New “Switch-Up Challenge” Dance On DWTS17 Week 6, Ariana Grande And Mika To Perform
ABC MediaNet has issued a new press release for Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 6! This week Ariana Grande and Mika will perform their hit duet “Popular” . Also note how not only will the couples being dancing a new individual dance, but, they will also take part in a new “SWITCH-UP CHALLENGE”!!! Details below. Sounds interesting, but, HARD!! What do you think?
Episode 1706” – Eight remaining couples hit the dance floor and face an exciting new challenge on “Dancing with the Stars,” MONDAY, OCTOBER 21 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET). Each couple will compete in an individual dance style they have not yet done as well as take part in the first ever “Switch-Up Challenge.” In this fresh take on a dance marathon, couples will compete side by side, in two rounds, with no prior knowledge of dance style or musical accompaniment. One by one, the judges will select couples to be tapped-off/removed from the dance floor. Extra judges’ points will be awarded to couples based on longevity. The show will also feature a spectacular opening number with the entire cast, choreographed by Lacey and Benji Schwimmer. Additionally, musical guest Ariana Grande and Mika will perform their hit duet “Popular.” At the end of the night, one couple will face elimination.
So that was clear as mud. What makes this new challenge a “switch-up”? That it’s in two rounds? That the couples won’t know the music or dance style? It sounds a little like a combination of a marathon and the instant dances (the version where they have to prepare more than one style).
@Butterfly, you took the words off my keyboard! 🙂
I think TPTB are very good at making the waters even muddier, so that they think we don’t know what they’re doing!
Not understanding this switch-up thing so much.. guess we’ll have to wait and see what the heck it’s all about on Monday.
Love Ariana Grande. So excited for that performance on Monday. Love the song as well. I am a happy camper. 🙂
In the Switch-Up Challenge what if couples haven’t done whatever dance style is chosen? For example Bill and Corbin have not done the cha cha yet and Nicole hasn’t done Samba. It doesn’t seem fair that they would have to dance it on the spot.
Mel, Corbin hasn’t done any Latin dances except of Jive.
Isn’t the paso doble a Latin dance? I thought it was probably Corbin’ s best dance.
Good question Mel!! I imagine their pros will have to teach them a little bit of the other dances they haven’t had yet??
Sounds like a way to pad some scores enough to save/get rid of someone. I love when they are so vague it gives the impression they can make it up as they go along.
Not looking forward to the “fresh ta take on dance marathon”. This is where we shall see which couples are the judges favorites.
Oops hit the submit button too soon. Should say “fresh take on a dance marathon”.
Well if I’m understanding this correctly, it seems very much like last seasons challenge where the top scoring couples picked the other couple they wanted to dance either a Jive, Cha Cha or I think Samba against. Only in Marathon form. And with all the couples on the floor at once.
Sounds crazy and also a little fun. I just hope it doesn’t hurt Bill.
I think it sounds fun too. I have always loved the Marathon dances.
I don’t mind the marathon dances but I don’t like that they don’t get to know ahead of time to prepare anything. It absolutely favors those with dance experience and musicality. Maybe that’s the point, to give padding to the better dancers. IBLWR
I remember before week 8 of season 11, Mark told an interviewer about the instant dance and that they don’t get the exact music, but he 2-3 songs that where of “similar beats” to what they would select from. Bristol had confirmed on a radio show that when they “selected” their instant dance music during the show, they were thrilled because Mark said it was practically the same exact beat as what he had her practice to.
Because of that and the incident when Melissa picked samba “out of a bag” of mini mirror balls during all stars and Tom kinds made a fumble opening them up, I think nothing is really ever “unknown” to the pros. JMHO 🙂
Yes of course they prepare even though they don’t know the style. It just makes it harder because they have to prepare multiple styles rather than just one. They’re probably giving them a list of possible styles it will be, rather than saying it could be ANY dance style. Only certain styles will work well for a marathon dance anyway.
I love “Popular Song”! Can’t wait to see Mika & Ariana perform it!
So this the part of the season when the show is taken over by the judges to make sure they get the final they want. So Corbin, Amber, and Liz will be in the top 3. They want the final shows to be down to those 3, so if those 3 are not the ones you want your season is pretty much over lol. It happens every year, I can not stand when they do this. The show is really no longer in the viewer hands, for the rest of the year. Darn it
I don’t think Len wants Amber up there, Lisa. You may get what you want. 🙂
Well I think they want Corbin and Liz in the final 3, so if they don’t want Amber wonder who their third choice will be? Because I have no doubt they will manipulate and manipulate no matter how bad or sloppy it looks to have it their way instead of the viewers way.
I think this challenge sounds cheesy, messy and if people tune in to see a dancing show there is plenty of bad dancing with just an instant dance or a msrathon—combining them just sounds like mayhem.
They are schlocking up this show too much. I understand some freshening up but lots of the time with only the one rushed night etc it just seems more and more like chaos. And I miss the results shows. If they don’t want production costs for 2 nights maybe they could do an hour and a half. For Chris-sakes they have an Emmy winning choreographer I want to see some more GREAT routines and production numbers from him. They should promote that fact more and take advantage while they have him to let him work his magic for them. My gosh I saw Davis and White’s ice dancing routine he choreographed for them today. It was impeccable and you could practically “see Derek Hough” in it. Like other people, he is one of the main reasons I still watch DWTS
I found myself thinking, ‘What if Derek was paired with Snooki”? I don’t know why lol.
