DWTS 15 All-Star Season Music Suggestions & Wish List
So we’re at t-minus 2 weeks until the premiere, and of course, we’re all curious about what songs we might hear this season. Since we don’t plan to reveal any potential song spoilers until just before the premiere (stay tuned ;-)), we thought we’d take this opportunity to share some of our picks for music we’d like to see on the show – as well as a few songs some of our readers suggested on Twitter. I’ll try to update the list with songs you guys suggest, but I can’t make any guarantees. Life gets busy 😛 But make your picks good ones, because you never know who might be taking a gander at this list, looking for inspiration 😉
Court’s picks:
“Sunglasses at Night” – Corey Hart – This has been my “OMG, I’ll pee my pants if they actually use this!” song pick since Guilty Pleasures week in season 12. I am DYING to see someone (perhaps Joey or Drew) do a paso doble to this, complete with dark sunglasses and a big dose of tongue-in-cheek humor. The cheese factor would be through the roof!
“It’s Not Unusual” – Tom Jones This song just BEGS for a Carlton Banks-esque quickstep from Mark. BONUS: It would probably embarass the bejeesus out of Bristol in the process. 🙂
“I’d Rather Go Blind” – Etta James With Etta’s passing earlier this year, I find myself with a new appreciation for her music – and I think this would make a GORGEOUS Viennese waltz.
“Good Time” – Owl City feat. Carly Rae Jepsen A totally fun, guilty pleasure song – I could see them using it for a team cha-cha or cha-cha relay.
“Cinema (Skrillex Mix)” – Benny Benassi I realize that, between AGT & SYTYCD, this song has gotten pretty overused this summer – but in both instances, it’s been used for a hip-hop routine. But I’d like to see what some of our pros could do with it – this has a Derek or Mark freestyle written all over it.
Heidi’s picks:
“Swallowed by the Night” – The Floating MenMy favorite Nashville band of all time. Alternative, acoustic and entertaining as hell. This sounds like a quickstep to me, but I could be wrong.
“Goody Two Shoes” – Adam Ant Kick someone’s ass as a jive. Someone like Bristol. 😉 *snerk*
“Come Dancing” – The Kinks The Kinks just make me laugh.
“Hella Good” – No DoubtReally, anything by No Doubt. I got into them thanks to the TV show Alias – loved it.
“Slow Down” – Brian Setzer Because I said so. 🙂
Vogue’s picks:
“Give Me All Your Luvin'” – Madonna feat. Nicki Minaj & MIA Wow, what a Dancing With The Stars show stopper this could be if this song was done for a pro number with ALL the pros and the troupe.
“Finally Found You” – Enrique Iglesias – I’m hoping Enrique will come back for another song performance with the pros dancing to this new song. He’s such a great supporter of the show.
“Partynauseous” – Kendrick Lamar feat. Lady Gaga – This new single is yet to be released, but, you just know it’s going to make a strong showing. I’d like to see what Derek and Shawn could create for it.
“Masterpiece” – Madonna Sorry to add another Madonna song, but, this just can’t be helped. “Masterpiece” was the theme song for Madonna’s movie last year called “W.E.”. It won a Golden Globe Award this year for “Best Original song” and she’s currently singing it on tour. It is truly one of Madonna’s best ballads to date (and I didn’t think she could ever top “I’ll Remember”). It would make such a touching song for a slow waltz and sure to melt hearts if done right.
“Una Musica Brutal” – Gotan Project I love any and all songs by the Gotan Project. You might remember Peta and Donald doing a Tango to “Santa Maria” last season. Well, “Una Musica Brutal” would be another winner for a show stopping Tango. I’d love to see it.
Lori’s picks:
“Come Wake Me Up” – Rascal FlattsSince the first time I heard it, I’ve been wanting to see a Viennese waltz to this song, because it just seems to be SCREAMING out to me, that it needs some waltz choreography. It already seems to have the 1 2 3 and the rise and fall that’s needed…
“Wanted” – Hunter HayesThis YOUNG kid is an amazing artist…he’s only 20, and for his debut album, he wrote all of the songs, sang every part in every song, and played every instrument on the entire album. Long process to lay each track separately. This song is beautiful, and a nice slow rumba song (I think) and I just like the song!
“Another Brick in the Wall” – Pink FloydI love the conflict between the teacher and the students, and the mind control aspect….
“Gangnam Style” – PSYIt’s catchy and quirky, and a very fun song.
John’s picks:
NOTE: John sustained some kind of neck injury & is currently bedridden (#getbettersoon @techguy) so he was only able to come up with one song. He gave me carte blanche to pick some others for him…but let’s just say he should thank his lucky stars I didn’t, because if I had to guess what kind of music John listens to, this would be my first guess. 😉 -Court-
“Because of You” – Kelly Clarkson & Reba McEntireI’d love to see them dance to this song…although the band might slaughter it 🙂
Reader picks:
“I Won’t Give Up” – Jason Mraz
“Lights” – Ellie Goulding
“Super Bass” – Nicki Minaj
“Give Your Heart a Break” – Demi Lovato
“One More Night” – Maroon 5
“Someone to Watch Over Me” – Ella Fitzgerald
Erin and Maks did their Argentine Tango to Una Musica Brutal.
Just a couple songs I’d love to see on the show. 🙂
I saw this one used on the Australian Version:
“Like It Like That” by Guy Sebastian. It makes for a fun Jive. 🙂
“Princess Of China” by Coldplay feat. Rihanna. I know this song got big over summer, and someone on this website is bound to roll their eyes at me, but I like it. 🙂
“Jar Of Hearts” by Christina Perri. I’m still waiting of this to be used as a Rumba.
“Parachute” by Cheryl Cole. You know, the one Derek was in? 😉 I’d make for an interesting Argentine Tango, to say the least.
I knew we’d be seeing “Sunglasses” on Courtney’s list! *LOL*
Great list guys!! Hey Vogue I think Maks and Erin did their AT to “Una Musical Brutal”, but it WOULD be awesome to hear that song used again, it was fantastic as a tango. Gangnam Style would be HILARIOUS 🙂
They used “Hella Good” in Kurt and Anna’s cha cha, but again, it’s a very fun song, wouldn’t mind seeing it again 🙂
I was actually thinking about “Good Time” too, it does sound like a high energy, fun number they could use for a team dance or something similar.
As for some of my picks, I would say:
“Ballroom Blitz” by Sweet. They used this for a pro group number a LONG time ago, but I don’t think they did a great job that time around, and I think it would be awesome as a quickstep.
“God Gave Me You” by Dave Barnes. Most recognize the newer version by Blake Shelton, but I LOVE the original and it would be really sweet as a rumba I think.
“One Week” by Barenaked Ladies. Really fun song. Not 100% sure what it could be used for, but it’s such a joy to listen to because it’s so goofy and whimsical 🙂
“Drops of Jupiter” by Train. It’d make a fantastic rumba song IMO
“Two Princes” by Spin Doctors. I think Aaron and Karina did a 90s samba to this, but I’d like to hear it again. One of my favorite 90s jams 🙂
“I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth. Saw this as a jive on SCD once and it was ADORABLE. One of my favorite jives I’ve ever seen.
The list could go on and on, but those are some I pulled off the top of my head. Great music suggestions! All of you!
Thanks, Court for doing this post. Now I’ll have lots of music to check out, and it might get my slow brain working on some suggestions of my own.
Off the top of my head I have only one suggestion and it’s for a results show. I’d love to have Thompson Square perform “Glass” and have two of our pros dance a rumba to it.
I want to see a viennese waltz to “If I Aint Got You” by Alicia Keys. I have a feeling “Dance Again” by Jennifer Lopez is going to be used for the opening pro number. I’d like to see someone to a rumba to “Cry” by Alexx Calise. I’d love to see “Addicted” by Kelly Clarkson. I think a fun theme week would be a movie score week, except only using John Williams pieces. I’m not going to be surprised if we hear Call Me Maybe or One Direction, because they’re so big right now. This wish is just for Apolo and Karina, they would dominate “On the Floor” by Jennifer Lopez.
Not gonna lie, I also want to see a Hunger Games inspired pro number. Sue Me.
don’t know why Jason Mraz’s “I’m yours” never became a foxtrot.
Wanna No doubt’s Settle down as salsa
I agree with Vogue. Masterpiece by Madonna would be great, especially for a Viennese Waltz or something along those lines.
hmmmm…
Rumba
– Maybe by Enrique Iglesias
– Don’t Speak by No Doubt
– Make You Feel My Love (Adele version)
– California King Bed by Rihanna
Cha Cha
– S&M by Rihanna
– We Found Love by Rihanna
– Payphone by Maroon 5
– She Wolf by Shakira
songs I would like to see be used
– Pumped up Kicks by Foster the People
– Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson (maybe more as a paso)
– Blow by Ke$ha (Paso?)
– 50 Ways to Say Good-bye by Train (I don’t know why, I just like the song)
I believe Drops of Jupiter was used twice on the show already, one was Train actually performed it with Louis and Karina, the other was Kurt and Anna’s rumba
This is a really great list, with the bonus that it inspired a few new iPhone playlists this week. 😉 Courney’s list edges out the others for me and now I find myself bizarrely fascinated with the idea of both “Sunglasses at Night” and “It’s Not Unusual.” However, anything by Tom Jones could be a complete kick. How about “You Can Leave Your Hat On?” (Did they do that one already though?) And I’ll climb on the Train train as well since I love just about anything by them. Thanks, Ladies (and John).
PS Ditto to the “get well soon,” John
Sorry to hear that John, I hope you will be better soon.
As for the songs, I’d like these ones
Uprising by Coldplay as a Paso Doble
Yumeji’s theme from In the Mood for Love as a waltz
California King Bed by Rihanna as a rumba (and oddly enough Russian Roulette too)
Back in Time by Pitbull and S&M by Rihanna as cha cha cha
I don’t think you anymore, but I don’t think about you anyless by Hungry ghosts as an argentine tango (but it’s very slow)
Nho Antone Escaderote by Cesaria Evora as a samba
Hoping for Without You by David Guetta and Usher as a rumba.
Ooo, this is fun and my list is long:
Pipettes “Your Kisses are Wasted on me”–Jive
Corrine Bailey Rae “I wanna be your lover” — cha cha maybe
Mazzy Star “FadeInto You” –waltz
Garbage #1 Crush –Paso
David Garrett “He’s a Pirate” –Paso (classical night)
Up Soundtrack–waltz
Duffy “Well, Well”–cha cha
Janet Jackson (any of her songs)
Kylie Minogue “Love at First Sight” –cha cha
Katie Melue “Just Like Heaven” waltz
Beth Ditto (anything from her too like Open Heart Surgery)
Jann Arden “insensitive” –rumba
Bob Seger “We’ve Got Tonight” –rumba
Goldfrapp “We Radiate”–chacha
Michael Jackson “Wanna Be Startin Something”–chacha
Bryan Ferry “Slave for Love” –rumba
Carole King “Will you still love me tomorrow” –waltz or rumba
Jeff Buckely “Everybody Here Wants You” rumba
Limousines “Internet Killed the Video Star” –cha cha
marvelous 3 “Freak of the week”
stabbing Westward “what Do I have to do?” –paso (it would be very dark and gothic paso)
They could a number to Bod Geldoff’s “I don’t like Mondays” but change the wording to Tuesdays. Also, I would like it if they had a 50’s/60′ wlikened hsome routs/singers perform like they did with Motown week.

“Tonight, Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae (jive/cha cha/samba)
“Mean” by Taylor Swift (foxtrot or quickstep maybe)
“Part of Me” by Katy Perry (cha cha or paso)
“Paradise” by Coldplay (i have no idea which dance but would love to see it)
“Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People (another one that I can’t really pinpoint a dance for but still would love to see)
any song from Bon jovi
“Payphone” by Maroon Five
“What Makes you beautiful” by one direction
“Here’s to Us” by Halestorm
Wow this thread could go on all season! 🙂
LOVE the idea of “Sunglasses at Night”!
I thought of Pumped Up Kicks too, but not sure if the subject matter would fly?
I suggested “Someone to Watch Over Me” and Amy Winehouse has a great version if anyone’s interested.
A Few Other Suggestions:
Train “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”
Selena Gomez & the Scene “Love You Like a Love Song”
Lauryn Hill “Doo Wop (That Thing)”
The Hives “Hate to Say I Told You So”
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals “Paris (Ooh La La)”
Looking forward to listening to everyone else’s picks too!
I would love to see a group number/pro dance to “Blow Me One Last Kiss” by Pink (or at least a cha cha to it…..maybe Pam and Tristan or Kirstie and Maks)
The Pumped Up Kicks cover (by Owl Eyes) could be used as a foxtrot, possibly?
The One Direction love just cracks me up. I was watching X Factor UK on the internet the season they were on and as soon as Simon and Nicole put them together I said they would be HUGE. No brainer on that one.
I never knew until now that I needed to see Mark dance the Carlton to that song, and now I don’t think I will be happy until it happens! Its all your fault lol
First, get well soon, John!
I really hope “Lights” does get used this year. There is another Rhianna song I love, I think it’s called “Nothin to lose” ? I’d like to see that one, too, but I’m not sure on dance style. I would love a rumba to “Remind Me” by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. A cha cha ( I think) to “Good Girl” by Carrie Underwood. Maybe a paso to “Blown Away” by Carrie as well. Can you tell I’m a huge fan? 🙂
And Lori, I love your first two pics. “Come Wake Me Up” and “Wanted” are two of my favorite songs right now. I listen to them all the time! It would be awesome to see them on the show. “Come Wake Me Up” really, really gets to me. I’ve recently read the book “Mistaken Identity” about Laura Van Ryn and Whitney Cerak, and the song always makes me think about Laura and her boyfriend at the time she died. He’s married now, I think, but that was just such a horribly tragic situation and that song evokes such emotion!!
*totally meant “picks” not “pics”. LOL
Ohhhh man! I do this every day…listen to my Ipod songs and go “what dance would be appropriate?”
Some of these choices might suck….I need to update my songs bahaha
“Alejandro” Lady Gaga – Paso
“Bad Things” Jace Everett – Country Western (yeah…I went there)
Agreed on “California King Bed” – Rumba
….my weird choice….”Cirlce of Life” ….Lion King…..don’t ask. It’s a guilty pleasure.
“Complainte de la Butte” – Rufus Wainwright – Waltz or Viennese Waltz
“Creep” The Scala and Kolacny Brothers version – Waltz, Viennese Waltz
“El Tango de Roxanne” Moulin Rouge soundtrack….take your pick I LOVE this song.
“Everybody Talks” Neon Trees – Jive
“Georgia on my Mind” Ray Charles – Waltz
Agreed on “Good Girl” Carrie Underwood, they danced to it last season when she performed. Fun song.
“Tanguera” Tango Argentino – …..obviously Argentine Tango 🙂
I gotta stop or else I’ll go on all day.
Alicia Keys “Not Even The King” – Rumba
All American Rejects “Walk Over Me” – Jive
Katrina “Shame On Me” – Paso?
Hot Chelle Rae “I Like It Like That” – Cha Cha
One Direction “One Thing” – ?
One Direction “What Makes You Beautiful” – Cha Cha
Pitbull “Shake Senora” – Salsa
Christina Aguilera “Ain’t No Other Man” – ?
Cher Lloyd “Want You Back” – Samba
Plain White T’s “Rhythm Of Love” – Foxtrot
“Dance Again” makes sense for the opening number, but for some reason I have Stefano’s “I’m On A Roll” stuck in my head 😉
@Melissa G (#24) We re in agreement over “Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees. That’d be a fun Jive. 🙂
You see?
A lot of good songs and most of them not used yet.
#Norecycledsongscampaign
ahahah
Wow, great suggestions. The only one I came up with that wasn’t already mentioned is:
“She’s So Mean” (Matchbox Twenty)
I’m thinking this fun, upbeat song would make a great cha-cha, but only for one of the gals who can play up those lyrics!
Keep dreaming, Carlos – I can already tell you that’s NOT going to happen this season.
And if you guys like the idea of “Sunglasses at Night” as a paso or “It’s Not Unusual” as a quickstep, tweet Joey & Mark to tell them – I’ve suggested it to them via Twitter. And word on the street is that some of the pros are still looking for suggestions for a certain theme week…;-)
I am blown away by the amazing and creative song choices people have shared, as well as the great songs offered by the PDWTS team. I haven’t any new ones to add, but just wanted to say how impressed I am by everybody’s choices!
Thanks DW 🙂
And here’s a tantalizing little hinty-hint for you guys: one of the songs mentioned in this post (either in the Pure staff’s picks or the comments section) WILL be used on premiere night 😉 Any guesses?
Is this premiere night dance song the opening pro dance or competitive? If it’s the opening I’m going with my gut feeling of Dance Again. If it’s competitive, I’m thinking its a newer song, maybe Lights, Give Your Heart a Break, or Call Me Maybe. a lot of the premiere dances have been new hits, so that’s why I’d pick one of those.
Carly Rae Jepsen or Jason Mzaz songs.
Kind of hoping Toxic by Britney Spears will get used for tango again. Like A G6 for cha-cha-cha? Hahaha
One More Night-Maroon 5
Hall of Fame-The Script
Be Calm-Fun.
and…
GANGAM STYLE-PSY
@Courtney: Awesome! Any of the songs would be great. I’m going to guess it is the Tom Jones one. I hope it is (and Bristol and Mark get it…..she already is so self conscious making her do the Carlton dance would be funny though)
@Courtney: I’m on board for a “Sunglasses at Night” on DWTS campaign! Who’s with me?!
Also should include Gangam Style somewhere! LOL @kashti
Wouldn’t it be funny to have the Pros do a dance to that song though? See, you should have selected some music for me.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Recovery is slow but steady. I mostly feel bad for my wife. I’m lucky to have her.
It would not surprise me to see the opening dance be Gangam Style. It’s really the perfect song for it. *LOL*
Good to hear you’re doing better, John! And you tell you’re wife how lucky you are every day, right? 🙂 I’m pretty sure you do. *hugs*
*SIGH* You know… I do know the difference between you’re and your.
