In my opinion, Dancing with the Stars is one of, if not the best show on television, but I will be happy when the regular DWTS returns next season. Too many crazy themes and dances on this season.
Love the photo of Shawn & Derek! I hope DWTS wins!!
I hope they win but The voice will probably win.
I’m so tired of singing shows right now. I used to love watching Idol, but now with the voice twice a year, x factor and some other random singing shows on other channel, I’m getting really tired to listing to the same songs been butcher in different shows, just this week “my heart will go on” was sang on the voice and x factor. How many times do I have to listin to “i have nothing”, “hero “, I don;t wanna miss a thing, the way you are , and so many others. BORING
DWTS probably spent more money for season 15 but the ratings are disappointing. After this season’s failure, my guess is, they’re going to change a lot of things for season 16. DWTS is not going to be cancelled anytime soon, but at 1.9 for 18-49 demo, they can’t afford any more big names.
Dwts ratings were never great, the show is still the most watched show, still has more viewer than the voice and way more than X factor. Tv in general is in a bad place right now, everything is down, not just dwts.
If they do anything it would be cut back to one season a year instead of two.
This is probably a stupid question…but what’s the difference between “ratings” and viewers? Like, what exactly does “1.9 for 18-49 demo” mean? (I get demo is demographic, but 1.9?)
I think there will be changes for next year with DWTS. Maybe Paula Abdul as a judge? She is performing there on Tuesday and said there will be some announcement made? I now think something needs to happen with the judges. Their scoring this season has been the worst I ever seen. I personally know quite a few who this year went with “The Voice” rather than DWTS and try as I may I could not get them back to watch DWTS. Even some with DVRs were just burnt out with it. Also, some people seem to have a fascination with Blake Shelton right now. Man he don’t do it for me, but, to each his own I guess.
:)
Paula Abdul? Gawd, I hope not. The 3 stooges are bad enough, we don’t need a fourth stooge.
The ratings measure total viewers, which DWTS is regularly in the top 5. The ratings also measure the most desireable demographic which is 18-49 year olds, which DWTS is usually in the Top 20. NEITHER of these things have changed in years. The total number of viewers is down – but ALL SHOWS ARE DOWN.
I do wish people would quit coming in here regurgitating stupid media outlets and start actually looking at the numbers and thinking about it.
As for changes to the show? Name two seasons in a row that were exactly the same. Every single year they tinker with it in some way. Instant dances, trio dances…the list goes on and on.
Thanks Heidi! I just got slightly confused since TV shows that aren’t reality shows usually get two “ratings”: critic ratings and viewer numbers. I didn’t know if DWTS had that too.
Sara, “1.9 for 18-49 demo” means, 1.9 percentage of the total TV viewers aged 18-49. Right now, it equals to about two and a half million people. The remaining 10 million DWTS viewers are mostly 50+ year old people, while some of them are younger than 18. I’m not an expert about ratings, but people say advertisers care about the 18-49 demo. An advertiser would prefer The Voice’s 11 million viewers, or X Factor’s 7-8 million viewers instead of DWTS’s 13 million viewers, because DWTS is barely getting 2.0 rating for performance shows, the result ratings are lower.
No problem, Sara. I don’t pay attention to critics, so I don’t know much about that. I’m a numbers person.
Nothing new, LittleGirl – really we’ve had this discussion ad nauseum. People trying to claim the sky is falling and everything is going to hell, when DWTS is still in top 5 or 10 (it’s never won against football) and it still sucks in the demo.
I’m not referencing any media outlets in my post, it’s my own observation. I always check ratings of the shows I watch. I’m not an expert but I have enough knowledge to understand things. The numbers are simple; season 13 premiere 4.0 rating, season 14 premiere 3.5 rating, season 15 premiere 2.5 rating, the numbers are for 18-49 demo.
Even if all shows are down, it doesn’t make DWTS ratings tolerable. The advertisers would find new places to sell their products, which means less money DWTS earns, thus DWTS can’t afford a famous celebrity and maybe not even the famous professionals. At this point, DWTS producers can’t be satisfied with a 2.0 rating. They’ll probably try new things to boost the ratings. Otherwise, ABC will cancel DWTS in 1-2 years when ratings hit 1.3-1.5 low, and ABC will try a new show hoping it’ll get higher ratings. Let’s say all shows are down and 1.3-1.5, then maybe TV stations will disappear, but there is no way a low rated show can survive.
The rest is all imaginary numbers but have a look to understand what I mean:
DWTS used to spend 3 million dollars per episode and earn 15 million dollars per episode when they get 4.0 rating. They wanted higher ratings, they did an all star season, it cost them 5 million dollars per episode, but now they’re earning 8 million dollars per episode. Still affordable, but it’s very risky to renew DWTS for ABC.
I don’t know why you mention a discussion Heidi. I’m not discussing anything, I was answering Sara’s question. We’ll see what happens next spring.
I didn’t see “awaiting moderation” warning, I thought I couldn’t hit send button. If I sent the message more than once, you can delete the other one.
I actually am enjoying the new twists this season. That’s probably because we are seeing some exciting dancing come from the new dance fusions.
*coming in to see this picture again. Check out how Derek and Shawn’s fingers are even the same. Just stunning!
Was the show nominated last year for this award?
LOL Vogue! I thought the same thing about Shawn & Derek’s hands in that beautiful picture. These two are so in sync with each other. Their dances are mesmerizing to watch. Do we know what Latin dance they are doing to MJ? I am really hoping they will do the Argentine Tango. WHEN they are in the finals and repeat a dance they’ve done during the season, I hope they do the Paso-Tango fusion since Derek was injured that week. I really want to see him dance that number; but knowing Derek, he’ll put his own dancing flair on the piece. Can’t wait; but also there’s a little sadness if this is indeed his swan song! Have to stop thinking about that because I start to cry!
This conversation comes up so many times its annoying. Yes the numbers are down, yes the younger age group is watching the voice, etc, etc…here’s the thing…DWTS is not going to be on the tv forever…they are going into their 16 season- thats alot of dancing! I think with Derek leaving, Cheryl taking a break, Maks leaving in a few more seasons…the writing is on the wall. Yes it will be nice to see new blood from the troupe but i think the show is what it is because of the pros to be honest. Maks also made a reference that he thinks alot of pros will be done when their contracts are up…they probably know that nothing lasts forever and after 10 years or so, that was a good ride.
Exactly Linz!
xx
Nice try, LittleGirl, but I still think you’re missing the larger point in the over all picture. But since we’ve talked about this before (you do realize this site existed long before you showed up), I’m not going over it again.
It won’t be going anywhere for a while, joey. There are WAY more shows on TV than those in the top 20 in the demo. They’ll have to crash hard the next two seasons before the get the ax.
most of us didn’t know any of these pros before they showed up on DWTS, and we grew to love them (or hate them) and became fans (or not). I will be sorry to see some leave, glad to see others depart, meh about the rest. There’s no reason to think that the new pros, from the troupe or not, won’t have a similar arc. I already love Tristan, would like to see Damien back (fat chance of that, i know), i’m very interested to see what Sasha, Henry and Sharna can bring to the table. No ….. if this show goes down, it won’t be because current pros are leaving
Now …. screwing around with the format and heavy handed story boarding by TPTB, that’s another story LOL
I can’t believe I started a “is DWTS going to be cancelled?” talk on a positive post like this. DWTS fans, I was just writing the current situation and predicting producers are going to change some things about the show. Just a little reality check by me, but that’s it, DWTS is still a strong show. Don’t forget that even the pessimist experts agree that there will be at least season 16, 17 and 18. Nothing to worry about right now. Enjoy the People’s Choice award nomination.
Princess Heidi, as I always say I’m not a TV or ratings expert. It’s my own observation, as I prefer to be a realist. Just hoping producers don’t go extreme to boost the ratings, I really don’t want to see a totally different season 16. But as a realist, even I have to say that DWTS fans need to calm down, DWTS is not going anywhere. Although 1.9-2.1 is considered low, ABC can’t ignore 13 million viewers.
I also, saw the lovely pic and Shawn and Derek look lovely. She really has grown so much as a dancer since her original season.
Laila, I agree with you. I don’t watch Voice or American Idol but I watch X Factor US and it’s getting boring with all those “oh-so-powerful” songs. I know it’s important for the contestants to show how powerful their voices are, with all those high notes etc. But I wish they could make it more interesting, like maybe sing 40s 50s songs and not just powerful songs but also the songs from Andrews Sisters, Supremes, Ray Charles(Hit the Road Jack for example) etc. Lol, I know it probably sounds silly but I’d love to hear Diamond or Vino or Tate singing those songs
. This is a weird idea. I know.
Maybe changing the judges will boost the ratings of DWTS. Or making the show more about the stars than about the pros.
You actually believe the show makes it about the pros and not the celebs, Eagle?? We must be watching two different shows. Maybe if the made it about the pros more their ratings would go up. Half the time, they are more famous than the “celebs”.
LOL, the reason I started watching DWTS was because I got sick of all the singing shows. I think that’s also why I like “[insert country here]‘s Got Talent” shows. Because there’s variety and some really unique talents.
Princess Heidi, I think the pros have to be in the background a little bit more. Of course it probably wouldn’t boost the ratings. I just thought of it for a second and wrote it. Because I don’t like pros shadowing their partners. I wasn’t even so serious about it when I clicked “submit” so it’s not a big deal, ok?
