Read more below on what took place yesterday and how you can help. Watch the video too as it’s so touching! Thanks to Cynthia for sending….
On Wednesday December 12, 2012 at 12 minutes and 12 seconds past 12 Noon, under the arch at NYC Washington Square Park, Tony Dovolani was joined by a Flash Mob of dancers including, Professional Ballroom and Latin dancers and 12,12,12 (36) school Children from BALLROOM Basix, a not-for-profit, arts-in-education initiative that brings the etiquette and education of partner dancing to the schools to deter bullying and enhance peer relationships. Many of the students and their families in the BALLROOM Basix program have suffered damage to their homes and displacement, in one of the hardest hit areas, Rockaway, where BALLROOM Basix serves over 120 students in PS 114.
The Flash mob, which swelled to around 200 people, was lead by Tony Dovolani, “Dancing with the Stars: All Star” Season Champion and Iveta Lukosiute (2008 & 2009 World 10 Dance Champion) from So You Think You Can Dance. Rhumba for Relief was danced to the Contemporary English/Spanish version of America, The Beautiful, featuring Grammy nominated Karina Pasian. The song is available for download on iTunes for $1.00 HERE. Rhumba for RELIEF contributions will be distributed by The Fund for New York with profits to benefit Rockaway Relief. Please help us spread the word.
Thank you to Tony and Iveta fr thjeir artistry and professionalism. Collaborating with them on the this important project was delightful! Over 120 of our Ballrom Basix studetns were displaced by Hurricane Sandy. These are children who we transform through the non-competitive connection with their classmates through ballroom and latin dancing. The first dance our kids learn is merengue. So we created an original English Spanish version of AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL (with Grammy-nominated singer Karina Pasian) to celebrate the etiquette and education we bring to these schoolchildren with respectful, partnered movement. Now we’re using this inspiring song to help our Rockaway kids — so dozens of our Harlem students pulled together with Tony and Iveta on 12/12/12 at 12:12:12 to draw attention to the $1 download. Please tell all your friends and families to support this meaningful project.
