Aly Raisman Is Excited Because Dancing With The Stars Will Be A Challenge
Aly Raisman tells Boston.com she “clicked” right away with her partner Mark Ballas when they first met this past Sunday. She already feels close to him and the whole cast of Dancing With The Stars. She also talks of her dancing skills. Below is more in detail…
Q. How familiar are you with the rest of the cast?
A. I have met everyone, and it is an awesome cast. I already feel so close to so many people and I have been in contact with a bunch of the cast members since we first met on Sunday. We will keep in touch while I am in Boston and everyone else is spread out around the country practicing. I love meeting new people!
Q. How would you describe your dancing skills?
A. I honestly have no idea how to characterize my dance skills. All I know is that I am going to need a lot of help, because it is actually completely different than gymnastics. I have never tried any of the dances that I will do on the show, so it will definitely be a challenge, but that is why I am so excited. I love working hard and trying new things. When I am with my friends I love to dance and be crazy, but I don’t think about technique. It’s going to be so much fun!

She’s going to be a “go-getter”, isn’t she? To read the full interview, go to Boston.com.

I’m looking forward to seeing Aly and Mark. I have no doubt she’ll be able to dance. For me it’s just a question of whether or not she can lose the dead-pan look and inward focus and engage the audience. She’s very pretty when she smiles.
Couldn’t agree more!! Right now there is something about her that I’m having trouble connecting to, but, we’ll see.
Vogue, Do you remember Aly’s parents at the Olympics? While Aly was doing her routines, they were doing the moves in their seats to “help her along”! They got quite a bit of coverage from the media about it. Now, will they be in the audience at DWTS doing the same thing???? LOL
Oh no…that’s hilarious!!!!!! lolll
Yipes! Hilarious but embarrassing!
They should totally do the same thing! lol
I’m having a hard time really connecting with Aly so far – she’s unfortunately bringing back memories of Shawn in season 8, who I found to be rather timid, shy, quiet, and not always very interesting to watch. Maybe it’s a gymnastics “poker face” thing.
Here is a video of Aly’s parents during one of her routines. Can’t wait to see them during one of her dances!
LOL. Too funny. Thanks for posting! I bet they move around in a similar way on DWTS. I just hope they remove the people around them when it’s time for Mark and Aly’s Paso Doble.
LOL V! Could be dangerous to sit near them for the Paso. But then I thought of the Argentine Tango with the lifts! Stick it! Hope they give them their own section!
In one of the interviews, Aly said that letting go is the one thing she wants to accomplish on the show. I believe she has one of the best pros to help her do that. I’d never underestimate Mark.
@Katarina
I really hope he manages but frankly, Aly seems like a very tough nut to break. We’ll see.
Her parents sure are CRAZY.
I wonder about being able to connect to her as well, when she talked of wanting to see her sassy side the word that popped into my brain was irony. But I think she was probably nervous. And I think if she does have a silly side with her friends, Mark will be able to tap into it.
After watching the clip of her parents – TY, Linz – Aly’s stated goal for herself seems even more acute and pressing.
Mark’s experience with Shaun should help them both, and maybe even Aly’s familiarity with Shaun’s evolution in S15. Could be very interesting if Aly can learn to “let go”, as she’s obviously got physical ability, work ethic, performance experience on her side. But yeah, Sasa, Mark will have his hands full with someone who’s competed so long and intensively in the gymnast “no emotion” mode.
True. Mark has won every time he’s had an Olympian.
Win number three with his third Olympian?? We’ll see.
LOL at the video of Aly’s parents! I remember watching that live and I died laughing. Can’t wait to see them too in the audience. Thanks Linz.
Unless Aly comes out dancing like gavin degraw, carson kressley, bristol palin etc. then i dont think it will be win number three for him. Ive heard from different videos posted other castmates saying that they think shes the one to beat and is it just because she a olympic gymnast, young, athlectic not sure.
Another Olympian yes, but I’m not willing to hand Mark his 3rd MBT just yet. Yes, he won with his 2 previous Olympians, but that was a while ago. Not only has Mark changed, but so has the show. Neither of last season’s all-star Olympians won, but I don’t know if that’s a fair comparison.
Agree that it’s way too early to hand Mark his 3rd MBT. Like many others here, I’m having a hard time connecting with Aly (hoping that will change). Even if she can dance reasonably well, if she can’t connect with the audience she won’t make it to the final, not with the huge personalities she’s up against this season (IMHO, of course). If Wy, Kellie and Jacoby can dance ….. and Andy is bound to garner a lot of come back kid/support your journey votes – at least initially, and if he’s also got some moves ….. while Dorothy strikes me as a little timid as well, I think she’s got age and experience on her side. Aly will definitely have hard to bring her personality to the dance floor. She is an Olympian, so she’s got drive and a strong work ethic; she’s used to working with a coach and working hard. While that can be a big plus, it can also work against her – by focusing too much on the athletics/technique we might get robotic unemotional unconnected dancing. Mark is the perfect partner for her, I do think. He does well with a capable partner, as I believe Aly can be.
I think it will go one of two ways – either people will be more inclined to vote for her after what happened to Shawn (which I kinda doubt because you don’t get a partnership like Shawn/Derek all the time) or they will remember last season as Shawn winning and will say “not again!”. Or a third possibility is just a :::yawn:::
I kinda can’t believe they went back to that well so soon. I guess we’ll soon see whether it was too soon or not.
Very interesting reactions to Aly R which confirmed my far from informed gut feeling. She turned me off-no reason to put my finger on. There will be no TV or streaming for me this season so my opinion very little consequence. No matter what Dorothy Hammil does I would love it since YES I did watch her win when I was a young mother. DWTS TPTB has not fixed the show. If I had a TV or unlimited streaming I would watch it anyway, because next to ice skating which I can do old as I am, Dance is the greatest thing we can do short of love for the planet and its inhabitants. To me “fixing” would include guest spots by icons ie. Bruce Willis’ tango (always watching his Tango in SUNSET-esp. the uncut steamy version. I like the crazy cantankerous mix of judges bias and all (they are there per TPTB whims-but ADD SCORE CARDS WE CAN BE PRIVY TO for objectivity. Those judges have all proved their dance skills and business acumen, they kI really did appreciate the Halloween thing being skippnow performance. I fear Lynn as some health problems and TPTB grant him some mercy. I like the idea of keeping every -mostly- til finals. The drama can go on but I never watched because of it but in spite of it. And I would like to see some classics re danced such as Karina’s Dark Waltz and Derek/Shawn Titanic routine but longer and more music by Derek and Mark, violin by Valentin. Good to skip the Halloween theme, but like the theme weeks as in Gladys Knight tenure, and tribute to the troops. Parting comments-love you triple threat gals: brains and heart! Maybe I will get to watch again on a friend’s set but bye for now.
