DWTS Season 17, Week 8 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??
Looks to me like everyone has the potential to have a great week, with the possible exceptions of Amber and Jack. I guess we’ll see. I also seriously doubt that Leah will do a great or even interesting V. Waltz – but she’ll get great scores regardless.
I’m hoping for something really interesting, like Val being a jackass and deciding he has to “pick on someone his own size” in the dance off and choosing someone who beats him. 🙂
We know, thanks to loose lips Witney, that the opening dance is to “Believe” by Cher ( ) – that ought to be good. But Derek and Amber’s song? A Rumba? So hosed. Wonder if he re-arranged it like the Madonna song he did with Maria. Wonder who else is getting hosed?
ETA Vogue here: Apparently an email has been sent out by ABC (to those who subscribe) that there will be a “elimination shocker” tonight. You can see a pictures of it here courtesy of @@jahfan1. Discuss in comments. ADDING: below is a full screen shot of the email thanks to PureDWTS reader Leslie. Click on the pic to make bigger.

The Dance off….Who knows what the hell will happen here.
…ok, kinda confused as to why Elizabeth and Val have jazz. Didn’t they already have contemporary?
I’m so pissed they have to do all songs by Cher this week. Yes, let’s have Karina in a broadway production this summer getting great ideas about an AT and then have to fit it to a Cher song. SMH … Not that I dislike Cher. But of all seasons to see Karina choreograph and AT, this is the one season I was looking forward to a traditional song foa her AT.
Can’t wait for the show tomorrow.
@MNBonnie – I agree. Corbin has the potential to do an incredible AT with his skill and Karina’s now background from this summer. It’s a shame they can’t get a traditional AT song but I have faith in them.
I’m going to guess that either Jack or Bill go first and Elizabeth will go last. By then they’ll know where everyone else stands and if they need to up her score to save her. They also went first last week so makes sense they go in the latter part of the show.
Really pumped for Bill’s Disco!
Blah… Still upset Snooki won’t be dancing tomorrow night 🙁 I am looking forward to some of these dances though (Bill + Disco = FunFunFunFun) . My score predictions:
Corbin & Karina: 30 (Dude can do anything…)
Elizabeth & Val: 30 (Pretty obvious)
Beant & Peta: 28 or 29 (I am leaning towards him doing Foxtrot and he is quite good at ballroom so, this could be good for him)
Amber & Derek: 27 (I am hoping they surprise everyone and nail it, though)
Jack & Cheryl: 27
Leah AKA Yuck & Tony AKA Yuckier: 27
Bill & Emma: 25 (I see Cher being generous and giving him a 9… or CarrieAnn)
I really am hoping Leah goes home this week. If she doesn’t, the little excitement I have for the rest of the season will go WAY down. A part of me (and I hope it is wrong) thinks Bill may go home. I feel like they gave Bill a dance he can do well in to set him up for an elimination where he goes out on a high note. Here’s hoping I am way wrong and Leah finally gets the boot.
I’m with you on this, CC. Hope Leah gets the boot!
I agree with MNBonnie. It really hit home to me last season when everyone had to dance to a Stevie Wonder song. It is just wrong for the couples to have to perform to songs that are so unsupportive of the dances. I also don’t think it’s going to do much for Cher to see some of the dance/song match-ups. Just dumb all the way around.
elizabeth/val-4th
Why is this season a week longer than usual, because of the new format?
I have always loved the song “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves”. Everytime I hear that song I can’t get it out of my mind. I am singing it right now. 🙂
And Cher will be performing a second song on Monday night.. “I Hope You Find It”. So if anyone is familiar with that song it can be scratched off the list of potential available songs.
I agree Amber & Derek’s song – indeed “hosed” – a rhumba?
Will be interesting to see what Mr. Choreographer pulls out of his sleeve.
I’m also on board with you CC. Time for Leah to say goodbye.
I’m trying not to be a negative nancy, but I hate these theme weeks. Even if it was a broader range of songs to choose from I wouldn’t be so annoyed. But just one artist? Ugh. I’m just hoping we can give Leah her little send off and move everyone else onto next week.
CC DITTO especially on Leah and Tony! I am also hoping Amber and Derek get a 30 too. Derek often brings it in his most “hosed” (Heidi’s word, not mine. but, it’s so fitting. lol) moments. I hope he socks it to them again for even thinking about it.
Yes, Sara, they did – but it’s apparently okay that she gets two dances that work very well toward her strength and training.
In other news, dumb ass Val/Maks fans on twitter implying Derek’s back injury is faked. Yeah…let’s try to distract people from the fact that Val has a ringer dancing IN HER STYLE this week. :::rolls eyes:::
Even if it wasn’t Cher week, there is no guarantee they would have gotten traditional AT music.
Cher has been very vocal in stating that she never listens to her own music (or that she doesn’t like her music, or that she doesn’t like her voice), so having her judge 10 dances to her own music will probably be torture for her…
Does anyone know WHO decides which of the zillion Cher songs will be used and why when there are so many good for a rumba they would give that one to Amber. And I agree with whoever was pissed abt their favorite getting caught up in one of these theme weeks and having to do a not as good dance because of it. I think producers should have veto power and some input, but I think the pros should be the ones picking the music. And some songs can be slowed effectively but if I remember this one, it just sounds”draggy” if you try to slow it down.
On another note, I think Bill’s disco could be awesome. And I just want Leah and Elizabeth, mostly bec of Val, gone. Mad that Snooki is gone before Leah.
Problem is, they have to get permission to alter the songs just as much as they have to get permission to use them. For example, Derek was allowed to re-arrange the Madonna song…but would Cher be so inclined? Does she even own the song or does the writer?? If they have to do a rumba at that tempo?? Damn good thing Len isn’t around.
@MNBonnie I did a little search on the internet of Cher and Tango and I got the song she sang in movie Burlesque. And also Karina mentioned that their number involves Burlesque. I’d be surprised if its not that song. I think its would a great song for them to dance A. Tango. There is also a video of a couple dancing A. Tango to the song on youtube. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Good grief what a crappy song to use for a Rumba.
And yep, ever since they introduced Jazz and Contemporary as new dance styles, you either got one or the other during the season, never both until now. It stinks.
The Leah and Tony V.Waltz will be a mind-numbingly, boring snore-fest with hardly any rotation or changes of speed, yet it will win raves. Grr!
Val/Maks will use any excuse they can get to make someone, especially Derek, look bad with the hopes of making themselves look good. I have no respect for either of them. Val has a huge ringer, their dance is what she’s been trained in, and he’s still so insecure that he has to bad mouth Derek. So sad.
Am I the only one who thinks If I Could Turn Back Time works for a rumba? I feel the slow, sensual, passionate vibe from it.
I just don’t understand Val and Tony do they not understand that good things come to good people and i know for damn sure there parents taught them treat others the way you would want to be treated like come on ….I love Derek I’m not going to lie but I do admit when others are good on DWTS but when you act like you own the place and your better then everyone else then what Derek in my Opinion is the best but he doesn’t walk around saying he has a Emmy and 4 Mirror balls but let Val and Tony win (Tony Never won not in my eyes lol) you wouldn’t hear thing end of it i’m just saying and yes i believe that Derek is the golden boy of dwts he’s the only reason I watch the show in the first place if it wasn’t for him they wouldn’t have a Emmy that’s all I have to say 😉
I knew it. As soon as I heard that they were going to be dancing to Cher songs, I knew Amber and Derek would get “If I Could Turn Back Time” for their rumba.
Mel, that’s right! Oh, I really hope that is it. 🙂 Thanks for reminding me. Not as worried now. (Of course it would still be good – Karina is a fabulous choreographer. Hoping song works for them). 🙂
I think Karina mentioned in an interview that they are dancing to a BURLESQUE song. My guess would be WELCOME TO BURLESQUE.
What has Val said now? Can’t he keep his foot from going in his mouth? Funny bc those Val fans seem to forget how much his partner is being propped and getting a dance she trained in? Both contemporary and jazz when in the past, celebs only get one of those two styles? Val has two years in a row where his partners get a genre where they can teach Val. Derek has never had that.
So, Elizabeth and Val get both Contemporary and Jazz while Amber and Derek get neither. Not cool at all.
It’s a very fast song, though, Cameron. There’s nothing slow about it, unless Derek intentionally slows it down and you have to get permission to do that.
# Lana, I hope so , it’s a great song for tango.
Heidi, why do they always challenge derek w this bs. Im sure they will do great. The only good thing is that len isnt there. I mean god forbid he gets an appropriate song!
I don’t think Tony or Val understand the concept of just because you win, doesn’t mean you win and just because you lost doesn’t mean you didn’t win anything. Sometimes it is about more than a Mirror Ball Trophy. But it is nice to have 1 or two or four. 🙂
Yet another thing about Leah and Tony that bothers me. She isn’t getting anything from this and in the end it is her loss, more so than a trophy.
Val is the type at times that means well but the execution of his actions are not meant or taken well. Tony Val and Maks sometimes forget actions and reactions speak louder than words. And it is not always about them.
I feel like if they would concentrate more on making this a true experience for their celeb than about winning a trophy then they would come off more as winners. If you have fun, have a good time, relax and let go…everything else will just fall into place.
I think that makes sense, it made sense in my head.
Happy Dancing Monday all, good luck to you and your couples. 🙂
I’m sure Derek will do just fine with the Rumba, and will end up winning the immunity.
The rest should be interesting.
I love that movie. You can see Julianne and Tyne dancing alongside Cher.
My guesses on scores:
Corbin and Karina: (10,9,10) 29
Jack and Cheryl (9,9,9) 27
Leah and Tony (9,8,9) 26
Elizabeth and Val (10,9,10) 29
Brant and Peta (10,9,10) 29 I have a feeling this one is going to be really good
Derek and Amber: (10,10,10) 30
Bill and Emma: (8,8,8) 24
Leah has improved greatly and I loved her salsa last week. Corbin is surprisingly coming off as arrogant.
Best of luck to the couples tonight, and best of luck to Cher. I can’t wait to see how she does as a judge tonight.
I’m looking forward to Bill and Emma’s disco fun-fest, Corbin and Karina’s AT, Derek and Amber’s rumba, and Cher’s performances. For the rest of the show, my finger will be hovering over or holding down the fast-forward button.
I do wonder how Cher feels about having to sit next to and be polite to Bruno — the guy who called her son a dancing ewok and a penguin.
Corbin comes off as arrogant? I don’t get that when I watch him. I always think he is just so driven to win this thing that he may not be enjoying the experience as a whole. That’s just my opinion though.
I’m a little leary about watching Amber attempt a Rhumba, and especially with that music selection. I wonder if TPTB assigned that music to throw Derek a curve ball. But if anyone can make lemonade out of lemons Derek can. Fingers crossed it will go well.
and for the dance face-offs (I will always remember zendaya and val choosing karina and jacoby because it was just so nice to see two big guns against each other and how they all underestimated kellie pickler lol) I want to see Elizabeth and Val vs Corbin and Karina. Just to see who would win.
somebody put a article fron ABC on twitter that say cher is judging plus a shocking elimination
i’m nervous
Vin, I agree. I’ve followed Corbin for a while and watched him interact on interviews with the cast and various people. Everybody who interacts with him has wonderful things to say about him. I don’t think he is arrogant at all.
Very excited for tonight. I just saw a preview of Brant/Peta, Corbin/Karina, and Jack/Cheryl dances for tonight. Looks good.
How can they say there’s a shocking elimination when they don’t even know whose won the immunity challenge or scored the dances? Hahaha…oh this show…your ridiculousness makes me love you even when I hate you. No shame.
exactly Alabama that’s what i was thinking too
Apparently, this was an email sent out by ABC to those who subscribe. I agree, how can they be teasing a shocking elimination when the couples haven’t danced yet tonight? uggh
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BYPJYbJCIAAb796.jpg
I think maybe it was a very inartful way of saying that there will be a double elimination, i.e. the second elimination will be the “shocking” (unexpected) one.
Well, they didn’t actually say “a shocking elimination” They said “an elimination shocker”. This is one of those instances when you have to read it very carefully. A “shocking elimination” seems pretty definitively about who is going home. Put the other way, “an elimination shocker” could be HOW they do the elimination – like, say, a DOUBLE elimination, or eliminating someone before the show and someone after. Something like that.
right my bad sorry everybody 😉
lol Maybe they mean double elimination like Susan said.
It makes no sense how they would know now w/o the challenge dance-off. lmao
I got the same email but I think the person that came up with the subject line of the email messed up.
In the newsletter The main “article” is Cher being on this week.
Underneath that “article” is a picture of Sasha & Nicole and this headline & text:
Weekly Breakdown
An elimination no one saw coming, two INCREDIBLE team dances and more! Check out the highs and lows from last week.
Heidi, I bet you are right. That makes more sense.
Thanks Leslie for the screen shot. It’s been added to the post for those interested in seeing it in full.
My guess is it’s either a double elim or them just trying to draw in additional viewers. I don’t think they can know it’s going to be a shocking elim yet without scores being factored in.
I think it already got mentioned – but I’m not sure. Isn’t the ‘elimination shocker’ just referring to the part below the pic of Cher with Nicole’s elimination last week?
It would be highly unlikely, but maybe they really could mean “shocking elimination” – someone got so few votes last week that no matter how well they did tonight, it still wouldn’t be enough to stick around. It would be a pretty dick move for them to throw that out there, but nothing surprises me anymore…
Yeah it’s all about the wording. It makes me think a double elimination but would they do without Len there and scores based on someone who has no ballroom knowledge? I don’t know…
Holy Batman!! I go away for a bit and this new information pops up. One part of me is kind of happy and the other part is “WTH”…
I feel like the “elimination shocker” has to do with Nicole/Sasha, but I am not 100% sure….
@Alabama – you raise a very good point. I was just reading an article where Cher herself has admitted that she knows nothing about Ballroom dancing. Enough said.
It looks like it specifically says “Tonight”.
Hey it’s @jahfan1, Heidi made a good point on twitter maybe it’s a double elimination…
The way I read it is that the shocker was part of the recap of last week. They probably put it in the subject line to increase the likelihood of people actually opening and reading the email.
Yeah, I think the bottom left is a recap of the previous week.
The problem with that, Court, is that they would have to already know who is going to get “immunity” this week. And they would never do that, right? 😀
The bottom left of the email is def about Nicole/Sasha. The subject line could refer to that, or it could be a whole new ball o’ wax. The TV commmercials kind of imply something shocking will happen, but I don’t think it’s as direct as this email seems to be.
Seriously! If they feel the need to draw publicity from last week’s elimination. In my opinion, that’s pathetic.
I guess it’s anything goes, as far as keeping viewers tuned into their show and not “The Voice”.
Hoping it’s not another shock, would love to see leah go she just isn’t fun to watch
Karina and corbin are dancing first, she replied to my tweet earlier yay 🙂
I wonder if they would ever announce the bottom three (just based on votes) at the top of the show? I think it would be a terribly mean thing to do to the cast and pros but I wouldn’t put it past them.
Can we hope if they are referring to “elimination shocker” for this week that it means that Bill is staying and maybe Liz and Val are going home…..
One can dream. I do not think Leah would be a “shocker”. But they probably are referring to last week.
Corbin and Karina going first? Hmmm…I don’t know how well that bodes for them. Getting a 30 going first isn’t that common on this show and I think they need a 30 to beat Elizabeth and Val for immunity as I’m assuming they’ll get a perfect score. I fully expected them to put Bill first…maybe they’ll have him go last because it will be a fun, energetic number.
Where are you seeing that, Alabama?
Yeah I was thinking bill may go last since disco is fun. They may have put Corbin and Karina first since they’ve danced last or close to it the past two weeks. Looking forward to tonight even though I am not a big fan of when all the songs are from 1 artist
Heidi – Ashley F’s post (#67), Karina responded to her on twitter.
My guess is the elimination shocker happened last week. Remember this is the show that couldn’t even post the correct phone numbers, so it won’t surprise me in the least if they can’t correctly write an email subject line.
I do wonder when they will pull out the double elimination. To do it this week would seem extra confusing/controversial, imho, with immunity, the dance off and a guest judge with few credentials.
Thanks, Alabama and Ashley. 🙂
No problem at all Heidi 🙂
Nothing they do surprises me anymore. If that comment wasn’t in reference to Nicole, and there is a shock tonight, I have to hope that it’s Elizabeth. I want Leah gone more than her, but Leah wouldn’t be a shock.
Playing on the idea it’s a “shocking elimination”: in their minds, Leah may be a “shocking elimination” to them being they think she’s so good. lol
A shocking elimination can be left up to anyone’s interpretation. Just have to wait and see what goes on, who is eliminated.
Would Leah be a Shocking Elimination or Shocking Celebration?
Sorry. You HAVE no idea how long I have been holding that one in. 🙂
Well at this point a shocking elimination would be Elizabeth, Amber or Corbin. Bill or Leah being eliminated would not be shocking. If it’s Amber, I’m DONE watching this show. Elimination shocker could mean a surprise double elimination. I’m so over Leah and Elizabeth too for that matter so they can leave ANY time now!
I don’t find Corbin cocky, on the contrary, he is very amicable and everyone on the cast likes him. I am worried about him if there is a shocker elimination….Disney was playing “Vote for Corbin” commercials all weekend, and my kids said they hadn’t seen them prior to that….sooooo??? PLease don’t let this be another Sabrina moment…sigh.
Yeah, I don’t find Corbin cocky. I might have at first…but even then, not really cocky, just protesting too much. He seems to have relaxed a bit.
I dont think Corbin is cocky. I just think he thinks that he isn’t a good dancer when he clearly is 😛 Kinda surprised he is going first. I dont doubt his AT will be great but making a good dance go first just sounds weird. They should have opened with Leah (who I will now call Lee-Ugh) . JLo is in the audience tonight. Surprise surprise…..
On a side note, I love all the support the cast is getting from Nicole. She really seems to have grown close to everyone and found a family in them. Unlike other people who have been eliminated (looking at you Christina).
No way do I think there would be a shocking elimination with Len being absent from the judges table. So In my opinion, I am scratching that notion completely.
I am excited to see if Bill and Emma are dressed the part for Disco night. Not this could be hilarious.
@sheery – Sadly my excitement for the partnership of Corbin and Karina left by week 2.
seriously Jlo again
ugh
can’t stand leah anymore
So, that means you think it will be Bill or Leah, Sandy?
Yikes looks like Liz got hurt in practice.
that AT was kinda boring
What does karina have to do to get a 10! That was amazing choroegraphy. The judges are nuts. Amber is going to get 8’s and Liz 10’s. Hate this show.
@Heidi – It pains me to say it, but I would not be surprised if it’s Bill this week.
No I Meant “Shocking Double Elimination”…. Oops! But I still won’t be surprise if it’s Bill and Sweet Little Emma. Hopefully it’s Leah though. Fingerscrossed.
#89 – You’re absolutely right that AT was boring. There was lack of rehearsal, but the music didn’t seem to fit. Felt sorry for Brant and Peta. Question on everyone’s mind, when the heck is Leah and Tony going home? Bill has had his time already, sorry, nice guy really.
Derek and Amber and Jack and Cheryl were the best of the night!
