DWTS Season 15 – Most Likely Derek Hough’s Last?

Derek’s last season? Most likely, according to him, via USA Today:
Derek Hough might be hanging up his Dancing With the Stars shoes.
The three-time DWTS champion, who is expected to be part of the line-up of Dancing With the Stars All-Stars, is considering making the season his last.
“This season is kind of my swan song,” Hough tells USA TODAY. “It’s my last hurrah.”
Hough spoke to USA TODAY for a story about dancers breaking into movie roles. He will star in the film Cobu out next year and is looking at other projects. He says this is a difficult task with the consuming DWTS workload.
“It’s really difficult to do both, impossible really,” Hough says. “This show is full time…there is zero flexibility. And I want to do other projects. I want to push myself into other areas.”
“And this is my 10th season, a great bench mark,” he adds. “You just kind of feel it. I need to take that chance. It’s important.”
Adam Shankman, a judge on So You Think You Can Dance who directed Hough’s sister Julianne Hough in Rock of Ages, believes Derek is due for movie stardom.
“I think he’s the next (break-out),” says Shankman. “He feels a moment away to me.”
Well, folks, this is what I’ve been saying all along. It is virtually impossible to do both, and with Cobu out next year it will be a good time to make that transition. And Adam Shankman, I adore you – this is the same thing I’ve been saying for a while too. Derek has STAR written all over him.

I just posted this on purederekhough but I might as well post it here too:
I’m glad that he’s on this season – it wouldn’t really be an Allstar-season without him. ;D
But I do agree that it will be a great way for him to finish the show too.
He’s already shown everyone what he can do in the ballroom and probably wants new challenges.
He’s got so many tallents and can move in so many directions after DWTS.
Personally I’d love to see him back on Broadway or in the West End but he’s also got promising career opportunities in film and music too.
I have a feeling we might see him back in the DWTS ballroom next year though – dancing with Boa or Allison(or both) to promote Cobu.
I don’t know if you saw it, Gitte, but when a lot of fans were tweeting Allison and Derek bemoaning the fact that they didn’t get an Emmy nominations, Allison responded with a “you’re very sweet, but Derek and I aren’t done yet (paraphrasing)”. They’ve had something in the works for a while which neither is sharing. But Derek was recording music for it, in addition to doing something with Allison. I hope we see it this season on a results show.
I know this is a great choice for him since he hasa great future ahaead of him but if they don’t get henry as competing pro for seson 16 they would be nuts. he is around derek’s height and is equally as good. just kepp sasha and ted v away from that spot as a competing pro.
or they can get back damien. either way I’m good.
Well I can’t say I’m surprised in any way, shape, or form. I do admit I would miss seeing Derek on the show, but I also think he can do so much more outside of DWTS. He’s got my support no matter what and I wish him all the luck in the future.
However, my routine on DWTS will be more fragile now, I almost always rooted for Derek’s partners, not just because they were with Derek perse, but because of what he ended up doing with them. The only one I don’t recall voting for at all was Shannon. And in Brooke’s season I recall throwing Cody a lot of votes as well, and in Maria’s season (while she was the one I was rooting for) I helped Roshon out at times. After he’s gone, I wonder who will be the pro to bring out the best in their celebs. I am leaning towards Kym, but I am also hearing a lot about new pros coming in. We’ll see
And I agree with vin, I would love to see Henry compete as a pro and I’d love for Damian to come back. Actually, I’d really like to see Teddy V as well. Sasha I’m not so sure about, sometimes I like him, sometimes he seems a bit too cocky for my tastes.
Yes, I saw that Heidi.
I still don’t understand why they didn’t get a nomination. Especially since a SYTYCD dancer was part of it.
Remember the days when Derek got TWO nominations the same year? Those were the days.
Very curious to find out what it is thay have planned.
I do hope we will se him do something on a few result shows this season.
sasha just reminds me of mark too much. like mark with more tricks.
Aw the show won’t be the same without Derek, his choreography is just amazing!
10 seasons is quite a while. He’s got to take the chance while it’s open. He could likely come back to DWTS later if that’s what he wanted to do.
I feel like ten seasons is more than enough. He also should take chances while he can. He has proven his talents on dwts and now hopefully more can see in other platforms like film, tv and stage. He also can always come back to dance on results shows and choreo routines. His choreography will be missed. I think other pros have learned from watching Derek how to be “smarter” about the show but he still is the best a showcasing partners and memorable routines. Wish only the best for him as I did his sister when she left.
Please not Sasha, i can appreciate he`s a really good dancer, but i don`t want to see gymnastics in every routine. I really love Teddy v but i have to say i`ve been watching some of the troupe dances and Teddy always seemed to be the weakest out of the men, his lines were just wishy washy. I don`t think there will ever be another choreographer like Derek, he has vision like nobody else, if he does go…. you will be missed sir!
Derek and I started on DWTS in the same season!
Hearing this for me is bittersweet! I knew it was just a matter of time before he’d move on but still I love watching dance and appreciate his talents, energy and brillance in choreography plus he’s pleasant on the eyes too!-woohoo!
He is incredibly talented and should branch out into different arenas like acting, broadway, song writing, etc. He is the real deal! A triple threat. I hope he gets a great partner this season as I look forward to seeing the magic creates on the dance floor.
So many accomplishments to be proud of: 3x Emmy nominated and the only 3X DWTS champion with a host of amazing and memorable performances. Derek’s set the bar high, he should proud. Gonna miss him.
I had a feeling last season that we would be lucky to enjoy him for one more season on DWTS. The show will not be the same without him.
I’m anxious to hear and see him perform his many talents. He is so natural and effortless in whatever he does.
Whatever he decides to do, I hope this isn’t the end of his dancing. Derek truly is our modern day Fred Astaire!!! I hope he capitalizes off that in a huge way. The future is his to do whatever he wants. As for DWTS, hopefully we’ll see him come back for pro dances, mentoring, etc.
Yes, Vog, those were almost my exact thoughts. I hope whatever he pursues in the future includes dancing. And of course, just like before he came, DWTS will nenver be the same once he is gone.
It was inevitable, with all his other talents, that he would leave DWTS eventually. And I’m sure he will be gorgeous on the big screen and we all know about his musical abilities. There are alot of good actors, singers and musicians but Derek’s unique, and RARE talent and gift, is his ability to emote thru dancing. To be memorable and “affecting” and to interpret a story thru dance that only a handful of people have ever been able to do. The the percentage of successful, famous dancers who had not only the vision to tell stories, translate emotion and be able to execute it themselves, is very small. It will be a huge loss for dance and everyone who loves it, all the audiences who will never get to see the expanse of his talent, and I think, also a loss for him. I think dance is the way for him to reach all the heights of the combination of all his artistic gifts
It’s great to be famous and popular…but it’s historic to be unique and legendary.
