Dancing with the Stars Season 16, The Premiere – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
So, on twitter yesterday, Carrie Ann Inaba is already defending the choice of including contemporary as a dance style in this season of DWTS. Because Val and Kelly’s was so great. :::rolls eyes::: Um…no, not really. It didn’t suck, but it certainly wasn’t of the same caliber as the ballroom dances that week. Come on – these are BALLROOM professionals and most regular viewers fell in love with a ballroom dance show.
Okay, so you know I had to get that out there right off the bat, right? Now we can get down to business. I would really, really love to know how they choose who gets what dance. This post will be updated as we learn the dance order. As always, I expect the night one dance order be reflected in their voting number and/or vice versa.
The dances are as follows:
ETA: Remember – I am “assuming” that the voting number coincides with the dance order for week 1, like it has every other season -but they are screwing with things again, so this could change. Don’t know why it would.
ETA 2: Totally called Zendaya’s dance position at the top of the hour.
The current order I have them in were my guesses…and I had Z right. I expect that will be the last one except for Kellie and Derek.
ETA 3: Two for two!! Called Wynonna right as well.
ETA 4: Damn, I’m good.
I’m on a streak – got Sean right as well.
ETA 5: Off by one spot on Dorothy and Victor. It was nice while it lasted.
ETA 6: Geez, TPTB! Soooo predictable. Put the big Superbowl dude last, and your “family” at the top of the hour. People wanted to know how I was guessing, that’s one answer.
Oh, and his Jersey number is 12, isn’t it??
ETA 7: With Derek FINALLY confirming they are going first, we have our complete dance order. I was right about both Kellie and Andy.
Kellie and Derek – Cha Cha Cha

**No insider info on Derek and Kellie’s song, only Derek singing it to her while they are dancing. Which is his way.
Okay, so look at who’s dancing what – anything stand out to you?? What stands out to me is that the three people likely to be in or near the top three have contemporary – the dance likely to be scored the easiest OR likely they are lucky to get it out of the way NOW. Those likely to be the bottom three are all dancing Foxtrot. Everyone else has Cha cha. Of course, there’s another way of looking at it – in each dance style there is one or two who are likely to be either good dancers or have great fanbases. And in each group there is one (or two) who could be cannon fodder. In both the contemporary and foxtrot categories, we have members of the “Family” – Zendaya and Sean – which means that in week 2 they will likely get fun, upbeat dances…right before the first elimination. I predict that both also end up near the top of the leaderboard, whether they deserve it or not.
So, you have three dance styles - why not four couples in each style?? The math certainly works for them. Unless of course, you use dance style as another manipulative tool. :-)
Here’s some trivia for you. Counting only seasons 5 through 16 and only including the pros who have been on most every one of those seasons (Derek, Mark, Cheryl, Tony, Maks, Karina, and Kym), do you think there is an even mix of who gets what on night one?? If you answered yes, you would be wrong.
- Derek has danced Cha cha the first night 6 of his 11 seasons; the first four seasons he was on he danced Cha Cha. When he wasn’t dancing Cha Cha or sitting a season out he danced V. Waltz (3), Foxtrot (1), or Salsa (1)
- Karina has danced Cha Cha the first night 7 of that 12 season span; the other four seasons she danced foxtrot (3) and waltz (1), and sat one season out.
- Cheryl has danced Cha Cha the first night 9 of that 12 season span; the other three seasons she danced V. Waltz (2) and Foxtrot (1). If you include every season Cheryl’s been on the show, she’s danced Cha Cha on night one *12* out of fifteen seasons. Incredible.
- The remaining pros – Mark, Kym, Tony, Maks – danced cha cha on night one 5 of the 12 seasons, the rest being and even mix of other styles.
Since Cha Cha is always included in Week 1, with the other dance being V. Waltz or Foxtrot and the occasional quickstep and salsa, you would expect the pros do dance it about half the time…but Cheryl and the Week 1 Cha Cha is out of control. I’m not sure what it means, but it’s just trivia. ;-)

Great trivia Miss! I love it. So interesting! But, why does Cheryl get the Cha Cha first always? Doesn’t seem fair!
Here’s to the premiere. I can’t wait!! Loves this post every week!!! Now I know the premiere is coming shortly! Woo Hoo
Aaaah! It’s finally here! Thanks so much for the work PH!! I have to say, if Domino is their song, I’m glad Kellie won’t be dancing to country music every week. Didn’t they do that with Billy Ray most of the time when he was on? Anyway, it’s a good song, so I’m excited for Kellie.
In my humble opinion, the bottom four were given Foxtrot, setting them up as canon fodder. Especially since three out of four of the pros are new. I believe that Aly, Wynonna, and Dorothy are the biggest “gets” this season and one of them should get the pimp spot. If they give it to Sean, we’ll know something is up. All this being said, I don’t think Cheryls fanbase can save her and D.L. from being the first ones sent home. This sight is epic, thanks for all the hard work you all put in it, it is very much appreciated.:-)
So happy to see this post, have been watching for it cause it means it’s time! You guys are awesome, thanks for all the hard work to keep this site so fun and informative.
I saw on an interview for Radio Disney that Zendaya and Val were rehearsing a Jive. I am guessing that is their week 2 dance. Which, yes, is very upbeat and Zendaya actually looks very good doing it :O
I think the second week dances will be sort of mixed up too. if i remember correctly i think kym & ingo go from contemporary to qstep and derek & kellie go from cha cha to jive.
Kellie and Derek also have Jive week 2, which is very, very interesting, considering that usually the Cha Cha’s first week get V. Waltz or Quickstep in week 2. Who know what they’re up to this season. Besides massive audience manipulation, that is.
I think Lindsay and Victor have Jive week 2 as well. In one of the sets of pictures (getty images maybe?) they were holding up a card that said Jive.
That interesting Heidi. Both Cha-Cha and Jive are both fun dances, not sure if that is such a good idea. Could work in their favor or maybe not.
I am Anxious to see if Jacoby is now feeling humbled and ready to grow by this experience and opportunity, or is he still of the mindframe that he is an excellent dancer and is giving us the honor of viewing his talent.
Tonight will be his judgement day… So to speak.
I think Andy and Dorothy will gain the most from this experience, I am sure Dorothy will stick around for quite some time, maybe even till the finals, not sure how long Andy will on, hopefully long enough to get the job done.
I’m not sure why it would work against them at this point. Cha Cha and Jive are very different, but still fun. It’s not like doing four latin in a row the way Joanna did. And certainly not as bad as doing four ballroom in a row. When it gets to be week 3 and they give her another uptempo (excluding quickstep) dance, then there might be an issue. But, it certainly didn’t hurt Joanna to do four latin – and very similar latin – in a row.
Spot-on, PH! I’ve been saying for a while that the people with contemporary are at least going to get it out of the way. Also, no one is going home this week – there’s no elimination show. Of course, the scores/votes will be combined into next week, but still…
As for the week 2 dances, I saw that Kellie & Derek have Jive, and Ingo and Kym have been working on Quickstep… nothing like TPTB making it hard for you.
My fave post of the week when DWTS is on! Thanks Heidi! Well…. add me to the group of color me confused when TPTB threw in contemporary during the FIRST week of dances. When, I learned there are only 3 out of the 12 doing it, I began to think these are the 3 that THEY might want going very very far in the comp. Contemporary is going to catch the eye of the audience during the 1st week because it’s only been done once before in competition. *NOT FAIR* But when have things been fair on DWTS in the last several season…. Foxtrot is my least fave ballroom dance, so I am glad that my fave couple (Derek & Kellie) are dancing the cha cha cha. It is interesting thought that Kellie has latin dances the first 2 weeks. If I were to hazard a guess, I would also predict judges’ scoring putting Zendaya and Sean towards the top of the leaderboard tomorrow night … I am hoping Kellie will be right there with them!
I read somewhere (I think in Derek’s blog for TV Guide) that he’s more excited about the jive than their cha cha, and that he’s got some really intricate choreography in there – so it should be good!
This is most excited I have been for Derek and one of his partners in a long time. I think Derek and Kellie will definitely be the couple to watch this season.
My favorites as of right now are: Derek and Kellie, Andy and Sharna, and Dorothy and Tristan. And really I don’t expect that to change much.
Thanks for the info/update PH.
Do you think that Peta is really still “family”? Maybe Karina would weigh in on the chances of that…LOL. Maybe it depends who is the dumper and who is the dumpee with the “family”.
Wish there wasn’t so much Jacoby hate going into this. The guy’s comments are made tongue in cheek. In the rest of the Baltimore Sun article that you posted earlier this week, they point out that both Karina and Jacoby have fun talking trash with each other. She told him “You talk so much sh*t, that the sh*t comes in the room 5 minutes before you do”. He loved it, saying he hadn’t heard that before. He’s really a nice guy who does lots of work with kids in the off season.
@Minnie: I think “In the family” was referred to “In the ABC family, since Disney is associated with ABC.
So Cheryl, as has been said on prior occasions, is the teacher’s pet overall, it seems to me.
At least when she had partners as bad as Wayne Newton and Tom DeLay, she went early. D.L. is easily in that category for me along with his unsavory comments.
The more I see clips and photos of Zendaya rehearsing, the more I’m thinking she have a shot. Barring any annoying behavior in her packages, I think she could pick up many voters who otherwise didn’t know who she was and had no intention of voting for her out of the gate. She appears to be a very good learner, which isn’t easy, imo.
Yeah getting so excited for Monday night.
Interesting perspective on the dance choices/picks for week one.
Thanks for all the hard work, ladies.
I lift my glass to you all and here’s to a great season.
…just so I keep up with what’s going on, what exactly is “canon fodder”?
Cannon fodder is pretty much the ones that you don’t care if they’re eliminated – the expendable ones. It’s from when battles were fought with cannons, and if there was a place you needed to attack, but the enemy’s artillery (primarily cannons) was particularly fierce, and the troops going up against them would almost certainly die, you wouldn’t send in your best troops – you’d send in the troops that were expendable. It didn’t matter if they were good soldiers or not; they were just bodies to feed the cannons with – hence the term cannon fodder.
Here, cannon fodder would be the couples TPTB don’t really care if they stick around or not – strategically, they’re bodies to fill spaces with, and you need *someone* to go home the first week, and you wouldn’t want that someone to be your top talent or big names, so you have some people in the cast who can be your first eliminees.
It’s no wonder than fans are always claiming that Derek breaks the rules all the time – the DWTS radio twitter account is now reinforcing that he breaks the rules. I’m trying to figure out what role they’re trying to force on him right now. Are they trying to handicap him or pimp him?? I’m thinking the former.
AHH!!! I am getting so excited! Great work so far this season PH, Voguerista, Courtney and Lori! *APPLAUSE* WOOOHOO BRING ON MONDAY!
You’re making it about Maks, minnie, when it has nothing to do with him. His family doesn’t count in this situation – he has no extra pull, obviously, since much of his “family” didn’t last in the troupe. I was talking about Sean and Zendaya – both employees of ABC/Disney, aka “family”.
I am REALLY sick of the word “hate” – it is SO misused and that is SO ignorant. I realize it’s trendy to say anyone who doesn’t agree or doesn’t care for something is automatically a “hater” but that doesn’t make it right. It’s just so…stupid. Hate is a VERY strong emotion and I’ve yet to see anyone express that emotion towards Jacoby. I’m not saying YOU are stupid, minnie – just the current over-use of the word.
Frankly, I have to say that saying I am a “hater” of anything is flattering that person way more than they deserve – be it Mark (he wishes), Maks or anyone else connected to the show.
That implies I have a strong emotion towards them when most of the time what you’re seeing is apathy or a lack of caring…at most, mild dislike. No desire to kiss someones ass does NOT equal “hate”.
Well said, butterfly.
sorry on both counts. just recalling all the “family” talk during All Stars and falling into the trap of internet speak.
all duly noted!
I’m wondering who in the contemporary group might be considered canon fodder?
re #22 PH, hmm, they talk like they want fun, fresh…but they talked like that last season, show us something we haven’t seen then *whack*. And lots of people like to call it cheating. So, if they are trying to pimp him they’re doing it in a pretty risky way.
He seems to not really fight that impression though, doesn’t go to great lengths to point out how very little rule breaking he did last season. At least they haven’t been able to reduce and confine him to a boring box.
That’s never been his style, to stand up and say “NO sir, I did NOT break the rules.” I think maybe he doesn’t care that much and knows that regardless of what he choreographs there are going to be times he gets yelled at for no reason and other times when he gets over the top praise for doing what he previously got yelled at for. Bad grammar warning.
Look at his and Maria’s jive – that was WAY outside the box and they got rave reviews for it. I fully expected him to get hosed and he likely expected it too. Then, the very next season, he does a pretty fun cha cha that is easily recognized as cha cha, throws in a few country steps because it was Country theme night, and has a few set pieces…and gets totally hosed by Len. So, really, at what point do you see the game that is being played and just decide to do your own thing and OWN it. He never complains when he gets hosed either – what point would it serve??
I think of all the pros, Derek is the one that most clearly sees that it’s all a big, manipulated game. He’s a good employee, so he doesn’t out it as a game, but he goes about and plays it his way. It must be somewhat freeing to just let go and do your thing.
As for pimping versus handicapping – I think they (the producers) very much want his choreo to be out of the box and rule breaking, and want to advertise it – but are too stupid to know that there is a really stupid fraction of the audience that sees that as “cheating”. Again, with the mis-used words. :::sigh::: The English language is going to hell in a handbasket. According to Websters, it’s not possible for a dancer to really cheat at DWTS, except MAYBE through wardrobe that hides feet and legs which could be “violate rules dishonestly” – and even then it could really only be hiding lifts through the use of a very long skirt. And they’ve all done that.
Simply breaking the rules isn’t cheating because there it’s not done “dishonestly” and there are consequences. Now the producers…THEY can cheat.
CHEAT
1 to deprive of something valuable by the use of deceit or fraud
2 to influence or lead by deceit, trick, or artifice
3 to elude or thwart by or as if by outwitting
intransitive verb
1 to practice fraud or trickery
to violate rules dishonestly
2 to be sexually unfaithful —usually used with on
3 to position oneself defensively near a particular area in anticipation of a play in that area
I’m keep hoping that the “family” doesn’t get preferential treatment, but then I stop and think and realize of course they will. I’m so tired of the Disney kids and the Bachelor/Bachelorette group on here. There are so many other people that could be asked that they’re not necessary. My favorites right now are Dorothy/Tristan, Ingo/Kim and Kellie/Derek. I see Andy, Victor and DL leaving early.
Thanks PH!
Hoping for the season to turn out well, and that the couples *I* would like to see leave early end up being the cannon fodder.
I don’t mind the kids because they are at least usually talented if not multitalented
Ah! thanks, PH. Been looking forward to this post. The excitement just keeps building. I can’t wait to see this group take to the floor.
I’m hoping for a less chaotic season than the last one, with a happy, less stressed out cast. Like Butterfly, if the couples I don’t care for leave early, so much the better
Dwtsgossip says Zendaya and Val is dancing 6th
woohoo we are getting close.
Be sure to read the post before telling me the dance order. Or at least give me five seconds to actually WRITE something. Thx.
BTW – it was VAL who told their dance order. DWTSGossip was just repeating it.
PH, Just out of curiosity, why do you think Derek and Kellie are dancing first?
Derek, dancing cha cha with cute, able girl, to an upbeat, popular song. Seems like a no brainer, but it’s just a hunch on my part.
That, and three of his five previous opening night cha chas were danced in the team one position.
Sorry Heidi
Gotcha
I’d bet that a cha cha is going to be the first this season. If I remember correctly, the past three seasons a cha cha has opened the show.
Getting excited. Thanks Heidi!!
Wonder if they’re going on the order from the ABC announcement.
I hope Kellie & Derek are not first. Sometimes viewers miss the first performance. I know he and his partners usually go 1st w/Cha Cha but he did go 5th w/Brooke S7 and next to last in S9 with Joanna. I believe it was a Salsa that season.
Heck she’s to funny to be first on opening night-lol I’m hoping they dance in the second hour.
#13 Elmari
ITA with your comments about Contemporary and that there may be some underlined manipulation in giving it to these three couples. I hadn’t reads your comments but those were my feelings exactly. Contemporary is different and if done properly very beautiful. It is interesting too that only 3 contestants are doing it.
To TPTB, please, please don’t interfere with this season.
I’m just so excited! I’m so ready for DWTS!:)
THIS SEASON I’M KINDA ROOTING FOR EVERYBODY! I MEAN I LIKE THEM ALL!
Thanks for all the trivia! Can anyone explain why Cha-cha usually opens the show? Just curious if anyone has a theory on it. Thanks for all the insights!
Derek went first with cha cha many times. Jennie, Shannon, Lil Kim, and Maria. Would not surprise me if it happened again with Kellie.
Literally right after you update, Peta posts her and Sean’s number. Haha!
Great job going two for two so far!
You guys are all kinds of awesome when it comes to calling things for Wynonna – the first to mention the possibility of her being ON the show in the first place, and now getting her dancing order right.
Whoa, and just as I said that you did it again…
Totally good guessing on dance order so far, PH!!! Do you use some special “nerd” formula you’d care to pass on … um, I spose if you did that, you’d have to “eliminate” us.
LOL^^
Heidi, I’ve known you how many seasons now and I swear you are psychic!!!!!
He wasn’t first with Shannon, I don’t think, Melissa.
Well Cha-Cha isn’t always the dance to open, Chelsea Kane opened season 12 with a foxtrot, but cha cha has been the opening dance since then. I am hoping it isn’t this season because that means Aly or Kellie will be first, I know dance order doesn’t always mean something, but those are my too favorites. I want them to dance towards the end of the show!
There is a nerd formula…but really it’s just from watching and analyzing the show. I fully expect to be wrong from here on out.
The easy ones were first.
haha I was thinking she PH was psychic or else DWTS producers took a look at her list and just went hell that looks great, let’s go with it. lol
But oh darn, you may have gotten your first miss, but you were close! Dorothy is dancing 9th according to a tweet by @SarahHughesNY. Dorothy hasnt tweeted anything yet so we can wait and see if she verifies it.
I think Derek will go first. He seems to go first more seasons than any other pro. I am curious how many times he has gone first.
Only four times, I believe, Lois.
Not that it means anything necessarily, but Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes tweeted about an hour ago that Tristan and Dorothy have the -09 number.
PH, Shannon went first. Women premiered on the second night that season and Shannon danced first.
Okay…still only 5 times out of 11 seasons. But my odds are still good.
I hope Jacoby and Karina, Dorothy and Tristan, and Lisa and Gleb do well the first time out!
Good god, Peta’s already spamming twitter. She’s going to be unbearable until they get voted off. Heaven forbid they make it to the end.
Sarah Hughes just tweeted Dorothy and Tristan were #3409. That means they’re dancing 9th right? And you were SO close! WOW
Well, if Dorothy is going 9th, PH was only off by one spot – she has her at 8th.
Victor tweeted he is dancing second
Aww crap! Now I have to reprogram the speed dial on my phone! lol
I just noticed you put Jacoby last. I was thinking he’d be last also. They always wanna save the “best” for last and want the person who is like “the most talked about of the season” to go last (or near last in some cases). Let’s hope he can dance and doesn’t take the whole “save the best for last” concept down the drain lol
And I really wish they were doing the V. Waltz instead of the Foxtrot
I agree the Foxtrot is perhaps more fun, but there is something about the V. Waltz that for me is so much more entertaining… it’s my #2 on my top 5 favorite dances.
I just want to give a BIG Pre-Show Thank You to all the mods who run this site, Vogue, Heidi, Courtney, Lori and John, who spend tireless hours keeping us DWTS junkies entertained with all the latest DWTS news and views.
You do a fabulous job and your dedication does not go unnoticed. Thank you.
Peta and Ingo for the MBT!!! Got all phones programmed and accounts ready. Team #Murgalo
Except is is Ingo and Kym.
LOL!
@Amanda – Peta & Sean? Lol..
I think this time around Aly is gonna be first. Start off with the gymnast to make an impact! yay!
I second that Sandy!
What Sandy said!!
Thanks peoples
Karina had her nails done with #12 on them. His jersey number is 12. Someone on fb was saying she asked to go 12th rotflmao. I don’t think Karina has that power….now Cheryl, maybe lol.
Well if I were Karina and my partner’s jersey number was 12, I’d sure ask for it to be my voting number for the season!
I can see them having Aly go first since she’s “previously performed” on the show.
Thanks! LOL Had Ingo in my mind. Sexy guy! But will be voting for Sean and Peta. Again, Go Team #Murgalo
Evaine, True
Apolo has 8 medals and he is “8″ crazy and thought it’d be cool, but he got 3407 instead lol.
I have a really random question: Does anyone know/think the “.5″ paddles will stick around? Or does anyone think we’ll go back to whole numbers?
Tony, I have no info to base this on, but I think they’ll go back to whole numbers. It seemed to me the .5 paddles were just another bit of window-dressing they added for the All-Stars who were supposed to be “the best of the best”
The judges did a lousy job using them the way they ought to have been used, and they made it hard for Brooke and some of the cast to add up their scores.
@Cidra: I’m hoping for whole numbers too. I get how .5 paddles were necessary for the All-Stars, but we’re back to normal (or some semblance of it anyway…) so I’m hoping for whole numbers.
Aly just tweeted that her number ends in 08 so her and Mark go eighth.
A new voting number finally. We got a rush of them at once and then nothing for a while.
Yo! I have twitter! We know how it works. Thanks.
I really don’t get having contemporary as a dance and it’s really not fair to me. I’m not a dancing expert but doesn’t contemporary have like NO rules. And cha cha and foxtrot have like a BUNCH??? Oh well, I think Jacoby, Aly, Dorothy and Zendya will be the frontrunners tomorrow. Aly suprised me by how cheeky she was in her rehearsel package so I think she can shake it.
I feel like Zendaya is probably the biggest ringer since Nicole but i’m ok with that
. I definitely have a lil crush for her and I wish she was a doing a more ballroomy dance and not stupid contemporary. Jacoby I think is just a narural mover and even though he seems cocky I think he’ll be entertaining and Dorothy is adorable and she’s like an olympic legend so I think she combines potential skill and potential fanbase better than anybody. As for the rest I’m just really excited to see!! Here’s to tomorrow night.
i think the top dances for each dance will be Zendaya for Contemporary, Kellie for Cha-cha and Andy for Foxtrot
@vallygal are you kidding me when you say Val is the only pro to never win i recall Tristan has never won from the returning pro side either
Gleb tweeted that he and Lisa is going fourth tommrow
And the madness begins…
It came so fast this season. I really have no horse in this race so maybe I’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the season. Doubt it.
Fancy, good luck with that; I’d like to give that “sitting back” a try myself.
My guess is once they’re out of the gate, one of the horses will catch your “Fancy” (LOL, sorry, couldn’t resist). Then you’ll be sucked into the madness again.
Totally agree, Cidra. Thought I try the sitting back thing myself a few seasons ago but you know happened! lol
Why is Andy dancing at the end of the show is the question I have. Starting to think that he is better than I thought he was going to be.
Vin, According to Melissa on GMA, The Berge says Andy is better than people are expecting him to be. TPTB probably also are leaving him ’til near the end for the drama — can he dance? will he be sober? will he do something inappropriate? — stupid stuff like that.
I am not sure that Andy dancing near the end is because he is a good dancer. I think it is because many people just want to see him and his story.
Didn’t Andy admit that he’d had an emotional breakdown already? That could be why.
Vin, why did Chaz go last in week 1? Why did Gladys go second to last in week 1? Wny did Kirstie go last in week 1? David Arquette? Pam Anderson/Kate Gosselin??
RATINGS. This show is all about ratings and going towards the end doesn’t mean you’re a great dancer, but perhaps a reason why people tune in. Since Season 10 or 11, this show has cast 1 or 2 people per season that they expect to have serious train wreck potential. As disgusting as it is, it’s all about business.
Well I hope they don’t dwell on that part of his story, he has a much bigger story to tell than that. And I want to share in his journey.
BTW, He might not have been the only cast member that had a reality check smack them in the face either.
I get why he is at the end of the show now. Whoever whould have thought Andy Dick would be such a ratings draw? lol
Unfortunately, they are going to dwell on it. Just like they will dwell on Sean taking his clothes off, Zendaya being a child (and Val having to tone down “the sex”), Kellie being dingy and so on.
Really, when show becomes this predictable, perhaps they need to go back to basics. Let the damn contestants dance and then score them based on their dancing and not your own agenda.
AI’s ratings have slipped into the 11 million range and they were regularly beating DWTS. I think we can expect another big slide from DWTS since they don’t seem to understand what makes it worse, and not better.
So would Wynonna be the locomotive and Andy be the caboose?
@Princess Heidi: Since you brought up Idol, I figured I’d chime in real quick. Is it just me or does the show seem to be pushing for Candice, Angela Miller, Lazaro, or Burnell to win? Between the BS judging from two of the four judges (Randy and Nicki…….I love Mariah and Keith though they know their stuff) and the blantant pimping of contestants its a shell of it’s former self. Case in point, last week with Curtis Finch Jr.
I just wanted to say Thank You for all your work. I’ve been lurking on your site for years and have watched every episode of every season since the first, except the All Stars season… made it about 1/2 way through and gave up… but you girls kept me involved. I don’t enjoy every “celebrity” they have on the show, but then I’m not their target audience. I’m sad to see anything other than ballroom creep into the season, but am looking forward to tonight. I love your recaps and rankings and keeping the comments area clear of wackos and all you do!
Good one, RJ.
from the GMA last minute preview video, it sounds like Dorothy is dancing to “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers (aka the love scene song in the movie Ghost.
Half the time I don’t know what the judges are hearing on AI – that one chick who wrote and performed her own songs was the one that was being pimped, but she hasn’t been good since them. The other women that they’re pimping are actually VERY good. None of the men are good, don’t even know why they’re there. The whole 10 girls/10 guys thing is STOOPID. Go with the ten best – they ruin it trying to keep it even.
The one who performed her own song was Angela Miller. I agree she has not sounded as good since then. I agree that the 10/10 thing was annoying. They made Vegas week too long.
Oooh, mimiK, hope you heard right. I love “Unchained Melody” and it should be a song that Dorothy will find easy to connect with.
When will we know the songs??
Since you’re talking about Idol… I agree with PH on going with the 10 best. Nigel Lythgoe made it clear he wants a girl to win this year. He almost could have guaranteed it if they didn’t have to pick 10 guys and send girls who were more talented home. Overall the guys have not impressed me this year because they’re so inconsistent – kind of like 2 of the judges.
Keith and Mariah are the most consistent of the four. Sometimes I don’t think Randy is actually listening. Nicki is like the CAI of Idol because she seems to be judging with her lady parts…
I agree. They let go of some good singers because of the 10 boy/10 girl thing. I liked Brianna. She put many of the guys to shame!
All in all, this is my favorite season of American Idol of all of them. With an exception to Nicki (after being late twice now, they should can her. She’s so rude and bossy and hogs the judging time), I’m really liking the judges. I loved the sudden death rounds.
Yeah, talk about unprofessional!! Idol goes on the air at the same time as DWTS does (5 pm in the west), there is no excuse for being late to the live show. Who does that?
I’ve been enjoying Mariah and Keith – they sure do know their stuff and really, who can out-diva Mariah? She’s stellar. *LOL* Randy spends his time telling the contestant either who they sound like or who they should strive to sound like, all the while telling them to be themselves. *eyeroll* And Nicki… OMG, I can’t STAND her! Her voice alone is like fingernails on a blackboard.
That being said, I miss the rockers. There are no rockers a la Daughtry or Cook or even Lambert. It’s all pretty much the same same. I do like Candace though. She really got to me last week. I agree with y’all about Angie. She was great with her own song, but didn’t do anything really outstanding after that.
I think the producers told the judges to focus on the females this season and there were probably some really, really good guys that we never got to see.
Yep and to think …how many millions is she making to do this gig and yet she treats it like it’s second rate.
She is getting paid a lot of money for eye-rolling, showing up late, and flirting I think. Honestly, the ones I like are : 1)Amber 2)Devin 3)Candince 4)Angie 5)Paul (I honestly hated him in the beginning and thought he was a one-trick pony BUT last week I was like WOW. And to think this week is Beatles/Lennon and Mccartney songbooks. Nothing like hearing the Beatles being butchered to realize how good Sir Paul is lol.
Thought I would chime in & say thnaks for all the great! info in anticipation of tonight. I love coming hear and reading all your thoughts and ideas (and graphs)! As far as Idol goes, I am really loving Keith and all his thoughtful comments and the really great voices (Candice, Kree, Amber). I do miss some of my old favorites (David Cook, David Archuleta, Adam L etc.)
Before the season is officially underway I just wanted to thank all the mods. You are all fantastic, finding such great stories, videos, predictions, interesting charts and just great commentary.
I am looking forward to this season – hopefully drama free – just dancing enjoyment.
Well I was going to play an Idol drinking game where I’d have to drink each time Nicki rolled her eyes, did her side-eye thing, or gave the stink eye to Mariah, but I figured I’d be too plastered by the end of the show… Instead I have decided on playing one involving one of the DWTS celebs…
It’s not really important I guess but I’m kinda surprised that the songs everyone’s dancing to seem to have been kept secret this year. Usually we seemed to know most of those before the show.
You just gave me a fun game for Idol RJ.
You know the songs, Eric, because we usually post them. Since we didn’t post them this week, you don’t know them.
