DWTS Season 16 – Derek and Kellie on Access Hollywood
Kellie is HILARIOUS. Hope she can dance.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
She’s adorable and it’s rubbing off on Derek too.
I LOVE how Derek has an accent that comes out around her. So funny!
OMG she is too cute!!! I’m thinking Derek will getting into a little southern drawl.
So, so happy Kellie’s partnered with Derek…. Not only is she adorable, beautiful, & gorgeous, but she’s also totally hilarious!!!! She’s such a sweetheart & I love her dearly…. In some ways, she kind of reminds me of Julianne…. Just saying….
You nust watch this clip!Kelly has that that easy down home Southern amiability and Derek?…well, he’s a ham! Oozes All-American charm from every pore,as he speaks! If it’s so pleasurable to watch them chat, can u imagine how hypnotizing to watch them dance?Whooppee!
You know what’s funny? I thought it was hilarious when Mark’s British accent resurfaced when dancing with Katherine Jenkins. And now Derek has developed a Southern accent. And it is FUNNY!!! In a good way of course. I know that can happen too. When I took a trip to see some friends in the midwest, I came back to the Northwest with a Midwestern accent that I couldn’t shake off for weeks! LOL.
Anyway, I really like Kellie and hope they are great. This season definitely seems to have a bunch of likable stars so we’ll see what happens, but go on now and PICKHOUGH the competition, ya hear?
BTW, I am terrible at noticing these things but did Derek get a haircut or is it just styled differently?
Just thought how Derek’s been compared to Gene Kelly & how awesome that there’s now a Kelly-Hough dance connection!Swell! They should name their team Kelly-Hough in honor of Gene!
Haircut, Nathan.
Ok, wasn’t sure. LOL Thanks, PH!
They’re too cute! I’m hoping her stint as a high school cheerleader helps her on the dance floor.
Interesting fact I learned the other day: the reason we tend to adopt the accent of people we are around is because we’re subconsciously trying to empathize with them and make them feel welcome in our social circle. Explains why Mark adopted an English accent with Katherine and why Derek has a southern accent around Kelly
@Nathan – Midwestern accent, huh? You mean you actually found one?
I’ve been told by my mom’s relatives overseas and my dad’s relatives down south that the Midwestern accent is pretty “flat” – as in there’s not much about it that’s very distinguishing or particularly unique, unlike the drawl of the southern accent, the sharpness of the New York & Boston accents, and the “hokieness” of the Chicago/Wisconsin/Minnesota accent. I tend to notice the Midwestern accent has less to do with how we pronounce things and more to do with sentence structure – one bad habit a lot of Hoosiers seem to have is ending sentences with prepositions (“Where would you like me to send that to?” or “Who did you go to the dance with?” or “What is that book about?”). I catch myself doing it from time to time and have tried to be better about it. We also seem to use the word “anymore” to mean “nowadays”, instead of “no longer” (“Anymore, I don’t really worry about those things”).
Doesn’t hurt that Mark (and Derek) grew up in London and Mark’s mom is a Brit. It’s interesting that you rarely hear Derek leak a Brit accent – he claims he never picked it up, which is weird. He was there for 8 or 9 years.
The southern accent is killing me. Wonder if Tony has one now too – although I don’t think Wynonna’s accent is as strong as Kellie’s. Kellie’s is much stronger than what you typically hear around Nashville.
Where were you, Nathan, because Court is right. The midwest doesn’t really have a distinguishable accent. They have a lack of one which is why most news anchors strive for it, especially in the bigger cities. I’ve found that people on either coast call everything “in the middle” the midwest, when that’s not really accurate. Kinda like the southerners calling me a “yankee” when I’m from Ohio. Um…no.
Now, Wisconsin/Minnesota – THAT’s an accent!!
Lol. I was in I’d Illinois just near the Indiana border. I had noticed an almost ‘Southern’ like accent but it was light. My friends had this tone to them that I wish I could accurately describe. But yes, PH, when I visited Chicago, there was not an accent to be found. They are very prim and proper when speaking. Gee, how can I put it? Missouri= Missoura is the best example I can think of. But it definitely wssn’t southern but Southern like, I guess. Does that make sense?
@Nathan – There are parts of Indiana that have almost a lighter, slight southern-type drawl…I find those to be in more rural areas, or down along the Indiana-Kentucky border. Kankakee is what I would call a more “rural” area, so that could explain what you heard. For the most part, though, the average person you run into in the greater Indianapolis area has very little accenting or unique intonation to their speech. A roommate of mine in college was a speech pathology major, and I remember her saying that the English spoken in Indiana & Ohio (and parts of southern Michigan) was about the closest thing to “proper” English pronunciation we have in the US. In other words – we’re boring
@PH – Kellie’s accent is probably stronger because she’s originally from Albemarle, North Carolina…and for lack of a better term, let’s just call that “a very rural, outlying area”
Thick, heavily drawled accents – definitely stronger than Nashville, and even stronger than more metro NC (mainly the Raleigh-Durham area). Not quite as syrupy as the Charleston, SC accent, but definitely not as muted as the Nashville accent. Very…”country”.
Yes, Kankakee definitely was rural and I mostly stayed there. That is interesting for sure! Thanks for that. Boring?!? Nah, I had the time of my life there, lol!! Highly recommend Dixie Kitchen in Lansing, IL. Home of the best Long Island Tea I have ever had!!!
Ok, how did I get to this point from accents to drinks? Oh boy
Kellie & Derek are to cute together!! She is one hilarious young lady with such a big heart! I’ve watched several of her interviews with Ellen D.-had me cracking up! I have a feeling she will be a pleasant surprise on the dance floor too!! Y’all get ready to laugh-hee haw!!-lol
does anyone know what kellie and derek’s first dance is?
I LOVE Kellie’s accent! I really think this show needs more southern folk on it cause I love a good southern accent.:P And since we’re playing the ” Tell there you live and how people talk there ” game, I live near Jackson, Mississippi, and let me tell you, if you wanna hear some truely THICK southern drawl?? Come here.
I definiely have one to an extent and I if get around friends with particularly thick accents mine gets thicker too. For the reasons Courtney said above I guess. Seriously though, I know people who can turn ” crap ” into a four syllable word.
Kellie is a hoot and she’s bringing out Derek’s goofy streak, which is always fun. Yeah, he’s definitely starting to drawl…too cute. And may I just say I love it when Derek wears black.
Great discussion on accents. I’ve moved around a lot, and it doesn’t take long before I’m talking “like a native”. My husband thinks it’s funny. It never seems to happen to him.
@Heidi:
If the joke about Derek and Kellie having the same haircut wasn’t around before, then it’s certainly going to be the case now that Derek has gone and gotten his shortened… Now watch them growing it out in tandem.
Kelly is too funny. I love them together!!!! LOL to what she said about falling!!!
I saw someone on twitter say their first dance is Cha Cha Cha but not sure if it’s true.
I just saw their official picture (people.com posted all of them) and it looks gorgeous – I think it’s my favourite of the bunch.
Vogue,
The falling comment was hilarious-Derek has his hands full-she’s gonna have him cracking up..
Loving their promo picture-Can’t wait to see them dance..
I love them both!
Derek always manages to make some amazing chemistry with his partners, and he doesn’t disappoint with Kellie. It makes me really excited for these two, actually. I have no worries about her ability, because Derek will definitely bring it out of her ten fold.
I give Derek props. Does he have other interests. Yes. But he never seems to be going through the motions. he’ll give it his all, whomever the partner.
Kellie can get that great natural, easy laugh out of him on what was this, day 2?? It oughtta be good. HAHA !! Really hope she can dance so they’ll stick around a loooong time. I have no doubt if she practices enough and listens to him, with some gymnastics and cheerleading background and she has great lines…Derek will be able to do PLENTY with that. Fingers crossed…CUTE, FUN team. Love them.
