Andy Dick On DWTS: “I want to let America to see the real me and rediscover it for myself”
Andy Dick tells XFinity he is so excited to dance on Dancing With The Stars this season. He also talks of why he decided to dance and what helped him to defeat drinking. He also says he has the best partner in Sharna Burgess….she will be his “strength”. His kids will also be in the audience to help support him every week. Lots more at the link and below. Another great interview!!
What other skills will you bring to “DWTS”?
My strength in the dancing category is literally Sharna. Sharna is an amazing dancer and also, she’s one of the choreographers on the show and so, I know the man is supposed to lead in the dancing, but right now I’m leaning all on her!How would you describe the controversies in your life?
Horrible. That’s just not me. I want to let America to see the real me — and rediscover it for myself. What changed in your life the past couple of years that made you ready for this?
I don’t know, but I do know I’ve been struggling ever since I picked up a drink and then life got super hard in my 20s, especially my late 20s, when a lot of my friends started dying and then my go-to thing was alcohol. It’s either you keep drinking and die, or you stop, and I’ve been stopping over and over and over for awhile, and I’m done with that. I’m 47 years old; pardon the expression, but it’s time to crap or get off the pot. Let’s do this. Are you concerned about the physical challenges of “DWTS”?
That’s why I have Sharna. Sharna keeps saying, “Balance, Andy, balance,” and they don’t let us rehearse for more than five hours during the first week, which is great, because I’m very excessive. It came into play when I was drinking, and now I don’t want to overdo it and rip something because then you’re out of the game. You can’t do any waltz with crutches. Have they done that? Will your kids be in your rooting section?
I have a 24-year-old son, an 18-year-old son, and a 15-year-old daughter. They will be there for every show. We’re very close!

These different interviews with Andy are giving me a really positive impression – I’m looking forward to seeing his journey on the show.
Bless him! He really does seem to be committed to getting his act together — better late than never, I say!
From the pics we’ve seen, I’m not sure he’ll be much of a dancer, which means he won’t get too far. I just hope the audience gives him a chance to (as he said) show who he really is without the alcohol. It seems like a lot of viewers are unable to let go of their preconceived notions.
I admit, I pre-judged him, and now I’m having to rethink my position.
Well said, Guys!! I just love him and his story too.
I pray that his opening night package will showcase this wondeful side of Andy for all of America to see.
Of all the couples, I think it’s Andy and Sharna that I am most excited to see. I love this couple.
I can’t believe that I went from cringing and repulsed upon first hearing he was cast, to now actively rooting for him to succeed and open to even voting for him! My knee jerk reaction was that he would treat it as a joke, be unpredictable and inappropriate towards his partner and during the live show, and just generally be a mess and embarrassing. From everything I’m seeing and reading about him, I was wrong and I am happy to be wrong. I’d love for this show to be a life changing experience for him, for the better.
Meant to also add… stories like his where he seems to truly want to learn to dance and use the show as a positive experience, are the kinds of stories I love about this show. These are the types of buzz generating castings I’d like to see more of rather than the ones like Kate Gosselin who doesn’t even try and really gets nothing out of the experience.
I’m really glad that Andy has been working hard to get his act together. Can’t wait to see him on this new season of DWTS. I don’t think he’ll be the best dancer, but he will definitely be a lot of fun to watch.
I agree with Jenn – Andy isn’t doing it for publicity, he’s doing it because he needs to challenge himself in his life right now. I think that’s a *great* reason for doing the show, and I hope he can stick around long enough to meet his goals.
So excited for this couple. As I’ve mentioned in a couple other posts, I have a soft spot for the sober Andy Dick – and smiling that others are open to giving him a chance. I imagine this is a pretty big step in his recovery, it sounds like he’s surrounding himself with good people and his family and I wish him the best on his journey!
Sure hope he reads this page..I glanced at the abc dwts pages a few days ago, and not much positive over there regarding him.
