DWTS 16 Preliminary Power Rankings – Part I

So it’s time once again for me to gaze into my crystal ball before the premiere and try to take a wild (but educated) guess at how things are gonna pan out this season – who’s gonna be good, who’s gonna be bad, who’s gonna stick around, and who might get sent packing early.  Admittedly, this kind of snuck up on me – after my prolonged hiatus after season 15, season 16 seems to have arrived at breakneck speed and I’m just struggling to keep up.  Guess that’s what happens when one bad season turns you off of a show completely…don’t know that I’ve been this dubious about a new season of my favorite show since season 5 of Nip/Tuck 😯

For those just tuning in, a few words of explanation about how I arrive at these rankings.  It’s a combination of factors – how good (or bad) of a dancer I think they’ll be, how much of a fanbase I think they do or don’t have, how likeable/unlikeable I think they’ll be to viewers.  So all those factors considered – this is how I predict the eliminations to shake out.  And they can (and usually do) change after seeing the first episode 😛 So in today’s edition, I tackle the bottom half of the couples: the ones I don’t see lasting past the middle of the competition.  Here we go…

12.) Lisa & Gleb – It pains me to say this, considering that they’re my favorite couple, but I’m afraid my favorite Real Housewife of Beverly Hills may be the first on the chopping block this season 🙁 There seems to be several factors working against them – and the one that concerns me the most is the fact that Lisa’s a reality star, and she’s a Real Housewife at that.  Considering that TPTB have avoided casting from that franchise like the plague until now, and that the Housewives seem to be some of the more maligned reality tv stars amongst DWTS fans (some DWTS fans reeeeeallllly don’t like Housewives – trust me, I’ve gotten tweets complaining, as if I have any control over casting!), I’m worried that some viewers have already written her off, sight unseen.  Then again, I could be completely wrong – since we have no precedent for a Real Housewife on DWTS, how do I know that RHOBH fans won’t tune in and vote in droves for our British lass? 🙂  They’re also contending with the fact that Gleb is a brand new pro without much of a fanbase (and without the benefit of being visible to the DWTS viewers already, a la Sharna in the troupe or Lindsay on SYTYCD) – although I daresay Gleb’s stunning good looks certainly don’t seem to be hurting them 😉 Besides those two hurdles, I also worry that they’re just too laid back – their rehearsals are neither memorably good nor memorably bad, which could make them blend into the woodwork amongst some of the bigger personalities this season.  And we don’t really have any idea what Lisa’s dancing prowess is like, nor do we know what Gleb’s teaching/choreographing prowess is like – they could be really good, they could be really bad, they could just “be”.  I’m hoping that we’re in for a pleasant surprise with these two, but my gut’s telling me that they’re probably not going to make it past the first few weeks of the season. Kym Johnson And Ingo Rademacher: Fun In The Hawaiian Sun, But, Rehearsing Hard For Dancing With The Stars

KimIngo

Isn’t this a pretty shot of Kym Johnson and Ingo Rademacher? Every time they tweet or post pics like this at facebook, they take my breath away and, what’s more, it seals them further as being one of my favorite couples going into this competition! How about you?

As you know from previous posts, the two have been in Hawaii all this past week so Ingo could take part in his paddling duties, but, as you can see the two have been rehearsing non-stop for Dancing With The Stars as well.

Also, if you’d like to see some high quality pics of Kym on the beach soaking up the sun, visit the Daily Mail. They are breathtakng shots as well.

DWTS16 Andy Dick And Sharna Burgess Interviewed About Dancing And Rehearsing

Andy Dick tells the ladies at The View that now is the right time to dance. It wasn’t the right time before because they didn’t call it “Drinking With The Stars” or “Dancing With The Drunks” when they first asked him to dance. If they did, he would have won. LOL But, Andy is serious about being in a good place now. Sharna was in the audience and she confirms how ready Andy is to dance. They also show some past footage of him tap dancing which he makes fun of (hey, he’s pretty quick!). More in the video below and great interview again, but, why did they have Sharna sitting in the audience? She should have been sitting with the group too.

Below is Sharna and Dick talking wtih TV Guide as well. I love how much heart they have. Dick says this show has been the most rehabilitating for him of everything. You can also read more on the three new Pros including Sharna at the link of the video.

She can’t wait for people to see her dance and see a whole other side of her personality. She loves having Mark Ballas for a partner as well. They plan to do a split type move on Monday night during their dance, but, she will save any flipping for later. She’s also seen Sean and Peta dance and she says their dance for Monday is good. She also says she is worried about Jacoby Jones being a force in this competition. Lots more below including her thoughts about her parents and how much they mean to her. Thanks to @kupskik at twitter for sending us this interview.

Victor Ortiz and Lisa Vanderpump Make Some Dancing With The Stars Press Rounds

Celeb contestants Victor Ortiz and Lisa Vanderpump made some press rounds today to talk about dancing and Dancing With The Stars. Below they talk with ABC15. Victor says it’s anyone’s ballgame for who can win Dancing With The Stars Season 16. Lisa says she’s taking it all one week at a time. Dancing is much harder than they both thought it would be. Also, you can take part and read a chat HERE too with them if interested today.

UPDATE: Here is Victor on Access Hollywood sharing a story of triumph over tragedy….

UPDATE2: Xfinity also interviewed Lisa and Victor. Below is a little take about their first dances. Be sure to see the link for more.

I know you can’t reveal too much, but can you give us any clues about your first dances?
Lisa: Well, hopefully, I just want to get through it. My dance — I can’t say what it is but it’s so kind of foreign to what I would normally do, if that gives you a clue. It’s obviously not something contemporary. That’s been quite challenging, to adopt the positions you need to know [sighs]. If I can get through it and memorize it, that will really be enough for me. I’ll be thrilled with that.
Victor: Absolutely. On my end, a little clue is, I’m very loose. [Laughs]
Lisa: What part of your body is loose?
Victor: [Cryptically] You know. Whenever you’ve gotta move! You have to keep loose up top and I’m a very tense person. It’s very rough.

Sean Lowe And Peta Murgatroyd Talk of Their Chemistry And New Dance Move (Rehearsal Video)

They also talk of how they are creating their own dance move. Lots more below. Also, if you haven’t seen Peta and Sean’s first rehearsals photos, be sure to see them at Getty Images. Jacoby Jones And Karina Smirnoff Will Cha Cha To A Youthful Hit, Talk About DWTS Rehearsals

The Baltimore Sun has a fun article up today with Karina Smirnoff and Jacoby Jones where they talk about their rehearsals. The beginning of the article is too funny. I love Karina’s sense of humor.

In a bit of an ego blow to Ravens fans, Karina Smirnoff, a dancing professional who knows all about the cha-cha, the tango and the waltz, has never heard of “the squirrel.”

“What’s that?” she asks Jacoby Jones, a Ravens wide receiver and her partner on the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars,” who’d like to work it into one of their routines.

It’s only Ray Lewis’ signature move, he tells her.

“Oh,” she says. “You mean the slide, slide, knee, knee kick? I’ve never seen a squirrel do anything like that.”

Jones laughs, but Smirnoff gets it — and knows exactly what such a move would mean to Baltimore. “Oh, yeah,” she says. “We’re totally putting that in.”

Lots more at the Baltimore Sun. Be sure you read how Karina made him take off the first t-shirt Jacoby wore to practice. He found out quick she likes to have fun, but, wants respect and she means business too (lol Loves this!). The link also says they will be doing “a very modern cha-cha, set to a youthful radio hit” on Monday night and they want it to be a surprise.

DWTS16: Introducing our NEW TROUPE MEMBERS!

Well DWTSers, it looks like they’re expanding the Troupe this year, from 6 dancers to 8! Sharna was promoted out of the troupe this season, so we knew we would get at least one new pro troupe members. Instead, we get THREE!

First, ELENA SAMODANOVA… She comes to us from Australia’s DWTS, like Gleb, who is one of our new teaching pros.

Elena was born in a dance family so she started dancing before walking. Since her infant years Elena has always been on the dance floor dancing to all different styles of music..

During her youth Elena has won many Russian championships and awards in Latin American and Ballroom genres internationally.
Elena became a professional dancer at the tender age of 16 and she became the “World Youngest Professional Latin American Dancer” and soon after such, Elena was ranked the Top 20 dance couple in the world ranking in Latin American genre. Even since she has been performing, teaching and competing all over Europe and Asia.

The next decade marked further special achievements in Elena’s career in which she won many more international competitions and championships around the world. In 2009 she hit the Top 10 professional dancers in the World ranking of Latin American. Elena’s titles include being the Asian Professional Champion, Hong Kong Champion, Japanese Champion, Singaporean Champion and England Champion.

Elena has obtained her official certificate as a professional Latin American and Ballroom professional dance teacher and has the highest credentials and qualifications to teach in Russia, Hong Kong, England and Australia.
At this moment Elena Samodanova is the National Australian Professional Latin American Champion having won the 4 major dance titles down under and as a result she will now be representing Australian on the next World Dance Championship this November. This year Elena also makes her DANCING WITH THE STARS debut.

ADDING: What fun! I finally realized that I could possibly find more about our new troupe dancers on You Tube! Elena WAS on DWTS Australia, but my computer wasn’t cooperating with me to play any of those videos! However, I DID find one of her dancing the Paso with Gleb! And, since he’s a New Pro, and one we HAVEN’T seen dance yet, here’s our opportunity!
Elena and Gleb dancing Paso at a private function, 2009(ish)

Second, WITNEY CARSON… Witney competed this past summer on So You Think You Can Dance along side her friend Lindsay, who is now one of our new teaching pros.

Witney Carson was born and raised in American Fork, UT. Witney has been dancing since the age of 3; training, performing, and competing has been her life. Her specialty dance is Ballroom. She recently graduated from American Fork High School, and is ready to start her new adult life!

ADDING: A video from SYTYCD, which seems to be the first week of competition?? (I didn’t watch) She’s dancing Samba with her partner Chehon.

Third, JULZ TOCKER…

Unfortunately, my search has come up scarce, and all I could find on Julz is what’s on his twitter bio, Dancing With The Stars season 16 cast member. International Ballroom and Latin American Champion, Dance Teacher/Coach, Model, Actor and a whole lot more people. That, and he has Gleb and Jason Gilikson on his facebook friends list.

ADDING: Julz was dancing in Australia on the show, “Everybody Dance Now 2012” which ran only one season, and was cancelled. I did find one video with him dancing with his partner Annalisa. He’s in the first 5 minutes of the video…

If you know or can find anything more on Elena, Witney or Julz, PLEASE let us know in the comments, with url or documentation, and we’ll add it and credit you. Unfortunately, all 3 are new to me.

Rounding out the troupe are returning members SASHA FARBER, EMMA SLATER, HENRY BYALIKOV, OKSANA DYMTRENKO, SONNY PEDERSEN.

ADDED: A couple videos from @ButterflyWhirl, thank you!
