Details For Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 7, No Double Elimination
According to BroadwayWorld.com there will be no double elimination next week on Dancing With The Stars like many feared. Below are more dance details on the night. Thanks to @DWTSgossip for the heads up on this news.
The competition continues as eight remaining celebrities perform two new routines on “Dancing with the Stars,” MONDAY, OCTOBER 28 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET). The night will begin with a spectacular opening number choreographed by Emmy Nominated choreographer, Mandy Moore. The competition will then be split into two rounds. In the first round, each couple will take on a dance style they have not previously performed including the Salsa, Quickstep, Samba, Cha Cha, Paso Doble, and Jive. In the second round, the cast will dance together in two separate teams, with each couple having a featured solo. At the end of the night, one couple will face elimination.
yay! there is hope that bill could possibly survive if either leah or jack leave.
I guess there will also have to be double in upcoming weeks. (maybe 2, depending how many couples in the finale)
Does this mean the finals will have 4 couples like last season?
Yay!! There is still hope for Bill. I think Bill is popular with the votes/viewers and the producers know it. Maybe they are not quite ready to let their dancing Redneck ride off into the sunset just yet.
But does this help Bill & Emma much? I certainly hope so! But I’ll await the enlightening predictions and the numbers post before I pin too much hope on my beloved couple staying beyond “one more week”, as their compatriots chanted in the group hug.
May I just remind everyone, yet again, that Nobody Ever said that was the Bottom Two. They just read names off, Tom never said “And the Bottom Two Are.” It was just assumed.

Yes, of course that is true! And last week, I believe the order couples were called safe was based on the judges scores, wasn’t it? However, Bill has been consistently amongst the lowest scores rather than only occasionally like Leah and Corbin. And because of the fact that DWTS doesn’t reveal who is actually pulling in the least total scores/votes, we need to guestimate about the voting.
Princess Heidi’s detailed By the Numbers posts explain well how many votes need to be garnered to overcome poor scores and stay in the competition. From what we’ve observed all season, Bill & Emma likely won’t score high for their Quickstep next week and it’s expected they are on the losing Team for the second portion of the night. While I know all of my piddly votes go to Bill & Emma, I can only hope they garner enough votes to surpass the nearest competitor, who is likely Jack & Cheryl rather than Team Whiny.

I think/am hoping that if the scores are so inflated for the “favored” dancers, Bill and Emma are really pulling in the votes.

I’m also hoping that Bill and Emma are pulling in the votes. As Cher says, no bottom two was announced. It seems that at some point they’ll have to have a double elimination, but maybe if they keep putting it off, Bill will be able to survive to the semi-finals. I’d like him to. 🙂
Bill seems to belong to that group of contestants (mostly/all guys) like Ty Murray, Jerry Springer, Billy Ray Cyrus, etc. who weren’t the greatest dancers, but who people apparently fell in love with and who survived far past what people predicted. And Bill dances better than any of them (at least the ones I mentioned – trying to remember others in that category, and can’t at the moment). Of course, with all the shenanigans TPTB pull now, I’m not sure if staying until top 4 or 5 is still possible for that kind of contestant.
While I’m happy that there will be no double elimination next week and that Bill has at least another week to dance, I’m still worried for him. He has Quickstep and it isn’t an easy dance. I’m pretty sure Emma will be able to teach him well and choreograph a routine that suits him. I just hope they won’t get screwed again with a crappy song so that the judges will find a “legit” reason to score them so low.
Know what? I’m at the point where I don’t give a furry Rat’s badonky donk what the judges think anymore. Bill and Emma entertain me. They make me like this show even when the judges do stupid crapola like what they did to Amber, because face it, they ain’t judging Amber. I know people think he is the weakest dancer but in reality look at the others. Look at their stop and go habits. Look at their wobbly feet.
Do I think he could win? In reality no but there is a small glimmer of hope that one time the voters can give TPTB a really good middle finger and get him through and SHOW THEM that their agenda isn’t going to cut it with us. They did it last year when Kellie won but they REALLY NEED A GOOD F YOU contestant to win.
Is he the best dancer on the show? No. But dammit his attitude alone should get him through a few more weeks because it has been a LONG time since we got a “I know this is Bull Shit and You Are out to GET me but I’m going to Enjoy Myself and have FUN while I’m here” attitude from a contestant.
Look at that Tango. Listen to the song. How many people do you know that has been on the show that can take a song like that GIVEN TO THEM and THEN BE CRTICIZED FOR IT and actually pull off an entertaining and respectable Tango with only TWO slight missteps? And to top it off NOT GIVE A SORRY ASS EXCUSE FOR THEIR MISTAKES.
Even poor Andy last season by the time he got kicked off, and HE WAS BRUTALLY KICKED OFF and HUMILIATED in the way they did it, was down in spirits.
You have producers telling judges HOW TO judge and if you think they aren’t then you are in LA LA LAND. You have judges overscoring people when they stumble over there feet more than once, twice, three times. You have a team of producers that say “I know the whole “I’m not a dancer” line isn’t sticking so let’s get J LO to come say it because then IT MUST BE TRUE.”
Then you have Len and Derek. Screw Amber. She’s just an afterthought to them. She got an “Oh, I think you are a lovely Dancer.” Then her PRO got judged, NOT HER.
People want to talk about the inconsistency MAKS got over the years. BULL SHIT. That is nothing compared to the SHIT Derek gets from Len. BUT Len says it SO IT MUST BE TRUE.
People want to talk about what this show is really about, (which gets on PH’s Nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard and I understand why) then stop being Negative Ninny Debbie Downer Doubting Thomas’s put your vote where your mouth is

No double elimination next week Is great news! Kinda still think that Leah or Jack are going home next week. Despite not loving Bill’s dance, I think he is turning into quite the dancer and will last at least three two or three more weeks.
Sidenote, you guys should check this out. Someone is campaigning for next season already. And it’s actually not a bad choice for the show either.

I don’t think ANYONE has gotten critique like Derek and Amber – well, really Derek – have gotten the last two weeks. It’s never been that blatant before. Maks fans complaining that we never said anything when it was Maks – that’s bullshit too. We did say something, but them Maks went and acted the ass to the point that you could NOT feel sorry for him. Exhibit A: Len/CAI/Bruno harshing on Hope to the point where I felt sorry for both of them and said so on twitter, calling the judges out…then 15 seconds later Maks is acting like an ass in the skybox and I got over it real quick. Therein lies the difference.
I like the #IfLeahDoesntLeaveWeRiot campaign so much that I’m going to try and find my long lost twitter password.
I’m also open to learning about power voting so that I can spend more “love” on Bill & Emma!

Heidi, NOBODY has gotten treated like Derek and Amber have been treated this last week. It is not only ridiculous but pathetic on Len’s part and on the part of the producer’s for allowing it. Derek is too much of a true gentleman to EVER act the ass.
I have been holding that post in since Monday, felt kind of good to finally get it out.

I was watching old dances the other day, and it came roaring back at me how cruel they’ve been to Karina’s partners – not so much herself, but how badly they treated Ralph, how overly-critical they were of Apolo, and even how Len made Aaron Carter cry (he WAS a sensitive lad, though). I could go on and on – but I see them pulling the crap they pull on Derek with her partners, just not to the same degree. I wonder if that’s their way of “leveling the playing field” with regards to her talents (as she is the only one in Derek’s league).
I completely agree with figamentation! The judges have been really rude to karina’s partners as well as derek’s. That time Bruno called her a p***** was ridiculous. Also, I still can’t believe that her and corbin aren’t in the top 2 for the season in terms of judges points because their level of dancing has been incredible. So while I hate it when derek and his partner get picked on… i don’t think he is the only pro.
As far as next week’s elimination goes, I’m wondering if the eliminated couple will have to come from the losing team.
If I recall correctly they have done that in the past.
This would make me elated if it was Leah, and severely bummed if it was Bill.

Our point is that DEREK is being JUDGED and NOT AMBER. If they were going hard on AMBER that is one thing because they are supposed to be judging the CELEBRITY NOT the PRO. When Len gives the an 8 because of Derek and then says “Oh, and Amber I think you’re a lovely dancer but DEREK had too much repetiveness in your routine but YOU nailed it.”
Totally different than going hard on the celeb.
Basically Len is worried about the wrong damn thing.
I wonder if Len would ever dare to say TO Karina the stuff he’s said to Derek. Wonder if he’s just that gutless. He can pick on another man, but not a woman.
I don’t 100% agree that the choreo shouldn’t be judged at all. Not denying that Len was and a**, but I think that it’s legitimate to expect to have the “team” be judged. If someone doesn’t give their partner challenging enough choreo, or it’s boring…it affects the entertainment value and performance. If a pro gives the celeb too hard of choreo and they drag their celeb around the room…lots of examples of how the 2 should work as a team and that includes choreo.
Maybe back in the day when it was more straight ballroom, pretty unexciting after a while, maybe it was just about the teaching and then celeb performance. But as the show has evolved into an entertainment spectacular, I’m not sure you can divorce the evaluation of the pro from the celeb, else what’s to stop them from just giving boring choreo, or from doing something not at all related to the dance assigned…
This is one of the ways I think Derek does it exactly right, he includes his celeb in the decision making, presents what he feels is choreo true to the music and to their strengths, but then informs them if he thinks a judge (Len) won’t like it and they decide together if they want to take the risk.
To me, it’s a separate issue from the extreme inconsistency in the judging, or the meanness.
Corbin and Karina would be at the top in cumulative score if not for the 23 they got last week. Right now it’s Liz with 157, Amber with 156 and Corbin with 154. If he had done a more “traditional” dance and gotten even a 27, he would be in first place. Likewise, if Len hadn’t fucked Amber over 2 weeks in a row it would be Corbin and Amber fighting it out for the top spot. It only took that ONE dance to knock Corbin out of the top two – and that was by their choice. That’s the thing about doing risky stuff – you have to KNOW that you’re going to get hosed. Derek knows it and his fans know it. What Karina hasn’t had happen this season, is to do a dance with all the required elements, no frippery and STILL get hosed. That actually happened to Derek twice in a row.
There is a huge difference between doing a dance that you know breaks a lot of rules, going for the audience vote and getting a low score from the judges – and I obviously have no problem with pros doing that as it got Derek an Emmy and a whole slate of amazing dances – and a dance that is perfectly “normal” with all the syllabus steps and STILL getting totally hosed. Don’t start equating rule breaking, low scored dances with traditional dances that get hosed for no good reason.

No, susan, they have NEVER done that. It just, most of the time, works out that way. I doubt they would do that (unless they already know who is going to be eliminated and they know that team is going to lose) because it would invalidate ALL the voting from this past week.
I would agree with Jess – you should be judging the choreo to some extent and it IS a different issue from what Len did this past week. To boil it down – he said Amber was a fantastic dancer and gave her a 8 because he felt the choreo was too repetitive one week AFTER saying the dance wasn’t in hold enough, and giving her a 7. Classic damned if you do, damned if you don’t. He then turns around and gives other dances lacking in content and hold 9s, gives Tony a “warning” about breaking hold yet gives them a 9.
It is one set of rules for Derek (and the rule book is written in magically changing ink) and another set of rules for everyone else – and it’s much more blatant this season. He seems to be judging nothing BUT the choreo (there’s no “team” aspect of choreo/execution) in Derek’s case. And while they may or may not be valid judgments – they’re not the same judgments he gives to other couples even on the same night.

I think there is no question that Len was out of line and plain ornery with his reasoning for knocking Derek down 2 weeks in a row. In fact, Len cast several strange votes last week which make the 8 he gave to Amber & Derek especially aggravating.
But Jess made salient points about the fact that DWTS is in the entertainment business and this contest pits 2 person teams against one another. Both the pros and the celebs have fan bases that attract or repel voters, the actions and reactions of both are televised and both receive the mirror ball trophy if they win.
And there could be a separate discussion of the capriciousness of Bruno and CAI’s voting record as well. Fortunately for Amber & Derek, I have never doubted that they are raking in the votes, probably more since Len is perceived to have it in for that team. And I expect Len won’t be able to pull a bone headed move like he did the last 2 weeks again. In my eyes, he didn’t underscore Team Roughly much. It was what he scored them vs. high scores for others that made the controversy unlike say the shocking score he gave Derek’s team Paso last season. Scores aren’t cumulative on DWTS and it’s more important that Len behave somewhat rationally later in the season when there are fewer teams.
The scores might not be cumulative but the effect of the comments can be. What the judges say about a couple does have a certain resonance with viewers. Low-ball scores and negative criticism from Len at this point in the season can’t always be reversed by high scores and praise from him in the semi-finals and finale. By then a lot of viewers have used his earlier assessment of a couple to form their opinions and might not be willing or able to switch gears.
Corbin should have gotten the first 30 for his paso in my opinion. I think Elizabeth is Len’s favourite. The way she moves her body does not suggest that she “hasn’t danced in a long long time” so she should be judged the way Corbin is being judged. I don’t think Elizabeth is being propped, I think Val is.
I agree Mishi 100%. Elizabeth is a dancer but IMO not as skilled as Corbin. Val is being propped. Len has revealed his bias openly when Karina won, he said on air he thought one of the other pros should have a chance to win now in reference to Derek. In his mind, this year it is Val, who alone is a fine champion, technically sound dancer which appeals to him. He is forgetting this is about the celeb and it is their 1st and ONLY chance to win. The facts are obvious. Derek is in a league by himself on every level – choreo, teaching, playing game, as a powerhouse performer, emphasizing strengths and hiding weakness, the therapist head game aspect, pushing / motivating and technically teaching non dancers like Kelly and Brook to uncover natural talent, models like Joanna, heavier celebs like Ricki, old celebs with pins, doctor instructions galore, breaking bodies that are older that were NOT dancers but simply with pure natural, genetic ability like Jennifer and make them all shine. He is doing something right professionally and personally as all his partners love him. There is a reason his partners do well – don’t penalize them. Len judge the dancing fairly on all levels and quit holding Derek to a higher, hypocritical standard that you set in your mind ( not based on any formal set of rules), because you think he has had too much success. Judge fairly and let the chips fall where they may. That is America. Hard work us rewarded, we want to be entertained and let the best/mist entertaining couple win ir lise on their own. Derek is the talented, genius that was brought up to respect his elders so he has NEVER shown you the professional and personal disrespect that other dancers ( Maks for one) have shown but you are not in his class of human being. He is a celebrated, gift to this show and you are trying to influence America to think he is a rule breaking pro with sub standard choreo when dancing professionals awarded him with 5 nominations and 1 Emmy win and gave so much respect fir him. Stop your petty agenda. You have lost all my respect. You have done similar things to Karina but not to the same degree. Your comments are parroted as facts in 90% of media about show , so there is a detrimental cumulative affect. Judge all the same, and your words will be seen as wisdom and respected. You are 69 , maybe too old to commute, I think now is the time to retire because you are no longer objective.

Could it be that Len is trying to regain power in his relationship with Derek? I think nowadays Derek has proved that he can make bold choices in choreography and, despite Len’s low scores and harsh comments, get the fans to vote to keep him and his partner in the competition. So, even underscoring Derek, Len wouldn’t get rid of him. And when Derek feels he can’t risk those choices, he choreographs a dance following the rules strictly so Len is forced to give a 9 or a 10. I guess Len feels trapped: he either gives bad scores and get all the hate, or gives excellent scores because he can’t really do otherwise whenever Derek chooses to please him. I think Len is trying to show Derek that in the future this will not happen again; that is, even if he choreographs to his tastes, Len will nitpick if he pleases, in order to make Derek not feel so secure of the outcome. This may be a bit far-fetched, but when Derek told Len that he had done that samba for him I felt he was feeling frustrated because he couldn’t get Len’s 10 like he did with Kellie’s quickstep in week 6 last season.
Anyway, I am 100% in Derek and Amber’s corner, and think Len’s attitude was not worthy of a respectable judge.
Interesting comments about Val. Cuz he was mighty ticked off last year. So you think he is going to be propped up to get it? What about voters not voting? Do we not control it to a point? Should be interesting. I think Val is aware of this as he sure has picked up his interest in the season this week.
It is beyond ridiculous that Len has been allowed to turn the show into a psychodrama about the father resenting being outdone by the son. This is not Dr. Phil, and Len has not been cast as a protagonist of any sort — probably much to his dismay. He is a judge on a television show, and his job is to evaluate the dancing of (non-dancer) celebrities, and give constructive criticism aimed at helping the celebrity improve. That’s it. The man is turning into a caricature of himself. As he raised his ’10’ paddle for Brant he said, “I just can’t help myself.” If indeed he’s devolved to the point where he is no longer in control of himself, he needs to go. If he can’t keep his focus on the celebrity, he needs to go. If he can’t get over himself enough to judge fairly, he needs to go.
Val does seem a bit condescending to me, and I think he should bear in mind that the way to the trophy is to make his partner shine and to make people feel the connection between both. If he can’t find a connection to Elizabeth, who has a great body and previous dance experience, how will he manage when he has, for example, a severely injured partner. That’s why I always love Derek and his partners and why now I enjoy Bill and Emma so much.
I realize that there’s a difference between the way Len attacks Derek’s partnerships and Karina’s – hence why I said it’s different, however there still seems to be a bit of an agenda there in both cases, regardless of the approach. Both pros are obviously worth the trouble, as they produce wonderful dances – but all the judges, particularly Len, are harsher on both pros and their partners than the other couples (for the most part). Just in general, it is with Derek he’s hard on him, and with Karina they are hard on her partners (but sometimes it’s both Derek/Karina and the celeb).
I think regardless of who is on the receiving end, it sucks – even when the scores are good, the comments resonate with viewers (as wrong as that might be). But honestly I think Karina’s partners have it a little worse, only because at least with Derek the viewer is informed that it’s *his fault* (eyeroll). But with Karina’s partners they are picked apart and can’t blame the choreography, but rather it reflects worse on them and don’t have a pro partner to hide behind.
Anyway, it’s just another way to look at this. It’s crappy and I don’t like it, but it doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the performances and the partnerships of two of my favorite pros.
Len can only regain power if Derek gives up power – and Derek doesn’t do that. He has all the power because he lets it roll off. Unlike some.
As for Val being propped – I don’t think the producers care in the least which pro wins. They care about people who bring viewers sticking around as long as possible so their ratings stay up. They might care a smidge about good dancers sticking to the end because it gives the show a shred of credibility – but they don’t care who actually wins, just that the right people make it to the end.
The judges are a different story – they might have someone they would prefer to win and they might want dancers to last a long time for that credibility factor. But beside all that, they want to be RIGHT too – so if someone is getting a ton of votes, long about week 8 they will start getting better scores too, so if they should happen to win, the judges can point to them and say, “See, I knew what I was doing.”

I agree completely with you, Figmentation, on your comments about Karina and the judges. They have always been unduly harsh on her partners, I’ve gotten the distinct feeling they never wanted her to win. They tried doing it to JR at the beginning of the season but finally had to stop because he was so overwhelming popular with the audience (and was a war hero and all that) and it just wouldn’t fly. Otherwise, they would have continued with him as well. I believed it was because many viewers didn’t like her in earlier seasons, and the show didn’t want her to win because of that. She’s much more popular now, but they still do it to her so I don’t know why. But it’s happened too many times not to be calculated. At least they no longer give her the crap partner year after year as they used to. That’s improved, at least.
I basically completely agree with what you said Heidi, except that I don’t really feel the producers tell the judges what results they want. Or really that the producers want a specific result at all, other than ratings. So they by default want the most popular or attention-getting divisive people to stay around. They can *guess* at who the most popular people will be, but they are often wrong (being for a large part British and Australian, they may not have a great idea of who is popular here). The example I keep using is that they were so SURE that the Hoff would be a huge hit, they were extremely shocked that he was kicked off first.
This is also why despite what most of you seem to think, I don’t believe the producers manipulate who stays and who goes – because it would be counterproductive. The people who are getting the most votes should be the people who stay because they have a passionate audience who loves them and they’re bringing in viewers, and the producers wouldn’t want to get rid of them.
The judges are another story – they have their favorites, they want the “best” dancers to stay. So of course they have an agenda. Although their favorites can change over the season.
So feel free to have your conspiracy theories, but try to remember that the person with the most knowledge of the inner workings of DWTS doesn’t believe in them. 🙂
Like I was telling someone else, the “most votes” theory only really works if a ton of people are voting. If the show is watched by 13 million people, but they only get 3 to 5 million votes every week?? Then basing who’s bringing in the viewers based on votes might not be all that accurate. If the majority of the people who watch the show don’t vote at all, then who’s to say who’s the most popular? I think they have to have more metrics than that – like viewer impressions and such.
And I don’t think there is such a direct correlation between votes and popularity with viewers. There often hasn’t been in the past. You often see younger contestants with TONS of twitter followers get voted out earlier than people with few twitter followers, simply because the youngsters don’t vote. If a celeb’s audience is of the group less inclined to vote, then they could get voted out early, despite having a huge fanbase. The most obvious example is the youngsters that have millions of teen and tween followers who vote, but don’t watch the show, or vice versa – will watch to see their fav but not vote.
All due respect to your knowledge of the inner workings and all – but do you think they would let their agenda be common knowledge among the ranks?? I work in a small company (less than 40 people) that does a great business, I’m fairly high up in the ranks and I’m good friends with the owner – but I don’t know what the plan is half the time. That’s just the way it works – there often is no memo. I have friends who work in show business and it always makes me chuckle when they act like I couldn’t possibly know “how it works” when from what I’ve seen it works like any other business.
If there is no double elimination on week 7, that would leave 7 couples for week 8. If they have two dances each, how will they manage to show 14 dances in less than two hours? They would be even shorter than on All Stars week 8. I really don’t see the point of making the couples learn two really short dances.
