what that means? It means that every couple is going to be dancing two dances for the next two weeks… each! This ought to be fun.

So what I am going to do is that below each celebrity I am going to put the predicted scores breakdown for the first dance and do the same for the second dance. Then I will put in the predicted rank as well as my personal comments on each celebrity. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep them all straight in my head 🙂

MELISSA GILBERT
Dance 1: Foxtrot
Average Scores:
– Age: 23.000
– Occupation: 25.500
– Professional Partner: 26.000
Predicted Score: 25

Dance 2: Samba
Average Scores:
– Age: 23.571
– Occupation: 24.500
– Professional Partner: 26.400
– “Trio Partner”: N/A
Predicted Score: 25

Predicted Rank: 6th
Comments: Since we do not know for sure that Melissa would perform the Waltz for her Ballroom dance… but just for the sake of it the only other Actress in their 40s to have done the Waltz was Season 10’s Pamela Anderson on Week 7, but she received a 24. Now that we know that the Foxtrot is what Melissa is dancing for her Ballroom dance, the scores have changed a little bit, as well as her placing… unfortunately. Also unfortunate is that no other actress in their 40s have done the Foxtrot this late in the season. The closest being that Season 5’s Jennie Garth and Season 6’s Marissa Jaret Winokur (who were both Actresses in their 30s) received a 26 and 25 respectively. On the other hand there is no other celebrity in the exact same categories as Melissa that has done a Samba this late in the season. Melissa has been gaining steam slowly and surely… but there is no telling if that upward trend would continue after the scores last week.

ROSHON FEGAN
Dance 1: Foxtrot
Average Scores:
– Age: 25.000
– Occupation: 25.500
– Professional Partner: N/A
Predicted Score: 25

Dance 2: Paso Doble
Average Scores:
– Age: 27.778
– Occupation: 25.000
– Professional Partner: N/A
– “Trio Partner”: N/A
Predicted Score: 26

Predicted Rank: 5th
Comments: Unfortunately there were no Disney related celebrities that have done the Foxtrot in the last four weeks of the season. On the other hand Season 3’s Monique Coleman and Season 12’s Chelsea Kane both did the Paso Doble in their Week 7 and received a 27 and 26 respectively. Roshon has been getting inconsistent scores and even though I could see him receiving a 25/26 for his dances, whether he actually would is another story altogether.

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

PureDWTS Maks Chmerkovskiy And Melissa Gilbert “The Dancing Underdogs” (Video)

On he and Melissa’s dances tonight which includes his brother Val, Maks tells Good Morning America, “I think we’re going to be great, I think we’re going to be fun and entertaining.” Maks is so proud of Melissa making it this far on Dancing With The Stars being it’s so physically demanding. Melissa has nothing, but, good things to say about her partner calling “sweet”, “protective”, and “caring”. He also has the “best ….” ehum. lol Note: it’s Melissa’s birthday Tuesday and she hopes she won’t be eliminated. More below in a take from the link. You can watch the interview in a video below courtesy of Good Morning America.

“I’m very proud of her, I really am, especially with us trying to stay entertaining, it’s physically very hard,” he told Rycroft.

Getting the routines down requires a lot of work, and during the vignettes of the pair practicing that air before each performance, Chmerkovskiy has appeared to be a tough taskmaster.

Asked what he was like the rest of the time that the public didn’t see, Gilbert replied: “He’s really sweet and he’s really got a big heart and he’s very protective of me and he’s very caring.”

Chmerkovskiy reminded her he had “an amazing ass,” and she agreed.

Tonight they will face a new challenge: Each of the six remaining couples will be paired with a pro who has already been voted off this season. Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy will dance a samba, and they’ll be joined by his younger brother, Val.

“I think we’re going to be great, I think we’re going to be fun and entertaining,” Chmerkovskiy said.

Gilbert says she’s not ready to go home yet, and sent a message for all the fans who’ve kept her in the competition: “Just keep doing whatever you’re doing, we’re working really hard to earn all of your hard work.”

“It’s my birthday on Tuesday and I don’t want to get eliminated on my birthday,” she said.

UPDATE: Melissa has written a new blog at People. Here is a take from the link on their dances tonight. Be sure to see the link for a funny story for happened to her yesterday.

Our dances this week are a lot of fun. First I have a fox trot with Maks to “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart. Our story for the dance follows the lyrics: nasty cougar takes advantage of sweet, studious young man. There might even be a little kiss in their somewhere.

Our second dance is the samba. There is a twist, though. Each couple got to pick an eliminated pro or troupe member to dance with them. Since Maks and I were at the bottom of the leader board, we got to pick first. Of course we chose Val! So, once again I’m the middle of the Chmerkovskiy sandwich. It doesn’t suck to be me!
