Aly Raisman And Mark Ballas To Dance A Viennese Waltz And Hints For Prom Week
Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas have the Viennese Waltz for Prom week on Dancing With The Stars!! In a new blog with Parade, Aly she writes of what her Senior Prom was like and how she wore a chocolate brown dress. Is this a hint of what’s tome come? Here is more….
Next Monday, we’re dancing the Viennese Waltz, and I have no idea what it is, so I guess I’ll find out today in rehearsals! The theme is prom night, which I’m excited about. We had a meeting with wardrobe about costumes, but it’s too soon to know what we’re wearing. I always like to help pick it out, but Mark and wardrobe have more of a say because they know what goes best with each dance.
I took my senior year off from high school to train for the Olympics, but I still got to go to my prom. I didn’t get to graduate with my classmates, I had to graduate early, but my prom was fun. It was just a way for me to be able to see my school friends because my social life was kind of on a hold last year because I was so focused on training for the Olympics. Going to prom was a way for me to have a break and a little bit of fun in between working out.
I wore a chocolate brown dress that had cap sleeves and some bronze-gold beading at the top. It was really simple. I loved it. I really like simple and elegant looks. That’s my thing. I do love hot pink, but for me, it’s more of a color for performing. I don’t have too many hot pink dresses, so I should probably get on that!
Mark is really sweet and funny — definitely the perfect prom date! He never got to go to prom because they don’t have prom in London [Mark moved to London as a child, where he attended the world-renowned Italia Conti Performing Arts School]. Hopefully this night will be very special for him!

So Aly and Lisa have V. waltz, Jacoby has rumba, Kellie has jive, Andy and Sean have cha cha, and Ingo has paso(!?). Some of those seem to work for prom better than others…what are TPTB doing? Any word on the dances that DL, Zendaya, Wynonna and Victor have?
There is a documentary about Aly and on one of the videos it shows her going to the prom. Her dress looked beautiful.
I hope it is ok for me to post it.
I don’t get this Prom Night theme at all. I don’t remember any couples dressed in Cha-Cha attire at my Prom.
No, but I remember back when I had my grad dance – which is what we called the equivalent to the American senior prom back in the day – we learned how to do the cha-cha and the waltz during our phys ed. classes so we’d be ready for the dance. Now this was in 1973, but still. *LOL* And we did those dances first – with our parents, as I remember – and then they had to leave and we got to party. Fond memories, really. And I suspect that’s why they’re using this as a theme. Don’t most people have fond memories of their proms?
Thanks for the video, her dress was really pretty.
I think Wynonna has Samba (!?!) and Victor has V.Waltz.
I’m having a really hard time figuring out how to make PD work for prom. It’s so aggressive, really, does anyone want their child to have a prom date that has aggression in it? I love the PD, but keep it OUT of sugar sweet week.
Oh boy, Wynonna possibly has Samba. Judging by her uberslow QS, I just can’t imagine her doing the Samba, and Victor may be in trouble with the V. Waltz, he needs a showstopper performance this week, and unfortunately, I just don’t see it happening.
Victor is actually doing Contemporary, which is even more worry some than the V.Waltz, not sure if it will be a good comeback dance for him and that sucks because I love victor, he is so sweet, I really want him to do well, but predicted it from week 1 if DL doesn’t go home it will be victor.
I would think a paso might have something to do with a couple arguing at the prom as often happens between hormonal teens!(LOL) Just like the jazz dances really stood out with creativity last week, I’m thinking this paso just might be the unexpected pleasant surprise of week 3. I’m hoping that it helps Ingo and Kym stand out as contenders, and break out of the middle of the pack.
I can only see Wynonna doing something like Kirstie Alley’s slow, oozing type of samba since she doesn’t appear to be able to move very well or fast enough. I’m also amazed that after how brutally honest the judges were with DL right from the beginning, they really seem to be cutting Wynonna way too much slack and shielding her from the truth.
Blonde, I hope you’re right about Ingo and Kym’s Paso helping them stand out from the others because they need to do something to get noticed. Hopefully their dance will be a nice change of pace from the sweetheart and party dances. It’s the one style that seems ill-suited to the “Prom Night” theme, but I absolutely can see Kym coming up with a story of a pair of fighting teens.
That’s kind of my worry though, the fighting teens. It’s a very dramatic dance but IF it’s about a real life scenario, it’s pretty violent. Doesn’t it usually end with someone being slayed and the other standing triumphant over them? I hope I have too simplistic of an idea about it, or too narrow of an idea about it. To me, it’s kind of disturbing to think of a prom date being that way. I think she’s going to have to find some fun playful thing about it or it’s going to be off putting.
Perhaps it’s not so much of the dance itself but rather the song they decided to use for their Paso. For example, I remember at the end of my prom they played “We Will Rock You” and everyone was pretty much rocking out and doing the knee-slap-clap thing to the beat of the song. And when i thought of this, Mya’s Paso came to mind. Or who knows, maybe they picked some other song that has to do with a prom or a party or whatever and they made it into a Paso for Ingo.
jess, you’re right, and I agree 100%. The traditional paso ending is the part that wouldn’t be appropriate for a prom date and that has me concerned. Kym would have to work out a different ending if she goes with the “fighting teens” story, one that doesn’t imply an abusive relationship. (Unfortunately, there’s a lot of that out there, but it’s the wrong tone to use for the prom night theme and would put people off). CC’s suggestion works better. We’ll find out on Monday 🙂
The other thing that bugs me about it is if they have to find a way to not make it about aggression then it’s also a waste of a chance to do a dance that I find to be beautiful and dramatic. Let it be in a week when they’re free to have it be symbolic like the woman representing the cape…let it be free to have all it’s aggressive glory. You’re right, we’ll find out on Monday, it’s a very good thing it’s in the hands of such an experienced pro.
