Watching Jacoby/Karina dance salsa steps to merengue rhythm was an abomination, watching the judges drool other this awkward, totally forced mutilation of the dance–one where el ritmo is everything–said everything about what a farce this show is. I love Latin dance, particularly salsa, and this was painful to see. There’s no way these judges didn’t recognize that the music for several of the dances was reduced to a non-syncopated, totally incorrect rhythm, yet they went full-tilt boogie in their exaggerated, fake praise. Obviously the pro’s couldn’t cram in teaching the rhythm as well as the steps to salsa, et al., in the time available, so they focused on the steps and ignored incorporating syncopation into the timing completely. You could do any dances steps to the simple rhythm of merengue, it would look equally ridiculous, while the judges would be raving about the great tango, waltz, paso doble, etc. Pathetic.
Timing and clave is the soul of Latin dance, and not one of these dancers had any relationship with the music–the result miserably bland and souless. Street dancers with flabby abs and less than celebrity looks could dance rings around these guys by simply being on time, whether on 1 or 2, being one with the music–not even possible when the dance is a merengue and you’re forcing salsa steps to fit, like a size 10 into a size 5 shoe….
Given that salsa rhythm is similar to mambo, when danced on the 2, there’s no way these judges didn’t know how fake this was, they just think their audience is a bunch of idiots–and they’re likely correct on that 🙂 I had stopped watching this after the first few seasons, as it became more and more ridiculous, but turned it on to catch some salsa–and not one the entire evening. So much for Latin Night Music.
This show must be getting really desperate to keep an audience. What an embarrassment to be associated with it.
Kate, your post is perfect to be directly at Shirley Ballas–she was just a guest on the afterbuzz show. I wish you could’ve gotten through to her to ask. I would love to hear her opinion. She tells it like it is.
