PureDWTS POLL: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which was the best? VOTE
Annie Barrett of EW wrote up a piece on Dancing With The Stars last night! She’s a hoot always and seems to always voice what the fans generally think without minsing words. Did she do the same again? Read on to see….
Congrats to Team ‘Gangnam Style’ — a.k.a. American Psy — for delivering what was in many ways the best and worst group dance Planet Mirrorballus has ever seen. Mostly worst! It was the best if you love tepid messes and things that make no sense, which obviously I do because it’s season 15 and I’m still sitting here in my fringed boots typing about an alternate universe. Like Kelly Monaco said, “Sometimes… trainwrecks are fun to watch.”
Somehow this group f(l)ail earned Kelly, Kirstie, Emmitt, and Not-At-All-Powerful Captain Gilles three 9s, probably because if the judges had scored it fairly the entire leaderboard would have been messed up. I’m fine with that. I might even award them all 9s myself provided I’d never have to see Gilles peering into Peta’s crotch, Kirstie and Maks’ “mat exercises,” and Bruno sniffing O Captain His Captain’s lointowel ever, ever again. EWWWW.com.
LOL! She’s too funny!! I still can’t believe the judges would give Team Gangham “9′s”?
So, we’re curious on some Poll numbers for the fans favorite TEAM DANCE? No, Polls aren’t always accurate, but, our Polls at PureDWTS seem to be pretty close. So, what do you think: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which Team Dance did you think was the best this week? Note: this isn’t a Poll for who your favorite dancers are. Try to keep them out of it and only vote on the dances themselves? If you need to watch or relive the dances again, you can do so at the end of this post!
Thanks so much for your vote! Be sure to tell us how you voted in comments too if you like!

Ok, I bet you know how I’m going to vote: Team CALL ME MAYBE hands down! It had everything from technique to entertainment!!!
Hi! I feel really confused about this line
“So, we’re curious on some Poll numbers for the fans favorite TEAM DANCE and if you agree with the judges that Team Gangham was the best dance of the two?”
I thought that Call Me Maybe received a higher score so how are the judges saying that Gangnam was better? Please clarify.
I loved Call Me Maybe and agree that Gangnam was a hot mess.
Still confused by this post though…
CALL ME MAYBE was a team dance, i am still trying to work out the other one!
Yeah… Team Call Me Maybe got a 29.5 and Team Gangnam got a 27, what’s up folks?
And seriously, you need confirmation about which was the better dance? Anyone with half a brain, hell, a quarter of a brain knows that CMM was the better dance and I don’t think anyone, anywhere said differently or can vote differently in your poll if they want to have any credibility.
So, for me, CMM was definitely the better dance, but I enjoyed GS more and I think GS will be remembered more fondly by a lot of viewers. So the question is geared to get the answer you want.
My apologies LG! I made some corrections.
I think I will go hide now. lol
Sorry Evaine.
gangnam style THE BEST!!
I’m sorry too, Vogue. *hugs*
There was nothing enjoyable about GS and it will be remembered as a sloppy, insulting, crude dance. It looked like they just threw it together at the last minute. It was as enjoyable as watching a 30 car pileup on the freeway! Did not deserve 27 for that mess.
The better and throughly entertaining dance was Call Me Maybe. That team took the time to choreograph a complete routine. Loved the transitions to each couple – very inventive! Kudos to them for caring enough to do a great routine!
Call Me Maybe – the best dance and worthy of being s pro number. Unforgettable!
Yup, Call Me Maybe was leagues above that GAGnam Mess, and to top it off. None of the guys felt the need to go shirtless, pantless, or do any of the other desperate things the C-bros and now (Gilles) always feel the need to do. It was YUCK on all levels.
I would have scored Team GAGnam Mess 3 7′s.
This wasn’t even close one for me. Even if my sometimes pretend boyfriend, Derek was behind the Gangnam team dance, I still would have voted for the other team. They (team call me)took dumbf**k song and made an incredibly enjoyable and technically amazing dance!
Thanks for vocalizing what a douche Gilles is…
Guys, we’re human. We make mistakes…especially when we’re burnt out bringing you guys the best coverage we can. Please keep that in mind.
And I think Vogue has a valid question here – CMM may have gotten the higher score, but I’ve heard many say they think that GS was more memorable. “Which dance was best?” is subjective – one person’s definition of what the best team freestyle is may be completely different from another’s. So I think it’s a good idea to do a poll like this to see which dance really resonated with viewers.
Now keep in mind that if I see a sudden suspicious surge in votes for a particular team, or any evidence of this post getting spammed or a fan war igniting – I’m pulling this post. I can totally see who’s tweeting the link to this poll
Don’t you dare apologize, Vogue. People are petty.
I gotta say, I absolutely loved the Gangnam style routine. Sure, it was a hot mess, but it was so much fun I was sad when it ended. The first thing I did this morning was Youtube the dance, and I’ve watched it about 10 times already this morning! Plus, I still love the song Gangnam Style, whereas I’ve gone off the Call Me Maybe song since I’ve been hearing it for what seems like nearly a year now. Yes, the GS team dance was nowhere as polished as the Call Me Maybe team dance, had the younger, more flexible and more athletic dancers and put those strengths to good use. But in terms of sheer entertainment value, fun repeat watchable and more memorable, for me it was Gangnam Style.
I think the only mistake here is the commenter’s – most people get deleted for the tone Evaine took. And I ain’t as kind as Courtney is feeling this morning. Lucky for you all I won’t be around most of the day.
((((Court and Heidi))))))XOXOXOXOX
Thanks Vogue, for reminding me about Annie Barrett. I enjoy reading her blog as well. I need some catching up to do.
I agree with you, Evaine. CMM was definitely the better dance, but I enjoyed GS more. Hate to say this, but I was kind of bored with CMM, and I like the people on that team more than the other. I think Team GS will be more memorable for its hot mess and it was a hoot! Yes, I’m guilty for liking this
The problem for team gangnam was they were so out of sync, esp. in rehersal there was no leader no coordination, no planning(at least not that we saw in the rehearsal package, and the dance)
Team Call me maybe had order, coordination, and actual teamwork/playing nice. They made sure the dance was in sync and it showed.
sloppy rehearsal=sloppy dance.
When Derek winced at being assigned Call Me Maybe, I sympathized, cause I’ve seen great you tube Gangnam choreographies-Also, the music of G is so more danceable! What Team G did not only lacked structure and proficiency, but was tasteless, vulgar and technically deficient both as a group and individually. No doubt the worst team effort ever,a 9 for THAT is shocking!Such a missed op, I would have loved to see what Derek’s champion team would have done with it-Karina, Louis and Tony are all so gifted, while the Tchermovski’s failed once again! What a pleasure it was to see the polish and perfection of Team CallMe,so flawless the stars looked like pro’s!It was a plain 30 performance, never have such talent been seen in a team-And Derek again showed he is a master among masters, Genius Invictus!
I *LOVED* CMM, the march in, the HS football/cheerleader theme, and especially the dancing!!
Also wanted to add that PureDWTS is the best site ever for fun, quirkie, realistic commentary on the show…. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!
On dance technique, transitions, creativity – hands down, team call me maybe were the best
on pure fun and entertainment- team gangnam style for me, Ive never laughed that hard watching dwts in my life
I’d call Gangnam a hot mess but I would never want Gilles to think there was anything hot about that dance.
I’ll be blunt, I can’t stand all but one couple on Team Gangnam so the answer is easily Call Me Maybe. I can only imagine what Derek et al could have done with GS. It would have been phenomenal imo. Actually, I’m pretty amazed at what he did with CMM and how the others, especially Apolo as the only mail pro, made it work almost perfectly. Like Annie said if they had been scored fairly, the chosen one would have been in possible jeopardy.
TEAMGILLES, and shame on all of you for forgetting, looked like they were making it up as they went along. Have read a few other posts saying that “gangnam”was as bad as one or two other team dances but IMHO it gets the award for worst. It was like each person was out there doing their own thing. And the pros, whom I’m embarrassed for, looked stunned at the score. They should have been..I thought 6′s maybe, but I was feelng generous at the time.
And I can’t believe I am posting this next thing…..I have always been one to say, I don’t want this show to turn into a sticky, sweet Disney-thing. The costumes though skimpy, are fine and appropriate for the dances and have lots of nude panels covering things. Sometimes really bad things are small moments and/or innuendo more than in-your-face cleavage or whatever it is that upsets viewers at times. Giles, Peta and the crotch shot ?? waaaay over the line. I was getting to know Peta w/Donald and I liked what I saw but this was “telling” for me. She should have never agreedand the camera shouldn’t have been there to catch the shot. That also tells me how desparate TPTB are getting. And all that was after it…disgusting. If I had kids or even young teens watching, they wouldda been gone from the room. I definitely have favorites, but there are reasons. It’s generally that they work hard, respect the audience and give them the most entertaining routines they can. All I cans say positive about “Gangnam” for once, Maks was right(for a minute-stop talking Gilles)and I felt badly for Emmit.
I voted for Call Me Maybe.
I actually didn’t find Gangnam Style all that fun or entertaining. For fun and entertaining, I would say check out some Freestyles of the past, like Donald & Peta’s, Shawn & Mark’s, etc.
I know, I know, I’m a grouch, but I can smile during dances that aren’t technically great (Helio’s were seldom perfect, but damn if he didn’t make me smile). Team GD just didn’t make me smile.
And I’m totally hearting Annie Barrett right now for actually making me smile.
It is like trying to compare apples to squash it just isn’t possible to compare.
I know the crotch look was sickening even more so that Peta doesn’t know to pad the drawers for camel-toe.
It is so gross when a professional doesn’t know how to prevent such vile grossness as to prevent camel-toe, how embarrassing for her that she showed her true level of class as to not prevent that from happening.
Obviously Peta has never listened to Chelsie (such a classy person) about padding the bra, the panties of the costumes to prevent such a low standard act of camel-toe.
MiMi The team you watched season 14 was DONALD’s WIFE! She was the light that lead that team. Donald has far less class than does his wife. Donald’s wife was the class you loved about Peta/Donald.
I really believe you are seeing the real Peta now as I have glanced at several of her photo ops and thought how trashy they looked and as a matter of fact thought she looks too raunchy and trashy when she dances, almost like a stripper dances not a professional “BALLROOM” dancer.
CMM was of course technically the best dance but I loved GS. It was great fun to watch from beginning to end. I was more entertained with GS and that is what a free style dance is supposed to be about, so I’ve heard. I love how the team just went for it…craziness and all. They really. nailed the vibe and feel of the song and video. I think it will be fondly remembered as one of the most fun team dances, though not the most perfect, as was CMM.
Teresa the problem with Gangnam Team was the ENTIRE dance. I agree with those who have said that even the pros looked like they were making up the dance as they went along. Choreography never entered the pros minds.
It was basically Maks, Val, Peta, Cheryl,Gilles, Kelly, Kirstie at a bar prowling about acting like S#%## and garbage.I excluded Emmett for the fact he doesn’t prowl the bars.
I felt sorry for Emmett being involved in that bar prowl crowd.
Like someone said that was tasteless and vulgar. Dancing in your underwear, that is how desperate Gilles is. But of course the horny judges gave them a 9 for that mess. I would give 6.
Mimi, I agree with you as well. I think if you go on facebook and look at posts there, you will see many people giving the same comments. I think that the pros were embarrassed by the dance – Maks wouldn’t even take credit for it when Gilles was thanking him. I don’t think any of them wanted to say they were responsible for the choreography, rightly so.
In the end, I think this is a family show and relying on “sexy” and sometime vulgar will not work. I don’t think Gilles is going to get the votes for that dance. Personally, I was disgusted with the Gangham dance, very little dancing and what little dancing was there was done poorly.
Two others have polls
USATODAY
TVLINEnews
The polls are showing the same tally CMM is running away with the votes.
I believe that mess of a dance GS will be forgotten but for the few that like junky dancing. It is a dance that DWTS should be ashamed of producing on air.
If DWTS continues down the same path of GS it will fail in ratings and be off air at the speed of light.
My only positive thought on that atrocious GAGnam Team dance was…
Maybe Gilles’ was so revolting that his shots at winning may have been dashed. Let’s face it, his behavior was just plain gross. Huge turn off if you ask me.
Ok, I agree that CMM was the best technically, but for sheer fun and get up and dance with them entertainment, GS was the best. Sheer pandemonium, but so much fun. Insanity at it’s best. There wasn’t a whole lot of dancing in the original video by PSY, so I think what Team GS put together was as good as any group could do.
Auntie Bellum, I respectfully disagree. I think any other group could have put together a better dance than that team Gangham dance, especially one that was led by Derek.
I don’t know why but I decided to watch team ego again, I only watched live. It was worst that I remember, the solos, Kelly was the only one that actually tried some dancing, but the rest it was just playing stuped, there no dancing at all, this was so lame.
No, Lisa, we certainly don’t agree, but that’s ok. We both enjoy watching DWTS. If everybody thought alike there would be no reason for this Poll.
CMM was definitely the best dance by a mile, but I think GS was more memorable and I had more “fun” watching it, even if my two favorites – Apolo and Shawn – are on the other team. It was so ridiculous, I had a smile on my face the whole time.
I personally thought the crotch shot look was funny, but I love crass, tasteless humor. Must be all that Benny Hill I watched as a kid.
Also, I vote for Peta to go with a dark haired look – she looked great with the wig, in my opinion.
SherryJ, you don’t need to be commenting on other posters. If you don’t like the “hate” in the comments, go elsewhere. We don’t have a gun to your head.
I really laughed through GS, it was fun and entertaining in a Carson way. And as I mentioned in another thread, the best score he ever got was 8 but he mostly got 6′s and some 7′s. I wish they’d made their “I love the fun” comments and then scored it more consistently, ala Carson, Joey…and if the voters loved it and it sounds like many did, let them vote for that team. I voted for Carson every week because he was so much fun.
And CMM, I think it was amazing, I agree about how great it was how they introduced the next pair, there was just so much attention to detail in that, and it was also a lot of fun to watch, so for me, it was the best team dance.
You’re right, Courtney, you don’t have a gun to my head. I knew my comment would be deleted, just couldn’t help myself. I thank you all for the hard work you do here. I hope I’ve always made that clear.
CMM was by FAR much better choreographed. The GS dance just didn’t flow well to me. I thought the Pro’s did an awesome job with the choreo for CMM. Derek just continues to hit it out of the ballpark.
Oh dear!! Just watched Team Gangnam Style. While cringing. Through my fingers! That wouldn’t be my cup of tea at all.
I’m on Team Call Me Maybe! What a dance!! Fantastic dancing and timing and slickness! You could tell they were so well rehearsed, everyone brought their bit to the table and had their moment to shine, proper teamwork. I’ll be rewatching it in years to come!
Interesting comments. All I know is, if I look away, it is a sad/strange/cringeworthy routine. I looked away a few times during Team Gangnam. Tom seemed to have a positive reaction, though. Perhaps live, it was much better. ?
I did not enjoy the GS dance at all. It was not something memorable for me, in fact, I am trying to get some icky parts of it out of my memory. It will go down for me as one of the worst dances on DWTS. On the other hand CMM was so clever and cute. Loved the choreography. There was some actual thought and practice put into the dance and there was great teamwork among the dancers. I have watched it again several times.
To quote Maks in the celebaquarium interview, “Is this a serious question?” It was fun to watch GS the first time…I kept watching it over and over and was more revolted by it every time. Just a whole new level of debacle. Val and Kelly were the only slight redemption…I didn’t think I could ever be offended by a dance, but it turned vulgar real quick. CMM did something amazing.
One thing I had on my mind is that Team GS would go “Dress classy, dance cheesy” like Psy says, but that was just cheesy-ness…
If you would have told me pre-season that we would see Gilles dancing in a diaper… I never would have believed it. It’s a first for DWTS.
CMM was the better dance by far IMO. If people remember the other routine it will probably be for the WTH?! moment they had when watching it.
CMM, of course, gets my vote. Awful song, but great choreo. I did laugh out (very) loud when Cheryl and Emmett did the horsey thing with such serious looks on their faces.
CMM is in a league of it’s own as far as team dances go. It set the standard for future seasons to try to top which will be very hard to do.
GS was pathetic and I really feel was an insult to an All Stars season and almost like a slap in the face to the other team. CMM put so much time, thought, effort and TEAMWORK into their dance in order to put out the best possible routine for the audience to enjoy and danced their hearts out to keep it as high quality as their individual routines. A complete contrast to GS, where they didn’t even give a sh*t how messy or sloppy the routine they were putting out was, didn’t even try to make it cohesive, put more time into thinking about Gilles’ towel/cloth diaper than choreo, and barely did any real dancing during their solo portions. It was like this dance was an afterthought while they worked on their individual dances and they couldn’t care less. To expect to slide through because they knew they had the better song and not put in the hard work to go with it while the other team did, they should be ashamed and embarrassed to have done that, especially on a season of All Stars where they are supposed to be elite. Melissa put more effort into her team dance with a neck injury than any of team GS put into theirs.
Team CMM made a song that I was getting sick of hearing, and made it better by turning it into a song that makes me smile when I hear it now and think of their dance. Team GS took a song I loved hearing every time it came on the radio, and has practically ruined it since I have to try to push that horrid dance out of my mind everytime it comes on.
I would love nothing more than for Team CMM to be the final 4. I sure hope one of them takes that mirrorball. No matter how this season ends up, Team CMM are all champions of this season to me.
Did anyone see the ET backstage interview where Kirstie and Maks are talking about the dance and Maks says it might be the highlight of his career? I can’t even tell if he was being sarcastic since he acted serious but I sure hope he was. LOL
Thanks for clarifying Vougerista. No need to apologize. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.
I feel a bit embarrassed to admit this but I watched CMM about 4 times in a row today. That’s how much I liked it.
Gangnam style the best. I laughed so hard I cried! CMM was technically better but IMO gangnam style will be the one that will be remembered for years. On twitter people were playing it over and over they all said it was a hot mess but they all said they were LMAO!
Yes, Diana, but are people laughing WITH Team GS, or laughing AT Team GS?
So I showed both dances to my husband last night and he was team CMM. He even asked which was the pro during Louis & Sabrina’s solo.
As for GS, he compared it to the WWE, it was “dancing entertainment” like the WWE is “sports entertainment”
I noticed a few things on this second watching: Maks & Kristie and Val & Kelly didn’t look entirely comfortable and actually had dancing in their solos. I think Emmett wasn’t totally into it either but said “beep” it and just had fun. Cheryl however has been drinking entire pitchers of the Gilles kool-aid.
Looking forward to next week
Thanks LG!
And I can’t stop watching the CMM dance too!!
Yup, I am Guilty As Charged… Repeat Offender here… I just can’t get enough of that dance. It was clever, fun, cute, and really showcased everyone…. Loved it!
I don’t think team GS were taking themselves seriously and I think,, they were absolutely in on the joke. My answer to those who’s question is whether those of us laughing at the dance were laughing with them or at them : with them, of course. They seemed to be laughing the hardest.
As far as GS being the one remembered for years… years from now GS is long going to have gone the way of the Macarena and no one will want to ever admit they used to love it or used to dance it. I doubt a horrible sloppy mess of a dance will be fondly remembered or watched much after the craze for the song is gone. CMM will probably be more like a one hit wonder song that will be a future guilty pleasure and the team dance remembered as one of the , if not the best team dance ever done on the show.
Regarding team GS being in on the joke, just sounds like another excuse for just how badly the dance was executed. It was sloppy because it was SUPPOSED to be, it looked thrown together at the last minute because that’s the way they meant for it to look! Sure. LOL
Did I miss something? Pretty sure the intent was not to imitate the original video, but actually choreograph a new dance. In that aspect, GS was a fail, CMM was not. As for GS being more entertaining?? Not in my book.
Laughing AT them, would be my guess. Lots of things are remembered for years – and that’s not always a good thing. I will remember it for years too – as the worst Team dance in DWTS history. People remember Kenny Mayne and Master P to this day as well.
I actually have more issues with the scoring than the silly dance. If they want to go against the rules (which I assume includes demonstrating your actual dancing abilities), and instead put out something that is laughably bad because they think some will find it entertaining, then go for it and be prepared for the consequences. Instead they get “9”s. In my opinion, they just made a mockery of what they were supposed to do, on the scale of Master P. Master P got “4”s; they should have as well and kept reminding themselves they were just trying to be entertaining to those who enjoy hot messes. To me, this whole thing looked thrown together by people who didn’t care. I’m sure people could write theses on why some people find something entertaining and others don’t. I think the issue here is whether they even tried to give the judges something they could objectively judge. After all this is a competition and this dance was supposed to be scored. If this was a unscored group dance, it would be a whole different story. I just got the feeling they thought they were the “cool” team that didn’t have to follow the rules and wouldn’t have to face the consequences.
@Karen, I think I agree with everything you said. I admit I laughed during Team GS, but that’s because I thought it was ridiculous.
I do get that it was a “freestyle” thought, so there weren’t any rules, really, but it was like they just threw crap at the walls to see what stuck, so it’s sort of hard for me to judge how it should have been scored. I’m very much a “by the book” person (I know, I know, it’s my fatal flaw. I’m an HR professional. I can’t help it.) But what do you do when there is no book? I get lost.
I’m so ready to get back to the actual dances and ONE night of performances Monday.
I think I agree with Karen, in some respects – and whoever it was that used Carson as a comparison. They always said Carson’s dancing was not great but loved how entertaining he was. And people will always remember some of his dances. Yet he never got anywhere close to a 9. I will never get how the judges can say that the dancing was a “hot mess” and still give them that score. In the same night, Shawn’s rumba was beautiful, yet Len gives her an 8. So much for credibility. They gave that piece of shit dance the same score they gave Apolo and Melissa.
And the judges wonder why people boo them??
Vote for CMM! Since I am so ignorant of current pop stuff I looked up Gangnam at Wikipedia to find out what the rest of you know all about. New to me: K-POP (Korean) came from the Beverly Hills District of Seoul, South Korea. Since July 15, 2012, this “dance” has swept the world. The Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon,danced it, said it is a force for world peace and Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google has danced it. There are over 200 citations at the end of a long history of the short life of this imitation horse gait through things people do everywhere. Must be something there that I am not appreciating in this “HALLYU culture wave from South Korea”. PSY said “it is to dress classy and dance cheesy and make people laugh in global economic slowdowns”. Laughing when I can barely make my house note not a help. Annie B said it very well! Formerly classy Gilles threw out his credibility with his gross vulgar behavior for me Tuesday. The rest of the team just seemed to do a “whatever the hell” dance to get it over with. Maybe fun to dress up n dance cheesy but force for world peace??????? Shawn and Derek’s dance had the heart of real peace. sorry if I state the obvious or irrelevant…
Team CMM had a professional, smart, slick, fun, classy, cute, clever and beautfully performed routine. I loved it! Team Ego had the worst, imo, team dance in the history of dwts. A hot train wreck mess. I was embarrassed for this team, and appalled. Peta’s crotch shot was raunchy and I couldn’t believe it. I mean its one thing to have a dancer do a split in the air, its another thing for the camera to zoom in on a crotch shot. On a family show. no less? It was shameful. TPTB really hit a low point on this one.

oops, sorry, posted twice by mistake
