Pure DWTS 16: Our condolences go out to Carrie Ann

This past Monday was a very emotional one for Carrie Ann, her father, Rodney, passed away this past Thursday.

In her Style Blog in People, Carrie Ann talks about her dress and jewels for the show, but also opens up about losing her father.

Monday night’s fashion choices were important because it was the premiere … but also for other, personal reasons. I needed to feel safe and comfortable. You see, last night was really emotional for me.

My father, Rodney Y. Inaba, passed away this past Thursday morning and it’s been a really challenging time. Losing a loved one is something that is so very hard to understand and cope with. I’m filled with a tremendous sadness but also a relief, for he is in a better place now.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make it through the show with all the emotions that have been overflowing. But I felt my father’s spirit was with me last night, supporting me and cheering me on. And I dedicated the show to him, in gratitude for all that he taught me about life; for his bravery, his courage, his huge heart and his love for the underdog.

He was a special man and to know him was to love him. He was a pioneer, an entrepreneur, an animal lover and he was never afraid to speak his mind. I think I got some of this from him. I’m grateful for the gifts he has bestowed upon me. And in honor of my father, I chose to do the first show and not take the time off because in my heart, I know he would have wanted it that way.

I want to thank my team (hairstylist Anna Maria Orzano, makeup artist Jojo McCarthy and my stylist Kit), Len, Bruno and the ABC and BBC family for supporting me throughout this challenging time and for helping me through the first show.

Dad, I know you’re up there dancing in joy (he used to do a little ballroom/social dancing when he was in the service). I love you.

Carrie Ann, everyone here at Pure DWTS are very sorry for your loss, and can understand the difficulty you’re going through right now.

DWTS Season 16, Week 1 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Hello folks (Hi Cheryl!!!)! 🙂  It’s time once again to take a look at the numbers for a week of dancing. Of course, since there was no elimination this week, this is just an exercise to show you where the dancers stand going into week two. Is it possible for D.L. to overcome his extreme deficit? Well, I kinda doubt it, but you never know. Next Tuesday will either reveal that there are some seriously weak fanbases (by someone other than D.L. getting the boot), or it will reveal nothing at all.

Anyway, I think that the judges didn’t screw the pooch too badly this week, but there’s still plenty of time. What did I agree or disagree with? Well, I’m a proponent of a LOT more use of the 3 and 4 paddles in week 1 and they don’t seem to have that in them unless you don’t practice as much as you should. 😉 As much as I LOVED Wynonna, I think they were a bit kind to her – which is SOP for them when it comes to older, dance-challenged ladies.  I think Kellie got screwed by going first – also typical for these judges. There’s no way that Dorothy and Aly deserve the same score as her. That said, 21 is a good score for both, I’m just thinking that Kellie deserved a point or two higher.   Zendaya? Awesome. Loved the dance and I have high hopes for Val. That said, I think 24 was a bit of a stretch – but only by a point, really. The question on these ladies is – can Kellie keep it up (I think so), can Dorothy loosen up (I hope so) and can Aly ever even HOPE to match up to Shawn (doubt it). No, it’s not fair to compare her to All Stars Shawn – but if you think I’m the only person doing that, yer crazy. It’s how the brain works, whether you want it to or not.

LOVE Andy. Love him. I think he did a better dance that Wynonna did, actually. I certainly enjoyed him FAR more than the cheapo Foxtrot put on by Sean and Peta. What the hell was that, anyway?? But, since Sean is a member of the family, I expect him to be overscored right to the semi-finals. The imaginary scenario…

ABC Exec: :::cough::: Ahem. You know, Conrad, if Sean stays around until, oh, I dunno, week 8 or so, that would tie in perfectly with his and Catherine’s wedding, to air right after DWTS at 9 pm, that week. Whaddaya say?

Conrad: :::sigh::: I’ll see what I can do.

Expect nipples. Just sayin’. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dorothy Hamill Dishes On Her First Dance on Dancing With The Stars and More

The LA Times interviewed Dorothy Hamill after her first dance on Dancing With The Stars. She answers a question on whether she thinks ice skaters have an unfair advantage since they are use to learning choreography. She also talks of the biggest surprise she’s had doing the show so far.

Q: Some fans of the show complain that figure skaters have an unfair advantage because they are used to learning choreography. Some say dancing and figure skating are two entirely different sports and one doesn’t help the other. What are your thoughts about it?

It is true that we are used to choreography, but the movements are so different. In skating, you glide; in dancing you step and must balance. The movements are complete opposites. I find the transition very challenging because in skating you have forward motion, but in dancing the physics are simply different.

Q: You’ve obviously watched the show in the past. What is the biggest surprise to you (that you didn’t realize when watching) about being on the show?

The biggest surprise — and delight — is how supportive and collegial everyone is. There is so much thought and effort which goes into making all of us be successful — costumes, hair and makeup, the producers, set design, the music, the pro dancers and the friendship we are forming among the celebrities. I think it is extraordinary!

More at the LA Times including Dorothy’s thoughts on the pressure and nerves of her first dance on the show versus skating for an Olympic gold medal. *love her!!
