DWTS 16, Week 1 – Power Rankings

And so ends our first post-all-stars episode of DWTS! Gotta say – overall, I think I’m happy.  Granted, my standards were pretty low, but I think this season’s cast has a lot of personality and potential – aside from a few low points (D.L., Sean, and Len, who was a complete asshat tonight), there were some pleasant surprises (namely Wynonna & Andy) and some promising contenders (Jacoby, Kellie, Dorothy, and maybe Aly).  So let’s break it down, shall we?

1.) Jacoby & Karina – I will be surprised if this guy does not win this season, let me put that out there.  I know, I know – some of you think he’s cocky and his footwork is messy.  But as I recall, many of our readers said the same thing about Donald in week one of season 14, and he really grew on people as the season wore on – I expect that Jacoby will likely do the same, especially since Karina doesn’t seem like the type to tolerate arrogance, and I think Jacoby has already improved since his initial interviews.  He was definitely the most charistmatic one on the floor tonight, for me – absolutely no fear, total attack, and you could tell he was having a blast.  Yeah, the routine was a bit chaotic and his feet & posture were pretty bad – but the potential is definitely there, and I daresay he did better with only about a week’s worth of rehearsal than some other couples did with the full 3 weeks.  I think Karina was probably wise to make that cha-cha feel like a touchdown dance – if you’re limited on time, stick with what you know will work.  She did the same thing with The Situation and managed to get him past week 1 with only a limited amount of practice.  These two will be around for awhile, and I’m interested to see how they develop.

2.) Zendaya & Val – For a girl that’s only 16, she dances with a maturity greater than many of the ladies this season – and some of them are old enough to be her mother! She’s probably the most naturally-skilled dancer this season, judging from what we saw tonight – she was fluid, relaxed, comfortable, and really seemed to get in the pocket of the dance.  And god bless Val for finally reaching the potential I thought he had back in season 13 – for a pro that doesn’t really know contemporary, that was a great routine, and the emotion was appropriate: it was innocent and casual, and not overwrought with the sexual undertone that so many of his dances with Kelly had.  I think this may be the season that we really see him become a contender – maybe the fact that he’s not stuck in the shadow of big bro this time has taken a bit of the weight off his shoulders, and he can really focus on stretching his chops and really making his partner shine.  And shine she will – she’s a gorgeous girl, and those legs are a revelation.  Definitely a bright spot this season – I just hope that she’ll overcome the Disney curse and get viewers to pick up a phone! Dancing with the Stars Season 16: Week 1 Score Predictions

Here you have it folks the first predicted scores of the season… You didn’t think I’d forget did ya? Well I thought I did, since I seem to have forgotten that the start of the season was today! Geez, you’d think I would have this on my calendar somewhere.

Anyway… after looking at the dances that are scheduled for the first week I realized that my typically spreadsheet data is going to be thrown into the dumpster because everything has gone astray! don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself…
DWTS16-Week1Predict
I can’t even rank them! Ugh…

So I don’t know what to do… at least at the moment. I am tempted to just do the score prediction and not even bothering with how they rank because contemporary is such an outlier and out of box concept for ballroom dancers that it just doesn’t seem quite fair.

Grr grr grr…

. . .

Ah well… let’s see how this first week pans out before I really throw in the white towel… I am sure in the coming weeks something will reveal itself so I could provide the best calculations I know for you guys to enjoy.

Maybe I do have to include Season 15 afterall… gosh darn… it.

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

DWTS Season 16 Competitors Tell What Makes Them Sexy (Video), Cheryl Burke Blogs

In Cheryl Burke’s first Dancing With The Stars Season 16 blog for People.com, she writes of D.L. Hughley’s struggle in the beginning. He has a lot to improve on, but, they’ve got a “motto” set which you can read about in this take and more…

But it’s always a struggle in the beginning. D.L. has more room for improvement, but he’s learned his routine. We had a big breakthrough when we were actually able to get through the whole routine to music. He just needs to loosen up a little and have a good time. At the end of the day, even if he’s not going to be the best technical dancer, at least he has personality and can show people that he’s having fun.

D.L. doesn’t take himself too seriously – and that’s great. But I showed him old footage of a previous partner, Emmitt Smith, who glowed when he was dancing. He had so much charisma. I told D.L. to do what he does when he’s doing stand-up comedy.

I’m sure he’s nervous. It’s something he’s never done before. Dancing and flying are the most terrifying things to him. That’s why he signed up to do this show – he wanted to do something that was completely out of his comfort zone. Our first dance is the cha cha. He really needs to loosen up his hips. He says his hips are shy. We have to get them moving. At the end of the day, he’s physical. He can really hear the music. He dances on time to it.

D.L. is going to be fine. I told him that no matter what, I will see him on the other side, which means we just have to get to our last move. He said some of his friends would say the same thing to each other before a stand-up routine. That’s going to be our motto this season.

Something just does not feel right about this? I get a negative vibe more than all of her partners?

Andy Dick Has Found Another Way Of Rehabilitating His Mind, Body and Soul By Doing DWTS

Andy Dick spoke with ET Online about his first week of struggles with learning to dance. He also speaks of why he decided to dance and how he’s learned another way to rehabilitate his mind, body and soul. More below (I love the highlighted part) and at ET Online.

ETonline: How have the rehearsals been for you?
Dick: The first week was hell and I thought it would never let up. But then it suddenly got to be fun and now I’m smiling and laughing in rehearsals. I have the dance down, so now it’s about refining it so we can kick everybody’s ass.

ETonline: Everyone has different reasons for doing DWTS. Some want a career reinvention, some want to lose weight and others just come for the experience. What brought you aboard?
Dick: I think all of the above. I went in to rehabilitate people’s opinions of me. I feel like when I walk into a casting room, everyone starts shaking their head, like, “Oh, that guy?” Whether it’s true or not, that’s how I feel. Plus, if you win, you win a million dollars. So then it became about the money. But what I did not anticipate was that I would be rehabilitating my mind, body and soul. I have grown more as a person in the last two weeks than I have in the last 10 years. The old me would have quit within the first few hours. But I got through those tough days and now I feel like I can almost do anything. I feel like even if I’m the first one voted off, I’m already a changed man and have gotten everything out of this experience that I needed.

THIS is what Dancing With The Stars is all about!!! Go Andy!!

Dorothy Hamill Very Nervous Going Into Tonight’s Dancing With The Stars Premiere

ESPN Playbook interviewed Dorothy Hamill!! In the new interview, Dorothy she tells them she’s very nervous and doesn’t think she will be very good at dancing, but, she’s looking forward to the learning from the best dancers. Below is more for how she’s feeling going into tonight. I think she’s going to surprise herself and be better than she thinks. We will soon see?

How are your emotions heading into Monday’s live show?

“I’m very nervous. I know a lot of people are thinking ice skating translates easily to dancing because skating is musical and seems very dance-like. But the movements are so different. I still have a ways to go. I’m getting frustrated during the learning process right now. I’m trying not to be too hard on myself. I just want to make sure I don’t injure my partner, Tristan MacManus!”

The perfectionist in you is coming through, right?

“It’s so frustrating. Tristan doesn’t appear to get frustrated but he knows I am. He has been so patient. What seems like a simple idea of taking a step forward isn’t as easy as you might think. I’m used to pushing and gliding on the ice and it doesn’t work the same way on the dance floor. It sounds like such an easy direction. I’ve been skating for, what, 50 years? You don’t unlearn things that quickly.”

“It’s a great challenge for me. The only thing I do know is ice skating. After 56 years, it’s great to have the opportunity to learn proper instructions in something else. I have this great opportunity to learn from amazing dancers. I know that it’s something that I won’t be great at. I just think it’s going to be a fun experience.”

More below including some Ab talk too.

UPDATE: Sean and Peta were also on E News. You can watch the rehearsal interview here.

Dancing with the Stars Season 16: Pre-Season Predictions – Eliminations

Yay I’m back!… Well kind of… ;-) I apologize for the delay but I had this post completed when the initial cast announcements happened and then… life got in the way? Well I don’t really have a good idea or reason for that, but what can I do? And when I was ready to post it was a week off from the “Sean Lowe” announcement and so I just added him to the mix and completely forgot about the post again… Yes shoot me. So now you get two posts from me today… the first would be the following distribution and the second being the actual Predictions for the first week of scores.

Taking the above into account, a part of me was really considering about sitting this season out, I mean I got burned out last season when TPTB really threw a lot of curve balls to my spreadsheets and predictions that it got to the point that I just kind of threw in the towel because of the ridicuolous-ness of it all. And when I heard wind of TPTB putting contemporary and jazz into the mix… well let’s just say that I was not happy at all.

But… it’s a new season, and after the cast announcement I realize that I am familiar with at least half of the cast and as thus I probably should follow along for the ride.

So this is what I’m going to do… There are going to be two tables (since the blog space is not wide enough to do what I REALLY want to do) the first will be the rankings broken down by the following categories:
Professional Partner
Occupation
Age Group

The second table will then reflect how each of the celebrities are grouped in those categories.

Now… I really had to think long and hard about this one… at the moment I decided NOT to add in the scores and data from the All-Star Season (Season 15). Why? Mainly because I consider that data to be skewed in a lot of ways. You have old partnerships, new partnerships, strange dances, all the celebrities knew what they were getting into which changes what could happen through the season… There were just way too many variables than a “normal” season for me to even consider using the data.

However, if the demand to see how the below rankings would change with the inclusion of the All Star Season, I’ll consider it…. time-permitting of course.
