Dorothy Hamill Very Nervous Going Into Tonight’s Dancing With The Stars Premiere
ESPN Playbook interviewed Dorothy Hamill!! In the new interview, Dorothy she tells them she’s very nervous and doesn’t think she will be very good at dancing, but, she’s looking forward to the learning from the best dancers. Below is more for how she’s feeling going into tonight. I think she’s going to surprise herself and be better than she thinks. We will soon see?
How are your emotions heading into Monday’s live show?
“I’m very nervous. I know a lot of people are thinking ice skating translates easily to dancing because skating is musical and seems very dance-like. But the movements are so different. I still have a ways to go. I’m getting frustrated during the learning process right now. I’m trying not to be too hard on myself. I just want to make sure I don’t injure my partner, Tristan MacManus!”
The perfectionist in you is coming through, right?
“It’s so frustrating. Tristan doesn’t appear to get frustrated but he knows I am. He has been so patient. What seems like a simple idea of taking a step forward isn’t as easy as you might think. I’m used to pushing and gliding on the ice and it doesn’t work the same way on the dance floor. It sounds like such an easy direction. I’ve been skating for, what, 50 years? You don’t unlearn things that quickly.”
“It’s a great challenge for me. The only thing I do know is ice skating. After 56 years, it’s great to have the opportunity to learn proper instructions in something else. I have this great opportunity to learn from amazing dancers. I know that it’s something that I won’t be great at. I just think it’s going to be a fun experience.”

Bless her. I hope this is just the way she always goes into a competition and that she’ll be fine as soon as she gets on the floor. If not, she’s doing a great job of talking herself into being bad. I’m sure Tristan is dealing with it calmly, but Dorothy is making *me* a nervous wreck
yeah, um im gonna need dorothy to be a little bit more positive. you gotta put those good thoughts in the air
Dorothy may be taking us on a journey this season, somewhat like Kelly O. Somewhat scared and shy, opening her wings to being confident and more outgoing.
I LOVE Dorothy’s honesty! It appears to me that she is openly expressing her feelings instead of trying to put on some sort of act or fake bravado and I love and appreciate seeing that on this show especially after last season! I think she and Tristan are well matched and my hope is that his calm, easy-going character can help keep her nerves in check. I believe she will surprise herself in the end, by putting out a great dance!
She’s definitely going to do well. She just needs to get those first dance jitters out the way and she’ll do fine.
OK, blonde and C, I’m going to think positive thoughts for her and cross all my fingers and toes. I really want her to do well!
I think she seems more and more comfortable with this adventure with each interview. With her skating tours, she was a “star” and probably given a LOT of autonomy when it came to designing her routines, or at least being able to decide what she was comfortable doing and not pushed to do more. This is different. She’s thrown back to being in the student mode, actively being coached, and maybe for the first time, since she was always a singles skater, having to perform in a partnership where she isn’t already comfortable with every move.
I imagine that’s incredibly jarring, and the sweet, tentative introduction on GMA showed her fear and embarrassment, imo, and with every new peek, she seems happier, more comfortable, and more like she’s really having FUN. I love it! But I think it’s just her nature to be cautious and not be cocky. And I’m pleased about that! I find it endearing and I sure hope the viewing public/voters agree!
I have to laugh, cause some things never change. I wanted her hair as in kid in school and I want her hair now as a middle aged mom!
Loved her outfit, her song and the dance! Go Dorothy and Tristan!
